Page 3 Our 2016 High School Graduates Maya will be studying molecular biology at Haveford College in Pennsylvania and playing on the women’s tennis team. Maya was the Team Captain of the Varsity Tennis Team. And a violin member of the Mansfield Symphony youth Orchestra and Lexington High School Symphony Orchestra. The Co-captain of the Varsity Academic Challenge and has traveled extensively to Bangladesh. Malaysia, Ecuador, Australia, Canada , Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Mexico. Maya is interested in studying abroad a possibly looking for a career in research. Her passions are reading, traveling, and sailing. Maya also likes to babysit. Joseph began school at River View in Coshocton, and transferred to Mount Vernon High School his sophomore year. During high school, he ran Cross Country all four years and was in the Spanish Club. Joseph also participated in two mission trips to the Nehemiah Mission in Cleveland through Gay Street UMC. Hs is looking forward to attending Mount Vernon Nazarene University in the fall and studying computer science. Olivia graduated from Mount Vernon High School. She was the Mount Vernon High School yearbook photographer and school event videographer. She also participated in Key Club for two yeas and was a senior mentor for the Freshman class, Master of Ceremonies for the 2016 Forum Show and a student codirector for the 2015 Forum Show. Some of her passions include traveling, photographer, short feature films, athletics, and is quite obsessed with Ellen DeGeneres. Olivia is planning on furthering her education at the University of Akron, majoring in Media Arts and Studies and minoring in International Business. Braxton was a three year Varsity Letterman for Cross Country and Track. He announced all JV and Varsity MTV girls games all through high school. He was a library helper for four years. He was involved his freshman year with Key Club and Christian Fellow Athletics. He received the Kiwanis award for going into Computer Science. Braxton will attend DeVry University this fall majoring in Cyber Security and Computer Forensics. Delaney's graduation has brought an odd combination of sadness and excitement. She has played clarinet since fifth grade and piano for the last seven years. She has been a participant of marching band, concert band, and symphonic band and solo and ensemble adjudicated events. Music is definitely not just s hobby but a passion. She has enjoyed working with the children at Gay Street UMC the past few years. That enjoyment has inspired her to pursue a degree in early childhood education at Bowling Green State University. She is excited about this new phase in her life and, although we will miss her, we are excited to see what the next few years have in store for her. She's definitely ready for it! VOLUME 55, ISSUE 7 Page 4 Youth Bell Choir Graduating Seniors Heather Stewart has been leading the Youth Bell Choir for a number of years and had the following to say about the two youth bell choir members who have just graduated. Delaney Doup…Delaney is a girl after my own heart. She is one of the most driven people I know, especially when it comes to music. She was very direct at the end of last year which pieces we were to play for their last time playing as Seniors and all I could say was….okay! Delaney likes things to be done well and is always ready to play something just one more time. (this gets many groans from the boys in the back but we play it again anyway) This is a sign of a good musician and the bell choir’s accomplishments this year demonstrated this drive. We did some very difficult pieces and her leadership and strong musical skills are two of the many reasons we accomplished what we did. Delaney is a very versatile player. No matter where I needed her to play or to sub, she could do it all. She has been a regular substitute for the adult Wesley Ringers also. Delaney will be missed dearly and even though I jokingly begged her to find a way to stay a senior for next year, she passed with flying colors. We are all so proud of Delaney’s accomplishments and the person she has become. Good luck at Bowling Green! Olivia LaBenne and Delaney Doup Olivia LaBenne…Olivia, Olivia, Olivia. The word shenanigator comes to mind when I think of Olivia (which is a word I made up just for Olivia. It is a person that instigates shenanigans). She was always there at every practice with a smile. Olivia was one of the few (Delaney is another) that would be excited after a break from bells on when practices would begin. This warmed my heart. Over the years, I would move her around also and she