Then they all decided that being named after a flower was the coolest and they wanted to change their names to flowers, Marigold, Carnation and Lily of the Valley. We made flower pictures by gluing pasta. We wrote names on nametags and counted letters in everyone’s name. All left with a goody bag filled with crayons, coloring book and a sucker, hopefully to practice writing their names! Come join us each Friday at 10 a.m. Storytime started out good Friday at the Maben Public Library. We had eight children to attend. We read a story about Chrysanthemum, a little mouse who started school. She was picked on because her name was too long and she was named after a flower. They picked on her every day until a music teacher started. Her name was Mrs. Twinkle. All of the special moments that constitute the life of the family and the community, have been celebrated and remembered in the life of a church. And beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, the family and friends of First Baptist Church of Eupora will come together to celebrate 125 years of “doing life together as a community of faith.” “We are really excited about the upcoming Celebration Day,” said Lesa Hardin, coordinator for the 125th A n n i v e r s a r y Celebration. “Many former music leaders, youth ministers and staff members will be in attendance as well as their families. It will be a wonderful day honoring the past and what God has done through this church family over Editorial roundup Watch out for deer The recent snap in cool weather has been a welcome change from the long, hot summer that’s typical of the Delta. But as the temperatures drop and as deer hunting and mating seasons approach, that also means that there will be more of the animals moving around near roads and highways. The chance of hitting a deer in Mississippi, according to data released today by the State Farm insurance company, is about double the national average. The state currently ranks eighth in the nation in vehicle-deer collisions — thankfully two spots better than the year before. Hitting a deer is expensive and dangerous. The average cost nationally is more than $4,100, and there’s also the heightened risk of losing control of a vehicle after a collision. So start keeping your eyes peeled. The contestants, already nervous, are asked to respond on the spot and in a few seconds to questions with which even seasoned politicians might struggle. She said, rightly in our opinion, that Davis was elected to do a secular job and that includes following the rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court, which has legalized gay marriage nationwide. The majority in this heavily conservative state might disagree with Roberts, and that’s OK. The point here is that Mississippi has a national reputation of being a place where thinking is monolithic, that dissenting opinions are discouraged, that those who disagree with the majority are often cowed into silence. Roberts shot a big hole in that stereotype by showing, in front of a national TV audience, that you can proudly represent Mississippi Subscriptions ed so much to the church and it is important to reflect on their work for God.” Rev. Travis Gray said the day will begin at 10 a.m. for a special time “to gather to worship the Lord in His sanctuary.” “There will be a time to reflect on history, sing praise to our Savior, and anticipate what God has in store for our future,” Gray said. “Our goal is to recognize how blessed we are to be part of the family of God here at FBC Eupora and in His eternal kingdom.” After the service, Gray and still have your own opinions. We want God’s home to be full, but that is only the beginning. Our prayer is that we “The Bees, the Flowers, Jesus, Ancient Tigers, Poseidon, Adam and Eve,” and The Post described it as “20 brief, cynical lines on the absurdity of desire.” We read it and couldn’t make much sense of it — perhaps a good sign for its poetic value that those of uncultured taste such as ours found no appreciation of it. We take some solace, though, in the fact that the overseers of America’s snootiest literary journals saw nothing special about the poem either — until they thought it was written by someone with an ethnic background. The writer himself, whom we’ll refer to as Chou-Hudson, wrote that, “If indeed this is one of the best American poems of 2015, it took quite a bit of effort to get it into print, but I’m nothing if not persistent.” Our staff Charlie Smith Publisher EnterpriseTocsin Joseph C. Approximately 15 to 20 people were at the scene