Evan & Valerie Kramer, Owners 832 Highway 101, P.O. Box 49 Port Orford, OR 97465 (541) 332-6565 (Voice or FAX) What’s Next For Theater 101 By Evan Kramer Now that Theater 101 has had a very successful opening of their playhouse at the Seaside Plaza Building with the two week run of the play “Sylvia” I wondered what was next for them. There are seven members of the Theater 101 acting company and they also serve on the board of directors. They are Peri Rask, Dianne Campbell-Antonio, Rick Antonio, Stacie Romele. Susie Eckhardt, Ken Stevens and Tere Tronson. Rask spoke for the group on Saturday and expressed her delight with the community acceptance of the play. Theater 101 sold 307 tickets for the six performances in their 75 seat theater and this included two sell-out performances on the Friday and Saturday night of the last weekend of the show. Rask was happy that they could make so many people laugh and have a good time. Her goal had been selling 300 tickets so she exceeded that one. Next up for Theater 101 is a Christmas show on December 21, 22 and 23. It will include a variety of entertainments from music to storytelling. If you would like to audition for the Christmas show please call 332-PLAY to get started. Please send advertising-related email to Valerie at [email protected] Please send press releases and letters to the editor to Evan at [email protected] Web Site: http://www.mydfz.com Back to Standard Time 2:00am Nov. 4, 2007 The Theater 101 acting company plans on putting on at least three plays next year in February, May-June and September. The board/company will be meeting soon to set the exact schedule and plays. producer at $500 per year to scene stealer at $100-$199 per year and thespian at $35 for an individual membership. Each level of support offers various incentives from season tickets to Theater 101 T-shirts. Rask said they would eventually do a musical at the Theater 101 playhouse. For the musical they need a male piano player as they are interested in putting on “Pump Boys and Dinette.” Use it or Lose It Rask is writing some grants now to get money for better outside signage for the theater and a good CD player with an easy to view readout. Theater 101 members welcome suggestions from the public. They want to do quality shows and performances for the town and visitors. They need some young people in their 20’s and 30’s to get involved in Youth Theater and they also want to do Senior Theater. Rask emphasized more than once they encourage community participation but the acting troupe is a company which will play most of the parts in the plays. There will be some auditions for actors outside the company and over time additions and subtractions from the core group. You can become a financial supporter of Theater 101 and become a member. There are several levels of support from Port Orford Senior Center president Owen Miller needs your attention and help. He has issued a brief press release stating that the Dial-A-Ride program operating out of the Senior Center will be discontinued on November 30 “unless participation dramatically increases.” Reasons stated for discontinuing this vital service are the high fuel prices which have gone up over 30 cents in the last two weeks and the cost of insurance. The other main problem is lack of ridership. It costs $3.00 to use the Dial-A-Ride service and is very simple. The Dial-ARide bus operates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday out of the Senior Center from 9:30am-1:30pm. The drivers are all volunteers. To get the bus all you do is call 332-5771 during the hours just listed and they will come get you. They will pick you up at your house and take you around town to the bank, post office, medical clinic, market, etc. for $3 Continued on Page 2 TrailBlazer Southport Forest Products Buying delivered conifer small saw log sort & conifer pulp logs Danger Trees - 24 hr Service. topping, limbing, removal & thinning Clearing: driveways, fencelines, propertylines Gifts & Thrifts 9-1 & 3-5 Tues - Sat Forrest Flowers Log Buyer 541-266-0903 541-266-0824 fax Cel. 541-297-5482 Home 541-332-4385 Trail building to streams, ocean, along riverbanks and propertylines Brush burnings References available Phone: 332-0907 572 14th St. 332-0933 Tide Predictions For Port Orford - 42° 44.735 N 124° 30.832 W Produced by “WXTide32” version 4.7 by Michael Hopper - http://wxtide32.com Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Monday LQtr 11-01 H0637 6.0 L1141 4.1 H1716 6.6 11-02 L0031 0.3 H0740 6.2 L1310 3.8 H1839 6.1 11-03 L0134 0.8 H0832 6.5 L1427 3.1 H2001 5.8 11-04 L0129 1.2 H0814 6.8 L1427 2.4 H2013 5.8 11-05 L0217 1.6 H0849 7.0 L1515 1.7 H2113 5.8 What’s Next For Theater 101 Continued from Front Cover which won’t even buy one gallon of gas. Owen Miller is asking the public to support this service or the community will lose it. Since we don’t have a taxi cab service in Port Orford like many communities up and down the coast the only alternative will be walking or finding a friend to drive