Meet the Artists American Songbook I Meet the Artists Magos & Limón A palpable symbiosis occurs when Magos & Limón, made up of Mexican jazz singer Magos Herrera and flamenco guitarist Javier Limón, take the stage together: her smoky vocals envelop the intense spirit of his guitar to produce a melodic sophistication that is altogether unique. Known for her beguiling rhythmic scatting and captivating vocals, Ms. Herrera is considered one of the most beautiful voices in contemporary Latin American jazz. Fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, and English, her repertoire is filled with intimacy and enchantment. She has appeared at venues around the world, including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Millennium Park in Chicago, Teatro de la Ciudad in Mexico, and Sala Galileo Galilei in Madrid, and at international jazz festivals in Barcelona and Montreal. Her album Distancia (2009) earned a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. The critically acclaimed México Azul followed in 2011. Ms. Herrera has produced and hosted two television shows to promote artists in Mexican contemporary music and hosts her own radio show focusing on artists from today’s jazz scene. Mr. Limón, a seven-time Latin Grammy Award winner, has earned a reputation as one of the most sought-after musicians in Spain. A guitarist, composer, and producer, he has worked on albums by such artists as Paco de Lucía, Bebo Valdés, Diego el Cigala, Enrique Morente, Wynton Marsalis, and Concha Buika. In 2009 he won a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album for Juntos para Siempre, a collaboration with Valdés. He also co-produced Lágrimas Negras by Valdés and El Cigala, which earned the Latin Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Album and was nominated for Album of the Year. In addition to touring and recording, Mr. Limón currently serves as the artistic director of the Berklee College of Music’s Mediterranean Music Institute, which operates in Valencia, Spain, and Boston, Massachusetts.
