WILLIAMSBURG LANDING
DIRECTOR’S LETTER
Dear Friends,
Recently as part of a brainstorming session, I was asked to
complete the sentence, “Williamsburg Landing is ___”. So many
things popped into my mind: warm, active, connected, supportive,
attentive and perhaps most of all, caring.
We demonstrate our caring nature every day, in ways large and
small. Imagine the joy of knowing your waitstaff, who remembers
that you like green tea with your lunch and some hot fudge on
your ice cream. No need to ask — they care enough to remember.
Imagine the nurse assistant who knows which residents enjoy
hearing an old gospel tune and will sing softly as she goes about
her duties.
Residents often compliment our staff on how quickly we learn
their names and then call them by name without any prompting.
And hats off to our handyman and IT specialist who get frequent
compliments for helping with those special requests.
Williamsburg
Think about our facilities team. So many times, I have caught one
of them carrying a heavy bag or opening a door for a resident. They
don’t ask, they just help when someone needs a hand. It’s these
little things that make Williamsburg Landing a very special place.
connected,
I am so proud to live and work with the people of Williamsburg
Landing. It is an honor to present to you our latest annual report in
which we highlight the people of Williamsburg Landing who have
generously supported us with gifts to the Benevolence Fund and so
many other projects.

RESIDENTS’ COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S REPORT
The Residents’ Council is a vital part of our life at Williamsburg
Landing. It is comprised of twelve Council members from across the
campus. It is a working council and as such each member acts as a
liaison to a committee. In my role as President I serve on the Landing
Corporate Board.
Here are just a few examples of the many accomplishments in 2012:
One of the most active committees is the Welcome Committee.
Ginny Dittman and her committee had as a goal to personally meet
each new resident and provide them with the information they will
need to enjoy life at the Landing. And with 20 new residents in 2012,
they were indeed busy.
Another hard working committee is the Library Committee led
by Nell Stowe. 2012 was a challenging year for the Library. During
the Landing Building renovation project, it was displaced from its
long-time location just off the lobby into a smaller space down the
hall. Not everything could be housed in the new location, so the
Committee members pared the collection and stored what did not
fit. They worked tirelessly, and we all benefited from their hard work.
The renovation of the Landing Building meant huge changes for
our Culinary Services department. Our Culinary Committee led by
Kay Bland worked closely with Chef Dan Carr throughout the year.
One of the many challenges involved the closing of the main dining
room and the opening of the Cove Café. Our congratulations to the
committee in keeping us all informed and aware of the changes that
took place.
The renovation of the Landing Building brought new opportunities
to the Green Committee led by Jack Edwards. The committee worked
to select energy and water saving devices for the new space. They also
lent their support to the purchase of an all-electric vehicle for our
Security Staff.

A TOAST TO THE ARTS
Each year, the Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce sponsors Arts
Month, a celebration of the performing arts, the visual arts, and
the culinary arts in our town. This past year Williamsburg Landing
was invited to participate as one of the over fifty events by hosting
an art show. Led by Senior Director of Community Relations Kathy
Kammer, a team was assembled to make this dream a reality.
Kathy is modest about her contribution saying, “A Toast to the
Arts was a team effort in every sense of the word. The planning
committee created a system for borrowing the art, other partners
curated the show, and still others arrived to help install everything.
And of course, our stars are the residents who so generously lent
their works!”
This wasn’t just any art show — it was an extravaganza! Over
200 pieces were collected from dozens of residents. Some of our
residents shared works they created while others shared pieces
they collected. The range of art was fascinating. In our midst, we
had potters and silversmiths, painters and carvers, woodworkers
and jewelry-makers. For one glorious day in September it was all
assembled at the William A. Doig Health Club and Spa.
A Toast to the Arts took over the entire downstairs of the Health
Club. In the studio, a few of our resident painters were featured.
The billiards room was transformed with an extensive collection of
Inuit art. Oils, pastels, and watercolors were hung on every available
wall and the exercise room showcased woodworking, jewelry and
textiles.
Once everything was hung, we threw open the doors and hundreds
of residents and visitors poured through the doors. Our partners at
the Williamsburg Symphonia added a special touch to the day by
providing a trio for our listening pleasure.
Williamsburg Landing is…creative.