you around town. This service is available to everyone in the community and if it doesn’t get more use it will be stopped. Axe-Sass’ns Take Opener By Evan Kramer The Coos County Roller Girls held their first bout in the first season of roller derby action on their home turf. The Coos Bay Roller Derby league consists of two teams – The Rockin’ Roulettes and the Axe-Sass’ns. They played last Saturday night at the National Guard Armory in Coos Bay (renamed The Armory of Darkness in honor of Halloween.) The Axe-Sass’ns took an early lead in the game and went on to beat the Rockin’ Roulettes by a score of 77-55. Tuesday 11-06 L0258 2.0 H0919 7.2 L1555 1.0 H2206 5.9 Axe-Sass’ns jammer Katarina Van Rotten was the lead scorer in the game and kept her team ahead all night. Rockin’ Roulettes jammers Shredder Bakskinov and Sista Hex put quite a few points on the board for their team. League founders Dolly Demented and the French Wench were happy with the sold out crowd at the Armory but are looking for a bigger place to play. The Armory sat less than 200 people and many people could not get in because of the sellout. The next event for the Coos County Roller Girls is when they travel to Rohnert Park for a bout with the Sonoma County Derby Divas on December 15. There are four roller derby leagues in Oregon including Portland, Eugene, Bend and now Coos Bay. The Coos County Roller Girls are looking for more than a bigger venue to skate in. They are looking for more roller girls. Team members must be 18 years or older and you must have a valid ID. Required equipment includes quad roller skates, protective gear including Wednesday 11-07 L0335 2.5 H0946 7.4 L1631 0.5 H2252 5.9 Thursday 11-08 L0408 2.9 H1012 7.5 L1705 0.1 H2335 6.0 a helmet, kneepads, elbow pads, wrist guards and a mouth guard. Beginners practice is held on Tuesdays at 6:00pm and on Sunday at 2:00pm at Sunset Middle School in Empire. To contact either Dolly Demented or the French Wench about joining the Coos County Roller Girls e-mail them at [email protected]. This isn’t the 1960’s roller derby. The new women’s roller derby that is sweeping the country got its start in Austin, Texas in 2001. All the skaters have interesting and colorful names (often plays on words) and numbers. The roller derby games are not scripted and the action is fast, hard hitting and not for the faint of heart. Most of the teams play on flat tracks rather than the banked tracks that were popular in the 50’s and 60’s. This is a full contact sport played to loud rock and roller music and is a lot of fun for the players and the people watching. Parks Commission Meeting The City of Port Orford Parks Commission meets Tuesday, Nov. 6, 7:00pm, in the city hall council chambers. Savoy Theatre Ruby Anne Johnston Rowe 5/18/34 – 10/26/07 My dear friend Anne (as she preferred to be called) passed from this life with her family by her bedside in the early evening of October 26 in Boise, Idaho. Her passing ended a difficult seven year struggle with Alzheimers complicated by a weakened heart and respiratory system as well as diabetes. Anne was born in the Portland area. She was raised by her paternal Grandmother whom she adored. Anne was married to John Rowe and they had two children. She became a widow not long after the birth of her second child. Anne worked to raise her children and eventually moved to the south Oregon coast as she was employed by the plywood company out on the Elk River. She helped raise her two granddaughters as they progressed through school at Pacific High School. She worked and lived in Port Orford for over twenty years. Anne and I became friends in 2000 when we met while walking our dogs. We became very close. 811 Hwy 101, Port Orford, OR Showtimes: 541-332-FILM (332-3456) Office: 541-332-3105 In the valley of elah Rated R 124 minutes Stars Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron Friday....................................................7 pm Saturday-Sunday...................4 & 7 pm Monday-Thursday..........................7 pm It was my honor and privilege to help Anne as she began to recognize the signs of increased memory loss. It was wonderful to have such a kind, sweet, loving friend. I am a better person for having known Anne. I think of her often as I walk my dog down the streets we walked so many times. I can still hear her laughing at one of the many stories we shared on our walks. We were determined to make the best of the time we shared. It was never a question of quantity of life but of quality. Anne, my dearest friend I am relieved your painful struggle is over. I am happy for your well deserved peace and rest. I promise to practice what you taught me. Good night sweet friend. Council Approves Contract The Port Orford City Council met on Thursday, October 25, in special session. The only agenda item was approval of the union contract with the city employees. Sergeant Halse responded to the residence and determined the male subject was having problems breathing. Ambulance responded and