I hope everyone will be enjoying the holidays with loved ones and close friends. Some people drive themselves crazy with shopping, party planning, finding last minute Christmas sweater, etc. Many people start shopping immediately after Thanksgiving. My civil service duty is to help balance out this phenomena by shopping the day before Christmas. I don’t have much on my Christmas list, but there’s a good chance that if some sort of metal working tool lands under my Christmas tree, I will be all set until next year. That being said, given the option, I would rather that money be spent on someone less fortunate. I have everything I need in this world and I am grateful for it; and therefore wish that the gift giving by all go towards those in need. And with that said, I will also say Happy New Year to All! I will update my New Years’ Resolution list by crossing off 2014 and writing 2015 on it. One thing I look forward to this year is going to the York, PA National Truck Show with my father and anyone else that wishes to attend. We only get so many chances to have a National Show in some proximity to the East Coast; the last one being in Springfield, MA. There are years when you will say “one of these days I’ll go get that ol’ truck started”. This is the year I want to be able to say “I got that ol’ truck started!” With some planning and work now, you’ll be ready by the end of May. Unless, you have a General Motors truck, then you probably should have started yesterday….. (Just kidding). As for the Club, we will start a new year and I challenge all of you to think of a way that you can help the Club grow. Some members are afraid of change, others only see change as good opportunities for growth. I would like to grow the Club and stir up enthusiasm, without losing some of the traditions we have all come to love. If you have an idea for something you would like to see us do, call or email me or any of the Board and we will see how we can make it happen. There are many that help the Club on a daily basis; others that we never get a chance to hear from. If you are of the latter, please feel free to contact us to make your voice heard, even if you want to remain anonymous. We welcome all ideas. Beyond that, I will say that in all reality, the Club is temporarily in trouble in its current state. The lack of interest in certain board positions, namely the Treasurer position, is troubling to me. I honestly believe that there is a hesitance that stems from the feeling that either the job is more involved than one is led to believe, or someone doesn’t want to be put on the spot in a public forum, or that they are not up to the skill level required to perform the job. This goes for all board positions, actually. I think if you were to step forward and open up a dialogue with me or another board member, your concerns could be alleviated for sure. This is an antique truck club, not a state government. To keep the club healthy, the Board will be appointing a treasurer, but any help with identifying the right individual would be a huge help. In closing I say that I look forward to seeing everyone at the Foskett’s in January. For the winter, stay warm! Find your shovel, truck tire chains, and gloves before the snow comes. If you have someone plow your driveway for you, tip them a little something extra so you go to the top of their list. And most importantly, keep the sand and salt off my Antique! ~~Jonathan Yeomans 3 NUTMEG CHAPTER MINUTES OF MEETING November 16, 2014 Call to Order: 12:30 PM by Nutmeg Chapter President Jonathan (Jon) Yeomans Opening: The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance led by the Club President. 108 members were in attendance for the annual Thanks Giving Dinner and Meeting. New member Jim Miller from Groton was introduced as were the following guests: Paul Sherve, Chuck Higley, Butch Carney, and Tom Mulcahy. Secretary’s Report: A motion was made to accept the Recording Secretary’s Report of the September 21, 2014 meeting as it appeared in the Newsletter. The motion was seconded and the members voted unanimously to approve the report. Treasurer Report: Arnold Briggs Club Account: Annual dinner receipts were deposited and two checks were written to pay for the Newsletter and the Caterer’s charge. Show Account: There has been no activity in this account since June. A member raised the question about a Certificate of Deposit and Savings Bond. Jonathan noted that he would look into the matter. A motion was made and seconded and the vote was unanimous to accept the Treasurer’s Report. Membership Report: Betty Robertson There are currently 180 members listed on the Club Roster. 