From a report cited by the Bloomberg article, “…according to a 2012 report by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. On the right was an abstract design, using similar colors. The curves of the ‘scattered blossoms’ visually seemed to follow the same lines of the ‘twirling vines’ of the traditional rug. Traditional rug patterns are classic style—either you love this style or not. As rooms are becoming less stiff and formal, a traditional pattern might not work, even if a person is visually drawn to it. In steps an abstract design for a modern look— new century, new fashion (for some). The colors are similar and visually both rugs share similar lines—even in the abstract. High Point Market was all about the story. The story of who one was through their rugs based on what the customer liked. As the andDesign Editor, I used the words fashion and style because when a rug comes into one’s home it is part of the layering of our style. The exciting moments at market weren’t about what was new in reference to color and pattern. The two exciting parts of the High Point Market were 1. How rug companies were using texture within a rug to give it new depth, a different visual appearance—Hand knotted is directional. With the play on texture, tufted rugs became directional. 2. Companies were telling a story with their showrooms—truly grasping the idea of Lifestyles. At least three rug companies were using Instagram giveaways to see which rugs the buyer liked the best. When one does this it is all about telling our own story. Capel Rugs showed how the rug comes all the way back to the story board. Here is one example of a collection of storyboards Capel had Danielle Batton, a recent graduate from NC State University in Fashion Textile Management and Textile Development, put together to show w w w. rugnewsanddesign.com what was coming. Capel then used it as inspiration to build their collection. Fashion and Style is a part of each consumer’s life. It is part of the story of our lives. The International Labor Organization has an age standard which is generally cited. Regrettably, neither the United States nor India has signed the agreement underlying the standard. India prohibits child labor under the age of 15. According to the Greenhouse article, “For non-farm work, (US) federal law sets 14 as the minimum age and restricts work for children under 16 to eight hours a day.” continued on page 16 Anji Mountain Dazzling, day-glow colors and kaleidoscopic patterns are the hallmark of the Atlas Collection. the ultra-plush pile is hand tufted using recycled cotton material, repurposed from the garment industry. homefires Shown here is grenadine hibiscus by the artist Judy Reed Silver. it's 22" x 34", and made of a polyester hooked construction. 14 Walking the Market is NOW online at www.WalkingtheMarket.com Q & A on Fashion, Style and Rugs Do you see a difference between Fashion and Style? Julie Dasher, Julie Dasher Rugs Kranthi Yarlagadda, KAS Rugs and Wendy Reiss, KAS Rugs estimates that there are 27 million individuals who are forced to work under threat of violence, without pay or hope of escape. There are more slaves in the world today than there were at any point in the life of the Roman Empire.” For perspective: India currently has about 18% of the world’s population, and about four times as many people as the US. If India had an 18% proportionate share of 27 millon bonded/slave labor, they would have about 4.9 million India’s proportionate share at 4.9 million slaves from 1.3 billion people (4.9/1300=0.4%) means slaves would be four tenths of one percent of India’s population. As to the quote above, a quick read on Wikipedia suggests that the Roman Empire had a population of 70 million or about 21% of the world’s population at the time, of which 1015% were slave/bonded labor or 710 million. So while there may be more slaves in the world today than in the Roman Empire, by the roughest of back of the envelope calculations: India, which is roughly the percentage size of the Roman empire in their respective time periods, has roughly half the number of bonded labor/slaves as did the Roman Empire. Nothing makes Bonded Labor/Slave Labor right, but I hate press releases that use casual throw away numbers for fund raising. There is a book just out about the preCivil War American Slave Trade which makes the point that the slaves worked in the South, but were collateralized to finance land acquisition for King Cotton, and the bonds sold in the North and Europe. Walking the Market is NOW online at www.WalkingtheMarket.com WE CARE: Caring for the Workers By Leslie Stroh Kalora/iDE Kalora Interiors International Inc. sells rugs in North America from their office in Canada. Gerry Dykman, CEO, started Kalora as a way