within minutes. Upon arrival at the scene, volunteers found a trailer with approximately five of the large bales of hay on fire. Volunteer Jack Hendricks stated that the cause of the fire was from a spark that was caused from a tire rubbing through a metal support on the trailer. Volunteer Ricky Johnson says that it took about 45 minutes to get the fire under control. Constitution Week Mayor Pete Fortner Jr. has proclaimed the week of Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week in the city of Eupora ad urges all citizens to pay special attention during that week to our Federal Constitution and the advantage of American citizenship. Our Founding Fathers in order to secure blessing of liberty for themselves and their posterity did ordain and establish a constitution for the United States of America, so as we observe the 203rd anniversary of its signing, let’s remember and celebrate the independence guaranteed to us, the American people. Aldermen adopt FY 2016 budget www.websterprogresstimes.com By Russell Hood The Webster ProgressTimes The Eupora Board of Aldermen adopted the new city budget during its Sept. 8 meeting. The budget for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2016, was adopted with no discussion other than City Clerk Gail Newton reminding aldermen that no one objected to it during a budget and tax levy public hearing on Aug. 26. Millage will remain at 24 in the tax levy resolution for FY 2016 adopted the same date. Enforcement of the city blight ordinance was back on the agenda. On Aug. 3, the board authorized city attorney Jacqueline Meek to proceed with the conclusion of the blight ordinance for the demolition of houses owned by Antionette Goins at 1485 Adams Ave. and George Marshall at 304 Noel St. That motion was also to accept a quote from Ken Knight for demolition and asbestos inspection of those houses to be determined by the city attorney. Knight’s quote was approximately $1,500 per house for demolition, $650 for asbestos inspection and approximately $2,000 for asbestos removal, according to what is found, for an approximate total of $4,150 per house. Last week, Meek asked permission to start the legal process over to ensure that everything was done “perfectly right.” She specifically referred to Goins, who is of Calhoun City, stating she was not sure if Goins understood that the house on Adams would be torn down at her expense. After more discussion, the board directed Meek to proceed with sending Goins a certified letter 7 informing her that the house will be torn down. No Cleanup Plan Another blight matter was also on the agenda — a cleanup plan for a vacant house at 208 S. Dunn owned by Joyce and Marvin Hendrix. They previously agreed to submit a progress report for tearing it down to the board by August. However, Burchfield told the board then that they could not attend the Aug. 3 meeting because of a family emergency. Without opposition, the item was tabled until the next regular meeting. The Hendrixes were not at last week’s meeting either and apparently had still not submitted a cleanup plan, according to the discussion. “I cannot tell where there is any activity going on,” Gibson said about the house. The matter was tabled again. Rezoning Request Governor A. Mays was back before the board concerning a rezoning request of his that the board denied July 6. Mays wanted to rezone Westwood lots 19, 20 and 21 from residential to commercial for a Laundromat. After listening to citizen concerns at a public meeting beforehand, the board voted to deny the request. At the rezoning hearing, Patricia Evans and Barbara King of Westwood Drive presented an unsigned letter of opposition. They signed the letter in the boardroom before leaving and agreed to gather more signatures before the next meeting. However, neither apparently ever presented a copy of the letter with more signatures since then, according to last week’s discussion after Mays inquired about it. “We took action based on input from people who showed up,” Jerry Gary (at-large) told Mays. Robert Gibbs (Ward 4) also replied, “The community said they didn’t want commercial activity in that residential area.” Mays asked about rezoning Lot 20 only, and Gary told him he could repetition to rezone that lot by obtaining a rezoning request form. The city previously approved the rezoning of Westwood Lot 18 for Mays Fence Variance, Tax Deed Birttie Carter appeared before the board to discuss a fence variance at her residence at 20 W. Figgatt. After some discussion, the board tabled the matter pending a