“MÝVATN” - The northern lights capital of Iceland
Welcome to this remote location at the edge of the interior of Iceland, the perfect place to
witness the Northern Lights. The rural area around the beautiful lake has very little artificial light
pollution, which makes the location ideal.
The lava landscape and natural features make the region perfect for photographing both day
and night. The climate is dry as the region is further away from the coast, therefore the sky is
often clear and that is the most important thing to see the lights.
Even though the night offers the northern lights the days are fascinating as well. The winter
landscape is stunning and different winter activities on offer. At the end of the day it´s amazing
to rest in the warm geothermal lagoon at the Mývatn Naturebath.
All around the lake you find good accommodation, restaurants and tour operators. Check for
their Northern Lights packages from 3-5 days, filled with activity and hospitality.
The perfect place!
Visitors come to Mývatn to witness the Northern Lights, a natural light display in the sky caused
by charged particles fed by solar wind into the atmosphere in Arctic and Antarctic regions.
Northern Lights can be seen during the hours of darkness from late August until the end of
March, when the sky is clear and the solar activity is enough.
Another well-known natural wonder of northern latitudes is the midnight sun, which has attracted
people to the Arctic regions for years. The polar day lasts from the end of May until the middle of
July. This is the season when day and night blur into one and the air fills with endless birdsong.

Gamli Bistro

- Old Farm Bistro
Our beautiful bistro is placed beside
Hótel Reynihlíð, in the old farm house
of Reykjahlíð Farm. If there is an original
Icelandic Country Tavern, this is „the place“.
From early morning until late afternoon it is dominated
by the atmosphere of a friendly Bistro. In the evening
it converts into a steakhouse followed by country pub
with unique international clientele where the „musician
and poet“ lurking inside everyone awakens. So one
can expect live music performed either by guests or
professional entertainers as well as singalongs and
other performances inspired by the macical summer
nights at Lake Myvatn.
Meals:
From the grill, we offer a variety of light meals and
steaks as well as the traditional Icelandic meat soup
with home baked bread. Of course we offer our
special hot spring bread with smoked arctic charr, the
special dish of Lake Myvatn. On the menu you can
find good variety of local food as well as international.
The bar at the bistro:
Our bar serves a variety of drinks, both alcoholic and
non alcoholic. Our staff is pleased to fulfil the needs
of our customers. We serve italian coffee, tea and
international brands of spirits and beers, as well as
Icelandic.
We look forward serving you!

The Yulelads
Local traditions
Who are they?
In Iceland we do not have one Santa Claus... we have 13 Yule Lads. They are the sons of Grýla
and Leppalúði, vicious trolls that live in Lúdentarborgir in the Mývatn area. As the lads grew up
they wanted a place of their own and Dimmuborgir was the perfect place for them to settle down.
An old legend in Iceland is, that 13 days prior to Christmas the Yule Lads start coming down
from the mountains, one each night. Children in Iceland place their best shoe on their windowsill
before going to bed and each night a little gift is left in it from the Yule Lad that came down from
the mountains that night. If the child has been misbehaving or is late to bed, there might be a raw
potato left instead.
Visiting them in Dimmuborgir in December and joining them for their annual bath in the Mývatn
Naturebath is truly an unforgettable experience for children as well as adults.

