Where in the world was TechnoGranny last week-end? Along with
NannoGranny, JoAnn Forrester she was in Dayton, Ohio for the
Annual Military Writer’s Society of America Annual National
Conference. We got to hobnob with some of America’s finest. The
past two years this conference was in Pittsburgh and we met so
many fine military personnel or retired personnel and also authors
who wrote about military topics we just could not stay away. In
addition to speaking on three different topics to the conference we
got to hobnob with bronze, silver and gold medalists and Founder’s
Award Winners. We even shared a panel with Best Selling Author,

evening…………DWIGHT JON ZIMMERMAN is a bestselling and
award-winning author, radio host, producer, president of the

of the Number 1 New York Times bestselling young adult book,
Lincoln’s Last Days, an adaptation of Bill O’Reilly’s New York Times

John. Over the weekend the Holleys were the recipients of the 2012
Founders Award given out by the Military Writers Society of
America. ……….. On November 15, 2005, John and Stacey Holley
unwillingly became Gold Star Parents. Their son and only child, U.S.
Army Specialist Matthew Holley, was killed along with three other
Soldiers when an IED exploded under their Humvee while on patrol
in Iraq. The book tells their storyof the battle to get better
recognition in the way war heros come home………NannoGranny,
JoAnn Forrester and TechnoGranny will also let you in on some of
the hi-lights of the conference from a Pittsburghers point of view
including the fact that some other Pittsburghers travelled to Dayton
for this conference both as presenters, award nominees and
attendees.

it also provides you with a layer of protection………..So what

Audience Says, “Ouch” as STREB Performs Very Physical Dance
Giant steel beam seesaw by
Helene Vidovich and Martin Thomas
We go to the theater to be transported from our seats into the
imagination of the artists.
Dance in the age of digital media is different than that of Martha

Graham or the NYC Ballet. The use of video feeds and files,
computers and projectors changes the focus. I didn’t know whether
to look at what the projector was displaying, what the dancers were
doing or at their silhouettes on the back screen.
Elizabeth Mitchell
Streb Choreographer Streb, aka known as the Evil Knieval of dance,
is a bang-up exhibition of acrobatic tumbles, jumps and flat-out
face-down, or face-up, slams onto a mat. Streb with her cast from
the tough streets of Brooklyn, tries to exploit “extreme action.” They
called their pieces “action events.” I kept saying, “ow, that had to
hurt!” Some examples: Doing the “Limbo” with a spinning I beam
suspended from a chain — jumping from 10 feet, 20 feet, even 30
feet face down onto the mats — hanging bound, while upside down,
from a rope panicking — “flying” by use of a giant steel-beam
see-saw on a turntable — writhing in an open ended box suspended
from the ceiling. The sets: raw metal, chains, brick, mats and the workout wardrobe,
were matched with industrial sounds of a loud bass rumble. There
was also a turntable within a turntable made up of mats on the floor,
that were used with camera feeds projected with great effect. Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 24
http://pplmag.com
Another event had a large diagonal mat where the cast log-rolled
with, and over each other. These action events, brought to mind
childhood times and playground fun. Some of their pieces were more traditional modern dance-like and
very gratifying. One had a backdrop of a spinning planet while the
dancers appeared to fly over it suspended in harnesses. Another, my
favorite, “Anti-gravity,” had the dancers flat on the floor with an
overhead camera feed projecting their images onto the backdrop,
making them appear weightless on a distant planet. This “action
event” had the audience in awe, like children watching fire works. All in all, Streb did transport us from our seats into their
imaginations. But, ouch! some of those falls had to hurt.

