Mr. Lovett mentions it often, as does just about everybody else here.” From the June 5 Baccalaureate night speech by Caleigh Cross, Class of 2011 “On Baccalaureate night, we’ve heard something we know in our hearts: The love between people—between families and friends, between individuals and communities—is a universal treasure, one of the best parts of being human. It is what brings us together in Fuller Hall this night. We have also witnessed here tonight that an even higher love—that joining the human with the divine—inspires us, and in particular our students, to share this love with others. We have been the beneficiaries of this love: teachers, mentors, parents, relatives, friends, and classmates. We have all been enriched because we share in this universal treasure, this best part of being human.”—Thomas Lovett, Headmaster, from a talk titled “Reflections on Love” at Baccalaureate night 2011. Caleb Dixon ANELEISA GLADDING-HINTON VALEDICTORIAN Good morning, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak to you today. Before I begin, I must say a general thank you to all of the students and teachers who have made my time here worthy of remembrance. They are too many to name individually, so thank you, to all of you. While I realize that this audience includes trustees, guests, families, and friends, I direct the bulk of my comments to my fellow graduates, the Class of 2011. It is inevitable that at this time we should be thinking of the completion of things, rather than their beginnings. Our graduation marks the end of this era of our lives. But this is only true within these walls, and soon enough we will realize, or remember, that Commencement is—as the name implies—about the beginning of our lives as adults, which is of much greater significance than the end of our high-school years. And that knowledge is, for me at least, overwhelming. We will no longer be the ones living by the decisions of others. Instead, we will be responsible for making them ourselves. And we cannot blame our dissatisfaction with those decisions upon anyone else. Moreover, there will be many decisions that we will be called upon to make— 4 Autumn 2011 collectively, as a generation—whose impact will reach not only us, but the generations to succeed us. The Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy states that in making our decisions, we must consider their impact not only upon ourselves, but upon the next seven generations. A wise maxim to follow, I think, given that we have all heard how we will be the generation to feel the effects of climate change, the growth of government debt, the flaws in our habitual lifestyles. And given the fact that it will also be up to us to overcome these difficulties. But there are many ways of overcoming obstacles. There is a difference between patching the hole, and replacing the pipe. So, too, there is a difference between addressing the symptom of a disease and treating the root of it. I am sure that in the years to come we—each of us—will encounter moments when we must choose between making a decision that will tide us—as the human race— over for the moment, and the decision that will solve the issue not only for our own generation, but for the generations to come. Before we can choose to include the long-term in our considerations, we must first remember simply to consider our actions before we take them. I use the words “action” and “decision” interchangeably because we cannot forget that an action is also a decision. It is easy to lose sight of this connection. We must remember that the small actions have large effects: the Internet purchase of a shirt, for example, which seems like a simple, unaffiliated action, in fact translates into the decision to economically support the online store, the decision not to support local retailers, the decision to create pollution by shipping a single item to your house—as opposed to bulk shipping to a store—the decision to spend your money rather than save it, and the decision to add to your (I assume) already full closet. Such actions, multiplied by the population of the world, translate into the universal decisions—votes, if you will—that shape our planet. They impact our economic communities, our environment, our individual financial health, and our global consumer lifestyle. But rarely do we stop to consider how our actions translate into decisions. The fact of the matter is that we do not have the time to think twice about every single motion throughout every single day. But all the same, I believe that we must acquire the habit of thinking critically about our own actions whenever it is possible. A part of this self-criticism must be an awareness of our specific characteristics as a generation: We have been dubbed the Internet generation for good reason. We are nearly universally connected in ways that augment and often supersede ordinary physical interactions. Even more notably, the immediate availability of what we want, as soon as we want it, has changed how we view our world, and how we expect to interact with it. How many of you consistently use the Internet to do your research or to