property survey from Carter. She also complained about the condition of the street, saying it needs to be overlaid. Thomas Evans appeared before the board regarding a tax deed. Gary, who was presiding in the absence of Mayor Dan Burchfield, asked that the board consider going into executive session on the issue because of “potential litigation.” The board did vote to go into executive session, returning to open session about 20 minutes later and voting to table the matter. The board tabled a request from Water Superintendent Jimmy Hester regarding water billing on rental property, “especially on Main Street.” Referring to rental property that has been divided and is on one meter, Hester said, “I would like to get that changed. I think people who own the buildings should be responsible for the bills. Meek said an ordinance would need to be prepared for such a change and the matter was tabled. 4-Wheelers Aldermen Junior Shaw expressed concerns from himself and others in Ward 1 about loud music, 911 addresses and four-wheelers. He said people were playing loud music in their cars and waking people up at night in the Churchill area. Police Chief Gregg said the police department would pick up enforcement of the noise ordinance and that he would advise officers to patrol more often on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Shaw also said many people still have their old address posted instead of their 911 address . Hunter urged people who have not posted their correct 911 address to do so, and said he would talk to 911 Director Jimmy McLemore about the matter. Referring to people riding four-wheelers in Churchill and parking in people’s yards, Shaw said, “I almost hit a youngster on one this summer.” Hugh Gibson (Ward 3) related similar reports of some young people riding a miniature off-road vehicle in his neighborhood, stating that some motorists had nearly hit them. “We’re concerned about the safety of unauthorized vehicles operating on city streets,“ Hunter said. He cautioned parents about this, and said the police department can have such unauthorized vehicles towed if they are being operated unsafely. Illegal Dumping Hunter said some illegal dumping had occurred on Adams Avenue where the Street Department had just replaced a culvert. The police department was working on identifying the culprits, he said, adding that he believed NEED PLUMBING SUPPLIES? Hunter also referred to a number of burglaries committed in the city last month. He encouraged all residents to keep watch in their neighborhood and report any suspicious people. The monthly police report for August shows three residential burglaries at Early Grove Apartments, Adams Avenue and West Clark Avenue, and three auto burglaries at Colonial Apartments, Dunn Street and Adams Avenue. Howard Rumore (Ward 2), as he had at a previous meeting, voiced his concerns about people swimming between the floating dock and the boat ramp at Whites Creek Lake. Rumore said he is worried someone is going to get hurt, and asked that the float- ing dock be moved further away from the ramp. Other Action In other business, the board: • approved the transfer of the fire department’s Engine 392 to the Sabougla Fire Department. The fire truck was declared surplus after the city received a new truck this summer. • voted to allow First United Methodist Church to make sidewalk improvements at the church’s expense. • tabled for a second time the purchase of radio-read meters and a proposed smoke-free air ordinance. • accepted an American flag from representatives of the Old Choctaw County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. • set a special-called meeting for 5 p.m. Sept. 28. MSU falls just short against SEC rival LSU, 21-19 From school reports STARKVILLE — No. 14 LSU (1-0, 1-0 SEC) beat No. 25 Mississippi State (1-1, 0-1) 21-19 on Saturday night in Starkville to open the 2015 S o u t h e a s t e r n Conference season. MSU's senior quarterback Dak Prescott completed 34-of-52 passes for 335 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for one. But MSU fell just short of keeping up with LSU and its sophomore running back Leonard Fournette, who amassed 159 yards on the ground including all three of the Tigers' touchdowns. The Tigers dominated the first half, going into the locker room up 14-3, but the Bulldogs came out strong in the second half, stopping LSU on its first drive with a three-and-out and following that up with its second field goal. MSU went on to score two touchdowns – one a 5yard pass from Prescott to junior receiver