RUNNERS, GET READY
The 30th annual Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend kicked off on Friday as participants eagerly awaited the opening of the Health & Fitness Expo at the Saint Paul RiverCentre, with a mass of people arriving well before the noon opening. By 12:30, the expo was in full swing and attendees had the opportunity to come to the Athlete Press Conference to hear some tips from the pros from the 10 Mile and Marathon and hear some interesting stories from the Faces in the Crowd and Charter Club groups.
Over the next two days, over 40,000 people would come to the expo to pick up their race packets, shop for running gear, and attend free informational and inspirational seminars given by some of the biggest names in the running industry including Expo Seminars by Mayo Clinic, Team USA Minnesota, and marathon training guru, Hal Higdon. Runners left the expo with race essentials, some good advice and maybe some new gear. Ready to hit the ground running.

TC 10K TC 5K RUN/WALK PRESENTED BY FREDRIKSON & BYRON
2011 TC 5K
On a crisp October morning, 2004 Olympian and local runner Carrie Tollefson secured her second win in the TC 5K in 16 minutes, 29 seconds, nearly a full two minutes in front of Liz Black, who ran 18:27. Abbigale Forsman rounded out the top three with 19:26. “Today was about just having fun, seeing if I can get myself back to competing in 2012,” said Tollefson. “I was trying to run around 16:30 and I think I broke that.” Tollefson won the 5K in 2005 with a time of 16:16. “I have a little girl on the sidelines now,” she said, referencing her daughter, Ruby. “It’s a good day.”
In the men’s race, a group of students from the University of Minnesota ran as the lead pack until Adam Zutz broke away with 1000 meters left, breaking the tape in 15:01. Teammates Matt Jergesen and last year’s winner Blayne Dulian trailed in 15:04 and 15:11, respectively.

State Capitol.
The Medtronic TC 10 Mile continues to be a popular race among both elites and the Twin Cities running community, Due to its popularity, Twin Cities In Motion uses a lottery system to select interested runners randomly. A tracking feature was introduced in 2010, giving runners who hadn’t been selected for two consecutive years guaranteed entry to the race on the third year. The lucky 8,000 participants lined the starting line in the chilly October morning right around dawn at 7:09 am ready to take “The Shortcut to the Capitol®.” A common race to run with friends or as a group, this race is always a lot of fun and a great Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Race Weekend event.

2011 MEDTRONIC TWIN CITIES MARATHON ELITE RACE RECAP
What started out as recordsetting pace in the women’s race slowed shortly before the halfway point. The women were on pace to break the course record of 2:26:51 set by Zinaida Semenova (RUS) in 2001 and then tied by Irina Permitina (RUS) in 2004. But the back half of the course surprised women’s champion Yeshimebet 4(:,##,VW);(3%<+&%!*)#+,:%)*%E?EF?EDA%XY%+(:%)*)$)(11C%L1(**,:%$&%".*%.*:,"%E%+&."#3%EJ%/)*.$,#3Z%4(:,##,VW);(%#():%$+"&.2+%(*%)*$,"L",$,"3%X'.$%Y%(/%2"($,;.1%$&%+(=,%".*%
in as much time as God allowed me to run. I was bothered by the headwinds throughout the race and the hills. Without the hills I would’ve broken the record. My training had prepared me to run faster than I did today.”
While TadesseBifa ran unchallenged the last ten miles of the race, Russian Nadezdha Leonteva and American Emily Harrison found themselves in a battle down the home stretch, with Leonteva outkicking Harrison to secure second place with 2:32:53, just two seconds better than Harrison’s 2:32:55. In the men’s race, a pack of fourteen men ran together for much of the race before beginning to break apart at mile eighteen. By mile 22, the pack had dwindled to four, <)$+%,=,*$.(1%<)**,"%M(//C%T(1(9<,*%'",(9)*2%$+,%$(L,%)*%E?6@?66A%B&#,L+%T.$)*:(%!*)#+,:%6@%#,-&*:#%'(-9%)*%E?6@?ED%<+)1,%R,1:&*%8)".)%!*)#+,:%$+)":%)*%E?6@?@6A%
“When I started I was feeling comfortable,” said Malakwen of the pace. “Then I was trying to get the pace up and was trying to drop some guys from the pack. That’s very important.” 2011

a unique story: Last year when Elizabeth ran the marathon, she was cut by her bra rubbing up against her side. A few days after the marathon, she went in to have it looked at and they diagnosed her immediately with Melanoma. She was admitted to treatment shortly thereafter and has successfully battled her way through cancer this past year, and has become a survivor! She credits the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon for saving her life as if it weren’t for her run in last year’s marathon, she never would have known. She ran the marathon again this year, because she felt she owed it to the TCM community. run