Matthew Morrison Sings at Marvin Hamlisch’s Wake
Tamar Cerafici
Pittsburgh Pops! Heinz Hall
September 30, 2012
It might seem the height of folly to review a concert at its last
performance. But the Pittsburgh Pops concert series shows so much
promise that it’s inevitable I should urge everyone to leave this site
and become a subscriber. Go. NOW.
This was a remarkable opening to a fun season that includes a 50th
anniversary tribute to the Beatles and the ever-popular Holiday
Pops.
Marvin Hamlisch was supposed to conduct this concert. He had
planned the entire season before he died in August. In his stead,
Lucas Richman proved an admirable and capable substitute. The
concert began with memories of Mr. Hamlisch and his relationship
with the Pittsburgh Pops program. I wasn’t aware of the great
impact that Marvin Hamlisch had on the cultural lives of
Pittsburghers. (Remember I’m new to this venue.)
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 26
http://pplmag.com
But when Lucas Richman sat down at the piano, lovingly placed in
the “Marvin position” to conduct a soaring “The Way We Were,” I
knew I was in for a special evening of tribute. This concert is the
beginning of a long goodbye to Marvin Hamlisch. The PSO is going
forward with the pops concert as Marvin planned with the stars he
wanted, the arrangements he needed, and the orchestra members
and audience that he loved so much.
Marvin Hamlisch conducting
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_Hamlisch
I was surrounded by concertgoers who did have fond memories of
Mr. Hamlisch at the podium. They described an engaging and utterly
unpretentious entertainer and friend. When I told them I was writing
a review for this magazine, all around me started to regale me with
tales of Mr. Hamlisch and his contributions to the concerts.
One recounted Marvin’s habit of updating Steelers games from the
conductor’s podium during Sunday afternoon programs.
Another told me about the original Hanukkah material Marvin
created especially for the annual Holiday Pops programs.
Marvin would see a regular concertgoer in her traditional seat and
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 27
http://pplmag.com
stop the concert to say hello; he would make sure that the folks in
the gallery were having as much fun as the patrons in the dress
circle.
Their Marvin was not some Broadway Big shot who’d won an Emmy,
a Tony, an Oscar, a Grammy and a Pulitzer Prize (the only one
besides Richard Rogers). Their Marvin was someone who loves
music, loves the theater, loves telling stories, and above all loves
leaving people happier when they left the concert hall than when
they came in.
(I have to add here that this is the coolest thing about living in
Pittsburgh that is different from the four other places I’ve lived since
2009. People will talk to you. They will share themselves with you.
They want you to know their story. I totally love that.)
But enough about Marvin and Pittsburghers; I was there to hear one
of the orchestras that provided the soundtrack to my youth in the
Intermountain West.
Matthew Morrison
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 28
http://pplmag.com
The first half of the concert was a tribute to Marvin’s life and love of
music. The overture to Funny Girl was on the program because
Marvin would procure chocolate donuts for Barbra Streisand during
rehearsals. Lucas Richman’s own composition, Romancing the
Cinema, highlighted love songs from the great movies that Marvin
loved. (A note to Richman: rather too many references to Titanic
thank you very much, but I loved your arrangement of As Time Goes
By.) And, since we are celebrating one of the great lights of modern
American theater, why not throw in a little West Side Story? The
PSO’s animated “Mambo” could have been a trite throwaway, but
they performed it with passion and verve.
Oh wait! The guy from Glee! Mr. Shuester! That’s why we’re all
here! That explains the bevy of teenagers and college students and
the school buses lined up along Sixth Street.
Yes, Matthew Morrison was supposed to be the main attraction this
afternoon. And he delivered. His program was part autobiography,
part song and dance, and part motivational speech. Between
standbys like “It Don’t Mean A Thing If You Ain’t Got That Swing,”
“Luck Be a Lady,” and “The Lady Is A Tramp,” we learned about
Morrison’s introduction to musical theater. He described his own
Glee Club experiences at the Orange County High School for the
Arts with pretty decent riffs on some Duke Ellington pieces. He
highlighted his rise to fame on Broadway with medleys from “South
Pacific” “West Side Story” and “A Little Night Music” (of course it
was “Send in the Clowns”). His choice to join the cast of Glee was
difficult because really all he wanted to do was be a song and dance
man like Sammy Davis Jr. Then he went on to prove that he would’ve
been a very good song and dance man instead of a washed-up
Spanish teacher in Lima, OH. Very few of us will forget his
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 29
http://pplmag.com
moonwalk during “Ease On Down The Road.”
The great strength of his program, though, was his willingness to
attribute his success to choices that other people made. While I liked
Morrison’s lyrical tenor voice immensely, it was fun to watch him
throw a little bit of Mr. Shuester into the mix. He told of a teacher
who said “you have three Life Days where you realize that you have
a chance to do the one thing that changes your life forever.” He
reminded all of us that the world is full of choices, but when you do
what you love and live your passion you realize that there never
really was a choice to make. Tamar Cerafici is an environmental lawyer whose national practice