find the definition of a word? I know I do—because why waste my time with a dictionary or encyclopedia when I can have what I want in a fraction of that time from the Internet. While this is a minor example, such instant gratification has trained us to expect this sort of instant result in much more significant scenarios. The reality of our changing world though, is that we can’t have everything exactly as we want it, when we want it. We can’t expect to have a healthy environment and also continue to consume goods in the manner we are accustomed to. We can’t devote our time to sitting in front of a digital screen and expect to retain a healthy, connected human community. We can’t eat the unhealthy food that is so readily available and expect to have a long and healthy life. We must learn to make sacrifices. We must resist the urge—which I believe is present—to think that solutions to our generation’s dilemmas are as far away as a Google search or an ask.com query. Moreover, we must resist the urge to assume that if such a solution is not so easily found, that it cannot be found. The dilemmas that we will face cannot be approached with the expectation of instant gratification. We must be patient. Change in these global realms is not a matter of expedited shipping or an instant message. We will not see the effects of any attempted change immediately. Perhaps the effects will not even occur within our lifetimes. But here is where the next seven generations come into play: Our decisions do not matter solely for ourselves, even for our whole generation. They matter for every generation to come. We will leave this place going into the world as adults, with an adult’s responsibilities. It will be all too easy to see those responsibilities as extending only to ourselves and those directly in contact with us. But they do not. We have a responsibility to our community—on a local scale, on a regional scale, on a continental scale, and on a global scale. My life is not just about me, in the singular. It is about we, in the plural. And that we includes everyone—the citizens of the world, one could call them—the beings who will feel the impact of our decisions, no matter how small, because what starts as the flutter of a butterfly’s wing—it has been said—may become a hurricane a hemisphere away. This responsibility transcends not only borders and oceans, but decades and centuries as well. We bear a responsibility to our children, and children’s children, and our children’s grandchildren. To the next seven generations, and beyond. It is impossible to live your life without touching the lives of others. I ask only that we be aware of that reality, and that that touch be gentle, and well-intended. The Charles L. and Angela Swift Prize and the Donald M. Jacobs Prize were awarded to senior and Valedictorian Aneleisa Gladding-Hinton by Headmaster Lovett. 5 over for the moment, and the decision that will solve the issue not only for our own generation, but for the generations to come. To the Board of Trustees, Mr. Hackett, Mr. Mayo, Mr. Cleary, Mr. Lovett, faculty, staff, parents, family, friends, and most of all the graduating seniors, welcome to Commencement 2011. In an attempt to comply with the one request I’ve heard over and over for my graduation speech— Claire, it’d better not be boring—I want to speak about something that I think is rarely mentioned: the diversity of this student body. Now I’m sure you’re probably thinking, You know, I heard this girl was smart but clearly not if she thinks diversity is never talked about at the Academy. However, I’m talking about something different from how many countries and states and religious backgrounds we come from, which is a lot by the way. I’m talking about a type of diversity that I’ve always thought of as a diversity of interests. This is not a type of diversity that can be reflected in any kind of numbers or description, but instead is a kind of diversity that has to be lived in to be appreciated or even noticed. It’s the type of diversity where the self-proclaimed math nerds, social butterflies, science geeks, and sports fanatics can be and are friends with the self-proclaimed poetry lovers, the painfully shy, history buffs, and the rather uncoordinated. It’s a kind of diversity that I think is unique because it gives people the ability to be whoever they want to be. There is nothing more oppressive than an atmosphere where individuals label each other, and there is nothing more liberating than an atmosphere where each 6 Autumn 2011 The Clare Catherine Lovett Prize and the Anna Morse Prize were awarded to Claire Simons by Headmaster Lovett. individual gets to label him or herself. St. Johnsbury Academy is certainly the latter. Not only do we get to label ourselves, but we also get to use as many labels as we want and to change them as often as we want. There aren’t many schools where I could be the chemistry lover, pole-vault freak, AP kid, world traveler, gymnast, fun enthusiast, and that strange person who skips down the sidewalk for no apparent reason. And those few self-chosen labels barely begin to brush the surface of all the labels