CHARLIE'S COLUMN When you come to visit us this season , our cover will give you an idea of the LUSH new bungalows. Upstairs and Downstairs. They are really lush . Our new Stadium Courts are a huge success. The new Terrace Room has relieved the congestion in the Garden Room. Actually , the best place to sit for lunch is on the new terrace overlooking the Stadium Courts, where ~ou can watch the action. Soon we'll have one H- of a time finding room for everyone. I'm off now for a week's fishing in Acapulco. Hope to see you soon. Love and Kisses Mrs. Vice-President (Judy) swinging with Harry Dundore at the opening party. Our Union man David McDonald celebrating his 20th year of union with wife Rosemary. GLORl~S CORNER The new decade is upon us and with it the knowledge that no matter WHAT decade is here, things continue to be lively at the Racquet Club, where visitors range from the Vice President of the United States, Spiro T. Agnew, to Royalty. Her Royal Highness, Princess Lala Nazha, sister of the King of Morocco , was entertained with her husband , Ahmed Osman , Moroccan Ambassador to the United States, recently in the Garden Room by artist John Morris. Other guests were Council General Abdeslam Jaidi , Princess Kenza , Lady In Waiting to the Royal Princess, Miss Judy Israel , Rose and Charles Wohlstetter, and Town and Country Magazine's popular man who IS with it, George Christy. Latter is writing a book on rare French wines and enjoyed discussing wines with two experts, Charles and Rose, who have their owrt European chalet and wine vineyards. Vice President Agnew and his wife, Judy, dropped into the club's opening party for this season and were immediately surrounded by well wishers. The next morning, the vice president showed everyone what good shape he was in when he took on Barbara Marx for a set of tennis. New Year's Eve arrived to the tune of Auld Lang Syne and the sight of hundreds of floating balloons. The Charles Wohlstetters, who flew here from New York City just for the holidays, entertained pretty Kathy Hays, Bernard Goodman, Ken Herman with (Liz Taylor?) Kit Davis enjoying one of our beautiful buffets. with our "When you and me was young, Moivyn ". Champion Olympics swimmer in middle whose name (We don't know - too long ago). Judy Agnew and Rosalie Hearst renew acquaintances at the Racquet Club opening party. who flew here to attend the party from the Virgin Islands, John Holland (whose commercial about General Farbacher is such a smash in Texas that residents of the Lone Star State and south surround him for autographs here) and Marjorie and Paul Friedlander. Dick Millen and his wife, Mary Alice, were missed by everyone. Dick was in a severe automobile accident just days before the start of the New Year. Fortunately, he is much better now and he and his wife are back in the Racquet Club swing. Others in the late night throng were Anne Marie and Bob Prescott (he's president of Flying Tigers), the Nat Dumonts and Jerry and Mary Dunphy, Marlo Lewis and his wife, Minna Bess, Monica and Jennings Lang, the David Tulcins, Leith Stevens and his wife, Liz, Paul Lukas, and the Fleetwood Garners with their sons Tom and Bill and Bill's date, Wendy Feltman. The Raymond Loewys were with their daughter, Laurence , and the young set was also represented by Paul McNamara's son , Paul, and Mrs. McNamara senior, who is Eloise Hardt. Everyone is happy to see that Edna Rothbart has recovered from the bad fall she had that sent her scurrying to the hospital. She fell less than an hour after trying out the good luck cabbage offered her by Al Hunt, who assured her that nibbling cabbage at midnight would guarantee good luck for the year! Paul Year Ralph Story, here for the holidays, confided he's writing a ' ,ok based on his air experiences. It wasn't an opening and it wasn't New Year's Eve , but all eyes were on the four gorgeous Gal5ors - Jolie and her daughters Eva; Zsa Zsa and Magda, when they dined together in the Garden Room with Nat and Valorie Dumont. It was the first time all four had been together in five years. Rosemary and David McDonald were surprised on their 20th wedding anniversary when they anticipated a quiet dinner with their friends, Bobbie and Allen Patmore, and found a surprise party in progress in the Terrace Room in their honor. The special anniversary cake said, " Congratulations On Your Union - Man and Wife, 20 years." And what could be more appropriate for the author of "Union Man?" Members are enjoying the new Stadium Tennis Court and even Lilly Farrell had a long admiring look at her father Farrell on the tennis courts. Bob Dellinger watched a scene from his new TV series, "Something Else", as the pretty femmes hit some tennis balls over the net. And all eyes were on Bette Davis when she had dinner in the Terrace Room with Virginia Zanuck and a party of friends, including Betsy and Ever Hammes. Palm Springs has always been a place for honeymooners and so it's no wonder that holiday honeymooners Arlene Dahl and her husband, Rounsville S. Schaum, found their way here. Or that Carol Stolkin actually made the flight from Chicago to Palm Springs in a tennis dress because she had a tennis date here IMMEDIATELY following her arrival at Palm Springs Airport. Another member who couldn't wait to get on the courts was Donald Woods, who headed straight for the tennis courts after he closed in "You Can't Take It With You" at the Goodman theater in Chicago. One thing he can take with him to Palm Springs - and did - is realization that this show broke every existing record at the Goodman theater. