It also includes how to address some judge shortages and the difference between State and AFLACA accreditation. 24. It was approved that all Judging Sheets to be used in conjunction with this Manual were to have 5 lines for Judges’ Comments. This has been done in most cases even though the Manual does not show the extra lines. The Judging Sheets are available from your State Association Secretary or from the AFLACA website www.aflaca.org.au PLEASE NOTE: The Judging Sheets now contain the following wording, “Refer to AFLACA Competitor & Judging Manual No. 8 (Issued April 2015) and must be used by judges to avoid the use of “out of date” sheets. 25. For Level 4 (GEMBOREE®) competition the complainant may, after the GEMBOREE®, appeal against the Competition Committee ruling to the Secretary of AFLACA. If the competitor and or their agent are in attendance at the GEMBOREE® Such appeal must be made in writing within 7 days of the ruling and a copy sent to the Competition Committee. If the competitor has submitted an entry or entries that are received by mail, and then returned by mail, the competitor will have 14 days to lodge such an appeal. AFLACA must receive a copy of the original complaint together with judging sheet/s and actual entry (last mentioned only if practicable, eg Showcase is not possible, likewise a fragile entry). B9.4 The Schedule must contain all the information required by entrants so that they know exactly how, when and where to enter, the conditions under which entries will be judged, the Level of the Competition and awards which may be made. For Levels 3 & 4 Competition, all Facet Diagrams must be computer generated showing plan views of Crown, Pavilion, and Side/Girdle. These Designs must show full information eg L/W, T/W, U/W, and C/W, along with any notes needed to facilitate the correct cutting of the particular Design. B9.5 It is the Competition Committee’s responsibility to check that Entries are eligible in the Sections entered and Entrants are eligible in Divisions they have entered. A list of Competition winners is maintained by AFLACA and is available from the AFLACA web site www.aflaca.org.au, or a copy will be sent on request by AFLACA Competition Results Recorder, whose name and address are available from AFLACA Secretary. This list is made up of a series of sheets covering the Sections in Groups, so if your competition contains only Jewellery Sections, then please request only records for these Sections. B9.7 Supplies of Official judging sheets are obtainable from Member Bodies. Member Bodies may obtain ‘Master’ judging sheets from AFLACA web site www.aflaca.org.au or Secretary. A New Point: B9.10 That all faceting designs are drawn using computer aided design software such as GemCad. That all faceting designs be proof cut prior to the inclusion in any competition schedule. That all faceting designs chosen for competition do not breach Copyright laws. Two New Points: B9.11 For every Level 2, 3 and 4 Competition, all entries after judging must have the entry number attached to the item by a sticker or tag, prior to the entry being displayed. The only exceptions are entries that are placed into the showcase by the competitor or their agents e.g. Minerals, Fossils and carving - as these are already numbered. B9.12 For every Level 2, 3 and 4 Competition, entries should not be judged by unqualified judges. If qualified judges are not available the section should be marked as display only C1.2 Change of words If the entrant had won 1st place in a Novice or Intermediate Standard or Fancy Cabochon Section Level 2, 3 or 4 competition (1A or 1B), then the entrant MUST enter a higher Division when next entering either Section in a Competition at the same Level that they won. Facets Uniform: This feature refers to the consistency in shape and size of Facets in the same series. Do not include girdle facets as these are judged separately l. Girdle Uniform: A Continuous Girdle should be equally dimensioned at its widest and narrowest points to receive full points. Facets in the same series around a Faceted Girdle should be the same shape and dimensions to receive full points. FACET CUTS – GROUPS 8, 9, 10 AND 11 (CONT): D11.3 GENERAL NOTES: h. Judging of Fancy Cuts: With the judging of some Fancy Cuts, not all of the judging features listed on the judging sheet are applicable. When this occurs, the points for inapplicable features are deducted from the Total Possible 100. A Mineral Variety is defined as a Mineral which is of the same general chemical composition and Crystal System as the parent Species, but with minor differences such as: - Trace elements present, producing colour variations, eg Citrine, the yellow variety of QUARTZ; Emerald, a deep green variety of BERYL. - Deficiency in an element, eg Smaltite, an arsenic-deficient variety of Skutterudite. - The addition of an element, eg Melanite, a titanium-rich variety of Andradite. - Different Crystal Habit/Form, eg Cleavlandite, a variety of Albite in lamellar masses; Chalcotrichite, a variety of Cuprite in capillary or acicular form. Three additional points have been removed as they are no longer applicable. Part H: MINERALS – GROUPS 34 TO 38 (cont) H4. H4.4 DEFINITIONS (cont): MINERAL VARIETY (cont): b. I3. SHORTAGE OF JEWELLERY JUDGES: In recent times there has been a shortage of Jewellery Judges at Club competitions. This can be due to a variety of reasons including illness or unforseen emergencies occurring on the day of Judging. To eliminate the use of unqualified judges it is suggested that if a qualified Metalcraft Judge and a qualified Cabochon/Faceting Judge is available that the judging be split and done by both judges. The Metalcraft Judge would judge all aspects relating to the metalwork and use the Judging Sheet on page 73 and doing the AA and Creativity as 1st Judge. The Cabochon Judge would use the Worksheet on page 74 and be 2nd Judge for AA and Creativity. Both Judges names would then be shown on the Main Judging Sheet. This ruling should only take place for Level 1 or Level 2 and Regional and Agricultural Shows (Level 3) competitions, but NEVER for GEMKHANA (Level 3) or Level 4 GEMBOREE®. I4. ANOMALIES FACED BY THE JEWELLERY AND ENAMELLING JUDGES: Prior to this ruling Jewellery judges were expected to judge work which contains stones and or enamelling pieces. The majority of them have never done enamelling. For this reason pieces containing enamelling (Group 24) are removed from the Jewellery Judge portfolio. While a Jewellery Judge is experienced in judging Metalcraft and either Cabochons or Faceting, they do not have the experience or the competency to be able to judge enamelling. Therefore Group 24 should be judged by Enamelling Judges who are qualified to Judge Group 24 and Group 26. If an Enamelling Judge is a qualified Metalcraft judge they are obviously qualified to Judge Group 24. However in some cases Enamelling Judges are only qualified to do Group 26 (Enamelled work only). Then only in extreme cases would this judge be used to judge the enamelled piece only and a separate Metalcraft judge would be used to judge the metalwork only. It is suggested that this should only take place for Level 1 or Level 2 and Regional Shows (Level 3) competitions but NEVER for GEMKHANA (Level 3) or Level 4 GEMBOREE®. To cater for this situation minor changes could be made to judging sheets to show “Degree of Effort” for both metal work and enamelling. (For example Metalwork - 7 and Enamel - 8) I5 AFLACA JUDGING ACCREDITATIONS: Due to confusion over the awarding of AFLACA accreditation to judges the following explanation is given. Just because a person has been successful in completing a State/Association Judging course, and has been classified as a “Judge” they should not automatically be given AFLACA accreditation. The AFLACA accreditation is only obtained when the relevant State J & R Committee believes the Judge has sufficient experience and expertise to be nominated for this level of judging accreditation. It is NOT an automatic accreditation as some judges, for a variety of reasons never reach AFLACA accreditation status. Before a Faceting Judge can receive AFLACA accreditation there would naturally need to be close consultation with the Australian Facetors’ Guild (AFG) and any other relevant associations to ascertain the judge’s capabilities.
