The dress has a personality of its own.” After receiving his MFA in ceramics from the University of Washington in 2009, Rodriguez was a recipient of a prestigious Bonderman Travel Fellowship that allowed him to travel the world. These beautiful and intriguing art objects blur the lines between painting and sculpture, abstraction and figuration, and often between concrete and conceptual art. The artist has exhibited internationally and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Arts Innovator Award, Artist Trust; Neddy Artist Fellowship; Betty Bowen Annual Memorial Award; and a Fulbright Scholarship. Tobey is an artist whose communication is effected in the most purely visual language, resisting translation into any other. Tobey described his distinctive calligraphic style as a kind of “moving line.” It is characterized by the frequent use of leaf-like forms and structures, crystalline networks of fine lines, and above all by undulating, interconnecting, and overlapping movement.