De’Runnya Wilson and the other a 1-yard run by Prescott – as the MSU offense found its rhythm. Head coach Dan Mullen said they didn’t change the playcalling at the half, just the mindset. “I told our team, 'Relax. Take a deep breath',” he said. “That was our halftime adjustment.” With 1:31 left to play and LSU leading by the eventual final score of 21-19, the Bulldogs got the ball and started a drive inside their own 20, advancing toward LSU's side of the field quickly. With three seconds left, MSU's 52-yard field goal attempt fell just short, giving LSU the victo- ry. “Two pretty good football teams battling right there,” Mullen said. “They made one more play than we did." Mississippi State hosts Northwestern State next Saturday at 3 p.m. CT. The game will be televised by the SEC Network. Not a F I S H D AY ! Subscriber? IT’S TIME TO STOCK YOUR POND! "Our kids were so focused at halftime," East Webster head coach Doug Wilson. "They were excited. It didn't feel like they were behind. The were very confident and that helped us in the second half." The Wolverines used that confidence to overcome a 13-7 halftime deficit on the way to posting a 21-13 win over the Hilltoppers of Houston on Friday night. "Their (Houston's) defense will match any defense we will face the rest of the year as far as speed is concerned," Wilson said. "It was good for us to face that. We made the corrections we needed to make at the half." Houston held a 7-0 lead after one quarter of play, before Chase Keller scored on a 16yard run and Tyler Cosby booted the point after to make it 7-7. Houston regained the lead at 13-7 just before the half. After a scoreless third quarter that saw both teams jockey for field position, East Wester took the lead on a 60yard pass from Jack Wilson to Shye Link. Cosby's kick gave EW the lead for good at 1413. "It was a third and 15 and we were in a bad situation," coach Wilson said "He (Link) caught it and made a little move. The defender was right there on him, but he was able to get away. It just worked out." The EW defense shut down the Houston offense, giving East Webster the ball back. The Wolverines scored late in the game on a 16yard run by Jack Wilson. The kick made it 21-13. Houston had a late shot at tying the game, but came up short. Wilson led East Webster with 100 rushing yards on 22 carries, while Keller had 17 carries for 79 yards. Wilson was 2-for-9 passing for 78 yards, with Link making one catch and Luke Wilson grabbing one for 18 yards. "Cosby was the hero for us," coach Wilson said. "He did a good job of keeping them in bad field position. It made a difference." John Wofford Williams recorded 13 tackles for the winners, while Draper Nason had 10 and Luke Wilson seven. Isaac Patterson knocked down a pair of passes for EW in key situations. Next up for East Webster is Homecoming this week with Ray Brooks paying a visit. The Lady Wolverines nipped Houston 7-6 on Thursday, then used a three-run homer off the bat of Kerrigan Clark in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 15-12 win over Neshoba Central on Monday. East Webster beat Houston on Thursday, then downed Amory 40 and Houston 10-4 on Saturday, before beating the Lady Rockets — the two-time defending MHSAA Class 6A/5A State champions. EW is set to visit Grenada on Thursday, before visiting Winona on Sept. 22 and hosting Eupora on Sept. 24. Neshoba Central struck for six runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 11-3 lead over the Lady Wolverines, before EW scored four in the bot- tom of the sixth and four more in the seventh to tie the game. After the Lady Rockets scored a run in the top of the eighth to take the 12-11 lead, Bailie Springfield tied the game with a solo homer to left, setting up Clark's game-winning heroics. Clark had two homers and two singles and drove in seven runs to lead the winners at the plate, while Springfield belted a pair of homers and drove in four runs. Jennah Pate, Jessi Reed and Jessica Aron had two hits each for the winners, while Sydney Dewberry, Krista Ellis, Emily Nason, and Jessica Davis each singled for EW. East Webster built up a 6-1 lead against Houston last Thursday before the Lady Hilltoppers scored twice in the sixth and three times in the top of the seventh to tie the game. A walk to Springfield and singles by Pate and Jessica Davis loaded the bases for Clark, who singled to center to drive in the winning run. Eagles hope to keep hanging up wins heading into region play www.websterprogresstimes.com 11 Wednesday, September 16, 2015 By Austin Bishop Webster