April 2014 - Tennis Club
April 2014 The Player A Wembley Downs Tennis Club Inc. From the President The former Pennant, now Summer League season is well over and two out of the three midweek ladies’ teams won their divisions. Great job ladies, well done! Some of our Junior teams also were winners and definitely grinners – more information follows. The Club Championships were played this weekend. Two very exciting finals matches were played at the same time on Saturday: the men’s singles between Elliott Buzza and Mike Underwood was an exciting match and although Mike was victorious, Elliott played an amazing match, showing incredible talent on the court! Well done to both of you! The other match was the mixed doubles final between Taryn Sullivan and Stuart Miller, the defending champions, against Brenton Bacon and Lorraine Sims. It was a very tough match, but at the end of the day Lorraine came home with the Bacon! (Thanks for that one Jeremy!) Coming up on Saturday 24 May we have our 2014 Annual Dinner and Presentation Night. This year the theme is The Oscars. As usual it will be a great night, so make sure to get a ticket and organise a table as soon as possible. Details are on the flyer in this newsletter and booking sheets are on the Club noticeboard. I would like to wish everyone a happy Easter, and if you are going away for the weekend, please drive carefully, and I will see you at the Club soon. Thanks to Rae Savage, Lorraine Sims, Susanna Monaco and Martina Van Rensburg for organising, setting up and cleaning up. Winter League There are five league teams for the winter competition: four Saturday teams and one Midweek team. This is a ten week season which commences in May. Members A big welcome to the following new members. We look forward to seeing you on court and around the Club! Full: Midweek: Junior: Andrew Thompson Susan Alderton Patrick Thompson, Luca Katsamakis, Marcus Bouckaert, Brendan Davies Tea for 22 These two smiling faces are a familiar and friendly sight to players on a Saturday afternoon, serving tea to the masses. Thanks to ‘tea laddies’ Alan Hill and Ron Gepp for their cheerful and welcome ‘cuppas’ each week! We have been asked to remind all kitchen users please, that when you put the dishwasher on, the powder compartment needs to be closed securely so the powder disperses and dishes are washed properly. Thank you everyone! Bill Leuba was recently missing in action from the Club. On making enquiries, we were told that he had had a minor operation and was overnight in hospital. Happily Bill recovered well. Apparently the doctor advised him not to drink tea or coffee for a few weeks. “Not a problem!” replied Bill. Social Midweek On Thursday 20 March the Midweek ladies celebrated World Happiness Day, which was an innovative idea from Wendy Hawkes. Everyone dressed in their favourite bright colours, with Val Severn winning the prize for the best outfit. Some members also brought along memorabilia which made them happy. It was a delightful, happy morning which concluded with morning tea. Coaches / Juniors Junior Club Championships The Junior Club Championships have now concluded. JOE’S COACHING TIP Target time on the serve A great tennis serve tip is what I call target practice. The tennis serve must be constantly practised and refined to maintain the precision and power. Tennis serve tips only benefit a tennis player if it is properly integrated in practice sessions. A rifleman would not expect to have perfect aim without engaging in target practice on the field. The same is true for the tennis serve. Put out cones in the service box and practice hitting specific targets on the court. This will pay dividends when it comes time to perform the tennis serve under pressure and you can place the tennis serve into the location of your choice.
