The www.pray.nd.edu website is the university’s effort to create a prayer experience that combines written text with a beautiful music video of a sacred place on campus. You are invited to send your prayer requests that will be remembered at the Grotto. 2 Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg Summer 2012 Letter from the President Dear Fellow Irish Fans: Hope you are enjoying your summer and are thinking positive thoughts with regard to the upcoming football season which kicks off over Labor Day Weekend against Navy in Dublin, Ireland. Much very successful club activity has transpired since I last wrote as evidenced by the numerous project write-ups following this letter. I first want to thank student Brad Kunisky who sends, as he puts it, his “… greetings from the Emerald Isle”. I’m excited to report that the club won $500 in a competitive contest sponsored by the Notre Dame Senior Alumni Board because of our “Seniors Serving Seniors project “ and due to our reaching out to Lancaster County by including five Catholic schools in this year’s Bread of Life Food Drive or BOLD. Speaking of BOLD, through the leadership exhibited by Project Chairwoman Amber Simonic, we saw tremendous growth as the number of participating schools increased from 7 to 41! An incredible 6,568 pounds of food was collected of which 300 pounds were turned over to the Shalom House. I’m very proud of the fact that the club has been closely partnering with the Shalom House, a transitional home for abused and homeless women and their children located in the Allison Hill section of Harrisburg. Ms. Holly O’Hara, a Notre Dame sophomore from Troy, Michigan, is interning at the Shalom House as a part of our club’s participation in the Sumer Service Learning Program. Our UND Celebration Dinner was a big success as we heard from Notre Dame Law Professor Jay Tidmarsh who reported back to us on important university events. Three cheers go out to Joe Massa who was awarded the “Barry Ryan Award” for 10 years of distinguished service. Derek Eichenberger received the “Spark Plug Award” for recent distinguished service. Our Communion/Brunch was completely revamped to make it a much more meaningful event. We covered each of the Six C’s: Catholic Spirituality, Camaraderie, Current Students, Community Service, Continuing Education and Communication. Kudos to Rose Ann Carr for her efforts. Looking forward, the club will be raffling off two tickets and a hotel room in South Bend for the Pittsburgh game and is attempting to fill a second bus for the Wake Forest game in South Bend. As always, I look forward to your comments and suggestions through [email protected] or (717) 732-8562. Onward to Victory! A great turnout for a very well-managed project! 6 Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg Summer 2012 Bread of Life Food Drive BOLD Experiences Incredible Growth! The Bread of Life Food Drive (BOLD) was very successful given the fact that the number of schools participating skyrocketed from 7 to 41! Partnering with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (Food Bank) which circulated and collected barrels for food placement, a total of 6,568 pounds of food representing approximately 13,000 food items were collected!!! The club owes a debt of gratitude to Project Chairwoman Amber Simonic who grew the number of participating schools by reaching out to the public schools in Dauphin and Cumberland Counties and Catholic schools in Lancaster County. The top three schools in terms of pounds of food collected is as follows: 1st Place – Sacred Heart of Jesus Elementary School in Lancaster County 2nd Place – Lawnton Elementary School in Dauphin County 3rd Place – Chambers Hill Elementary School in Dauphin County Representatives from the Sacred Heart of Jesus Elementary School were presented with a plaque and revolving trophy at the club’s UND Celebration dinner. The food collected will be distributed by the Food Bank to various local food banks. 300 pounds of food was distributed to the Shalom House for homeless and abused women. Club members plus numerous friends and volunteers met at the Food Bank on May 5th and May 12, 2012 to unpack, sort and shelve the food items collected from the schools and the US Post Office Letter Carriers. A total of 39 persons attended the May 5, 2012 event! Basketball coach Mike Brey was the guest speaker at awards dinner. Alumni Association Dolly Duffy delivering address at dinner. Club Nominated for “Club of the Year” Award We Win Two Awards! Club President Jack Wright represented the club at the annual Alumni Senate Meeting held on the Notre Dame Campus on April 19-20. The club was honored by being nominated for the Club of The Year Award for clubs in the “B” Category which is based on the number of alumni living in our geographic area. Unfortunately, we did not receive the award as competition among nearly a dozen nominees was very strong. But, as they say in Hollywood, it was an honor to have been nominated! Seven Heisman Trophy Winners – No school has more! Based on the quality and quantity of our numerous club projects, we received the following awards: • Program Excellence • Special Citation The meeting was an opportunity to meet other club leaders and learn what opportunities are available to lend themselves to improved club practices. The idea of holding a Bread of Life Food Drive came from an earlier Alumni Senate following a presentation given by members of the Staten Island Club. All in favor, say “Aye”. Barry Ryan, Region 12 Director, chaired a very informative meeting attended by representatives from each of the clubs located in his geographic area. Three admirers of the great coach Knute Rockne. 