I’ve acquired in high school. Looking at all the changes that have occurred in me (the vast majority of them good) because of this place and its diversity, I think it is probably appropriate to express some thanks, but to whom? Perhaps the administration for bringing such a group together? But that can’t be all of it. Perhaps the teachers for fostering such an atmosphere? But they could never be solely responsible for such an attitude. And that leads me to my answer: the students. So thank you seniors, for being who you are. Thank you for accepting everyone else for who they are. Thank you for continuing to accept people as both you and they have changed and found new labels. Thank you for having such diverse interests, passions, goals, and dreams. It has made being together these past for four years an adventure worth remembering. Having expressed my thanks to you seniors, I also have a request to make of you. Wherever you go next year, and in the rest of your lives, keep that ability to label yourself and not others. Go out and make your colleges, your work places, and your neighborhoods places where people like me can continue to skip down the sidewalk for no apparent reason. KATE ROOSA SALUTATORIAN 2011 COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS Bill Cleary W illiam T. Cleary, an early leader in developing Apple Computer’s marketing programs and a pioneer in Internetbased brand development, gave the 2011 Commencement address. Cleary is the CEO of Cleary & Partners, a small consulting firm based in Saratoga, CA, where he, his wife Kathy, and their three children reside. His son Ian graduated as a member of the Academy’s Class of 2011. “ We couldn’t replicate (the Academy) on the West Coast, we couldn’t create a Hollywood set that would even closely approximate what you have here,” Cleary said. “I tell my friends back in California that given the fact you guys have been working on it for 170 years, you really have it figured out when it comes to education.” Themes from Cleary’s address include: ń_^_^c][m_^`[]nfm[h^m[Ņ[mmb_>][^_g[l_ highly motivated and committed to academic excellence. The diverse student population serves as the perfect ‘organic laboratory’ of the future—conducive to learning and personal development, an incredible mix of students. The Academy exudes a ‘spirit,’ an optimism, and acceptance that tends to bring out the best in people. It’s best described as a kind and accepting nature that permeates every part of the school. Such a journey can be truly rewarding and exciting. If you embrace this change, you’re certain to be successful. During the course of my own life I’ve experienced several career changes: From teacher to entrepreneur. Important note: your education is just beginning. In your lifetimes you’ll each (in all probability) complete one major degree via on-line interactive media. The enculturation process (career preparation) is never complete. Information is expanding exponentially as the world develops greater interdependencies. It’s conceivable that you might be working for a company in London, developing socialmedia strategies for young people in Kuwait, while your home office is in Vermont. The future has never been more challenging—or filled with exciting possibilities. It occurred to me that there are likely many in our community of friends and supporters with the same question—and that this edition might be a great venue in which to provide an answer. The Academy, like most private schools, uses funds donated by alumni, parents, friends, and foundations to supplement the money received from tuition. During its first half-century, the Academy, like the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum and the Fairbanks Museum (two other prominent local institutions), was supported almost entirely through the generosity of the Fairbanks family. Since then, gifts from alumni, parents, friends, and foundations have helped provide each Academy student with world-class educational opportunities, while keeping our tuition affordable. Every student who ever attended the Academy has benefitted from the generosity of others. Gifts from alumni, parents, faculty and staff, along with friends and foundations, have built our campus and provided the endowment, which helps to fund many of the opportunities our students enjoy. The recently launched “Embrace the Dream Campaign” has raised more than $14 million. These gifts have helped to build two new dormitories, establish our engineering program, provide new information technology, endow faculty chairs in Engineering and Innovation and Entrepreneurship (the cornerstone of our Capstone program), and contribute more than $500,000 annually in support of current programs, including the new Center for Academic Improvement (a k a “the Learning Center”). This year, student tuition accounted for 86 percent of our operating budget, with the balance of more than $3 million coming from the Annual Fund, endowment income, grants, and other programs (including the very successful AP Institute in the summer). Without these funds we would need to raise tuition or cut programs and student support