156 members are current with dues payment. Jonathan noted that he has personally contacted the 24 Club members who have not paid dues. A note will be included in the Newsletter stating that dues support the delivery of the Newsletter. Dues are payable at the Annual Meeting. They also may be paid by mail or at the Brooklyn Show in June. Dues will not be raised in 2015. OLD BUSINESS 1. The Website: Address: nutmeg.aths.org Jonathan reported that the ATHS-supported website has been built but is in need of Nutmeg Chapter Personalization with respect to the posting of pertinent Chapter information in the following tabs: Calendar, History, Newsletters, Membership, Members and Classified Ads. The 2014 Show truck pictures are ready to be uploaded. A history of the Nutmeg Chapter will be submitted along with a Calendar of 2015 events from the ATHS site. A link from the National ATHS website leads visitors to the Nutmeg Chapter site. 2. The Newsletter: Don Arnauckas, Editor A. Don noted that the stolen truck of Kevin Hass has been recovered. B. Don identified the Puzzle Truck. It is a Le-Roi conversion made up of various truck parts from Milwaukee, Wisconsin 3. Members’ Memorial Plaque: Bernice was able to compile names only to February 2007. A request will be put in the next edition of the Newsletter for input from members to help update this list from 2007 to the present. NEW BUSINESS 1. 2015-2017 Slate of Officers This Annual meeting marked the time of the election of new Nutmeg Chapter officers to serve the next two-year term from 2015 through 2017. Business was conducted to present a slate of officers to fill the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and two Members-at-Large to complete the Board of Directors. Other positions to be filled included: Membership Chairperson, Newsletter Editor, and Website Master. Nominations were from the Board of Directors, as well as from floor during the meeting. Chapter members voted unanimously to approve the 2015-2017 Slate of Officers and staff as presented at this annual meeting. President: Jonathan Yeomans Membership Chairperson: Elizabeth Robertson Vice President: Peter Yeomans Newsletter Editor: Don Arnauckas Treasurer: Open Position Show Chairperson: John Raymond Secretary: Betty Jay Webmaster: Linda Raymond At Large: Harold Foskett At Large: Bryan Main 4 Arnold Briggs has stepped down after serving consecutive terms as Treasurer. The Club is in need of a volunteer to serve as Treasurer. There were no nominations from the floor and no volunteers. The duties include keeping and balancing two checkbooks that generate 15-20 written checks a year, making bank deposits, handling mail related to finances and preparing summary reports to the Club at its meetings six times a year. It was noted that officers and board members cannot serve in this position. Members voted to give the Board of Directors the authority to attempt to fill the position by appointing a Treasurer in absence of an elected Treasurer. A volunteer for this position would be the ideal solution. 2. The 2015 Brooklyn Show: June 21, 2015 It was noted that particular attention should be directed to the following areas: The volunteer positions of gate keepers, truck parkers and directors The parking plan for truck locations on the Fairgrounds (John Raymond) Procedural steps should be in writing for benefit of other members’ knowledge Two club Flea Market attendants to collect the $25.00 fee. A location map of vendor set ups Develop a chart of available positions for commitment of members to be distributed at meetings and published in the Newsletter. 3. The Club is in need of an Event Planner to prepare the Calendar of Events outlining all truck activities for 2015. Albert Newhouse took care of this in years past and it is a valuable resource for members to know about all the activities for the trucks and to plan accordingly. A volunteer is requested to take this position. 4. 2015 Brooklyn Show Tee Shirts and Dash Plaques The following were nominated as featured truck of 2015: Art Jay’s Federal, Don Arnauckas’ Kenworth, Carl Messier’s Brockway, a Manchester Brothers vehicle, and Harold Foskett’s International. A written ballot vote was taken and Art’s 1948 Federal was selected by vote count. 5. Annual Donations from Gate Receipts in the Show Account As is traditional at our Thanks Giving Dinner Meeting, the Board of Directors submitted the annual recommendations of recipients and monetary amounts for the Annual Giving from the Nutmeg Chapter. East Woodstock Cornet Band $250.00 Boy Scouts Troop #26 $300.00 Haul of Fame Museum $676.00 Connecticut Fire Museum $500.00 Windham Area Interfaith Ministry $500.00 Salvation Army $650.00 ARC Ruth Bonney Dream Fund $500.00 A motion was made and seconded to approve the funding of these donations in the amount of $3,376.00 from the Show Account as recommended by the Board of Directors. The January 2015 meeting will be held at Foskett Equipment in Woodstock on January 11, 2015. 