ISO 50001 - A KEY STRATEGY FOR FIGHTING CLIMATE
CHANGE
ISO Technical Committee 301 has created a globally-relevant standard that
countries can leverage to meet their international climate commitments
ISO 50001 is:
– Ambitious and Quantifiable:
 Relevant to sectors that account for over 50% of global energy use
 Data-driven action to improve energy performance on a continual basis
– Transparent, comparable and verifiable:
 Globally-harmonized; transparent certification process; internationally-relevant

ENERGY MANAGEMENT WORKING GROUP (EMWG)
The EMWG leverages the extensive expertise of its 16 member
governments to accelerate the adoption and use of energy
management systems such as ISO 50001 in industry and in
commercial buildings worldwide.
Fora: The EMWG is an initiative of the Clean Energy
Ministerial and IPEEC and also reports out to the G20.
Partners: A range of organizations promoting energy
efficiency and energy management including TC 301,
UNIDO and partners of the EMWG’s Energy Management
Campaign

Implementation
ISO TC 301 │ slide 4
• Plays an important role in helping governments
achieve energy and climate goals
• Development of robust policies, programs, and
resources for national and international use
• Sharing of best practices to ensure robust and
consistent implementation of the standard
• Government, international organizations,
utilities, energy service companies and others
work on the ground to help organizations
implement the standard
KEY PRINCIPLES FOR INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENT ON
ISO 50001
1. Need common approaches for measuring climate impacts from ISO 50001.
2. Qualified ISO 50001 professionals maximize global impacts
3. Robust ISO 50001 certification strategies support consistent global
outcomes
4. International input strengthens the market relevance of ISO 50001
portfolio

ISO 50001 GLOBAL IMPACTS RESEARCH NETWORK
& THE IET 50001 TOOL
• LBNL led development of initial methodology and ISO
50001 Impact Estimator Tool (IET 50001) software
tool that can be used at the national or regional level
to predict, quantify, and demonstrate the value of ISO
50001.
• 25 experts from 13 countries and UNIDO contribute
to work through the Impact Network
• Impact Network results and IET 50001 tool and
guidance document available for download at

2016 Research Results • ISO 50001 across the commercial
and industrial sectors globally
could drive cumulative energy
savings of approximately 62
exajoules by 2030, saving over
$600 billion in energy costs and
avoiding 6,500 Mt of CO2
emissions. The projected annual
emissions savings in 2030 are
equivalent to removing 215
million passenger vehicles from
the road.
Many opportunities for organizations to be
recognized!
• CEM Award of Excellence in Energy Management
• CEM Energy Management Insight Award
• National Energy Management Awards (e.g.
Canada, South Africa, UAE, etc)
The 2016 Awards program produced 35 new ISO
50001 Case Studies from 20 countries and a variety
of sectors!

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION NEEDED TO ENSURE SUCCESS
OF ISO 50003!
Governments need to work with each other and directly with their national
accreditation and certification bodies to ensure quality conformity assessment
requirements of ISO 50003 are implemented robustly and consistently.
EMWG partners came together to create the Energy Professionals International (EPI)
ISO 50001 Lead Auditor Certification Program.
– 20 Lead Auditors Certified as of May 2016
– Looking for partners!
