Travel in the City of London
will be affected
Plan ahead for easier journeys
The Tour de France is coming to the City of London on Monday 7 July.
It promises to be a great occasion as the leading names in world cycling
compete for the famous Yellow Jersey on London’s streets.
However, road closures necessary for the event mean you’ll need to plan
your journeys around the area in advance.
About the event
Now in its 101st year, the Tour de France is the world’s largest annual
sporting event. The Mayor of London, Transport for London and London
& Partners are hosting the Tour to maintain our status as the world
capital for major events.
The race, which attracts around 12 million spectators along the full
length of the route, as well as a huge global TV audience, occasionally
visits neighbouring countries and this year’s event will get underway in
the UK.

Stage 3
After setting off from Cambridge, the race will pass through Essex
before arriving in Greater London via Epping Forest. It will run through
Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and into the East End before entering
the City at Tower Hill. The riders will then follow the Thames before
finishing on The Mall at around 15:30. Estimated arrival times for the
race are shown above and large numbers of people are expected to line
the route to enjoy the action.
The main map over the page shows the route in your area. There is also
an overview of the stage in London. A more detailed version of the full
route in London is available at tfl.gov.uk/tourdefrance
Ahead of the race itself, spectators will
also be able to enjoy the Tour’s Publicity
Caravan – a convoy of around 200
floats and other vehicles which travels
ahead of the race, distributing promotional
items and merchandise.
Road closures
The event route and some surrounding roads will close to traffic at 10:00
on Monday 7 July. Although the race isn’t due to arrive until the afternoon,
closures will start earlier so that barriers and other event infrastructure can
be installed to ensure the safety of competitors and spectators.
Roads will re-open as quickly as possible after the event, with the
intention that all roads will be open by 18:00, provided that it is safe
to do so. You can find a map of affected roads over the page.
Pedestrian access to properties will be available at all times and access
for emergency vehicles will not be affected.
Parking restrictions
Parking will be suspended along the route and on some surrounding
roads on Monday 7 July. If you usually park on an affected road, you’ll
need to move your vehicle in advance, otherwise it may be removed.
Signs will be installed in the days leading up to the event to remind
drivers of the suspensions.
Travel advice
Road users
Roads around the event route will be much busier than normal and
drivers are advised to avoid these areas if at all possible. If you intend
to drive on the day, please plan ahead, allow more time for your journey
and consider travelling at a different time to avoid delays.
Important points to remember:
•Vehicles will not be able to cross the event route while road closures
are in place
•Vehicle access to surrounding roads will be maintained for residents
and businesses, where possible:
- R
oads shown in green on the map will be accessible for residents
and businesses only, via an alternative route away from the road
closures. There will be no access for through traffic
- Roads shown in blue on the map will also be open, although vehicle
access will be restricted to nearby roads as it won’t be possible to
cross the event route during the closure period
•The A1211, which includes London Wall, will remain open all day,
although it will be busier than normal
• Tower, Southwark and Westminster Bridges will close to traffic at 10:00
for much of the day. Other central London bridges will remain open
•There are no planned closures on key strategic roads across London,
including the M25, A406 North Circular or Blackwall and Rotherhithe
Tunnels
Rail and Underground passengers
Tube and rail services will be the best way of getting around affected
areas on the day, although stations near the route will be busier than
normal. Visit tfl.gov.uk for live travel updates.
Bus passengers
Bus services, including routes 15, 42, 78, 100, 344 and RV1 which pass
through the City, will be affected by road closures. Some stops may also
be temporarily relocated or suspended.
Visit tfl.gov.uk nearer the date to see how your route may be affected
and allow more time for bus journeys on the day. Information will also
be available at affected bus stops in the run up to the event.
Walking and cycling
Walking or cycling may be the easiest way of getting around your
local area.
Footways along the route will be open as normal to ensure that pedestrian
access to properties is available and that spectators can enjoy the event.
However, please take extra care if crossing the route on foot, as event
vehicles may be using the road at high speed at any time during the
closure period.
Crowd and safety barriers will be in place along certain sections of the
route. Marshalled crossing points (marked on the map) will be available
to help people cross safely.
Barclays Cycle Hire users
Docking stations in and around the route area may be suspended.
Check tfl.gov.uk/barclayscyclehire for up-to-date information.
Where to watch the race
You can see the action along the route as the Caravan and race
travel through London. You can also follow the full stage live on
big screens, and enjoy other cycling-themed activities, at the free
Tour de France Fan Parks in Green Park, Trafalgar Square and Queen
Elizabeth Olympic Park.