would take new bell positions in stride. She would always have us all laughing throughout practice. Her personality was great and made bells fun for those who were not always happy to be there. There was never a dull moment. Even though I called her a shenanigator at times, she was a great role model for the choir. We are all so proud of Olivia’s accomplishments and the person she has become. Good luck at the University of Akron! It has been 4 years since I’ve had to say goodbye to seniors. We have been this tight knit little family for those 4 years. There have been very little changes in the make-up of the group and they all work together really well. They act like brothers and sisters almost (sometimes it even comes to using middle names!), which is both good and bad at times. They can anticipate each other, knows each other’s ability…and can somehow tell who is playing a wrong note or rhythm and will speak up before I can open my mouth. The hole these two have left will be hard to fill. The standard has been set though. As your director, I have prayed for you from the beginning and that will not stop. Watching you grow up from a 4 year old children’s choir member to a graduating Senior, both makes me feel really old and privileged to have been a small part of it. We have gone through many things as a group…The death of friends, rejoiced in milestones, admired homecoming and prom hair do’s, talked about teachers and which are the better options at MVHS…many things. The memories made will last forever. Thank you for your service to Gay Street UMC as a Youth Handbell Choir member and best of luck in the next chapter of your lives. - picture courtesy of Randy Bowers VOLUME 55, ISSUE 7 Page 5 Our Missionaries - Mary and Aaron Vandersommers We were delighted to have Mary and Aaron with us for worship on May 29. Mary preached on the Congo and Romans 5:1-5, and Aaron gave the Children’s message. During their time stateside after their commissioning at General Conference, they attended New York Annual Conference, Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference and East Ohio Annual Conference. They are now back in Kinshasa, where according to an email from Mary their weather is the “winter season” or “dry season” - it is 80 degrees and the folks all have their jackets on! Mary and Aaron do not feel the need to don a jacket! VOLUME 55, ISSUE 7 Page 6 East Ohio Annual Conference 2016 recap from our Delegates-at-large Lakeside Chautauqua was once again the charmed setting for the “holy conferencing” of the East Ohio Annual Conference, a setting that in the words of retiring Bishop John Hopkins evokes “passionate worship, warm fellowship, and a desire to serve.” Six Gay Streeters attended worship and business sessions as lay and clergy delegates: Marshall and Marjorie Winkle, Lauren Miller, Roger Marra, Pastor Denise, Megan Durbin, and Wayne Dunlop. Highlights of the Conference included worship services with dynamic preaching by Guest Bishops Peter Weaver and Gregory Palmer and celebration of Bishop Hopkins’ retirement as he officiated over his final sessions of a 12-year tenure as Bishop of the East Ohio Conference. While the business sessions were conducted with considerable order and creativity under the strong leadership of Bishop Hopkins, for many the highlight of the 4-day conference was the challenging, Spirit-filled preaching by the guest bishops guided by the Conference theme: Jesus is Calling Us Out. Delegates were challenged to be ambassadors in their local churches (1) to move beyond the walls of our buildings “out” into the neighboring community with both “heart” gospel and social gospel , and (2) to encourage the making disciples of Jesus Christ as opposed to focusing on building church membership. Dallas Willard (not associated with the Conference) calls this lack of passion for making disciples in our congregations as “the Great Omission” in the Christian Church. Megan participated in the 5K Run raising $290 for Conference Missions and is already looking forward to next year’s event. Very much within the spirit of the Conference, there were many occasions for celebrating Bishop Hopkins’ retirement. Expressions of gratefulness for the numerous accomplishments under his wise and caring leadership generously mixed with many instances of lively humor and 1,100-delegate-strong laughter. The Conference was indeed a time of good business conducted, wonderful fellowship, and thrilling worship. - Wayne Dunlop, Delegate-at Large The theme of conference this year was “Jesus is Calling Us Out”, however; our secondary theme was a celebration of Bishop