WILLIAMSBURG LANDING ON THE HALF SHELL
Oyster Roast & Open House
Williamsburg is so fortunate to enjoy such beautiful fall weather that
we decided to celebrate that with ‘Williamsburg Landing on the
Half Shell.’ We opened our doors and welcomed over one hundred
depositors and prospects to a Fall Oyster Roast & Model Home Tour
of the Moorings neighborhood. Setting up a tent near Earl’s Court,
our guests enjoyed live music, oysters and barbeque before visiting
three open homes — a great way to ponder what it would be like to
live here. Our residents acted as hosts and mingled with the guests
throughout the afternoon.

HOLIDAY CARING AND SHARING
Williamsburg Landing
has a ‘hard and fast’
rule — no tipping to
employees, a policy
that
protects
both
our residents and our
employees. However, it
is difficult to contain the
appreciation
residents
have for employees who
make the Landing hum
throughout the year. Many years ago in a show of appreciation the
Residents’ Association started a holiday fund to say ‘thank you’.
Each year the Residents’ Association has as its goal to distribute a
gift to every hourly employee on campus. Sometimes Santa himself
comes to a Residents’ Association meeting. There are reminder signs
in the lobby, together with boxes placed around campus to collect
the checks.
In recent years, the campaign has raised nearly $200,000 each
year. Early in December, Residents’ Council members meet and
painstakingly write hundreds of checks, for distribution just before
Christmas.
The holiday fund drive is just one of the ties that bind our
community together.

WILLIAMSBURG LANDING
E-CALL COMES TO WILLIAMSBURG LANDING
Williamsburg Landing had a dilemma: our emergency call system
by which residents summon help in the event of a fall or a health
emergency was no longer going to be serviced by the company that
made it. As we pondered what to do we learned of a new technology
that not only would replace the outdated one, but would improve
upon it. Made by HealthSense, this system would do what the
original system did and so much more.
First, we had to make some changes. For instance, the new system
known on campus as e-Call, required Williamsburg Landing to
upgrade its connectivity, so that anyone using the system regardless
of location on campus, could be located. We had to consider the
hills and ravines we enjoy so much. For example, if a resident fell
while outdoors, we needed to be able to locate them quickly.
The new system required time to test the coverage. Once we were
confident the system was working as it should, each resident was
issued a new pendant. So our immediate problem was solved —
every resident once again had a reliable way to get help if needed.
Sandy Smead, Director of Ambulatory Care and Home Care Service,
was an integral part of the team that selected the system, and now
that it is installed, she wonders how we ever did without it. “It’s
terrific — it provides the link we needed, to be able to serve our
residents quickly.”
Williamsburg
Landing is…
connected.
After addressing our immediate need, Sandy says residents voiced
their preference for staying in their homes (also known as ‘aging
in place’). The team realized we could utilize eNeighbor to make
this a reality. The eNeighbor system can add sensors throughout
the home that detect daily routines, and when that routine is
interrupted, someone comes to check on you — even if you are
unable to trigger your pendent. Sensors placed on entry doors are a
perfect way to monitor those who may have a tendency to wander.

WILLIAMSBURG LANDING
DOIG HEALTH CENTER’S 5TH ANNIVERSARY
The William A. Doig Health Club and Spa celebrated its 5th
anniversary in May of 2012. The two-day event started with an
elegant brunch buffet organized by our Executive Chef Dan Carr
in appreciation of all the support from our residents and members.
Over 220 people were served a smorgasbord that was both healthy
and delicious. The next day Dr. Tom Sattler gave a presentation
entitled “Discover Your Wellness Potential” with over 175 people in
attendance. Dr. Sattler is a member of the National Fitness Hall of
Fame and a former trainer for the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago
Cubs. His presentation was both informative and humorous. He
inspired our guests to realize that their power to change their mind
and body is much greater than they may think.
At the celebration, we celebrated our founders for their
contributions. Without the incredible vision, drive and
determination of the late Hank Steers, former Chair of the
Health and Wellness Committee and Bill Doig, retired CEO of
Williamsburg Landing, the Health Club would not be a reality.
The Health Club was named after Mr. Doig as a retirement present
in 2007. He and his wife Ruby attended the anniversary and were
recognized at the celebration for their very substantial contributions.
Scott Richardson was also recognized for his contributions as the
first Director of the Health Club. His meticulous planning laid the
foundation for a successful program for many years to come.
