General information on the region
South Africa – The Host Nation
A sense of pride in what we have achieved in our country in its short democratic history after its tumultuous
past is evident in all South African do on the international stage. Since April 1995 when all people in the
country could cast their vote for the first time, South Africa has made immense leaps and strides both
internally and internationally.
The country on the tip of Africa is the political and economic powerhouse of the Continent and has played host
to a number of large international sporting events amongst the largest being the IRB Rugby and ICC Cricket
World Cups and the country also recently played host to the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, the largest sports

event on the planet, from 11 June – 11 July 2010
Although we are justifiably proud of the eventing capacity and capabilities evident in the country, we are also
proud of what our country has to offer all visitors that grace our shores. Friendly people, sea, mountains,
wildlife, cultural experiences, wide open spaces and masses of sky all make a visit to the country a memorable
one.

The Host City
Pietermaritzburg is the capital city of Kwazulu – Natal, one of nine provinces in the country, and is situated on
the east coast of the country, 85km from the coastal city of Durban, the largest and busiest harbour in the
Southern Hemisphere. Today’s Pietermaritzburg is a vibrant, busy city ready to embrace the future, but still
retains links to the historical past that has seen some of the most important aspects of South African history
unfold on its doorstep.
Kwazulu – Natal has a long and proud cultural heritage and is the birthplace and home of the Zulu Nation and is
blessed with outstanding natural beauty and cultural diversity. The region has two World Heritage sites within
easy driving distance of Pietermaritzburg and for more information on the region of Kwazulu – Natal, go to the

The city is blessed with great weather, especially in the summer months, when it is hot but without the
humidity of the coast. The 2015 UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup will be staged at a time when there is very
little rain in the region - KZN and the majority of the country enjoys summer rainfall. The temperature can be
cool in the evenings and nights, but are traditionally around the 20 – 25 Degree Celsius range during the day.
The terrain for all forms of cycling is excellent but especially for mountain biking with a vast number of trails
that can be ridden all year round and as it is the foothills of the Drakensburg Mountains, one of the province’s
World Heritage sites, the terrain is excellent for the sport.

Climatic conditions at the time of the event
KwaZulu-Natal, on the eastern side of South Africa, has a warm, sub-tropical climate, with temperatures
moderated by the expanse of the Indian Ocean. Summers are hot and humid averaging 28 degrees, and
experience the majority of the annual rainfall, while winters, with average temperatures of 23 degrees, are
warm, dry and clear. There is occasional frost in the interior and snow often falls in the higher reaches in
winter. Winter sunshine averages almost 7 hours a day, some of the highest in the country.
The climate of KwaZulu-Natal is described as year-round tourist-friendly. Sea temperatures are also relatively
stable, averaging 21ºC all year, providing for a diversity of aquatic activities in any season.

Travelling to Pietermaritzburg
There are a number of ways to get to Pietermaritzburg and South Africa has three international airports – OR
Tambo in Johannesburg (450km from Pmb), Cape Town (1400km from Pmb) and King Shaka International in
Durban (90km away) as well as Oribi Airport in the city. This is a regional airport and can be reached on a
connection from Johannesburg with a number of daily flights between the two centres.
Most international airlines fly into South Africa and nearly all of them arrive into OR Tambo in Johannesburg or
Cape Town. King Shaka International airport has limited international flights arriving there but all domestic
airlines fly into King Shaka in Durban.
The best suggested option for teams is to fly into Johannesburg and then either fly directly to Pietermaritzburg,
or if schedules do not allow, to Durban and travel by car to the city. Another option is to collect vehicles in
Johannesburg and drive to Pietermaritzburg which is situated 450km from Johannesburg and is an easy 4 - 5
hour drive on excellent highways.

The organisers are proud to announce that Europcar will be involved in the event as the official vehicle
partner. Details of the benefits that will apply to teams and riders will appear on the official website when
finalized but in the interim, all queries can be sent to Deirdre Deetlefs and her email address is

Please note that although Pietermaritzburg is quite a compact city, it is advisable for teams and riders to
arrange for the use of a vehicle whilst at the event in order to get around. The competition venue is also
outside the city so transport will be required.