9 We were very excited that our good friends from Gettysburg once again won Club of the Year for their alumni category. Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg Summer 2012 Mike McCoy Ministries The club was honored to have former Notre Dame and Green Bay Packer lineman Mike McCoy give his anti drug and alcohol presentations between March 20-23 to 1,805 students from the following six local Catholic schools: • • • • • • Mike McCoy delivering address. St. Catherine Laboure School Holy Name of Jesus School St. Theresa School St. Patrick School Bishop McDevitt High School Trinity High School Mike delivers a faith-based message of hope and encouragement to students in Catholic schools that helps them be morally focused, overcome challenges and deal with peer pressure to develop self-confidence. Mike’s lectures were very well received by the students and school personnel. Students listed the problems they were experiencing on index cards with their names. Depending on the nature of the problems, the cards were turned over to the schools’ principals for follow-up which included getting the students the help that many so sorely need. Mike has intervened to help prevent suicides and fight drug addiction. Three cheers to Project Chairman Bill Stains who established the lectures with the schools and accompanied Mike at each school. The project received great publicity as evidenced by a picture which was printed in the Patriot-News on May 13, 2012. The picture shows Mr. McCoy speaking before a group of students from St. Patrick School in Carlisle. The club’s thanks go out to Barry and Jacquie Ryan who hosted Mike and club officers/directors at their beautiful home for dinner the evening before the first lecture. Following two football game bus trips last year, the club conducted its first basketball game bus trip in a long time with a visit to the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on February 18, 2012. Although we were down early, the Irish roared back for a big win! The Irish defeated the Villanova Wildcats 74-70 in an overtime thriller capping a stunning comeback after being down at one juncture by 20 points. Club members and friends enjoyed the luxury of viewing the game from a private box! Project Chairman Mike Rozman did a great job managing the trip which included a stop in Lancaster to pick up our good friends from that great county. John Duggan along with Project Chairman Mike Rozman and his wife Kim enjoying the exciting game. All had great fun playing a basketball trivia game and listening to good Irish music. The trip made a profit of about $300 which will be used to help fund other club projects. Our good friends from Lancaster enjoying themselves. Pre-game socializing with ND Club of Philadelphia members. Lou De Lutis and Derek Eichenberger say Irish #1! 12 Rick and Terri Martini along with Bill Stains making a good point! Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg Summer 2012 Seniors Serving Seniors As pointed out in the last newsletter, the club kicked off its Seniors Serving Seniors project in response to the Notre Dame Senior Alumni Board’s request for Senior Challenge Grant proposals. On a monthly basis, club members have been volunteering their services at the “Emeritus at Harrisburg” assisted living care facility located at 3560 N. Progress Avenue, Harrisburg. Joe Massa calling out bingo numbers… During the second Sundays of each month, we have been running a bingo game for seniors and distributing inexpensive Notre Dame items to the winners. The seniors very much enjoy playing bingo and appreciate our efforts. Rosemarie Massa with bingo participants. Amber Simonic takes her turn at calling out the numbers. All Irish fans had fun….. Adopt a Highway Project Under the very able leadership of Dan Cassidy, the club initiated this new project on May 19, 2012. Several members joined Dan and picked up much trash at our assigned location of the Manada Hill/Hershey interchange off Interstate 81. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation placed two signs listing our club name so that the numerous travelers motoring along this very busy roadway will view our club name and learn of this important project. 