STRENGTHENING
OUR COMMUNITY
MESSAGE FROM CEO,
FREDERICK CHEEK
At the YMCA of Greater Flint, Strengthening Our Community is our cause.
For the first time in 43 years the National YMCA movement has unveiled a new brand strategy.
There’s a fresh new logo, new color combinations and a new unified voice to communicate
our mission to the public. Our logo is new, but our mission remains the same – to put
Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and
body for all.
At the YMCA of Greater Flint, our mission can be felt when you walk into our facilities
or see the excitement on the faces of our campers at Camp Copneconic. People of all ages
and walks of life are making connections at our Branches and Camps. Our 30,514 members,
program participants, students and campers are improving their health, growing as individuals,
and strengthening their families.
On behalf of the YMCA of Greater Flint, I’d like to thank our donors and volunteers, for joining
us to make a difference in our community. Your time, talent and resources have enabled us to
welcome everyone and empower people to be healthy, confident, connected and secure. Our
board members have led with wisdom and compassion, our partners have worked tirelessly
beside us, and our amazing staff has consistently exceeded expectations. We are deeply
grateful to all of you. We invite you to join us in celebrating the highlights on the following
pages which give evidence to how we are strengthening our community!

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
GIVING BACK AND PROVIDING SUPPORT TO OUR NEIGHBORS
2010 HIGHLIGHTS
Partner with Youth Campaign
In 2010, the YMCA of Greater Flint continued its mission of making the Y
accessible for all. During the annual Partner with Youth Campaign, $364,000 was raised
to support the Y’s financial assistance program which ensures no one is turned away
from the Y, because of their inability to pay. We thank the 694 donors who support
the Y annually in this way. The increase in donations allowed the Y to serve over 8,500
people in our community with scholarships.
One parent whose child received a scholarship to camp wrote, “The memories you have
helped her to create will last a lifetime and I am so grateful to your entire staff for
making this possible. Thank you to all of those who had a part in providing her with a
scholarship so that she could attend.”
2010 YMCA of Greater Flint Golf Scramble
Spring Meadows Country Club in Linden was the host site of the 24th Annual YMCA of Greater
Flint Golf Scramble on June 21st. This marks
the second consecutive year the scramble has
called Spring Meadows home. Ninety-two
golfers took part in the event that was blessed
with sun soaked weather which lead to some
impressive score postings and great fellowship.
The 2010 Woody Skaff Sportsmanship award
was presented to Dan Straka and King Par
for their strong annual partnership with
the event. Dan is the key representative
of King Par’s commitment to the event
and the YMCA. Dan is responsible for
annually supporting the event with
equipment donations that reach in total value to well over $4,000 each year.
Thanks to all those who supported this wonderful event, the YMCA of Greater Flint
raised over $5,600 dollars! Proceeds from the event go toward the Woody Skaff
Scholarship Fund as well as the Partner with Youth Campaign.
Preserving a Piece of Camp History
There are certain places in the world that hold a special place in our hearts.
For the many hundreds of thousands of people who have been a part of Camp
Copneconic over the years, Allen Lodge is that place. Since 3pm on a June 13th in 1929,
Allen Lodge has been a place to eat a hot meal, worship, grow, and make new friends. Allen
Lodge has had a rich history since its completion. It was Copneconic’s dining hall, staff
house, program building, and home to the camp office until 1998. One of its most notable
features is the incredible fireplaces and chimneys. It is amazing to think how many campers
over the years have enjoyed a s’more in Allen Lodge.
Upon the completion of camp’s new dining facility, Copneconic Lodge, in 2001, Allen
Lodge has been a refuge from the sometimes unpredictable Michigan weather. Camp uses
this great space for indoor campfires, arts and crafts classes, team building initiatives,
staff retreats, and much more! In the past month, Allen Lodge has begun a makeover. We
are replacing the roof, removing the old bathrooms, putting on a fresh coat of paint, and
replacing some doors and windows! Our hope is that this is the first step to ensuring that
Allen Lodge is around for many more generations of Copneconic campers to enjoy!