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Strauss spent Christmas here and another visitor was Richardson Dillworth former Mayor of Philadelphia, wh~ Union man , David McDonald greeting the Vice-President and his party at the club. I ~>1 Happiness Isl Ring out the Old and Ring in the New with friends, Marge Friedlander, Minna Bess Lewis, Marlo Lewis, Charles Wohlstetter and Bernard Goodman. Among the spectacular furs seen this year are eye openers Geri Firks' maxisable and Edie Hollingsworth 's maxi white mink. Frederick Loewe received congratulations for his generous offer to share royalties with Desert Hospital and the Eisenhower Medical Center. Daily faces seen in the dining crowd include Ike and Rita Levy, Mr. and Mrs. Maury Gross, the Jack Meiselmans. And Truman Capote was among guests at Mrs. Robert Wagner's luncheon for close friends, including Barbara. Hearst columnist Dorothy Manners spent a few days here and Millie Considine stopped in during her two day ·hiatus from Arizona, where hubby Bob remained with other top journalists. She was guest of honor at a big luncheon given her by Dorothy Gray Brown. Hoagy Carmichael and the George Hearsts helped Kay and Dolph Obergfel celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary with Emma and Rex Bartlett, who wed a few days earlier. No wonder Tony Rose is getting to be such an expert with the Anniversary Waltz! Mr. and Mrs. Mike Goldsmith dining in the Garden Room during their stay at the Racquet Club. Jackie and Ralph Story presented me with a "directors" chair with "Big Julie" on the back! Mervyn LeRoy said he'd like to borrow it for his next picture. We named one for my boss, Charles Farrell, and the other for our late, loved tennis professional of 22 years, Dave Gillam. Bill Davis has an assistant this year. Joyce Linnick has moved back to the desert, much to the delight of her many friends, and is very active on the teaching court. Our first tournament of the season was Charlie's 14th Invitational, where he invites 16 of the top west coast players to be his guests. They play singles, wherein the results go towards their rankings and then play informal mens and mixed doubles with our members. This year, Jeff Borowick (No. 1 UCLA) defeated Tom Leonard (No. I SC) in the finals, 6-1, 6-4. Al Martini and Steve Fiske downed Jim Bisch and Bud Guion, 3-6, 8-6, 8-6, while Marjorie Jackson and Bud Guion outlasted Barbara Marx and Steve Fiske 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in the mixed. Al Martini then teamed with Sam Match to defeat Bob Galloway and Dave Martin 6-2 , 6-1 for the doubes title . The busy , busy Thanksgiving weekend came along and then to close the month of November, we had the first Dentist's tournament, with approximately 50 dentists from as far as New Mexico participating. It was most successful and promises to be more so next year. The 20th Blue Ribbon had our largest and strongest field in years. We almost completed it, but the unusual rains cancelled our finals with only one event completed. Jane Albert Freeman and Ron Willens upset defending champions Joan Primm and Tom Leonard , 6-4, 6-3. The following Sunday, we finished the tournament with the following results: Mens Championship - Horst Ritter and Dick Leach defeated John Levin and nationally ranked Roy Barth, 6-3, 6-8 , 6-4. Men's "A" Flight - Wendell Niles Jr. and Ron Preissman defeated Alan Harris and Larry Smith, 6-3 , 9-7 ; Men's " B" Flight - Harvey Snyder and Glenn Cripe defeated Dr. Henry Spitzer and Sidney Adelstein, 6-1, 6-3; Mixed "A" Flight Carolyn Kleefeld and John Levin defeated Sandy Shore and Jim Flanagan, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2; Mixed "B" Flight - Joanne and Jim Leonard won by default from Dale and Bruce Barker. We shall miss Bob Wasserman, who passed ·away recently. He had so many tennis friends and always welcomed them to his court in Los Angeles. Alan Harris and Larry Smith practiced there daily for this tournament. Dick Millen (President of the Racquet Club) has taken up tennis and was taking lessons from Bill and Joyce, when he had a bad automobile accident which has temporarily halted his climb to the Club Championship. Surprise of the season! Greg Bautzer is resuming tennis after 4 years and I have started playing again, after a 3 year layoff! Any challenges? That seems to get us up to date for now - play well, and again, stop foot-faulting! Opening Night at the Racquet Qub always finds happy people Mousie Powell, Mary Alice and Dick Millen enjoying cocktail party in the Fa"ell House. ANN'S ANAGRAMS Going, Going and still Going. Our season started out in full swing and is still going in full swing into another year. You can tell by the happy and smiling faces around the club that everyone looks forward with anticpation to each new season when they can get together again with friends at their home away from home. Everyone is enjoying the new terrace where you can relax over a drink or bite to eat while watching the action on the new Stadium Courts. Since the Terrace Room has been redone with sliding glass doors and new carpeting, it has become quite a popular spot for cocktail parties and dining. If you haven't seen it, be sure you do. MONDAY - FEBRUARY 23, will be the annual HELEN ROSE FASHION SHOW AND LUNCHEON. This will, as always, be magnificent and one you should attend.