13 Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg Summer 2012 Student Update: Bradley Kunisky “Greetings from the Emerald Isle! I am Bradley Kunisky from Harrisburg and I am currently studying in Ireland as a part of Notre Dame’s Dublin Study abroad program. I’ve been asked to share my experience with friends in the Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg. Notre Dame prides itself on offering the highest quality opportunities to its students in all aspects university life, whether it spiritual guidance, rigorous academics, or nationally competitive athletic teams. After five months here, I can say that the same holds true for the study abroad opportunities offered by Notre Dame. When I started at ND, I knew that I wanted to study abroad, but did not have any specific locations in mind. When it came time to choose a destination, I thought – What could be cooler than being a Notre Dame student studying in Ireland? Nothing. The idea of being a part of the Fighting Irish in Ireland, was too great to pass up! From the very first day, upon meeting the other 40 students in the program and the delightful Dublin program staff, I knew that I had made a great choice. The Dublin program’s nerve center is located at the O’Connell House, the former residence of Daniel O’Connell, a famous Irish Catholic political leader from the early 19th century. The O’Connell House has offices for the staff, a classroom, a library, a chapel and serves as the primary hub for any Notre Dame activity in Dublin. The program is led by Kevin Whelan, a renowned Irish historian and close friends with, seemingly, every person in all of Ireland. Over the course of the semester, I have had the opportunity to travel to many different countries, to experience new tastes, languages, and cultures, and to see the world, especially the U.S., from a whole new perspective. My family has taken this opportunity as well, visiting Ireland and Italy in April! I have come to adore the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the Irish people and their fondness of the “craic” (light-hearted, friendly banter). I learned a few things that I never could have expected, like how to survive an attack from an angry ram. One of the most rewarding parts of studying abroad is getting to know new people, including other Notre Dame students in the program. Our Dublin group has developed a strong bond and we will certainly remain close with one another when we return to campus in the fall. As our semester quickly comes to a close, and the anticipation for the Navy game builds, one feeling rings true for all of us in Dublin: We don’t want to leave! When I return to campus this fall, it will be my senior year at Notre Dame. It is all going by so fast and I am so thankful for the opportunities I have had as a student here. I could not have asked for a better college experience, and studying in Dublin, Ireland was the icing on the cake!” ND Dublin: Full program. 14 Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg Summer 2012 The Roda’s Trip to ND vs. USC Raffle Winners “We had a wonderful weekend at Notre Dame after winning the raffle for the USC game. Yes, the game itself was a crushing disappointment, especially after the tremendous build up, but the weather was perfect and the atmosphere on campus electric. Our three teenage sons, big fans all, especially enjoyed the Players’ Walk. We tailgated with Jane and Michael Schreder, our good friends from Lancaster whose son is a sophomore and who also are members of the ND Club of Harrisburg. The Comfort Suites was terrific and nicely accommodated all 5 of us. Thanks to all involved for giving our family a very memorable trip!” 15 Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg Summer 2012 Bat for the Cure Harrisburg Club Hits a Home Run! Joe Massa being interviewed on the JumboTron prior to the game’s start. Joe Massa and Jack Wright managed our club’s Bat For The Cure table at the June 26, 2012 Harrisburg Senator’s game on City Island. Joe Massa and Jack Wright ham it up with the autographed bat which was later raffled-off. They distributed literature entitled, “Strike Out Prostate Cancer Today!” while holding a raffle of a bat autographed by players on the Senators’ team. The club was honored as one of the “Community Organizations of the Game”. Joe Massa was interviewed on the radio both before and during the game and he threw out the first pitch: a Strike!!! Future stars of tomorrow signing up for autographed bat. 16 Joe Massa being interviewed yet again, this time during the game. Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg Summer 2012 Bat for the Cure York Strikes Out Prostate Cancer! Tom Godfrey, Jr. and daughter Abbey focus in with loveable mascot DownTown! Our good friend Tom Godfrey, Jr. and wife Nancy along with children Chris and Abbey did a great job representing the club on June 24, 2012 in York at the Revolution baseball game! Tom reports that attendance was 5,478 and that the event “… was a great experience for myself and my family especially my children”. He noted that many women took our prostate cancer awareness literature and promised to pass it along to their husbands. The lucky winner of the drawing for the autographed bat was Hannah Smith of Dover, PA who attended the game with her father. The club’s sincere thanks go out to the Godfrey family for the great job they did in York! The Godreys well represented the club in York. Chris Godfrey pulls the winning ticket for the team autographed bat. 17 Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg In Other News... Summer 2012 Congratulations!