to the Benedum stage to begin the 2012-13 opera season of classics.
The tragic tale of the court jester bent on revenge features
Pittsburgh favorite Mark Delavan (Falstaff, 2009; Tosca, 2012) in the
title role, with Lyubov Petrova (Ariadne auf Naxos, 2006) as Gilda
and Michael Wade Lee in his Pittsburgh Opera debut as the Duke of
Mantua. Rigoletto’s dramatic twists and turns and its well-known
tunes such as “La donna è mobile,” “Si, vendetta” and “Questa o
quella” make this opera a perpetual favorite. It’s said that
immediately after Rigoletto’s premiere in 1851, “La donna è mobile”
was sung and whistled in the streets, making it an instant classic.

Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership—love it when an organization
toots their own horn, didn’t know these things about Pittsburgh
partnership, did you?
I know you are used to seeing all the cool, hip events going on
Downtown in your mailbox every Monday morning. But I suspect
there is a lot more about the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership that
you may not know. Like last year, we removed 1.1 million pounds of
trash and 4,677 graffiti tags. And we installed 150 cigarette
urns. We’ve worked to attract and retain new businesses,
encouraged innovative, exciting start-ups through the
award-winning Project Pop Up: Downtown initiatives and promoted
the burgeoning residential real estate market in Downtown. We’ve
continued to advocate for solutions on the region’s complex
transportation issues through keeppghmoving.com. We’ve also

encouraged biking and walking throughout the city. And we’ve
brought you a series of fantastic events culminating in Light Up

Roving Pittsburgher Report
Streb Review
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 43
http://pplmag.com
Helene Vidovich, Freelance Cultural Reporter
Martin Thomas, Videographer ~ Troubadour
We go to the theater to be transported from our seats into the
imagination of the artists. Dance in the age of digital media is different than that of Martha
Graham or the NYC Ballet. The use of video feeds and files,
computers and projectors changes the focus. I didn’t know whether
to look at what the projector was displaying, what the dancers were
doing or at their silhouettes on the back screen.
Streb, aka known as the Evil Knieval of dance, is a bang-up
exhibition of acrobatic tumbles, jumps and flat-out face-down, or
face-up, slams onto a mat. Streb with her cast from the tough streets
of Brooklyn, tries to exploit “extreme action.” They called their
pieces “action events.” I kept saying, “ow, that had to hurt!” Some
examples: Doing the “Limbo” with a spinning I beam suspended
from a chain — jumping from 10 feet, 20 feet, even 30 feet face
down onto the mats — hanging bound, while upside down, from a
rope panicking — “flying” by use of a giant steel-beam see-saw on a
turntable — writhing in an open ended box suspended from the
ceiling. The sets: raw metal, chains, brick, mats and the workout wardrobe,
were matched with industrial sounds of a loud bass rumble. There
was also a turntable within a turntable made up of mats on the floor,
that were used with camera feeds projected with great effect. Another event had a large diagonal mat where the cast log-rolled
with, and over each other. These action events, brought to mind
childhood times and playground fun. Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 44
http://pplmag.com
Some of their pieces were more traditional modern dance-like and
very gratifying. One had a backdrop of a spinning planet while the
dancers appeared to fly over it suspended in harnesses. Another, my
favorite, “Anti-gravity,” had the dancers flat on the floor with an
overhead camera feed projecting their images onto the backdrop,
making them appear weightless on a distant planet. This “action
event” had the audience in awe, like children watching fire works. All in all, Streb did transport us from our seats into their
imaginations. But, ouch! some of those falls had to hurt.

