Connections for a safer, stronger community 2014 annual report July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014 508 E Church Street, Champaign, IL 61820 • (217) 352-7151 508 E Church Street, Champaign, IL 61820 • (217) 352-7151 2 Mission: To provide a continuum of services so that individuals and families can acheive safety, stability, and self-sufficiency. From our Executive Director Dear Friends, Clients, Staff, Volunteers and Partners, Thank you. Thank you for helping an abused woman address the pain she has endured and plan for a safe future for herself and her daughter. BOARD OF DIRECTORS Michael Lewellen President Assistant Director for Human Resources University of Illinois Dining Services Lynn Barnett Morris Vice-President Associate Professor University of Illinois Department of Recreation Sport, & Tourism Brice Hutchcraft Treasurer Commercial Relationships Manager Midland States Bank Fran Hacker Secretary Retired, University of Illinois Jennifer Hall Maia Roman Spa Carmen Davis Kirby Vice-President T. Davis Electric, Inc. Gia Lewis-Smallwood USA Track and Field; NIKE Michael Ujcich Store Manager Bergner’s Domestic Violence Hotline: (217) 384-4390 or (877) 384-4390. Business line: (217) 352-7151 508 E Church St., Champaign, IL 61820 Thank you for believing in second chances and helping a woman who served prison time start over with sobriety and hard work. Thank you for understanding that it takes time, resources, and support to get a family back on their feet and into stable housing. Thank you for having courage. Because whether you’ve supported our mission since the founding of the nation’s first battered women’s shelter in Urbana, IL, or got to know us just last year through our resale store – you are sharing the courage people need to change their lives for the better. 2014 was a busy year for us, and in June we introduced our new name: Courage Connection. I’d like to highlight what that change represents. In 1971 A Woman’s Place domestic violence shelter opened, and in 1985 the Women’s Emergency Shelter (later The Center for Women in Transition) opened its doors to homeless women in Champaign-Urbana. In 2010 these two missions merged to create a single organization offering connected shelter and services for women and families in crisis. Since 2008, we have also operated a local resale store that provides opportunities for job training, low cost clothing and household goods, and revenue to help support other agency programs. We added affordable permanent housing options for program graduates and others in our community in 2011. In 43 years we have grown to provide much more than shelter. And while 97% of our clients are women and their children, our services – with the exception of transitional housing for the homeless – are available to men, as well as to women. Courage Connection reflects this inclusivity, the powerful connections we offer, and the courage it takes to imagine and create new possibilities for yourself and your family. As we look forward, we are focused on building a safer and stronger community. • Local police respond to over 2,000 domestic violence calls each year, and we have worked closely with the Champaign Police Department to provide resources for victims and training for officers. We are working to expand that outreach effort and help officers across the community respond in a way that ensures victim safety and offender accountability. • In Champaign County, 300 school-aged children are homeless on any given night. We are actively working to reduce the time a family in need spends on the waitlist for our homeless services. • Across the nation, people are beginning to grasp that domestic violence is everyone’s business. Our local education and outreach efforts include partnerships with the Champaign and Urbana Police Departments, University of Illinois Athletics and UI College of Law’s Domestic Violence Clinic, and increased training to volunteers and outside agencies. Our most important partnership, as always, is with you. Thank you. Most sincerely yours, Connections Store: (217) 384-2158 Lincoln Square Mall,•Urbana mpaign,508 IL 61820 (217) 352-7151 Isak E Church Street, Champaign, IL Griffiths 61820 • (217) 352-7151 3 We helped 709 unduplicated clients in fiscal year 2014 through our connected shelter, housing, and programs: Emergency Domestic Violence Shelter Courage Connection provides up to 30 days of secure, confidential housing for those fleeing abuse. The shelter is staffed 24 hours a day, and hotline calls are answered 24 hours a day. While the emergency shelter cannot house male clients, referrals and limited funds are available to secure safe shelter for male victims of domestic violence. 103 women and 83 children found safety here. Transitional Housing Transitional Housing is available through our Homeless Services and Domestic Violence Services Programs. For up to one year, clients have a place to call home while they work on budgeting, job skills, parenting, and all of the tools they need to live securely and safely on their own. 73 women and 71 children found the support they needed to begin again. Domestic Violence Outreach One-on-one counseling helps domestic violence victims address the ongoing effects of abuse and plan for a safer future. Court advocacy helps clients secure their safety through Orders of Protection. These services are available to residential clients and on an outreach basis to female and to male victims of domestic violence. 174 women and 43 children received domestic violence counseling. 259 women, 15 men, and three children utilized court advocacy services. Housing Outreach Affordable Permanent Housing and Tenant-Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) help people access and maintain quality, independent housing. Courage Connection has four single-family homes, one duplex (housing two families), and a rooming house for 4 single women – all rented at affordable rates. Courage Connection also works with people renting elsewhere in Champaign-Urbana. 52 women and 27 children began a path to success through housing outreach. Jobs Training Connections, the Courage Connection Store, is the site of our retail training program. This program helps people on parole or probation develop the job skills they need to succeed. Retail training is available to residential and outreach clients. mpaign, IL 15 women and 4 men found the tools for success through jobs training. 61820 • (217) 352-7151 508 E Church Street, Champaign, IL 61820 • (217) 352-7151 PHOTO BY: LAURA TROVILLION 4 The people we serve: My courage connection: 709 unduplicated clients: n 505 women: n 19 men: n 185 children: Age of clients n 18-30: n 30-59: n 60+: Tabatha had been in bad relationships before, but she’s a tough lady. And she realized she would show real strength by leaving her abuser. Tabatha found shelter and safety at Courage Connection. More importantly, she opened her eyes to the real abuse she and her daughter had experienced. Through domestic violence education, parenting classes, and counseling she learned to recognize the signs and long-term effects of abuse. She moved from emergency shelter into Courage Connection’s transitional housing program. I don’t want her to struggle with addiction like I did. I want her to be healthy and happy.” From her cell, Sherri saw the same women coming in and out, in and out of prison. That wasn’t the life she wanted, so she worked hard to get back on track and stay on track after serving her time. At Courage Connection, she is still working hard every single day: she has a job, takes classes at Parkland College, stays fit and active, and she prods her fellow residents to work toward their goals, as well. For Sherri, the first goal is finding her own place so that Lexi can live with her. Sherri wants Lexi to be successful in school and independent enough to resist peer pressure. Long term, she is studying to become an addictions counselor to help others who have struggled as she has. Sherri’s positivity is contagious. Whether she is at work or at the shelter, she is quick to give a word of encouragement and a smile. “The resources here are amazing. Yes, there are rules and things they expect out of you, but it will benefit you in the long run. Don’t give up! If I can do this, you can do this!” 6 Meeting the need Fiscal Year 2014: July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014.
