Message from the
National President
Dear Sorors,
T
here is a saying that “everything is bigger in Texas.” This is definitely
the case when it comes to Houston since this city is the largest city in
the Southwest and the South and can contain the cities of New York,
Washington, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Minneapolis, and Miami.
What better place to host tens of thousands of Delta women for the
52nd National Convention? Therefore, as the National President of this great and
grand Sorority, it is my distinct honor to issue the official Call to Convention for the
52nd National Convention in Houston, Texas July 23 – 29, 2015.
How apropos is it that we will convene in a city whose motto is: “Houston:
The City With No Limits” and with a state motto that says simply “Friendship?”
Not only is the state of Texas the birthplace of Founders Zephyr Chisolm Carter (El
Paso), Jessie McGuire Dent (Galveston), Frederica Chase Dodd (Dallas) and Myra
Davis Hemmings (Gonzales), but our beloved soror, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, is also a daughter of Houston. We, as Delta and African-American women, have
exceeded the limits others have attempted to place on courageous women like our
Founders and Soror Jordan. It is because of them that we can literally tread on the
trails that were blazed for us as we arrive at our “rendezvous with destiny.”
Your National Executive Board, National Headquarters staff, Convention Co- Dr. Paulette C. Walker
ordinator and hostess chapters have been hard at work making sure that this 52nd
National Convention will leave you informed and up-to-date on Delta Sigma Theta’s internal policies, national initiatives and
external partnerships. Along with setting the agenda and planning the logistics of the concurrent workshops and business
sessions that you will attend, we also wanted to make sure that you would be thoroughly entertained as you sing, laugh and
fellowship with your sorors from around the globe during other events.
Our National Convention Signature events promise to be not only enjoyable but truly unforgettable. National Gospel
Recording Artists Beverly Crawford and Donald Lawrence headline our Gospel Concert! In addition, during the Delta
Extravaganza, the Mighty O’JAYS will render the ultimate R&B experience!
Once the work of Delta is complete, you can plan on experiencing Houston’s diverse culture and tropical temperatures
with sorors, friends and family. We are fortunate to be in Texas’ “Culture and Culinary Capital” which houses more than 8,600
restaurants and eating establishments covering more than 60 ethnically diverse cuisines. Be sure to pack cool and comfortable
clothing as Houston averages nearly 100 days per year of high temperatures of 90 degrees or more.
You will not want to miss this opportunity to take part in the many facets of attending a National Convention. Please
believe that your presence would be missed if you decide not to attend. Even though we intend to paint Houston red, this convention will not be the same without you!
In the pages of this Call to Convention, you will receive important information regarding registration, housing, dates, deadlines, activities, events and services as well as pertinent “Things to Remember.” You are encouraged to view the subscription
event details. Please remember, sorors, it is very important that your hotel accommodations are made inside Delta’s reserved
block that has been prearranged exclusively for our membership. Reserving rooms outside the block could result in Delta paying a tremendous penalty.
So, my sorors, meet me in Houston for this first convention of Delta’s second Century of Service. It will be an experience
filled with treasured memories that will last a lifetime.
In Service, Leadership and Empowerment,
Dr. Paulette C. Walker
National President

Message from the
National Convention Coordinator
Welcome to the 52nd National Convention
I
t is with immense pleasure and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the
52nd National Convention. On behalf of the Greater Houston Area
Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated welcome to fabulous Houston, Texas- a city where Southern Hospitality and Urban
Chic go hand in hand.
As your Host Chapters, our membership have worked diligently to prepare a week of fun-filled activities for the members and families of our great
sisterhood. We hope that during your stay with us, you will connect with old
friends, make some new ones, and enjoy all that our great city has to offer.
This fourth-largest city in the United States with more than 4-million res- Josie V. Daniels
idents is filled with an enormous amount of Texas pride. You will find many
wonderful things to do and sights to see like the historic museum district,
highly regarded performing arts venues, Space Center Houston, world-class sports arenas and the largest medical
center in the world.
No trip to the Bayou City would be complete without a stop at one of the most famous shopping centers in the
world-The Galleria. The three-story compound houses more than 375 stores, an ice rink, two hotels and several
restaurants. Akin to the designer names on New York’s famed Fifth Avenue or Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, The
Galleria boasts boutiques like Tory Burch, Valentino, St. John and Yves Saint Laurent. Neiman Marcus,
Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Macy’s flank the sprawling structure.
It also goes without saying that culinary diversity in Houston ranges from the Iconic Frenchy’s Chicken, the
Breakfast Klub’s Wings & Waffles, Holley’s Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar, the world-renowned Tony’s, Vic and
Anthony’s, Pappadeaux’s, Quattro at the Four Seasons, and the list goes on….
We want you to leave with a sense of “ah” and sparkles in your eyes; remembering that Houston is a city of
communities in which Deltas strive to make a better place to live and work. Your presence here will leave a lasting
impression on our city and communities.
Welcome to Houston.