3. Jonathan led the membership in a round of appreciation for the women club members who work to support the club membership and activities. 4. Tom Holcombe requested a volunteer to haul a five-ton Autocar Truck that he recently purchased from Warehouse Point to Burlington CT (approximately 29 miles). There being no further business, this meeting adjourned at 1:50 PM. Members proceeded to gather for the dinner. All Nutmeg Chapter members are ask to send any information they might have to Jon Yeomans. Tractor Transportation Safety Harold Foskett submitted the following letter from the New England Chapter IH Collectors newsletter that serves as a reminder to all of us who transport our antique vehicles. We cannot be too safe on the roads today. On September 14, 2014 at about 8:00 am traveling to a show in Bennington, Vermont my truck, trailer and tractor was involved in a 5 car accident. It was on Route 7 North. Luckily, no one was hurt. A car traveling South was rear ended and hit me on my driver’s side. My truck, trailer, and tractor spun around in the road hitting two cars and rolling the trailer on its side. The tractor came to rest on the hood of another car. It was quite an experience. The truck and trailer are a total loss. I only had coverage on the truck. It has been a battle with insurance companies for a while now because it was not my fault, the trailer and tractor might be covered. Fortunately, the tractor suffered minor damage. It was chained down rather well. Everyone there that day complemented me on that. If the tractor had just been strapped down, it would have been a lot worse. So I would like to urge people in the club to pay attention to how they load their equipment, and what they use to secure it. Also to think about extra insurance for trailers, antique tractors, and equipment that we are hauling. Does the local club chapter or national collector’s association offer any insurance programs?? If that tractor were destroyed, I would be out of luck. Please help me make others aware so in the event that something does happen, it will not be as painful of an experience as I am going through. This is by no means going to stop me from going to shows and doing what I love to do. Thank you, Rich Ordynowicz—Granby MA Chapter 18 Member, New England Chapter IH Collectors From our last Steering Column……………. The Unknown Truck pictured in the last newsletter is a Le-Roi Conversion put together by the Le-Roi Engine Co. from Milwaukee, WI. It was a conglomerate of various truck parts. Le-Roi was known for their large V-8 gas engines that were installed in ten-ton Army trucks. Le-Roi was purchased by Waukesha Engine Company. 6 Enjoy this article from the August-September 2014 Issue of Land Line Magazine about a ATHS Member 7 8 9 Welcome New Nutmeg Chapter Members Harry Hall, North Scituate, RI Richard E. No one knew where it came from, so it must be Santa. This is a rare manifold because it takes an uptake carburetor. Finally at the Annual Dinner, I met Santa. Thank you to Bob Pittsley for the gift. This is the season for giving. It is people like this that make me proud to be a member of this club. “MERRY CHRISTMAS to All from Harold and Cynthia” This 1947 Sterling was purchased new by J. M. Nutmeg member John O’Connor of Canaan started driving this truck at the age of fourteen. John still drives part-time and was the recipient of the ATHS Golden Achievement Award at the Springfield Show in 2012. John states that this truck was cut-up for scrap in the 1970’s. Our thanks to Mike Pietraroia for his contributions to the Newsletter. COLD HARD FACTS FROM THE EDITOR When I joined the Nutmeg Chapter in 1986, the dues were $10. In 1986, I received a four-page Newsletter that cost 22₵ in postage. In 2015, the dues for the Nutmeg Chapter are $10 and members receive a ten-page Newsletter that costs 49₵ to mail. After doing the newsletter for the past year, I would say it costs the Chapter around $8 - $9 a year to print and mail the Steering Column to members. Keep in mind that the Chapter also subsidizes the Thanks-Giving Dinner for members. The Nutmeg Chapter makes several Charitable Contributions every year from the Brooklyn Truck Show profits. We should continue to do these things that are traditional and unique to our Chapter. I know our government says inflation is low, however it seems everything costs more when you go to the store. That being said, the Chapter’s $10 dues are being stretched about as far as they can be. It is important that members pay their dues in a timely manner as the majority of the dues goes toward producing your Newsletter. You will note that this issue of the Newsletter has additional pages. Our printer is offering a one-time 30% discount on this printing. This savings allows us to include additional pages and additional postage and still keep within our budget.
