HERALD MAY 6 6 12 19 19-21 JUNE 1 3 3 9 16 16 14-17 25 28-01 The Weld County Food Bank Poker run was Sunday after our meeting. Our Relay For Life Poker Run will take place next Saturday, May 12; registration is at the Dealership from 9-10:30a.m. The 3-day ride to Minden, NE, is in 2 weeks; you can still sign up. You will need to call and make your own hotel reservations at the Pioneer Village Motel at 308-832-2750. This is more an endurance ride - 350 miles. We will be leaving from the dealership on Saturday, May 19, at 9 am. Please try to be there by 8:30. Please bring a bright bandana, preferably orange, to tie on your arm if you are planning to visit the Pioneer Museum. The cost will be $11 if we go as a group on May 20. There will also be a dinner ride to Smokin’ Daves in Lyons on Saturday, May 19, that will leave from the dealership at the usual time of 5:30p.m. Check out the Upcoming Events above for all the June happenings. Our annual HOG Picnic will be after our meeting on July 8 at Monfort Park. Be thinking of games you would like to play, both on and off bike. Feel free to email me or any of the Activities officers with ideas. We will have sign-up sheets for volunteers for help with the games at the next meeting. The Taos 3-day ride is coming up Friday-Sunday, July 20-22. You still have lots of time to sign up, but it is time to start planning. We will leave at 9 am from the dealership, as it also is an endurance ride of 350 miles. Again, you need to call for your reservations at the Sun God Motel at 575-758-3162. Hope to get a Saturday night party organized in the motel’s courtyard for just us. At the meeting, I asked everyone to stand up, then “Sit if you are going on the Minden ride”, then “Sit if you are going on the Taos ride…dinner ride to Smokin’ Dave’s…Weld Food Bank Poker Run today…Relay For Life Poker Run next weekend…Colorado State Rally…Sturgis”. Unbelievably, there were actually a few people still standing after all that! You can’t say that we don’t have the opportunity to ride with this Club!! See you out there, sunny side up! Margaret & Richard Impromptu Rides We have started an Impromptu Ride email list. The idea is that anyone on the list that is going for a ride can email the list and see if anyone wants to ride along. For those that don't check your email very often, please provide a phone number and carrier (Verizon, AT&T, etc). We can try to send the emails to your phone as a text message. To be added to the list, go to the following website: herkymail.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/hog1462ride If you have any questions, please contact me. Jim Taylor [email protected] or text me at 307:222-2121 Jim Taylor, Webmaster & Photographer Page 4 From Our Safety Guy After 35 years of marriage, a husband and wife came for counseling. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a passionate, painful tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the years they had been married. On and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured. Finally, after allowing this for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he embraced and kissed her long and passionately as her husband watched - with a raised eyebrow. The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, “This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you do this?” “Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish.” Quilt T-Shirts Anyone who has H-D t-shirts suitable for use on next year’s quilts, can drop them off at the dealership now. Please see if you can part with any of your “international” shirts. From Our Director Amazing time in San Diego with fellow HOGS from all over the country and our local representatives from Greeley: Jim Taylor, Terry and Tory Hanson, Brent Langdon, Robert Aughinbaugh and Roger Myers. I encourage anyone wanting to get more involved to attend next year’s event. It amazes me the brotherhood that we have on a local basis as well as worldwide. HOG just does it right! I'm very proud to be a part of HOG 1462 and the friendships I have developed over the last 9 years. Hello again from Safety! This month we discussed the very interesting and sometimes humorous task of overloading your bike. Each model has a specific GVW or gross vehicle weight. This is the maximum weight that the bike has been built to hold, including the rider, passenger and all packing contents. Through the use of video at the meeting, we displayed the one who might have a tendency to overload the bike with so much weight that stability and safety are not part of the ride. They will do whatever is necessary to carry their gear to the selected location. Proper loading of your ride takes some preliminary preparations. Select only those items that you need to live with. Many items that we believe are necessary are actually options. Careful planning aids greatly in having enjoyment on the trip or being miserable the entire duration. To aid you in your planning, packing and participating in the ride of choice, I have located a specific website to aid in your calculating the proper weight distribution between riders, passenger and packed materials. It allows you to select your bike by year and weights of both parties. For those of you whose bikes are not listed, the GVW is listed in your owner’s manual and can be used to help you calculate your safe riding weights. Hope you