Progress Times It's time to set new goals. That's the way firstyear Eupora High School head football coach Stephen Edwards is approaching the rest of the season. Going into the 2015 campaign Edwards had hopes of his team being at least 4-2 heading into Region 4-2A play. After winning their first four games of the season, including a 22-7 win over rival Choctaw County last Friday, the Eagles have achieved that goal. Now Edwards said it is time to move forward. "Now we need to set more goals," he said. "We have reached the goal I had set at the beginning of the season — we are there. But you have to keep pushing forward. We want to make the playoffs and go as far as we can, but we also want to keep playing well heading into (region) play. "We just need to play our very best and let the chips fall where they may," he said. "Our team has had a good attitude and we need to keep that." EHS is set to host J.Z. George this Friday and Houston on Sept. 25, before visiting Okolona on Oct. 2 to open league play. "I was pleased with our effort," Edwards said. "i thought we played hard. Both teams played extremely hard. Their (Choctaw County's) record is deceiving. They could have easily been 21 (before the Eupora game)." Dylan Patrick on the defensive stop for Eupora Pictures courtesy of Richard Love of Ballshotz Tanner Knight at quarterback for the Eagles Choctaw County, now 0-4 on the season, took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Jalen Esters scored on a 1-yard run and David Ramirez booted the point after. Eupora, 4-0 on the season, took an 8-7 lead at the half thanks to a 71yard punt return by Al Dumas. A botched snap on the extra point attempt following score, led Dumas to throwing to Carson Gunn for the two-point conversion. "That was really a big play," Edwards said of the punt return. "They had shut us down offensively. We had 52 yards of offense (in the first half) and 45 yards of penalties." A 69-yard pass play from Tanner Knight to Corson Gunn set up the Eagles' first touchdown of the second-half as Claude Herard scored on a 7-yard run. "We had play-action on first down and we threw 75th Anniversary 1940-2015 Joe H. Choctaw County moved the ball into Eupora's territory a couple times, but really never had a prime chance to tie the game. Eupora then put it away with a 35-yard run by Victor Goldman in the fourth quarter. "Our defense played extremely well again," Edwards said. "We have given up two touchdowns in four ballgames. When you are doing that, you give yourself a chance to win." Knight hit on 5-of-10 passes for 106 yards with Corson Gunn catching two for 80, Lamarcus Caradine catching two for 20 and Herard catching one for six yards. Goldman rushed for 112 yards on 12 carries, while Herard had four attempts for 21 yards and Dumas had six carries for 21 yards Carson Gunn led the defense with 12 tackles, while Merrill had 11, Herard six and Carradine had four pass break ups. Lady Eagles softball team still flying high www.websterprogresstimes.com By Austin Bishop Webster Progress Times The Eupora High School slow-pitch softball team ran its record to 13-1 on the season with four wins last week. After defeating Grenada 12-2 on Tuesday and Philadelphia 7-6 on Thursday in a thriller, the Lady Eagles swept Caledonia (14-0) and Columbus (10-7) in the Houston Tournament on Saturday. This week EHS was set to host Hatley on Tuesday and Winona on Thursday, before taking on Northeast Lauderdale, Neshoba Central, and Newton County in a tournament in Meridian on Saturday. The win over Philadelphia was a back-and-forth affair with the Lady Tornadoes going up 3-1, before Eupora hit for four runs in the bottom of the fourth. However PHS tied the game with a two-spot in the sixth, forcing extra innings. After the Lady Tornadoes scored one in the top of the ninth, Eupora countered with two in the bottom of the inning to take the win. After an error, a single by Savannah Kilpatrick, and an intentional walk loaded the bases with nobody out, Delta Newman tied the game with a single to center, scoring Marlee Ray. Haley Farley then delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Kilpatrick and gave the Lady Eagles the win. Courtney Hatcher blasted a homer for EHS in the game and was also walked three times, while Newman, Alley Reed, and Khylar Cain had two hits each. Also picking up hits for the winners were Ray, Haylee McCrory, Kylie Richardson, and Emily Littlejohn. Hatcher was the winning pitcher. Eupora scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth on the way to the blowout 