by a similar amount. Doing so would undoubtedly compromise our ability to serve our students, make it impossible to attract and retain outstanding faculty, and severely limit the kind of investments in technology and equipment that our students and faculty need to compete in an increasingly competitive and global economy. Your generosity helps us to maintain the highest personal and academic standards by making it possible for us to provide the support necessary to help each student meet these high expectations. “Gifts from alumni, parents, faculty and staff, along with friends and foundations, have built our campus and provided the endowment, which helps to fund many of the opportunities our students enjoy.” Our community-wide commitment to being a great school and community, where every child is valued and nurtured, is only possible because you provide the resources to support the kind of wraparound services that help each child to gain academic and personal success. During the final phase of the “Embrace the Dream Campaign,” we will approach several key foundations for support. A high percentage of donors among those closest to the school—including trustees, administration, faculty, parents, and alumni—is crucial to gaining the support of these foundations, which makes your gift, regardless of size, more important than ever. 11 The Class of 1961, celebrating their 50th reunion, accepted all three of the reunion gift awards from Trustee President Lee Hackett ’57. Class representatives accepting the awards were Nancy Chouinard Cohen, Gene Dionne, and Barbara Black Destino. The class raised over $12,000 from 42 classmates with a class giving percentage of 34%. Alumni Awards St. Johnsbury Academy’s Dwayne B. Sherrer Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to an alumnus/a who has shown distinguished, loyal service to the Alumni Association, his or her community, state or nation, and who has exceptional achievement in his or her chosen field of endeavor. This year’s award was presented to David Keenan ’81. As Dan Thurston ’50 mentioned during his award presentation, “From his youthful days growing up in Monroe, NH to currently living in Lyndonville, VT, he has always been dedicated to his roots at St. Johnsbury Academy. Whether it be his profession or charitable endeavor, this man gives his all to the community around him.” Congratulations, Dave! The St. Johnsbury Academy’s Northeast Kingdom Service Award is presented annually to an alumnus/a or friend of the Academy for his or her unselfish dedication and service to the continued improvement of the Northeast Kingdom. This year’s award was presented to Tom Conte. Tom Lovett said, “ Tom has set the example for hospitality, class, and attention to detail in welcoming guests and managing events at the Academy and in the community. Likewise, he has deeply touched the lives of countless young people, athletes and non-athletes alike, and their friends, families, and coaches.” Congratulations, Tom. 12 Autumn 2011 Joyce Atherton Dumas ’49 has been a critical component to the SJA Alumni Council for many years. Joyce was honored and given lifetime membership on the Alumni Council by Director of Alumni Relations Tammi Sullivan Cady ’88. Norman Renaud ’56 accepts the award for traveling the farthest for Reunion Weekend. Norm lives in Korea. In recognition of his years of dedicated service to the SJA Alumni Council, George Cunavelis ’41 was honored and given lifetime membership on the Alumni Council by Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Alan Ruggles ’84. Accepting the award on behalf of his brother was John Cunavelis ’45. The Class of 1942 Challenge Cup is awarded each year to the non-reunion class with the greatest number of donors to the gift program. Trustee President and member of the winning class Lee Hackett ’57 presented the award to other members of his class who were in attendance. Accepting the award on behalf of the Class of 1957 were Dick Paddleford, Andy Dussault, Carmen Desrochers Repasz, and class agent Bruce Scott. The Class of 1957 had 24 donors. That passion includes a determination to recognize and encourage exceptional performance by Academy teachers just starting their careers. Both began their Academy teaching careers as interns in 1990, and then left in 1997 to pursue MBA degrees at Thunderbird, the American School of International Management, in Phoenix. Their Academy connection endured, however, with the couple remaining faithful donors to the school’s annual fund, and later focusing on helping endow the school’s Dr. Norman Atwood Prize for Excellence in Teaching, awarded at the discretion of the headmaster during Commencement to “a teacher in the beginning years who has exhibited creativity, compassion, and consistency in addressing the needs of students, and who has demonstrated professionalism through enthusiasm for his or her academic discipline, and support for the traditions and the history of St. Johnsbury Academy.” “Our experience at the Academy certainly was instrumental in our decision” to remain donors long after they left, Nadine said. “First, the Academy is a school focused