- LUCENA CLINI C A service of the Order of St. John of God " God Is Love " Lucena was the name of the house and the first hospital which Saint John of God opened in 1537 in the city of Granada, Spain. John had prayed: "God, grant me the favour and the time of having a house of hospitality w here the abandoned poor and the menta lly ill can be treated as I wish to treat them" To honour the 5th centenary of the birth of Sain t John of God in 1495, the Order has renamed its child and adolescent mental health services as Lueena Clinic. The Order wishes to extend the same hospitality shown by John to everyone who came seeking help, healing or shelter at his house on Lucena Street, to every child and family coming to any of the clinics at Rathgar; Taliaght; Dun Laoghaire, Bray, Wicklow and Arklow. 1 2 he Hospitaller Order of St John of God is a world-wide Catholic health care organisation providing services in forty six countries. THE ORDER The Order was founded by St. John of God in Granada, Spain. In 1537 he opened his first hospital on Lucena Street, w hich he called a house of hospitality. MISSION The mission of each Lucena Clinic is to provide a specialised and comprehensive menta l health service to the chi ldren and families of Dublin South and West and County Wicklow. The philosophy of the services of the Order of 51. John of God, based on the beliefs and values of the founder, is that people are the creation of God w ith intrinsic va lue and inherent dignity. This philosophy influences all our activities and obliges us to keep the dignity of the ind ividual at the heart of our mission. EDUCATION AND RESEARCH Lucena Clinic is committed to the education and training of its staff and mental healthcare professionals in a variety of disciplines. The Order is committed to furthering knowledge and understanding of mental health and the treatment of illness through research and educa tion . 4 and adolescents up to sixteen years of age with a vari ety of psychiatric, psychological, behavioural and emotional difficulties are accepted from general practitioners, from doctors in community care and from medical specialists in hospitals and clinics. 5 assessment is offered to each child and family by a team composed of a consultant child psychiatrist, a psychologist, a social wo rker and a speech and language therapist. Following assessment, a plan of intervention may include individual the rapy, grou p therapy, family therapy, psycho-educational assessment, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and drug therapy. Referrals may also be made to one of the tertiary services such as: - St. Peter's School - St _ Richard House - One of the Pre-school or other Group Therapy Programmes 6 Dunfillan House, Orwell Road, Rathgar in 1955 . It was the first clinic of its kind in Ireland . Today, Dunfillan House is the administra tive headquarters of the Lucena Clinic service. OUTPATIENT SERVICES Chi ldren and families referred to the clinic at Rathgar attend for assessment and outpatient services at the John McKenna Suite of room s located at the reception area, JOHN STACK HOUSE A therapeutic programme providing a diagnostic, assessment and treatment service for pre-school children who have emotional, developmental and language difficu lties. Children are helped to overcome these difficulties through the medium of play. A clinical team including nursing and care staff work with the children . 7 ... is a special nation al school w hich accepts child ren with learning, behavioural and emotional difficulti es. Teachers and care staff togeth er along w ith th e clinical tea m w ork to provide a th erapeutic approach within the school. Therapy is also provided for the fam ilies of the pupils. Bus Routes15, 15A, 158, 15C , 47, 47 A, 478, 14, 14A . ST. RICHARD HOUSE ... is a small hospital unit for th e treatm ent of ten child ren/ adolescents and thei r fa milies. The focus of St Richard House is to treat the children and adolescents w hile involving th em in day-to-day activities such as: school; meeting w ith their fam ily and fri ends; and leisure. 8 _ Llcerla Clinic, Century Court, Upper George's St., Dun Laoghaire is the latest of the Clinics to be opened. Origi nal ly founded in 1971 at Blackrock, Lucena Clinic moved to Century Court in 1995 . OUTPATIENT SERVICES Assessment and treatment services are provided to ch ildren and families living in the Dun Laog haire / Rathdown area and Southeast Dublin. A therapy programme is provided for pre-school children as well as individual and group therapy sessions for older children. The clinical team at Dun Laoghaire provides a consultation service to residential homes for child ren in the area and also to Benincasa special school in Blackrock. 10 ucena Clinic, Bray offers outpatient assessment and treatment services for children and famili es living in East Wicklow at Sessa House, Vevay Road, close to th e Town Hall. Bus Routes 84, 45, 45A, 85 11 WICKLOW TOWN AND ARKLOW Clinic sessions are also provided on a regular basis in Wicklow Town and Arklow. Children from county Wicklow may avail of the th erapy programmes provided at Lucena Clinic, Century Court, Dun Laoghaire. 12 first opened in 1972 . In 1983 the present Lucena Clinic was built adjacent to 'The Square' on Blessington Road. In 1991 group therapy rooms were added for pre-school and older chi ldren.