select only three winners. The top three Cheer Zones receive cash prizes for the charity of their choice. Judging was based on the creativity of the Cheer Zone and the level of enthusiasm the Zone exhibited when cheering for runners.
From rock and roll to traditional Japanese drumming, there was something for everyone along the curbs of the race course. Huge thanks to all the groups that came out to entertain the runners!
First place: Cheer Zone 11 The Children’s Tumor Foundation
Judges notes: The Children’s Tumor Foundation had everyone dressed in neon yellow which made them very visible to the runners. There were a lot of people stretching nearly a block cheering for the runners, which is a big help at that point. On top of all the people cheering at their zone, they had a drum line and a band. Runners couldn’t help but get recharged running through this Zone!
This year we had 15 entertainment acts working hard to keep runners entertained! Acts included: DrumHeart, Fat Fendered Blvd., IPR, Misora Taiko, Robbinsdale City Band, Seward Concert Band, Squeaky Wheel Band, St. Paul Postal Band, Steve West Band, Templeton, The Outliers, The Young Professionals, Twin Cities Scottish Club, University of St. Thomas Dance Team, and the Zingrays. Congratulations to DrumHeart, who was named Best Course Entertainment!
Second place: Cheer Zone 7 Ticket King
Judges notes: Point blank, they had it all and then some. If I could be at any Cheer Zone, I would have wanted to be at that one. The food, beverages, music, pony rides, mini donuts, tilt a whirl, kids jumpy…it was over the top. It was certainly a spectacle for the runners to go by. Third place: Cheer Zone 7 Joel Quinnell Judges notes: Joel did a great job this year with his sign hung up, the Bob Marley hair, the uplifting music and the *./',"%&;%L,&L1,%+,%+(:%1)*,:%.L%&*%$+,%#$",,$%2)=)*2%(%+)2+%!=,%$&%".**,"%(;$,"%".**,"A%%Y$%<(#%1&.:3%)$%<(#%-"(jC%(*:%)$I#%

VALENTINE’S DAY TC 5K
100% IRISH FOR A DAY TC 5K AND TC 10 MILE
Love was in the air at the 26th annual Valentine’s Day TC 5K. Over 1,600 runners participated, making this the largest Valentine’s Day TC 5K in our history. Many dressed for the occasion, sporting Valentinethemed attire. Our winged Cupid posed for photos and did his best to make love matches between those participants wearing a “Single” back tag, though many of you proudly displayed your “Taken” status. A special shoutout to those of you brave enough to go with “It’s Complicated”! It wasn’t complicated for two Twin Cities’ runners. Grant Morrison and Michelle Hoff, along with their wedding party, got their wedding day off to a running start, running the 5K just hours before their real walk down the aisle. Dressed in appropriate bride and groom attire, the two love birds gave a nod to how they met...a running group that was training for the Medtronic Twin Cities T("($+&*A%R)11%W."9,%]0:)*(3%Tf^%<&*%$+,%&=,"(11%,=,*$%<)$+%(%$)/,%&;%6>?67A%4+,%!"#$%;,/(1,%!*)#+,"%<(#%R)11),%4)'',$$#%]0(2(*3%

continued their celebration at Cooper Pub & Restaurant with pints of FINNEGANS Irish Amber and tasty food. On Saturday, March 12, frigid temps and icy winds couldn’t keep 2,310 runners from celebrating their inner Irish. It was a colorful crowd indeed; from green braids and leprechaun slippers to a pot o’ gold at the end of an eightperson rainbow, runners showed their Irish style from head to toe. After sweating it out on the course, runners lined up to share a toast in the FINNEGANS postrace beer garden. The weather gave a whole new meaning to the term, “frosty beer.” But the celebration didn’t end at Lake Harriet. Green race shirts abounded at Cooper Irish Pub in West End, the perfect place to warm up with some traditional Irish fare and of course, more FINNEGANS. Thanks to the generous hearts (and feet) of our running community, 273 pairs of shoes were collected to be donated to the people of Haiti. Along with Claire Francis, the young woman behind Soles4Souls, we thank you for your generosity!

MEDTRONIC TC 1 MILE
Over 2,100 runners put their speed to the test at the Medtronic TC 1 Mile on May 12, 2011. Cooler temperatures and a persistent drizzle couldn’t dampen the spirits of the runners or the many spectators who showed their support along Nicollet Mall. Even Uncle Sam made an appearance, running in the Friends & Family wave and gathering recruits for July’s Red, White & Boom! TC Half Marathon. This year’s event also played host to the USA 1 Mile Road Championship for the third straight year. Elite men and women runners from around the country came to compete, but in the end it was David Torrence and Sara Hall atop the podium. David Torrence set a new course record with a blazingly fast 3:58.4 and won for a third time! Sarah Hall also set a course record with a time of 4:30.8. Both runners earned $10,000 “time bounties” in addition to their $4,000 winners’ checks. TC KIDS CROSS COUNTRY FUN RUN
Despite the rainy weather, a record number of kids joined us for the TC Kids Cross Country Fun Run held at Como Park in St. Paul. The event is one of three culminating events for the Medtronic TC Kids Marathon program, which provides free online training programs for 12week, 8week and 4week time periods. The day featured three different events run along the loop course: a half mile, mile and two mile. Team USA Minnesota athletes led warmups and drills while Radio Disney kept energy levels high with music and games. TCM mascots Harry and Shelly were there to participate in the fun by handing out medals and posing for pictures. After the races, all participants were invited to stay for a picnic lunch. The rain kept everyone underneath the two large picnic shelters but it didn’t dampen the celebratory spirit! Deep

TWINS TERRITORY TC 4K
On Sunday, August 7, Twins Territory TC 4K runners took over downtown Minneapolis. Starting near the Metrodome and ending up on the doorstep of Target Field, families, friends, siblings and newlyweds were among the more than 1,000 runners that took part in the second annual race. Many returning to the race for a second time, others running for their pure love of the Minnesota Twins, the 4K race was an event that that proved its love for the community and the state’s favorite baseball team.