TechoGranny visits Military Writer’s Conference
10-1-12
Listen to the show here.
Where in the world was TechnoGranny last weekend? Along with
NannoGranny, JoAnn Forrester, she was in Dayton, Ohio for the
Annual Military Writer’s Society of America’s Annual National
Conference. Tonight, we will also let you in on some of the highlights
of the conference from a Pittsburghers point of view, including the
fact that some other Pittsburghers traveled to Dayton for this
conference both as presenters, award nominees and attendees. We
even shared a panel with Best Selling Author, Dwight Zimmerman
who will be a guest this evening, along with Stacey and John Holley,
recipients of the 2012 Founders Award given out by the Military
Writers Society of America.
Guests:
Stacey Holley, author

Stacey and John Holley
Stacey Holley co-authored the book Medals, Flags and Memories
with her husband John. Over the weekend the Holley’s were the
recipients of the 2012 Founders Award given out by the Military
Writers Society of America. On November 15, 2005, John and Stacey Holley unwillingly became
Gold Star Parents. Their son and only child, U.S. Army Specialist
Matthew Holley, was killed along with three other soldiers when an
IED exploded under their Humvee while on patrol in Iraq.
Racked with grief over their son’s death, John and Stacey’s sorrow
turned to outrage when they learned that Matthew’s casket would
return to San Diego’s Lindbergh Field as common freight. There
would be no honor guard to welcome this fallen hero back to the
nation of his birth. Instead, Matthew Holley’s remains would be
transferred by forklifts and baggage handlers, like a crate of auto
parts.
Determined to welcome their son home with honors befitting his
sacrifice, the Holley’s embarked on a quest to challenge the law, and
to begin a journey of healing that would touch the lives of Gold Star
Families across our nation.

Page 48

Medals, Flags and Memories is a three part story of John and
Stacey’s journey of healing. They share about the choice their son
Matthew made “To serve a cause greater than himself” - John’s
journey to Iraq, stepping foot in the worn torn country nearly one
year to the day after being notified of Matthew’s death and the faith
to carry on their son’s legacy as a husband and wife and to continue
touching the lives of others. Gold Star family represents family members who died or were killed
while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This is signified on
a service flag with a small gold star placed on top of a blue star.
The Holley Provision, known to some as Angel Flights, was passed
into law as part of the 2007 Defense Appropriations Bill. President
George W. Bush signed legislation into law in October 2007 and the
Pentagon enacted the Provision in January 2007. It ensures
consistency across all branches of service by providing an
honorable, dignified and respectful transfer of our Fallen Heroes
from Dover Air Force base to their home of record. Since it’s
enactment the Holley Provision has touched over five thousand
families across America.

WHY The Dignity & Respect Council of Greater Pittsburgh will
gather in front of the city’s policy leaders to recognize Pittsburgh’s
11 Dignity & Respect Champions of 2012. The Champions were
chosen monthly throughout the year based on a formal nomination
process.
Champions were selected based on their support of the values of
dignity and respect and their application of those values in the
workplace and in their communities. Champions will receive honors
for their commitment to accepting and including others. The annual
breakfast will kick-off Dignity & Respect Month, which is celebrated
in counties across the Commonwealth and in many states
nationwide.
The Dignity & Respect Campaign of Greater Pittsburgh began as an
initiative by the Center for Inclusion at UPMC in 2008. Trying to
encourage inclusion through organizational and behavioral change,
the employees took a pledge and suggested actions that promote
dignity and respect in the workplace. From this, the “30 Tips of
Dignity and Respect” were created to inspire change through
everyday behaviors. Within four years, the campaign expanded
nationally.

