SUMMER CAMP GUIDE
Frrom the Editor
i the air and that can only mean one
coming! While it is a great time
to be a kid — ahhhh, to be a kid again — it can be
challenging for parents to keep their kids occupied
during the summer months. Have no fear, our annual
Summer Camp Guide is here! Filled with activities,
classes and camps, this guide has something for every
interest and skill level. In fact, when putting together
this section, I am always amazed by the vast selection
of camps kids have these days. Listen to me, I'm starting to sound old. All
kidding aside, this is a fun section to work on and it gives me joy knowing
that summer camp memories are on the horizon.
Parents, grandparents and guardians, we hope this guide makes your
life a little easier, so all you have to remember to do this summer is protect
your kiddos from the sun (read Sunscreen Demystified on page 21). It is
my understanding that camps fill up fast, so don't delay, sign your kids up
today!
Have a happy and healthy summer!

Camps help take a bite out of childhood obesity. Camps help
children stay active during the summer when they may not be
playing sports or taking part in physical education at school.
In addition to exercise, many camps are making an effort to
serve food that promotes a healthy lifestyle.

Santa Barbara Charter School Summer Camp
Parks and Recreation Day Camps
and Sports Clinics ( 32 different camps in total)
Our camp is small but hugely fun. The children work together inventing games
and projects. The Charter School philosophy is that no child can be excluded
so all children can join in on whatever is
going on if they want to. We have several
activities available at all times so that
the children have choices that fit their
interests. We also have local field trips
and are at Goleta Beach twice a week.
Parks & Recreation offers the widest variety of camps and sports clinics in
the city. From the popular Nature Camp and Aquacamp to the newer ones
like Stand Up Paddling, Geocaching and Legos, we are the leaders in the
summer camp experience! Full, half day and 1 to 2 week choices are available
(depending on camp).

Summer Camp Guide
21
\
S
ummer is coming! Longer days and no school
mean more hours in the sun for kids and
adults alike. It's crucial to protect your skin
while you enjoy summer fun. We've all heard
the importance of lathering up with sunscreen, but
probably skipped out a few times or may not have
fully understood when to apply and what SPF to
buy. Here is a quick guide to protecting yourself and
your loved ones by being sun smart this summer!
SP What?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and represents the
sunscreen's ability to block
harmful rays. Normally the SPF
ranges from 2-50, but newer
sunscreens claim up to 100
SPF An SPF of 15 would mean
that you could stay in the sun
15 times longer and not burn,
than you could if you were not
wearing sunscreen. However,
it is important to note that SPF
protection does not proportionally increase with the
SPF number. For example, an SPF of 2 absorbs
50% of ultraviolet radiation, while an SPF 15 absorbs 93% of radiation and an SPF of 34 absorbs
97% of radiation.
Choosin9 Your Sunscreen
Dermatologists recommend using at least an SPF
of 15 year round. If you have fair skin or burn easily
you should choose a sunscreen with a high SPF.
Keep in mind sunscreens should be reapplied and
be sure to follow the directions on the product for
reapplication. Gel sunscreens generally sweat off
the easiest and should be applied more frequently.
To "cover" all your bases, be sure to choose a
brand that has broad spectrum coverage. This
means that they protect against both ultraviolet A
(UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. SPF coverage
only refers to blocking UVB rays, there is currently
no FDA-approved system to rate blockage of UVA
rays.
Sunscreen vs. Sunblock
There are two major types of sunscreens: chemical
and physical. Chemical sunscreen has ingredients
that function as filters that lessen ultraviolet radia¬
tion penetration on your skin. Chemical sunscreens
are usually colorless, although a thin layer can be
viable on your skin. They can contain both UVA
and UVB absorbers. Physical sunscreens, more
commonly known as sunblocks, contain ingredients
such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide that physi¬
cally block ultraviolet radiation. They protect against
both UVA and UVB rays. The protection that sun¬
blocks give cannot be quantified in SPF although it
is potentially high. Sunblocks are often recommend¬
ed for people with sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation.
Waterproof vs. Water Resistant
If you participate in outdoor physical or water activi¬
ties, you'll want to acquire a waterproof or water
resistant sunscreen. A sunscreen is considered
water resistant if it maintains its SPF 40 minutes
after being exposed to water and waterproof if it
maintains its SPF after 80 minutes.
When should you apply
Sunscreen?
EVERYDAY. Doctors recommend applying sun¬
screen anytime you will be outside longer than
20 minutes. For most of us, that happens during
routine activities everyday. Apply about 1 oz of
sunscreen to your dry skin 30 minutes before go¬
ing outdoors. You're probably thinking, "Wait, it's
cloudy, I don't need to put sunscreen on today."
False! 80% of the sun's ultraviolet rays pass
through clouds. Heading out for a day at Butterfly
or Leadbetter? It's extra important to slather on that
SPF when you are around sand—the suns reflective
powers increase by 17% on sand. The same goes
for snow, except they increase by 80%! Remember
to reapply! If you are not getting wet, reapply sun¬
screen approximately every 2 hours. If swimming or
sweating heavily, reapply after activity.
Many camps are
going green! It's
becoming less
and less popular
for camps to use
disposable water
bottles for campers.
Instead, many camps
are encouraging
campers to bring
reusable water
bottles.

W
e have fabulous camps in Santa Barbara and there is truly something for every child.
On ParentClick.com, you will find a list of more than 150 camps, swim and tutoring
programs! You will also find an event calendar filled with exciting summer activities
including the libraries' summer reading programs, concerts in the park, festivals and more.
Start your research early! Many camps fill up quickly so don't wait to send in your registration
forms. Most camps are offered on a weekly basis and several offer a daily rate. Children as
young as two can enjoy half and full day programs. Many preschools change to a camp format
for the summer and provide a safe and fun environment for toddlers. Teens can find overnight
camps and counselor in training (CIT) programs.
