Dear Members
We draw the curtains on yet another successful year at Club de Goa.
This year being significant indeed, as we set out to celebrate 25 years
of Club de Goa’s existence.
Right from the start, your committee took this year head on, with a
sense of purpose as they passionately and painstakingly organized
numerous brilliant and exciting events throughout the year to celebrate
this milestone. Amongst these were some events unveiled for the very
first time, which you members supported and enjoyed thoroughly, as
was evident from the overwhelming participation.
Throughout this year, we witnessed several new and younger
members and families join our club and actively participate in events.
It is indeed heartening to note the new generation embrace the values
of Club de Goa which reflects the positive image we portray.
As we move into the next Club year, it is now that time again for all
you members to come together and elect the 2015-16 Team Club de
Goa, to whom your current team can proudly hand over the baton to. I
invite each and every one of you to participate in the AGM and
facilitate the formation of another brilliant committee. Please
remember to save the date in your calendar - Sunday 26th July,
12.30 pm at the Warrigal Road State School. Lunch will be on us.
Last but not the least, I thank each and every member of this
committee personally, and on behalf of all the members of Club de
Goa. For ALL your efforts throughout the year, be it, behind the
scenes, before, during or after events, your time and commitment is
much appreciated.
Viva Goa

Jam Session / Karaoke Night – April 2015 (by Maggie Soares)
Oh what a night! Scrumptious food, foot tapping music, melodious voices and the fun that
made the evening a success. There was a good turnout of not only members but nonmembers as well. The food stalls had their business booming with last minute orders and
takeaways. The enthusiasm and talent within our community was amazing. Thanks to
Joaquim for painstakingly carting all the equipment and handling the Karaoke side of the
evening. Also thanks to Toto and other members who assisted with the clean-up.
Pub Night – May 2015 (by Brenda Monteiro)
From left to right: Natasha D’Souza, Regan Vaz, Paul (visitor), John-Paul, Brenda Monteiro, Denis Monteiro,
Myron Monteiro, Dwayne Monteiro, Nisha Vasudevan, Lareina Fernandes and Allwyn Carvalho
Ten club members and a French visitor had dinner and drinks at the Breakfast Creek Hotel
on 2 May 2015.
Fortunately the rain event of 1 May which brought about localised flooding and rain
damage to Brisbane’s northern suburbs, had cleared off completely and allowed for the
club’s Pub Nite event to go ahead.
Denis and I were the two mature-aged adults and the other nine were 20-somethings. So
I decided to be numerically dyslexic and mentally switched our ages to 25 and 35 (we are
in fact 52 and 53 years respectively) and we fitted in so well.
As we all know the food at Brekky Creek does not fail to impress. All of us enjoyed our
steaks or beef-n-reef combinations. Paul, the Frenchman, is vegetarian and he spent the
evening nibbling the salads. Who would have thought that people from Paris do not eat
meat of any sort? Anyway he told us that he enjoyed the beer and the company.
After dinner, Regan coaxed us into going to ‘Milany’ for dessert. Being respectful and
noting that he was a committee member, we all agreed. Milany has exceptional gelato
and sorbets, dishing up both traditional flavours and some extraordinary exotic ones like
watermelon. Their tea and coffee was wonderful too. The large-sized Brekky Creek meals
did not stop us all from having at least 3 scoops each of gelato. I think Regan took us to
Milany as he was secretly hoping that Tatiana Grigoreiva would be there. She owns this
cafe and is often seen there.
The highlight of the evening for me was spending the evening with three of our very new
members – Lareina, Natasha and John-Paul and listening to their perspective as ‘new
migrants’ and getting their take on living in Australia. Strangely and reassuringly, 23 years
ago I had the very same views as a new migrant.
It is wonderful that Club de Goa has many new members, young adults, to keep the club’s
wheels turning. Our family looks forward to the next Pub Nite.

May Ball – May 2015 (by Maggie Soares)
The May Ball was the first that Club de Goa had organised and I really enjoyed preparing
for it and especially working on the cloaks with Club de Goa emblems embroidered for each
of the contestants. As this is our 25th Anniversary, the Committee decided to provide
members with a free night. DJ Lennie's excellent music got everybody, young and old
onto the floor with non-stop dancing. We also had an amazing participation of contestants
for the titles of Club de Goa King, Queen, Prince and Princess. Our panel of judges had a
tough time making a final decision. The winners were – Saiba Prasad (CDG King), Pallavi
Sekhon (CDG Queen), Ryan Noronha (CDG Prince) and Erica Pinto (CDG Princess). Thanks
to Tony, Joaquim, Toto, Shirley and their families who came 2 hours prior to the start of the
function to assist with setting up and also cleaning up afterwards. Also thanks to Fay, Pearl,
Shirley and Fatima who assisted with the raffle tickets. Joaquim once again did an excellent
job as an MC. Special thanks to Tony Mendes for yet again joining me to provide donations
of several gifts for our prizes on the day.