Message from the
Hostess Chapter Presidents
Dear Sorors,
I
n 1969, “Houston” was the first word spoken from the
moon. The Apollo 11 mission established a place in history for the city when astronaut Neil Armstrong spoke
the now-famous line, “Houston, Tranquility Base here.
The Eagle has landed”.
And ‘Houston’ will be on the lips of Sorors from Texas and
all over the world, as The Bayou City hosts The 52nd National
Convention and Deltas land in Houston, Texas.

The Imporance of Booking Your Room Through Delta
MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING HOUSING
✮
I can find a lower rate on the Internet. Why
should I book a room through Delta?
Negotiated hotels rates
incorporate many benefits
for you and Delta. Based
on the number of rooms
in Delta’s block, the hotel
provides complimentary
or reduced rates for meeting room rental, staff
accommodations, and food and beverage. In addition, a
percentage of sleeping room revenue is often rebated to
Delta. The rebate is used to cover audio/visual, electrical, and other meeting costs incurred at the hotel or
convention center.
If Delta is unable to achieve its room block commitment because attendees are making reservations at other hotels or canceling/shortening their length of stay
at the hotel, the hotel charges Delta an attrition fee to
make up for its lost sleeping room revenue. An increase
in attrition fees may lead to an increase in registration fees or other expenses related to the convention.
Anticipated sleeping room pickup is Delta’s strongest
tool when negotiating future sleeping room rates and
meeting space.
alternate hotel and pay for one night accommodations.
This benefit is only extended to attendees at the “Official Convention Hotels.”
✮
What is Delta doing to reduce its exposure to
attrition fees?
Delta has teamed up with a housing agency who tracks
sleeping room reservations and cancellations for each
National Convention and works with future hotels in
adjusting sleeping room blocks to match current trends.
✮
✮
What other benefits are there to reserving a
room through Delta?
Delta and our official housing company will work
on your behalf to help
resolve any issues, if there
is a dispute with the hotel,
or if you are dissatisfied
with your accommodations. Shuttle transportation is
provided to registered delegates within the official room
block at hotels that are not within walking distance to
the convention center. When you factor in cab fares
and travel time to an alternate hotel, you may discover
the benefits are not as great as you originally planned.
Staying at an official hotel allows you to better network
with your peers and remain in the center of the activity surrounding the meeting. In addition, Delta hotel
contracts include clauses that protect our attendees in
a variety of areas. For example, if the hotel is oversold
and must relocate an attendee to another hotel, the
hotel must provide complimentary transportation to the
Why you should not use a debit card to book a
hotel room?
Using a debit card to book a hotel can cost you dearly. It’s typically better to use a credit card rather than a
debit card when checking into a hotel. The hotel will
place a hold on the money in your checking account to
cover the potential balance of your stay. The room rate,
taxes and estimated incidentals ($50 per day) such as
meals, telephone calls,
Internet charges and
mini-bar fees will all be
used to calculate the
hold. Such holds can remain for several days to
more than a week after
you check out and can
cause your card to be
declined or charged hefty overdraft fees for purchases
you thought you had money in your account to cover.
Hotels also put holds on credit cards, but unless you’re
up against your credit limit that usually isn’t a problem.
It is important to note that the non-refundable two
night deposit will be deducted from the card that you
enter at the time of booking your hotel room. The card
entered at the time of booking will also be on-file with
the hotel once our official housing company submits
the final rooming list to the hotel.
✮
What if I don’t have a credit card?
Don’t have a credit card to use? You’ll need to keep a
high balance in your checking account to cover debit
card holds when traveling. Better yet, to safeguard the
checking account where your bill payments and other
transactions are withdrawn, open a second checking
account used only for debits.