10-run rule win over Grenada. Hatcher belted a double and single, drove in two runs and scored three others to lead the Lady Eagles offensively, while Reed and Richardson had two hits each and Farley popped a double. Kilpatrick, Littlejohn and McCrory had a hit each for EHS, while Reed and Littlejohn drove in two runs each. Newman walked three times and scored twice. Hatcher was the winning pitcher, allowing just two earned runs. No individual stats were available on the Caledonia and Columbus games by deadline. Slow start costs Holmes in 40-14 North Divison loss From School Reports Costly mistakes early in the contest helped the Itawamba Community College Indians jump ahead of the Holmes Community College Bulldogs in the first quarter, and the Bulldogs then played from behind the remainder of the game and fell 40-14 on Thursday night. With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the North Division. Holmes hosts East Central Community College in a Military Appreciation Game Thursday at 7 in Grenada. You can listen on the Bulldog Football Network or watch live at www.holmesccmedia.co m. The Bulldogs got the ball to start the game, but fumbled at their own 35, and the Indians scooped it up and returned it all the way to the three yard line before the Indians scored on a 3-yard run. The extra point was good, and ICC led 7-0 with 12:42 left in the first quarter. After a 17-yard punt, the Indians played on a short field from the Holmes 39. The Indians drove down to the five yard line before the Bulldogs forced the Indians to attempt a 22yard field goal which was good with 5:14 left to play in the first quarter. The Bulldogs fumbled the ball once again at the Indian 43. Itawamba drove the rest of the first quarter before scoring from five yards out early in the second quarter. The extra point was good, and Itawamba led 17-0 with 14:55 left in the first half. Holmes got on the scoreboard late in the first half when Aquindus THE NEW Henson broke free from 18 yards out. Sow perennial flowers in the fall www.websterprogresstimes.com 13 Storytime fun By Lelia Kelly and David Nagel Extension Horticulture Specialists Fourteen children visited the Webster County Library on Sept. 9. They loved the time seeing their friends and playing with puzzles and on the computer before listening to the story. Ms. Pat led them in singing “Looby Lou” and “Three Little Ducks” before she read “Six Little Ducks” using the storyboard. After the story, everyone assembled at the tables to make duck puppets. Storytime is each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Friends of the Library Local author Rhonda Booth was guest speaker at Friends of Webster Library on Sept. 14. She shared her new book “Popcorn Millie Meets Roze Tillie,” a story about a little girl dealing with the loss of a loved one. Visiting with Booth are Anna Knight and Jackie Christopher. Box Sow seeds of most perennial wildflowers, especially spring and early summer bloomers, in the fall from September through November. They are naturally adapted to and benefit from fall rains and cold winter soils. Rather than use packaged mixes of wildflower seeds, it is generally more satisfactory to sow single species of wildflowers adapted to an area, or mix several recommended ones together for a specific effect. Continue to seed coldhardy perennial and biennial flowers directly into prepared beds. Good choices for fall sowing would be hollyhock, foxglove, purple coneflower, rudbeckia, dianthus, hesperis and lunaria. Saving Seed Gather the dried flower heads of zinnias, cosmos, marigolds and Mexican sunflowers (Tithonia rotundifolia), and store the seeds in a cool, dry place. Sow these in the spring for next year’s cutting garden. Houseplants If you gave your plants a summer vacation outside, get ready to bring them back indoors as the Wednesday, September 16, 2015 first frost approaches. Reduce watering, and allow the containers to dry out a bit. Examine them carefully to remove any hitchhikers (such as lizards and bugs), and then bring the plants inside. Autumn Equinox Wednesday, Sept. 23, is the fall equinox, when the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night are nearly equal. This date typically signifies the end of summer and the beginning of fall. Now is the time for setting out this season’s annuals, grooming flowerbeds, digging holes for bulbs, and planting trees and shrubs. But the most important thing is taking some time from our hectic schedules to get outside to enjoy the colors, fragrances and flavors of our gardens, fields