on good teaching and broad access to a strong education, and Shaun and I are passionate about the opportunities created for individuals as a result of a good education. A good education is a direct result of good teaching—and good teaching must be recognized, fostered, respected, and compensated. The Academy is a place where theses principles are practiced and the Atwood Prize is a small vehicle for us to honor our belief in education. “Second, our dear friend (legendary Academy Latin teacher, the late) Graham Newell named the prize for Norman Atwood and shared stories about Norman with us,” she added. “ We believe that any contribution we could make to honor someone special to Graham would honor Graham as well— and what better way to honor one of our greatest teachers. We aspire to endowing the prize so that it continues to inspire great teaching over the years, linking future teachers to the legacy of such extraordinary gentlemen as Graham Newell and Norman Atwood.” A lifelong friend of Newell’s and English professor, Mr. Atwood shared his love of St. Johnsbury history and was also an expert on local architecture, including the Academy’s Brantview dormitory. Nadine knows firsthand the impact the Atwood Prize can have on young teachers. “I received it after my first year at the Academy and was personally inspired by the honor and the responsibility of such a recognition,” she said. During her years at the Academy, she taught Spanish 1-4, as well as a few English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, while Shaun split his time between Mathematics and History classes. Both served as dormitory counselors and coaches, with Nadine selected as Head Counselor for the Sheepcote girls’ dorm, coaching field hockey and basketball, and helping lead spring student trips to Mexico; Shaun mentored Waterman boys and coached the Academy’s tennis and Math League teams. Shortly after earning their MBAs, the couple moved to Miami, where they both worked for American Express, supporting the Latin America Card business. In July 2005, they moved to Singapore with Nadine heading Marketing and Information for the American Express Merchant Business in Asia, and Shaun continuing in a Global Information Management role. Their time in Singapore was also highlighted by the birth of their third child. The family returned to Miami in July 2008 with Nadine and Shaun remaining in global information and analytics roles at American Express. “ We kept our gift anonymous for a number of years and only in the last year or so has it become public. In keeping the gift anonymous, we ensured a focus on the prize and its winners and the significance of great teaching. Having said this, we also understand that by personalizing our commitment to great teaching, we can share the passion with others and possibly grow support for the wonderful classroom experience that the Academy provides,” said Nadine. In July of this year, Nadine left American Express to begin a business consultancy and a small education services business. “Shaun and I continue to feed our passion for education, by supporting local education, PTAs, and fundraising at our children’s schools,” Nadine said. “ We believe that our strong foundation at the Academy cultivated our passion for what can be accomplished at great schools.” They are the proud parents of Anna, 11, Declan, 9, and Owen, 4. Editor’s Note: Shaun’s mother, Jean (McGregor) Rogers, is a member of SJA’s Class of 1956 and Academy Board of Trustees Member Emerita. 27 Jenis EllingwoodCedeno BY RICHARD BECK ’66 L ike many Academy students, Jenis Ellingwood-Cedeno didn’t fully appreciate some of the lessons she was learning until she put them to use in adult life. Now she is showing her gratitude to her alma mater through both monetary donations and a wide variety of voluntary services. In addition to hosting Academy alumni gatherings in her new hometown, Chicago, she also travels to alumni events throughout the country, and frequently does volunteer work for the school’s Alumni & Development Office. “Like many of our alums, Jenis not only gives financially to the Academy but she gives in so many other ways, including giving of her time and talent. Even with such a busy schedule, she always has time to provide assistance, feedback, and input when needed. Not only have I enjoyed getting to know her over the years, but I have enjoyed her friendship. She is just one reason why the Academy is such a special place,” said Tammi Cady, director of development and alumni relations. Ellingwood-Cedeno (’97) graduated from Emory University with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration in 2001 and began working at DRW Trading Group in Chicago three months later. She then clerked for six traders in the Eurodollar Options pit at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange for a year, and traded single stock futures and South Korean Kospi Index Options. In 2005, she joined the Convertible Bond Group at DRW, where she weathered the financial storm of 2008 and continues to trade. She currently sits on the DRW Philanthropy Committee, helping direct charitable