Race description
The event in Pietermaritzburg will have two competition venues with the Time Trial competition being staged
in the Midmar Dam complex on Friday 11th September and the road races will be staged in the city of
Pietermaritzburg using Alexander Park as the official competition venue.
Midmar Dam is a popular recreational destination situated off the N3, 24 km from the centre of
Pietermaritzburg and 7 km from Howick. The reserve is 2 857 ha in extent and boating, swimming, waterskiing,
picnicking, and fishing are popular pastimes at the dam. It is also the venue where the Midmar Mile, the largest
open water swim with 17 000 entrants, is staged as well as a number of large national and international
triathlon events.

The team relay route will also be in Pietermaritzburg and will be staged using the roads within
Alexander Park itself and the route is outlined below.
Neutral service
Neutral service facilities will be in place for the event.
Official trainings
At the moment, no road closers are guaranteed. Nevertheless, athletes will be able to ride in any city and
Midmar Dam is perhaps a good venue as the roads in the complex are quiet.

In reference to the UCI regulations (art. 16.20.006) registration shall take place on the UCI online registration
website http://regonline.uci.ch/_layouts/login_Onlineservices.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f
The UCI online registration begins on 6th August 2015 and closes on 20th August 2015.
The registration fee will be € 75.00 per registration request. Refunds cannot be done for athletes who did not
complete the online registration and until payments have been affected, registration cannot be considered as
being completed. Only National Federtion that have paid their registration fee within the deadline will receive
an accreditation and be able to take part in the competition.

Insurance
Each team is responsible for insuring its athletes. It is complusary that this covers: damage to property,
personal injuries and /or health problems, third-party liabilities
Medical
Medical care for entrants is the responsibility of the organiser during the event at the event site and within
the confines of the race routes. However, any other costs incurred should there be illness or injury including
patient transportation by either road or air as well as admission costs to emergency units / hospitals are the
responsibility of the federation or the athlete.
In the event that costs for medical care cannot be funded by the patient’s medical aid, these funds will be
paid by the patient in his/her private capacity.
A copy of the valid International Medical Insurance Certificate / medical insurance card is required to validate
the completion of the entry process for both international and South African competitors.
Race Permanence
The race permanence for the time trial competition will be in the conference centre at Midmar dam which is
situated next to the restaurant. It will be operational from 7am – 6pm on Friday 11th September 2015.
The race permanence for the road race competition on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September 2015 will be
in the Maritzburg Bowling Club situated in Alexander Park. It will be operational from
7am – 6pm each day.
Accreditation / Registration Centre
The accreditation centre will be at the Protea Hotel Hilton, 1 Hilton Avenue, Hilton, 3201. The accreditation
centre will be operational from 9am – 5pm each day, starting on 8th September. All team accreditations will
need to be collected from the Accreditation Centre.

Visas
Each federation is responsible for obtaining the necessary documentation to gain entry into South Africa.
Every person seeking to enter South Africa must be in possession of a valid passport for travel to South Africa
and, where necessary, a visa. Enquiries can be directed to South African diplomatic representatives abroad or
the Department of Home Affairs in Pretoria. Visitors who intend traveling to South Africa's neighboring
countries and back into South Africa are advised to apply for multiple entry visas. Visas are not issued on arrival
at South African ports of entry.
VISA Requirements:
Passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of the intended visit;
Passports must contain at least one unused page for entry or departure endorsements;
Payment of the prescribed fee, if applicable;
A vaccination certificate, if required by the Act;
Statement and/or documentation confirming purpose and duration of visit;
Two identity photographs (see website for details);
Proof of financial means; and
A return / onward ticket.
In terms of existing arrangements, passport holders of certain countries are exempt from visa requirements.
Tourists must satisfy immigration officers that they have the means to support themselves during their stay,
and that they are in possession of return or onward air tickets. They must also have valid international health
certificates.