enjoy! Thanks for the great ideas for future talks. I trust that you are learning about safety while you are having fun. I'm gone, the sun's almost up and the Harley is runnin’!! http://www.unsafemotorcycles.com/weight_and_riders _form.html Robert Aughinbaugh, Safety Officer "There is only one success--to be able to spend your life in your own way". -Christopher Morley Rob Herr, Director Still my cutie after 37 years! Page 5 From Our Sponsoring Dealer Dear H.O.G. 1462 members, Is your bike ready to go for the season? Have you checked your tires lately? Call Chuck, Jason, or Garrett in Service to get make sure your ride is ready this year. I need your help for a special event this month… Saturday, May 19, 6-8pm--Ladies Night in Motorclothes & Men’s Night in Service We all have friends and family who are interested in riding someday but just haven’t taken the next step yet. Please bring someone who is new to riding, guy or gal, we have a fun night planned for both. What’s going on at the shop in May? Our Service Department opens at 7:30 am for early bird drop-offs. We’re open Mon-Sat from 9am-6pm and Sunday from 11am-5pm. Our Rental Department is offering 2012 models; call Ray at 970-351-8150 for reservations. Summer Open House on Saturday, May 26 Our annual party to start the summer off includes a free hog roast, free beer, and a bikini bike wash you’ll have to see to believe. All donations from this event benefit Relay for Life and help our chapter reach its goal. Bring your friends and family to the shop and enjoy our free BBQ every Saturday all summer long. We’re grilling up hot dogs and burgers from 11am to 2pm every Saturday. Our showroom is full, and we’re getting about 10 new Harleys every week, so stop in often and check out the latest 2012 bikes. Thanks for your support, ride on. Steve Larson, Manager of Greeley Harley-Davidson From Ladies of Harley I want to extend a HUGE Thank You to all the members who helped with the garage sale on April 14th. The weather held out for us and we had a great turnout. We made $441 which was awesome considering we didn't have any "big ticket" items this year. Thank you again for all your help. Our LOH Relay for Life Poker Run will be held on THIS Saturday, May 12. Please come and help support your local HOG team for this fund raising event. Sign-up starts at the Dealership with last card at 10:30. The final card stop is the Plantation. We filled all our volunteer slots after the meeting. The weather should be great, so we look forward to a great turnout on Saturday. On Saturday, June 9, LOH will be riding to Estes Park for a day of lunch and shopping. We hope you can join us, and, as always, the Men of Harley are invited as well. Thank you all for supporting your LOH. Laura Clark, LOH Officer Relay for Life In addition to our LOH Relay For Life Poker Run on May12, we are also planning a bake sale at the shop on Saturday, May 19. The more baked goods we sell, the more funds we raise, so if you haven’t already signed up to bake, please find the clipboard with the sign-up sheet out on the table. If you can’t bake, BUY! On Saturday, May 26, Wildwest Motorsports will hold their huge Annual Open House. Instead of tip jars that day, the food servers and the bike washers will have donation jars for our Relay team. Steve & Jenny, we appreciate that more than you will ever know. So, everyone should fill up those jars! I know I said that, since our theme was “Wild About Relay”, we would just go with a wilderness, camping scenario. At the last Captains’ meeting, the chair people changed things up a little bit by acting a little WILD. That made me start thinking about maybe us being “wild and crazy guys”; but then we would all have to go to the ARC Thrift Store and buy up all the plaid pants we could find. Better yet, we could stick to our image of being simply “WILD HOGS”. Of course, the other campers wouldn’t appreciate it if we starting riding our bikes through the campsites. So, if you come up with any wild ideas, please let me know. We are not in the same campsite where we have been previous years. We are in #66 which is just a little south of our past site across from the east parking lot. Luminarias are bags that people can buy for $10 each; they take them home and decorate them in honor of a loved one that they have lost to cancer or in celebration of one that has beaten cancer. The day of Relay, the luminarias are placed around the track and are lit when it gets dark enough. This year is the first time that the money raised from the luminaria sales actually goes to a specific team. So if anyone is interested in buying one today, get with me after the meeting. Just bring it back Page 6 to me decorated along with the $10 by May 22, and we’ll get it out there to commemorate your loved one. Please, everyone, come out and join us for the team lap. The HOGs always make quite an impression walking around that track. I always tell you at the beginning of the Relay season that I am not the cheerleader that Lorri Wilson was. I just want to keep this going to remember our members that have succumbed to cancer and to celebrate ALL of the MANY survivors in our group. We are so grateful for the donation from the Greeley HOG group, for the money that will come from the LOH Poker Run, and for the money that the Dealership gives us from the tips at their Open House on the 26. Whereas we