to generate work for people he was trying to help. iDE was created as way to function as a NGO to work alongside Kalora. Both were successful and each has a life of its own, but the philosophies are similar. Kalora’s customers mostly care about selling rugs. Kalora’s management cares about the worker side, because at the start, they were the people that made the rugs. With iDE they were able to expand their horizons to clean water and handling human waste— two of the most fundamental problems in countries where people earn less than $2 a day. outs is the cornerstone of iDE Canada”. It was the beer brewers in London in the mid 1800’s working next to a water pump with cholera in the ground water, who didn’t get sick, that identified water as the danger it is. Clean water is a big thing. Proper excrement disposal is the other side of the coin. The 2008 occupation statistics in India show approximately 800,000 people worked as excrement removers. (There will of course be protests if they are put out of work because of an increase in toilets.-ed) Commemorating the founding of the World Toilet Organization, the United Nations unanimously adopted the date of November 19th as the United Installing the concrete ring for the toilet section. In 1933 the US Government paid people to build the outhouse, and iDE created independent entrepreneurs to sell latrines. Cambodia was the test market, and they were successful. When the project was scaled up in Cambodia 200,000 latrines were sold in 2.5 years, impacting 1 million people. The project has been expanded to 5 other countries. The Toilet Problem in India Owning a toilet, and using it, are two different cultural things. Culturally people in agricultural areas of India used the fields as their toilet. According to a report released in May of this year, by the World Health 22 Organization and Unicef, India’s open defecation rate is the highest in the world at 50%. Open defecation generates the conditions for water borne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea. In a Bloomberg article on the subject, they noted that diarrhea “costs India 600,000 lives annually … and exposes a third of the nation’s women to the risk of rape or sexual assault.” People don’t see bacteria, they don’t see viruses, but they do smell excrement in the house or near the house. It is that fundamental. Quoted in the article, a woman said “Locking us inside these booths with our own filth. I will never see how that is clean.” Walking down a public street in India is no Disneyland experience of extreme cleanliness. But inside a house, it is extremely clean. Absent modern medicine, cleanliness is staying alive. w w w. rugnewsanddesign.com The finished toilet with tile floor. Note that absent the four walls and ceiling it is functionally the same as a US home septic system. Walking the Market is NOW online at www.WalkingtheMarket.com The corporate structure is not important. A 501c3 charitable organization, a Non-Governmental Organization – NGO, and a for-profit company all have to pay their workers first, and save for a rainy day second. The added ingredient, improving the lives of your workers, is a matter of philosophy and organization. A classmate of mine, Bill Drayton, founded Ashoka in 1981, an association of Social Entrepreneurs. He recognized before anyone else that business and social responsibility had to go hand in hand. Toilet and cesspool septic system working demo. Note that the system creates an anaerobic bacterial environment. Nations World Toilet Day. Professor Jack Sim, an Ashoka fellow, founded the Base of (the) Pyramid (BoP) Hub as a way to bring economically viable solutions to the 4 billion people (out of 7.3 billion total) who live at the bottom of the economic pyramid. Kalora through iDE has the kind of economic model that works in a BoP economy. It is business driven, not a hand-out. Somebody makes it, somebody buys it. Both the seller and the buyer benefit from it. The World Toilet Organization partners with iDE and others to enable people to live healthier, safer lives. Rape, Sexual Assault and Privacy When women and girls use the fields as a toilet, they are vulnerable to sexual assault, and certainly have no privacy. Men, as my wife observes, can (and do-ed.) stand behind a tree. Sexual assault is, as it should be, a hot topic in India. From a purely analytical perspective, when attention is paid to aberrant behavior, reported incidence increases. India is paying attention, and there are more news stories, and more reported incidents. Before any of our readers tut-tut about India, note that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a report that said “One in five women in the US has been raped at some point in their lives, a survey (12,000 