Partnerships
The YMCA of Greater Flint is honored to play an integral role in
several partnerships, which allow us to service more youth in our
communities in an impactful way. Partnerships range from providing
summer camp experiences for special need youth to teaching an
entire school to swim. Through our extensive partnerships, we are
continuing to positively impact our community in the areas of youth
development, healthy living and social responsibility.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
NURTURING THE POTENTIAL OF EVERY CHILD AND TEEN
2010 Highlights
KaBOOM & Home Depot Playground
Constructed at Camp
Camp Copneconic received two generous grants to build a new
KaBOOM playground at our Day Camp facility in June of 2010.
Home Depot sponsored the estimated $65,000 in construction
costs and the YMCA of Greater Flint Foundation matched $15,000
to create this unique playground facility. KaBOOM! is a national
non-profit dedicated to saving play for America's children. They are
also committed
to creating playscapes through the participation and leadership of communities. After a group of children
designed the playground, KaBOOM staffers facilitated the complete playground project management. Over 200
Home Depot employees combined with 50 plus board members, YMCA staff and community volunteers, worked
together successfully to build a playground in just one day. A huge thank you to everyone involved.
Pierson Road Receives Huggies Swimming Grant
Pierson Road YMCA was one of 148 YMCA’s nation-wide to receive the $1,000 Huggies Grant. The
intention of this grant is to help raise awareness of Preschool Swimming Lessons and the benefits of
starting children in swimming lessons at a younger age. Grant monies were used to promote the current
parent/child swimming lesson programs in the communities that the Pierson Road YMCA services.
SOS Program
During 2010, the YMCA continued its partnerships with Northridge Academy through its Saving
Our Schools Program (SOS), made possible by the Partner with Youth Campaign. Over the course
of the year the Y welcomed over 150 students from Northridge. These students participated in
swimming lessons, water safety, and character development.
Every child at Northridge Academy now knows how to swim and feels safe and confident in the
water because of the SOS Program. Several students even moved beyond the swimming basics,
learning several different swimming stokes. One participant wrote about the program, “I learned
I should never give up on what I’m trying to do, and I should try to swim before I say that I
can’t swim.”
It is clear that this program will have a lastly impact on the lives of these children who were able
to participate because of the Partner with Youth Campaign.
Flint Falcons
The Flint YMCA Falcons enjoyed another successful season. Thirty swimmers competed in the
YMCA 8 & Under state meet where they placed second. Sixty-eight swimmers competed in the
YMCA Cluster meet where they placed second. The Falcons had fifty swimmers participate in the
YMCA Zone meet in Columbus, Ohio where they again placed second. Seventeen swimmers will
compete in the YMCA Short Course Nationals in Florida.
HEALTHY LIVING
IMPROVING OUR COMMUNITY’S HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
YMCA Santa Run
2010 was the inaugural year of the YMCA Santa 5k Run/Walk. The event was a resounding
success with over 650 participants, all dressed as Santa, walking and running through the
streets in Flint. Families, children in strollers, cub scout troops, coworkers and friends all
participated in the event that one participant claimed, “was destined to become a Flint area
holiday tradition.”
Fun and fitness was the mission of this untimed event and based on the smiles and laughter
of the participants was overwhelmingly accomplished. Christmas music, choirs and cookies
all helped to set a festive mood for those participating. Over $9,000 was donated from the
event to the YMCA’s Partner with Youth Campaign and over 200 toys were donated to Toys
for Tots.
Y-Get Fit Weight Loss Challenge
For many of us, the New Year brings with it a clean slate. We are anxious to begin implementing new strategies to make
this year better than the last. Most of our goals have a major emphasis on feeling better about ourselves and creating a healthier
lifestyle. Such was the case for new YMCA member David Zamora: Another clean slate, and another revelation that this year was going
to be different. Early in January, David was driving by the Pierson Road YMCA as he did just about every day, but this time he took
notice of the sign encouraging him to join the Get Fit Weight Loss Challenge. He did join…and will tell anyone who wants to hear about
it. Over the course of the six week challenge David lost over 18 pounds and more importantly connected with a group of people that
challenged each other to stay the course. “I started off in my fitness journey by myself, but the Fitness Challenge got me connected
with an awesome staff that encouraged me to do more than I ever thought I could do. The accountability with other individuals is what
has made all the difference in why I am sticking with it this year.”
23 Participants took part in the winter session of the Get Fit Challenge. As a group, the participants lost 130 pounds, or as someone
put it, “we lost a whole person!”