appreciate so much the large sums that we get, NOW is when I grovel at your feet and beg you to give your individual donation to the American Cancer Society. Last month we had over 100 people at our meeting; just think if every one of those members each gave 10 bucks toward this cause. Last year we came in third, and that was quite a surprise! I’m not a goal-driven person; I feel as though we should always do our best and be happy with the results. So, let’s work together for the very best result this year. I’ll keep my little purple bucket close , so you can feel free to fill it up or you can certainly donate to our team (Greeley H.O.G.) on the website weldrelay.org! Thank you so much for all your help and all your generosity! Donations can still be made online - Weldrelay.org Look for Greeley HOG. ROAD CAPTAINS: Mark thanked those that helped out on the Road Captain’s poker run last month as well as Kenny and Terri for the dinner ride this past month. Mark indicated the overnighter to Minden will be 330 miles. It is an easy ride but will require some endurance with how long it is. This ride would be classified as a 3 on a scale of 1-5. Be at the dealer on time. He thanked Bill Richards and Ken Lutz for being Road Captain’s on that ride. Dinner ride to Smokin’s Dave’s, Roger and Fish will lead the ride on Saturday 05/19. Mark went over group riding tips. Arrive prepared for a group ride. Be gassed up and do the pre-ride check. Have the correct Page 7 gear with you. Mark had copies of MSF video that you can watch. See Mark for a copy. SAFETY OFFICERS: See Article. Webmaster: Jim indicated on the front page of hog1462 there are now “Rider’s Rides” displayed. Send pictures to Jim and he will put 3 or 4 pictures up every month. He learned at HOT that what had been a private on getting out our message out on the Chapter will now be a public thing so he will be opening it up on Facebook. There will still be a private area where only our Chapter can get to. Membership Officer: Ken indicated we have 166 members. He has name tags if you have not received your name tag, check with Ken. DEALERSHIP: See article. MEMBER MOMENTS: Deneanne Johnson, Lynn Kennedy, and Kenny Love all had surgery recently and we want to wish them all a speedy recovery to get back on their bikes. To commemorate the death of any immediate family member of a HOG member, our Club donates $50 to Triangle Cross Ranch in their name. The Chapter will be donating $150 to TCR in the names of Vicki Wright’s sister, Penny; Jan McCall’s mother, Harriet; and Sally Lutz’s brother, Dave, who have passed away. Paula Taylor is now a published author with her book that has gone to print “F.E. Warren Air Force Base”. Gerry Morris turned 60 this past week. OLD BUSINESS: Our officers that attended the Harley Officer’s Training (H.O.T.) in San Diego reported that it was very beneficial and encouraged anyone interested in serving as an officer to try and go in the future. Some commented that many great ideas were shared and that officers from other groups seemed to be extremely interested in the success of our AWESOME club. All of these attending officers thanked the Chapter and the dealer for sending them and are looking forward to sharing what they learned with the group. Roger Meyers rode his bike to San Diego and put on 2600 miles. Rob said a lot of the other Chapters do not get a lot of dealer support and thanked Steve for the way they support the Chapter. Steve added that supporting us is easy, and they are blessed to have our Chapter. Ron Williams said that, even after visiting the other local chapters to encourage participation in the golf challenge, there has been zero response. He said they are looking at doing a golf outing just for Greeley H.O.G. and will adjust the cost. He asked for those that really want to participate to put your name on the list and he will take it from there. Allen Klein reported that tonight was our Front Range shooting night. Arrive at 5:15PM, so we will be ready to take the range at 5:30PM. Don’t forget your eye and ear protection. NEW BUSINESS: One goal this year was to “Grow and Simplify”. Rob wants to put a challenge out to our members regarding the “growing” part. There will be two $100 certificates given to the two people that bring in the most new members this year: one certificate will be awarded for June, July and August; the second will be awarded for September, October and November. Rob encouraged members to be aware of people on Harleys, explain to them what H.O.G. is, invite them to a meeting, and point them to our website. Ken Musil is not included since he is the membership officer. Rob brought up rumors and how damaging they can be to our Chapter. If you hear a rumor, get a hold of a Board member and let him/her know so it can be addressed and clarified in our new “Rumor or Fact” area in the HOG Herald. The item will be discussed at the Board meeting and passed along to Kate to put in the newsletter. Case in point: Terry Wiedeman was NOT paid to auctioneer at CDD this year. We are presenting Don Elam with a laser wall hanging to thank him for all his 14 years of service as auctioneer. UPCOMING EVENTS: See list on page 1. There were 72 members signed in at this meeting. Rob conducted the Director’s Drawing, and the winners were as follows: Larry Holder, Richard Wolfe , and Ken Sauer. The meeting was adjourned at 10:05AM.