and forests. Dying trees Armillaria root rot is showing up in many woody landscapes during this drought. This fungus attacks many landscape trees and can cause death when other factors stress trees. Tree leaves tend to turn brown rapidly with no differences in young or old limbs. More information can be found at http://msucares.com/law n/tree_diseases/414armi llaria.html Vegetables Young plants have limited root systems. Be sure to irrigate newly set out transplants and newly emerged seedlings. Peanut grows should be checking for maturity. Most peanuts are now in the pod filling stage and water is critical for highquality nuts. Those who enjoy boiled peanuts should harvest before the mesocarp colors. The mesocarp is the layer of pod underneath the skin (exocarp) and the seed coat on the peanut seed, Boiling peanuts should be white or very light yellow. Peanuts for roasting should have brown or black mesocarp. Since peanuts don’t fower once, but many times, there will be nuts in many stages of maturity on the same plant. Pods nearer the plant’s crown are generally more mature than those on the branches. Gardeners who raise green onions should be getting the seed bed ready and acquiring seed now. Several cultivars (called bunching onions) are designed for green onion production that do not make bulbs. Gardeners can also plant long-day onions that will remain vegetative until May. These can be planted anytime from late September until January. One way to have your green onions and bulbs too is to sow seeds in October of short-day onions like granex 33, creole, Bermuda or Texas Sweet about 1 inch apart in 4- to 6-inch rows. Thin every other onion plant when they grow large enough to use as green onions until the final stand is a plant every 4 to 6 inches. These will start bulbs in March and be ready for harvest in June. Another alternative is to sew chives once. Chives are perennial and will last years if they are protected from temperatures below 25. ating was a public nuisance. Bobby McMullen told the Eupora Board of Aldermen in August 2014 that he feared for his family’s safety because of fights there in which guns and knives were being pulled, and said beer bottles were being thrown in his yard from that location. “I’m afraid they’re going to start shooting,” McMullen said then. “I’m concerned about my grandchildren.” Hunter told the board during the meeting that Larry McMillian was operating out of a shed in a vacant lot behind his residence. He was arrested later that month for possession of beer and possession of whiskey, pleaded guilty to both charges and was fined. More recently, Hunter said city and county officers assisted state Alcoholic Beverage Control agents during a search of the property last week. This resulted in a pending charge against Larry McMillian of possession of alcohol in a dry county. Continued from page 1 one needs me. Thanks again for your support.” Box, who had served as a Mathiston patrolman for years, fills the vacancy created by the July 31 retirement of Chief Roger Miller. Mayor Jimmy Carden swore Box in Monday night. (Right) Box (center) with Mathiston Alderman Earl Frost, Carden, and aldermen Lavelle McAlpin and Jeff Haney Bond pickup truck,” Hunter said. Larry McMillian lived at the address with his mother. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was immediately called and responded, with its crime scene unit processing the scene. Sheriff Tim Mitchell and the Webster County Sheriff’s Department also assisted. Bud McMillian’s body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy. Convicted felon Larry McMillian was taken into custody without incident and transferred to the Eupora Police Department, where Hunter charged him with murder. He has since been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. According to the latter affidavit filed by Hunter, he was convicted of manslaughter in April 1973 and of assault to kill in May Continued from page 1 1986, both in Missouri. Larry McMillian was transported to the Calhoun County Jail in Pittsboro on Saturday and brought back for a bond hearing Monday morning. Municipal Judge Buchanan Meek Jr. denied bond for him at the prosecutor’s request and appointed public defender Jay Hurdle of Starkville as counsel. Larry McMillian was returned to Pittsboro to await a preliminary hearing next week. Bud McMillian, who resided at 2216 W. Roane Ave., was the owner of M&M Lawn Services. He was also a local pastor, according to unconfirmed reports. Funeral service details were unavailable as of Monday.
