Cast Iron Firebacks
W
hile many regard our firebacks as purely decorative
pieces, they do indeed serve several
very practical purposes. Solid cast
iron firebacks absorb heat and then
radiate it directly into the room,
making the fireplace much more
efficient in heating the house.
Also, firebacks protect firebricks,
increasing the life of the fireplace.
Firebacks are designed to rest on
the floor of the hearth, however,
fireback “boots” may be used to
hold the fireback upright and raise
it off the hearth floor if extra
height is desired. May be used with
gas log or wood burning fireplaces.

ince the 15 century, the fireback has been an indispensable
part of the fireplace tradition in Europe. Standing at the back
of the fireplace, the fireback protects the firebrick from damage
and radiates heat from the fire out into the room.

The colonists carried this tradition to America and you can still
today add that touch of elegance and history to your fireplace
while improving its function and preserving its brickwork as you
enhance the beauty of the focal point of the room.

A Little Bit on Our Involvement in the Community
Since 2004, ACHLA Designs and Minuteman International along
with the City of Fitchburg have sponsored an Annual Blacksmith Art
& Music Festival. It is held in the Fall at Riverfront Park in downtown
Fitchburg, Massachusetts. The event is open to the public, and it has
garnered substantial support from neighboring communities. It is
now held in partnership with Fitchburg Art Museum. The goal of the
festival is to:

aise awareness of the art & craft of black-smithy. We in New England are fortunate to have many
talented blacksmiths living and working in the region. We hope to eventually draw competitors from all
over the U.S.
2. D
evelop a friendly, competitive and congenial fellowship among blacksmiths:
students, hobbyists and professional craftsmen and women. $5000 in cash prizes
and gift items are awarded for various categories of competition.
Riverfront Park is an open, viable space
in the heart of the city on the bank of

Nashua River. Minuteman International
has donated a trellis-like structure which
stands at the site. The theme of this
trellis is “Life Around the River”.
Competitors submit 18" x 18" panels
which become permanent parts of this
trellis.
Every year the festival committee invites
a well known Master blacksmith to judge
the competition and demonstrate his/her craft. These live
demonstrations have become a highlight of the event.