interviews) found, and most victims experienced sexual violence before age 25.” (source: Bloomberg) Total sexual misconduct (including rape) directed towards women was about 44%. As we went to press, sexual misconduct at MIT was reported as one in six. Corporate Social Responsibility There are two approaches to workers: taking advantage of them and taking care of them. NOVEMBER 2014 Increasingly, consumers are recognizing that issues such as sustainability, women’s rights, health and education are a focus for an integrating world. The rug industry confronts these issues in various ways, in various countries, with varying degrees of success. The gap between the rich and the poor is more apparent when you see it in the glare of the gap between the rich countries and the poor countries. It takes some looking, but there are a lot of very kind human beings working to close that gap, and many of them are not seeking publicity, but success. continued on page 27 H.M. This series will continue based on weaving time for PERSIAN knots. This month in cumulative hours 8 we will show 1-9 (-8) of 16 as 2362 hours. This series is a cooperative effort between Rug News andDesign, French Accents and one of its manufacturers. We are trying to explain in pictures and words how much human effort goes into making 9x12 knotted rugs in hours. I shop locally, primarily, so I go to the Decorative Center Houston and the Houston Design Center. For me, they have everything that I need. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE SOURCE FOR BUYING YOUR RUGS? My two favorite places are River Oaks Rugs and Rubin’s Custom Rugs. They both offer wonderful service. They are always professional and helpful. DO YOU SHOP ONLINE AT ALL, USE CATALOGS, OR DEAL DIRECTLY WITH SALESMEN? No, I do not shop online for rugs. My customers and I need to see, touch, and feel the rugs. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE STYLE OR FIBER OF AREA RUG? IF SO, WHY? I like neutral color nylon shag rugs with interesting textures and also animal pattern rugs. Sometimes my customers have their own rugs, often antique Persians that they have no intention of getting rid of, so I must work around those with the decor. DO CURRENT FASHION TRENDS OR STYLES ENTER YOUR DECISION OF BUYING RUGS FOR YOUR CLIENTS? Yes fashion of course influences me, as the showrooms I go to have the latest colors and trends with their samples and new items. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO HOW THE INDUSTRY CAN SERVE DESIGNERS BETTER? Essentially designers need local showrooms to have lots of samples and to be kept up to date. That is very important. So they built 2,309,329 outhouses by the final official tally, starting in 1933. They actually got about 300,000 people back to work by Christmas. Lyndon Baines Johnson, later known as LBJ, headed the effort in Texas, and Arthur Goldschmidt aka “Tex” headed the effort in West Virginia. Tex Goldschmidt had a dog called Sophie, and we had a dog called Tanner, and they walked/played together in the nearby park. In fact, this outhouse project was one of the most successful public health projects ever in the US. I visit The Decorative Center and the Houston Design Center, here in Houston. I also have attended High Point and Las Vegas. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE SOURCE FOR BUYING YOUR RUGS? I have a couple. I love Surya and Company C. DO YOU SHOP ONLINE AT ALL, USE CATALOGS, OR DEAL DIRECTLY WITH SALESMEN? Yes - all of the above. It really depends on the project, but I would say that I shop online and from catalogs 90% of the time. It's easy to get samples when you need them and they ship out right away. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE STYLE OR FIBER OF AREA RUG? Personally, I gravitate to more contemporary rugs. I really like large graphic patterns and bold colors. My favorite fiber is wool. I just love how lush and beautiful wool rugs can be. Especially a silk/wool combination. DO CURRENT FASHION TRENDS OR STYLES ENTER YOUR DECISION OF BUYING RUGS FOR YOUR CLIENTS? Honestly, I don't really think about that when I'm designing a room. I just try to find the right rug that will work for the space. Of course, I am probably influenced by trends somewhat based on things like popular colors and patterns of the moment. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO HOW THE INDUSTRY CAN SERVE DESIGNERS BETTER? In my personal experience, I think as a whole, the industry is doing a pretty good job. One of my favorite rug resources, Surya, has a great website, amazing catalogs and an excellent customer service department. Samples and orders ship out quickly and they have a great return policy. It also doesn't hurt that their prices are very good! WANT TO SEE MORE?
