On behalf of Reuse Alliance’s Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for joining us
for ReuseConex 2012, the 2nd International Reuse Conference and Expo. Reuse
Alliance is proud to host a unique event which brings together such a diverse and
resourceful community of individuals and organizations. Our goal with ReuseConex was
to create an environment where we can come together to network, explore common
challenges and opportunities, and share ideas and best practice.
We hope you will enjoy the conference and its theme: Growing Reuse Communities.
Reuse contributes to the economic, social and environmental fabric of our communities.
At ReuseConex you will learn top tips and replicable models from reuse professionals
that represent almost every aspect of reuse – from repair and upcycling to reusables and

On behalf of the City of Portland, we are honored to be hosting this year’s ReuseConex
International Reuse Conference and Expo. Portland is a national leader in the sustainability
movement and I hope that you find that it is an ideal place to explore ways to improve awareness
of, and access to, reuse opportunities.

Keynote Address:
When Kyle Wiens and a friend started
iFixit at college, he had no idea that what
they started would become the world’s
largest online repair community.
Today, iFixit’s online platform provides
intuitive step-by-step repair guides
and a discussion forum for a growing
international community.
Every day iFixit helps thousands of people repair their devices. iFixit does
this because companies don’t provide repair parts and documentation to
end users, and iFixit believes everyone should have the right to maintain
and repair their products. By sharing repair knowledge, everyone has more
control over what happens to their stuff. iFixit wants to make that possible
for everyone in the world to know how to fix anything. The easier it is to fix
something, the more people will do it. After all, a ten-minute repair session
is often all it takes to save an item from the landfill.
Wien’s address will cover the important links between repair/reuse,
environmental and economic sustainability; as well as access to
information and community building.
Biography:
Kyle Wiens is the co-founder and CEO of iFixit, an online repair community
internationally renowned for their open source repair manuals and product
teardowns. Launched out of his Cal Poly college dorm room in 2003, iFixit
has now empowered upwards of 15 million people to repair their broken
stuff. In 2012, he started Dozuki, a software company that is revolutionizing
online technical documentation for manufacturers. Kyle is a board member
of the IEEE CE Society and Softec. He has testified on electronic exports
in front of the International Trade Commission and is actively involved in
developing global environmental standards.
Kyle regularly speaks on design for disassembly, technical writing, repair,
service documentation, and the environmental impact of electronics at
forums like MacWorld, eScrap, and TeKom. He also regularly writes for
media outlets including The Atlantic, Harvard Business Review, Wired,
TreeHugger and iFixit.org.
