WOF is width of fabric from selvage to selvage, approximately 42". Only 12 fabrics are used for the bargello strips. Refer to the fabric chart for the number assigned to each of these fabrics.
Cutting Bargello Strips Fabrics 1–4 and 6–12 (refer to fabric chart for number assigned to each fabric): • Cut 2 strips 5 1/2" x WOF from each fabric Fabric 5 (Nutcracker Stripe): • Cut 2 strips 5 1/2" along the length of the fabric, centering the nutcracker section of the stripe in each strip Cutting Borders & Binding Blue Stars, 120-­‐7521: • Cut 6 strips 2 1/4" x WOF for inner border • Cut 8 strips 2 1/2" x WOF for binding Blue Candy, 120-­‐7541: • Cut 1 strip 8" x WOF; recut into (4) 8" squares for outer border corner squares Nutcracker Medallions, 120-­‐7501: • Cut 2 strips 8" x WOF, centering a row of medallions in each strip for top and bottom borders • Cut 2 strips 8" along the remaining length of the fabric, centering a row of medallions in each strip for side borders • Cut 2 strips 8" x remaining width of the fabric (approximately 20"), centering a row of medallions in each strip to match the 2 strips already cut for the top and bottom borders Piecing the Quilt Center Note: It is very helpful to make a swatch sample of the fabrics used in the bargello. After stitching the first strip set, square 1 edge and keep the trimmed-­‐off scrap strip to use as a reference for the original sewing order. Fabric 1 (the green candy) will be the left end of the strip and Fabric 12 (the red stars) will be the right end. The bargello strip sets will be cut into the long VERTICAL rows of the quilt center. Piecing Tips -­‐ Sew your strip sets in pairs in 1 direction and then sew the pairs together in the opposite direction (see drawing on the next page). This will prevent distortion of the seams to keep your sets nice and flat. Using a walking foot for your piecing is also a great help in keeping seams flat. 10. Continue to remove the stitching between 2 pieces in every row to make rows 3–12 referring to the drawing below. The stitching will always be removed between the fabric shown at the top of a row and the fabric shown at the bottom of that row. Row 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 11. Pin the rows together in pairs in the order shown in the drawing above, butting the seams. Stitch the pinned pairs together. Press seams to 1 side. Pin the pairs together and stitch in the opposite direction in the same manner as used for the strip sets. Press all seams to 1 side to complete the 52 1/2" x 60 1/2" quilt center. 5 Completing Your Quilt Note: Measure your pieced section through the center from side to side and from top to bottom. If your measurement is different from the size given for the quilt center, adjust your border lengths to fit your quilt center throughout the following steps. Press all border seams toward the border strips. Refer to the quilt on the cover of this pattern to add the borders. 1. Stitch the 2 1/4" blue stars strips together to make a long strip. Cut into (2) 60 1/2" strips and (2) 56" strips. Sew the longer strips to the long sides of the quilt center and the shorter strips to the top and bottom. 2. Trim the 8" lengthwise nutcracker medallion border strips to 64". Stitch to the long sides of the quilt center. 3. Sew an 8" x approximately 20" border strip to the matching 8" x WOF strip, matching the print from strip to strip. Trim to 56". Stitch an 8" blue candy square to each end of the strip. Press seams toward the strip. Sew the pieced strip to the top of the quilt center. 4.

Top/Bottom Border — Make 2 Repeat step 4 to make the bottom border strip and stitch to the bottom of the quilt center to complete the top. Cut (2) 86" lengths of backing fabric. Remove selvage edges and join on a long edge with a 1/2" seam allowance. Press seam open. Trim the side edges to make the 78" x 86" backing piece. Layer the quilt top and backing with a 78" x 86" piece of batting. Quilt as desired—try outlining or shadowing blocks or an allover meander. My video “Free Motion Quilting for Newbies” may be a help! (www.quiltshopofdeland.com) Trim batting and backing even with the quilt top. Bind using your favorite method and the blue stars binding strips to complete your quilt. 6
