Chlorophyll, 2013
Sculpted canvas and acrylic framed in Douglas fir • 38”x 48”x 3”
Jason Hallman and Stephen Stum, the Seattle-based artist duo behind
Stallman Studio, are pioneering a visionary technique of using acrylic
and canvas as sculpture. Drawing inspiration from patterns in cellular
biology and gradients in the natural world,
their body of work transforms the traditional medium of painting from
a flat plane into a three-dimensional form that captures ever-changing
movements of light and shadow. Their artworks are conceived from
large sheets of raw canvas, hand-painted and cut into strips that are then
uniquely molded into place. Hallman and Stum merge talent and vision
to create multifaceted sculpture, turning the ordinary into extraordinary.

gowns his mother made for weddings and Quinceañeras. According to the
artist, “the dress was a springboard that allowed me to focus my fascination of
decoration. The dress has a personality of its own.” After receiving his MFA in
ceramics from the University of Washington in 2009, Rodriguez was a recipient
of a prestigious Bonderman Travel Fellowship that allowed him to travel the

18 MARGIE LIVINGSTON
Folded Painting #3, 2012
Acrylic on Alupanel on backing frame • 6”x 12”x 12”
Folded Painting #3 was one of the featured works
in BAM Biennial 2012: High Fiber Diet, created by
Seattle-based artist Margie Livingston. The Folded Painting series evolved from studio experiments in which
she transformed multicolored sheets of paint to simulate the properties of fabric — looking like blankets, quilts,
and tablecloths — and connecting the work of hearth and home to the domain of crafts. These beautiful and
intriguing art objects blur the lines between painting and sculpture, abstraction and figuration, and often
between concrete and conceptual art. The artist has exhibited internationally and is the recipient of numerous
awards including the Arts Innovator Award, Artist Trust; Neddy Artist Fellowship; Betty Bowen Annual
Memorial Award; and a Fulbright Scholarship. ELIGIBLE FOR GOLDEN TICKET SELECTION

Mark Tobey was a pioneer of American Abstraction and one
of the most important artists to have been part of the group
from the Pacific Northwest known as the “Northwest School.”
He and his work are still deeply revered in the Northwest with
his art represented in the permanent collections of most of
the major art museums throughout the world. Tobey is an
artist whose communication is effected in the most purely
visual language, resisting translation into any other. Tobey
described his distinctive calligraphic style as a kind of “moving
line.” It is characterized by the frequent use of leaf-like forms
and structures, crystalline networks of fine lines, and above all by undulating, interconnecting, and
overlapping movement. His works have the precision, concentration, and intimacy of manuscript
illuminations. ELIGIBLE FOR GOLDEN TICKET SELECTION

connections to the ancient codes and symbols of the land. In 2010,
