This Year’s Charities
This is our 13th annual charity golf day, and we are once again delighted
to be raising funds for the Mayor of Carlisle’s charity fund. This year’s
Mayor, Councillor Steve Layden, has chosen Carlisle Youth Zone, Cumbria
Cerebral Palsy, Alzheimers UK and the Cathedral Development Fund as
his main beneficiaries. With your support, Two Castles will be doing all it
can to make as large a donation as possible to these charities.
About the Mayor
Councillor Steve Layden returned to the City Council in 2008 as elected
member for Brampton, having served as a Councillor for Longtown in the
early 1990’s. He has held various roles: Chair of the Resources Scrutiny
Panel, Chair of the Environment and Economy Scrutiny Panel, a member
of the Development Control Committee, the Licensing Panel and the
Audit Committee.
Steve was born in Heysham, Lancashire and after leaving Morecambe
Grammar School, studied drama at Bretton Hall. He began his teaching
career in Birmingham in 1968 before becoming Head of Drama at
Millfield School, Thornton Cleveleys in 1970. 3 Years later, at the age of
26, he came to Cumbria to take the post of Head of English and Drama at
Lochinvar School, Longtown, which he held for 21 years, 10 of which he
also held the role of Head of the Adult Education Centre. He moved to
Trinity School, Carlisle, for 2 years, before making a career change in 1997,
when he became Fundraising Manager for the British Heart Foundation
North Region. Over 15 years he managed fundraising groups and
organised events in Cumbria, Northumberland and Tyneside, overseeing
the raising of over £4 million in the
fight against heard disease. He
returned to his teaching career this
year as part time drama teacher
at Samuel King’s School, Alston.
He has been for many years a
senior moderator in drama for
AWA and an examiner in English
literature for OCR and Cambridge
International Examination Board.
Steve has a lifelong interest in the
theatre and music. Cricket is also
a great interest along with football
and horse racing. He has taken
part in many half marathons in
the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Development continues for Two Castles
Two Castles has completed 97 new homes within the last year in the North
West and North East;
In the North West, 27 properties were completed in February at Fir Tree Rise,
Kendal (above right) with Esh Property Services, as well as 18 properties in
March at Crookfield, Staveley (below left) with Russell Armer Homes.
In the North East, 25 properties were developed in October at Healeycote
View, Longframlington (above right) with Partner Construction, and 27
properties were completed in January at St Oswald’s Court and West Close,
Warkworth, with Esh Property Services. Both schemes were let to residents
who were already living within the parish or the adjoining parish.
Due for completion within 2015/16 are a further 94 homes.
These include Cedric Walk at Grange-over-Sands, which will add 43 new
homes, 32 of which are for affordable rent and 11 for shared ownership. This
scheme is being developed by Esh Property Services and is anticipated to
be completed by mid August. The site was originally a disused swimming
pool and car parking area and is part of a larger regeneration project which
was championed by Grange-over-Sands Town Council.
Anick View in Hexham is also being developed by Esh Properties Services
for 26 properties and is also due to be completed by mid August. The
scheme has been advertised via Northumberland Homefinder and was
extremely popular with over 300 bids for the 26 properties.
Another Kendal scheme Esh Property
Services are due to complete in March
2016 is at Burland Grove, Kendal (right)
which will produce 14 homes for this
high demand area. The scheme is
technically complicated and requires
piling up to depths of 11.5 metres.
We have no doubt that these will be
popular homes once built.