because all the doors were locked and the male subject could not open them Sergeant Halse broke a window and entered the residence. The male was transported by Ambulance to the hospital. Thanks to people who are watching others in this community. It was determined the driver had a suspended license in Washington and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The driver was given field sobriety tests and arrested for DUII Deborah Williams was transported to the Curry County Jail and charged with DUII. 10-27 A wallet was turned in to the Police Department. If anyone is missing one please contact our agency and identify it. No there is no money in it! We have a potential public safety problem in our community with both speed and pedestrian safety. We have determined there are four areas of pedestrian concern. There are no visible crosswalks at 15th Street which is where the library is being built next to Ray’s food place, and 18th, 19th, and 20th Streets. I started a “Where are our crosswalks” campaign and have contacted Oregon Department of Transportation to get crosswalks installed at those locations before we have a serious pedestrian Vs vehicle accident. Thanks to our city workers there are other areas in town where signage has been placed or moved to make them more visible like on Arizona Street. Chiefs Note: Motor Vehicle Crashes are the number one cause of death among teen drivers in the United States. In 2005 nearly 7,500 15 to 20 year old drivers were involved in fatal crashes so clearly more work needs to be done in this area to outreach our youth and do our part to prevent and reduce the number of teen crashes that result in death and disabilities. October 15-19 was National Teen Driver Safety Week and our community has had serious accidents involving teens on Halloween. To be proactive I teamed up with Fire Chief Gayle Wilcox Continued from Prior Page Speeder of the week: Police stopped a vehicle traveling 45 mph in a posited 30 mph zone. The upset driver immediately told police “I was issued a traffic ticket the last time I came through this town”. Apparently not having learned the first time, the driver was issued another traffic citation for speeding. REMEMBER: Many children will be out on Halloween night walking on our streets after dark. Letter to the Editor, A weekend ago, the Port Orford Community Ambulance responded to a particularly difficult incident that was called in by Port Orford Police Officer Scott Halse. Due to Officer Halse’s quick assessment for the need of EMT’s (Emergency Medical Technicians), willingness to remain on the scene and provide assistance; a life was saved. Thank you Scott. It’s a simple concept aimed at our community raising money for our schools. Everyone knows our district needs money. This fundraiser offers each school the ability to put the funds wherever their specific need entails. Technology, books, and playground equipment are some of the areas that could use a financial boost. These are basic needs and we as a community can help! 4 schools: Pacific High, Driftwood & Blanco Elementary, and Wilderland Montessori. We will feature each school’s specific needs in subsequent articles, noting how each school intends to apply their funds. $5.00 per school: A donation of $5.00 per school, or a $25.00 total donation. (Putting it in perspective- $5.00 is 2 coffee drinks or 2 video rentals.) Accounts for donations are set up CFCU and Sterling Bank. $5000 Total Goal (per school): In 5 weeks, we will divide up the total contributions between the schools. Principal of Blanco, Mick Lane remarks, “We would be honored with any amount, and you can be assured the money will go directly to the education of our students.” 5 Weeks: We will begin on Thursday, November 1. The window is short - only 5 weeks, ending on December 7. Every week, we will keep you updated as to how much has been raised so far. Please don’t put it off - hurry down to CFCU or Sterling Saving’s Bank and donate today! The Library Foundation received a grant for $6,570 from Trust Management Services. This agency funds nonprofit organizations throughout Oregon, with emphasis on the areas of education, community service, cultural, youth activities and historical preservation. The funds will be used for shelving in the kids’ section of the new library— special shelving that will hold the picture books, or, as we say in the trade, “The Everybody Books.” Grant writing efforts will continue as we try to raise the monies for the essential earthquakeproof shelving. It is expensive stuff, over $100,000, and it’s not like we can do without it. To prepare for this next round of grants, we did a review of our grant writing efforts to date. For new construction funds, we submitted 30 grant applications; 18 were granted and 22 were denied. For the shelving and landscaping funds, we have two applications under review, and plans to send out eight more. If you have any fund raising ideas (or extra funds) let us know; help us make that library bond disappear.