giving by the firm’s corporate foundation. “The Academy prepared me academically for the rigors of college,” Ellingwood-Cedeno said. “More importantly, the Academy taught me the importance of community and teamwork, which helped me excel in business school as well as in the ’real’ world.” “The exceptional teachers in the (Academy) 28 Autumn 2011 Math and English Departments aided me most in preparing for Emory and for my career,” she added. “The accelerated math program and my senior AP Calculus class taught by (former Academy teacher) Michelle Ralston, as well as a fabulous English class with (former teacher) Erin Mayo proved invaluable in preparing for the SAT and for getting into college; but, most importantly, for laying the foundation for success at Emory and DRW Trading Group.” “Although I didn’t like them much at the time, a healthy dose of group project work foreshadowed life outside the classroom in the business world,” Ellingwood-Cedeno said. “The ability to work on a team, communicate and collaborate are critical skills I began building at the Academy.” “I think Chapel is one of the most important ways the Academy fosters a sense of community among students. Meeting together every morning provides a forum for students to interact, but also for students to hear about the activities and successes of their peers and teachers. Chapel helps create an engaging environment of shared experiences among the diverse student body. I have watched my firm work to strengthen a sense of community among employees as they try to build a stronger organization. “The Academy is a very special place where not only the most exceptional students flourish but where people of varied abilities are challenged and driven to realize their greatest potential,” she stressed. “I am dedicated to continue in the proud tradition of service that helped make the Academy such a special place to learn and to ensure that it only gets better with age.” Note: Jenis’ father, Mark Ellingwood, is a member of the Academy’s Class of 1970. Her mother, Cheryl Gale Chesley, is a 1971 graduate, and sister, Aimee, is a member of the Class of 1999. Her grandfather, Eugene Ellingwood, celebrated his 70th Academy class reunion in June, and said he “hasn’t missed one yet.” Helen Byers Johnson BY JOSEPH HEALY H elen Byers Johnson began giving to the Academy’s annual fund the year she graduated, 1928, and gave every single year, up until she passed away at 99 ½ in November 2009. She also made a lasting gift to the Academy that will be used to name the archives area below the library in the Mayo Center the Helen Byers Johnson Archive Room. Helen’s family moved to St. Johnsbury in the 1920s from Wells River, Vermont, so she could “have the Academy experience,” says her son, Dick Johnson, Class of 1954. Dick stresses that the lifetime achievement for which his mother was most proud was graduating from the Academy. “My mother, if there’s anything she will be remembered for, was a mother to my classmates— and not just mine, but my sisters’ too. As long as I can remember, whenever Academy classmates or friends came to town, they would stop to see Helen. She was a magnet,” says Dick. “Mrs. Johnson is a wonderful example of what we praise all the time—those who come before take care of those who come after. She was a loyal alum for 81 years—not only financially, but in all other ways. She loved kids and she loved the Academy. Having a named space in memory of Mrs. Johnson on campus is a fitting tribute to both her and her family,” said Tammi Cady ’88, director of alumni and development. Helen and Clark Johnson (’28) were married in 1932, following Clark’s graduation from Middlebury College, and raised three children, all Academy graduates—Dick, Joann (’57) and Virginia (’51)—in St. Johnsbury. Clark worked for the Ralston-Purina Company his entire career, as Helen followed a traditional (for the time) family role. “ While we were students, our parents never missed an activity or event we were in on campus,” Dick says. “I remember playing baseball on old Hazen Field and looking up and seeing my Dad standing there. Dad and Mother were incredibly supportive of everything that went on at the Academy.” 29 Those guests receiving pins from Headmaster Tom Lovett during the 2011 Thaddeus Fairbanks Luncheon include (row 1 L-R) Hope Colburn on behalf of Community National Bank, Thad Richardson on behalf of the Community National Bank, Albert Salt ’43, (row 2 L-R) Wilson Jackson ’71, Tanya Pappalardo, Mike Pappalardo, and Tom Lovett. Gleason & Family IN HONOR OF FACULTY JOSEPH MESICS Anonymous Joseph and Sandra Mesics A deferred gift annuity can meet your needs and SJA’s too. Here’s how it works: 1. You transfer cash, securities, or other property to St. Johnsbury Academy. 2. Beginning on a specified future date, SJA begins to pay you – or up to two annuitants you name – fixed annuity payments for life. 3. The principal passes to SJA when the contract ends. The benefits to you include an immediate tax deduction for a portion of your gift and the ability to postpone annuity payments until you need them. Meanwhile, the principal grows tax free.