Hiking routes
marked trails - see map
1. Vindbelgjarfjall (Vindbelgur Mountain)
The trail to Vindbelgjarfjall (529 m above sea level) starts west of the farm Vagnbrekka. About 1 hr to the top.
Note that the trail is steep at times. Great view from the top over the region!
2. Skútustaðagígar (Skútustaðir pseudocraters)
The trail runs around Stakhólstjörn and takes about 1 hr to walk. There is also a shorter circle. This is an easy
walk through pseudocraters and in close proximity to diverse birdlife.
3. Kálfaströnd and Höfði
This route starts just inside the gate to Kálfaströnd farm and leads to Klasar, opposite Höfði. It is an easy walk
through bizarre lava formations and landscape. Excellent for bird watching. The Höfði peninsula is also a great
place to walk, starting by the parking the trail leads from the gate through a small forest along the lake shore.
Beautiful lava formations and birdlife.
4. Dimmuborgir
Several hiking routes have been marked out in this area of spectacular lava formations. At all crossings you will
find a map of the area which indicates where you are. Most are easy to walk. The small circle takes about 30 min
to walk but the big circle that takes you to the well known “church” formation takes about 1 hr.
5. Reykjahlíð-Stóragjá–Grjótagjá–Hverfjall–Dimmuborgir
This trail starts by the village of Reykjahlíð on the crossroads of route no.1 turning east towards Egilsstaðir. The
path takes you to the fissure of Grjótagjá and then on to Hverfjall crater. From here the path goes along the rim
of the crater to the top and from there down the steep hill on the southern side and on into Dimmuborgir lava
formations. 3-4 hrs.
6. Hverir - Námafjall Mountain
The hot spring area named Hverir, east of Mt. Námafjall, is one of the high temperature areas in Iceland. Please
stay on the track and do not cross the lines indicating the trail. People have sustained serious burns by going
over the lines and too close to the boiling mud.
7. Krafla / Leirhnjúkur Mountain / Gjástykki
An easy trail leads from the parking area around the active area of Leirhnjúkur. Walk through the hot spring area
and steaming lava to craters formed in the Krafla fires 1975-1984. A hiking trail leads from the hot spring area
to the crater Hófur, which is north of Leirhnjúkur. Hófur is a beautifully formed crater dating back to the Mývatn
fires, 1725-1729. 1-3 hrs
8. The Krafla Route (Leirhnjúkur - Hlíðarfjall - Reykjahlíð village)
A trail leads from the southern part of the Leirhnjúkur circle to the village of Reykjahlíð. It crosses the flow of lava
since 1725-1729 and on towards Mt. Hlíðarfjall, then along the Eldá river (lava river). This hike takes 3-5 hrs.
9. Hlíðarfjall Mountain
There is a marked route from the Krafla Route to the top of Mt. Hlíðarfjall. The trail is very steep and takes 30-40
minutes each way (from the Krafla route). From the mountain top, which is 771 meters high, there is an excellent
view over the lake and the surrounding area.
10. The Stóra Víti crater by Mt. Krafla
This is a short trail around the maar (explosion-crater) Stóra-Víti, which was formed in 1724. The trail goes
through a hot spring area east of the crater. The walk takes 40-60 minutes.
11. The Dalfjall Mountain Route
This route begins south of Leirhnjúkur and provides an excellent view of the entire area. It ends by the highway
at Námaskarð pass. The route is varied and interesting, and Mt. Dalfjall gives a good insight into the process of
geological divergence in the area. This hike takes about 3-5 hrs.
12. The North Bank Circle
Starts at the lake shore across from Hótel Reynihlíð. Nice walk along the lake front and rough lava. Good for bird
observation. 2-3 hrs.
The Mývatn region is perfect for hikers, varied marked trails and beautiful landscapes

Mývatn, Laxá and most of the surroundings are protected by law and are
declared as globally important wetlands. People are obliged to treat the local
environment with care and avoid interrupting the sensitive wildlife.
We ask you to keep in mind a few guidelines:
Visit Mývatn 2016 - Hönnun Eyrún Björnsdóttir - Prentun Ásprent.
• Lava formations and vegetation are sensitive, walk only on marked trails.
• Do not pile up rocks or make graffiti in nature.
• Off road driving is prohibited by law.
• Overnight stay is only allowed in designated
camping areas and accommodations.
• Help us keep the area clean - leave nothing
behind except footprints.
Think of your safety:
Weather can change rapidly, be careful in geothermal areas and observe that lava
fields hide deep crevasses that snow covers in winter.
Sailing, including kayaks, is not permitted for visitors in the nature reserve between
April 15th until August 20th. Hiking in designated bird protection areas is only permitted on marked hiking trails between May 15th until July 20th.
The local information center and ranger station are located in the village of Reykjahlíð.
We welcome you to visit us for further information, or talk to the rangers operating in
the field.