Camp Duckadang – June 2015 (by Maggie Soares)
We had a great camp this year with a wonderful mix of young and old. In total we had 57
people including 5 kids. To ensure that everybody would have a good time, I had packed
almost 10 cartons with prizes, gifts, etc. and had to request Reagan to assist with
transporting some of them to Duckadang. Also included in these boxes were dress up items
for the Hippie Night (i.e. wigs, jewellery, scarves, etc.) in case someone forgot to bring
theirs.
On Friday people arrived in dribs and drabs but everyone got there okay. Savio who was
holidaying in Goa arrived on Saturday morning and drove straight to Duckadang with a
container of bebinca for all of us. The meals were fantastic and there was plenty for
seconds. Thanks to Toto who organised a special deal with Ian. He also drew up rosters
for serving and washing up and it all went like clockwork.
On Saturday after breakfast, members and guests enjoyed games of volleyball/netball,
cricket, etc. Others went on long bush walks. Some members and guests also availed
themselves of the opportunity to enjoy kayaking and canoeing. Later, we moved into the
hall and played the icebreaker game when everyone present was given half a page of a
magazine and had to find the person with the other half. I decided to give the prize to the
25th couple but we ran one short, so my next selection was the 15th couple denoting the
year 2015. Then we all sat around and each one got a chance to explain who they were
and also their association with the Club. Everyone who attended the Camp was given a
Club de Goa cap, compliments of the Committee. The highlight of the Camp, however, was
the acceptance by Fr. Nigel Sequeira to visit and celebrate mass for us on Saturday
afternoon. Fr. Nigel was born in Dar-e-Salaam and his ancestors hail from Mangalore. Our
sincere thanks to Tim for arranging his visit. After dinner that evening we had our Hippie
Night and everybody took the trouble to dress up and enjoy themselves. It was really a fun
evening and everyone young and old got up and danced and sang through the night. We
did a lot of fun things like the Macarena, Nutbush, Limbo Rock and Tunnel Parade/March.
If I am not mistaken, I think Nisha and Allwyn won the Limbo. The venue also had a huge
screen and Louis brought his equipment along so we could enjoy Karaoke as well. I had
carried a bottle of home brewed feni and Fay went around and gave everybody a capful,
with no exception.
On Sunday, Joaquim brought his guitar out and we had a sing-a-long. In the afternoon we
played a lot of trivia games, housie, funky whist-drive (a la Toto) etc. Of course, as and
when the Card Sharps got a chance, they disappeared. After dinner, we all moved
downstairs and lit a bonfire, sat around singing with Joaquim and John Paul playing for us
throughout the evening until almost 1.00 am.
All good things must come to an end and we had had such a great time that most of us
were very sorry to leave.
Just to let you know that Denis and I had an enjoyable time at last night’s May Ball, please
pass on our compliments to the Committee – Brenda Monteiro
Thank you for a great night on Saturday - I couldn't help but notice all the smiling faces in
the background when looking at the photos. A big congrats to the committee for thinking
up a new event, it's obvious that a lot of hard work has gone in (i.e. finding a DJ, a venue,
sourcing raffle prizes, decorations, costumes etc). Thanks for keeping it fresh, as it can be
easy to lose your mojo as the term concludes. Good to see everyone – Vanessa Mendes
Just would like to say thanks to the Committee for initiating a dance at the start of winter,
it was a warm, friendly atmosphere filled with fun & lots of dancing, I enjoyed myself till the
last dance – Annabel Valadares
The May Ball 2015 was an enjoyable evening with lovely company, fantastic venue, and foot
stomping music. Joaquim the compere for the evening did a great job. Thank you to all in
the CDG committee for all your efforts in 2014/15. Viva Goa! - Mel & Yvonne
We had a great time at the May Ball! Another event done really well by the group – Ryan
Rego
Congratulations to all the organisers of the May Ball; it was one of the best attended dances
and well organised, thanks for your hard work
- Viola De Barros
Hi Fay, Joachim, Toto, Maggie, and all you wonderful guys who gave us one of the best
camps I have ever enjoyed. You have a great, hard-working, selfless and generous
committee, Fay, and my thanks are beyond measure. God bless – Ivy Monteiro
I had a wonderful time with you all. Thanks so much to the committee for organising another
fun and successful camp – Suzanne Pereira
Thanks very much for organising this camp – it was really nice and the food was excellent