“After creating new routines for STOMP OUT LOUD in Vegas,
[co-creator] Luke Cresswell and I decided it was time to rework
elements of our main production, STOMP,” said co-creator Steve
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 82
http://pplmag.com
McNicholas. “STOMP has evolved a great deal ever since its first
incarnation at the Edinburgh Festival. Every reworking has involved
losing some pieces and gaining new ones, but has always stayed true
to the original premise of the show: to create rhythmic music with
instantly recognizable objects, and do it with an eccentric sense of
character and humor.”
The changes that can now be seen in the tour of STOMP are the
biggest since the late 1990’s. A new piece “Paint Cans” evolved out
of the “Boxes” routine in the Las Vegas show and “Donuts” is a piece
that implements huge tractor tire inner tubes, worn around the
waist on a bungee cord. For many years, the creators had looked for
a STOMP equivalent of the Latin percussion instrument the guiro, a
gourd-shaped open-ended instrument with ridges along the side that
are rubbed by a wooden stick to create its sound. The climactic
trashcan sequence “Bins” has been restructured to include a
guiro-like new found instrument: strip-lighting recycling containers.
From its beginnings as a street performance in the UK, STOMP has
grown into an international sensation over the past fourteen years,
having performed in over 350 cities in 36 countries worldwide.
STOMP continues its phenomenal run with the ongoing sell-out
Off-Broadway production at New York’s Orpheum Theatre, a North
American tour, and two productions overseas - a London company
and a European tour.
STOMP, an overwhelming success marked by rave reviews,
numerous awards and sell-out engagements, is the winner of an
Olivier Award for Best Choreography (London’s Tony Award), a New
YorkObie Award, a Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatre
Experience, and a Special Citation from Best Plays. The young
Positively Pittsburgh Live

performers “make a rhythm out of anything we can get our hands on
that makes a sound,” says co-creator/director Luke Cresswell.
Stiff-bristle brooms become a sweeping orchestra; Zippo lighters flip
open and closed to create a fiery fugue; wooden poles thump and
clack in a rhythmic explosion. STOMP uses everything but
conventional percussion instruments – trashcans, tea chests, plastic
bags, plungers, boots, and hubcaps – to fill the stage with compelling
and infectious rhythms.
Critics and audiences have raved: “STOMP is as crisp and exuberant
as if it had opened yesterday,” says The New York Times. The San
Francisco Chronicle declares “STOMP has a beat that just won’t
quit!” The Los Angeles Times exclaims: “Electrifying! Triumphs in
the infinite variety of the human experience.” “A phenomenal show!
Bashing, crashing, smashing, swishing, banging and kicking – a
joyous invention!” says the Chicago Tribune.
STOMP is directed and created by Luke Cresswell and Steve
McNicholas. www.stomponline.com.

Love labelmate Andy Stott. Stott’s sludgy, dramatic productions
have been described by Pitchfork as sounding “like hellish vultures
picking over the carcass of dance music.” Joining the bill is Three
Legged Race, alias Robert Beatty, longtime member of Lexington KY
noise champions Hair Police and Nate Young of Wolf Eyes,
Paris/Nancy-based LAFIDKI, and Drainolith (Spectrum Spools,
Montreal). Pittsburgh filmmaker Ben Hernstrom (Ambulantic

The last night of VIA gives legends and newcomers equal billing;
beginning with PA-based Daughn Gibson, who sings lonely trucker’s
tales with 21st century production savvy. LIke Burial meeting up
with Lee Hazelwood, Gibson starts the night with his miniature,
narrative epics. Brooklyn’s Gatekeeper ups the tempo with their
smoky EBM, who create an immersive, multimedia experience with
their latest
EP Exo - presented alongside a custom virtual gaming environment.
Moombahton duo Nadastrom
steadily increase heart rates until the Detroit legend, Kenny Dixon
Junior aka Moodymann, takes the stage. The producer has
successfully transported his world of 8-mile roller rinks to the world
stage. Making dusty soul samples into undeniable house loops, KDJ
doesn’t make tracks, he makes classics.