John and Elaine Hopkins 12 years of service with the East Ohio Conference. Many of the presentations dealt with ways that we as a conference have responded to Jesus’s call and the support and encouragement we have gotten from Bishop Hopkins. Credit was given to Bishop Hopkins as he lead us to be responsible stewards of our treasure through missions, support of our conference youth, scholarships, multicultural leadership, his 3C’s initiative (churches, clinics, and classrooms) and his enabling youth to consider ministry. Bishop Hopkins kept us “on track” throughout the business of the conference, always inspired us with his sermons and was not above having some fun as he played his guitar for us and participated in skits which further supported his reputation for being deeply involved in all aspects of conference activity. Thank you Bishop John and Elaine Hopkins for serving us in His Love. - Marjorie Winkle, UMW Delegate - Marshall Winkle, Delegate-at-Large VOLUME 55, ISSUE 7 Page 7 In Loving Memory On May 29, 2016 the following persons were memorialized through gifts to the Gay Street United Methodist Church Living Memorial Fund June 2015 through May 2016: Barbara Jones, Emily Gordon, Gertrude Peiffer, Ernest Rehling and Lucille Bowden. Plaques with their names engraved on them have been added to the wall plaque in the upstairs parlor. A lovely bench has been placed in the outside courtyard in memory of Linny McNeill by her family, friends and members of the United Methodist Women Glora Wysner Circle. Wooden Cross Making Jack Scott hosted the 7 & 8th grade Sunday School Class at his home workshop recently. He showed them how to make wooden crosses. A good time was had by all! VOLUME 55, ISSUE 7 -pics by Frances Irvin Page 9 Financial Update - Sherri Pembrook, Finance Chair Can you believe that we are almost halfway through 2016?! These first few months have slipped by and an update on our financial position is overdue. We've all heard the saying, "No news is good news" and I'm happy to report that it is true for us this year. Budget income for this year is right on target, totaling $211,000 through the end of May. Complimenting that, the staff (and others) have done an excellent job of controlling expenses. Controlled expenses, coupled with the staffing changes from earlier this year, has resulted in expenses being $27,000 below budget! And so, with your generosity and conscious expense control, we are 'in the black' $33,000! While the year isn't over, with your continued support, we’ll finish strong. Standing on their own, the budget numbers are truly spectacular, but our story doesn't end there. In addition to more than covering our budgeted expenses, our legacy of supporting missions continues. Nearly $24,000 has been given to the various missions supported by our congregation at Gay Street UMC. This includes a generous donation of over $1,000 for the DRC Seed Project and $2,600 Mary Vandersommer's Advance Special number. Locally, $1,500 has been given toward the Diaper Drive, $1,100 for Winter Sanctuary, and $3,800 for Work Missions. Many of us associate summer with sun, fun, and vacation. However, it also signals the start of a couple of important financial duties. Over the next few months, the Finance Committee will be working on the budget for 2017. Our goal is to have it ready to be approved at Charge Conference in October, but it can also be approved by Church Council before December 1. Celebration Sunday is set for November 13, so our stewardship team will be working on the campaign for this year. Thank you for your support of the missions and ministries of Gay Street UMC, through your prayers, gifts, presence, service and witness. With your help, we are making a difference in the lives of others. Thank You Dear Rev. Lauren Miller and Gay Street United Methodist Church Family, I wanted to extend my sincerest thank you for awarding me the White/Wright/Ritter scholarship. This contribution will go a long way in not only easing my college expenses at Duke University, but also providing me with the confidence to face next semesters challenges. I am comforted by the support of our loving church family. I look forward to conquering my intellectual and spiritual goals in the coming years, and I take pride in the wonderful upbringing provided to me by Mount Vernon and specifically Gay Street United Methodist Church. Respectfully, Levi Rhoades, Duke Class of 2019 Thank you for the very thoughtful graduation gifts! The Church as been such an important part of my life. I am so blessed to have such a strong Church family to support me. Much love & thanks!
