“Douglas Detrick is one of the brightest young talents
to emerge in Oregon jazz lately.”
-Brett Campbell,
Willamette Week, 8.27.09
Douglas Detrick’s AnyWhen Ensemble is a part of a small but exciting group of ensembles
fusing the jazz and classical traditions together into a new and vibrant music that respects and
builds upon its sources. The ensemble draws its influence from musical genres ranging from
classical and new chamber music, traditional and contemporary jazz, and free improvised
music. The music is intimate and personal, blending the spontaneity of improvised music with
the balance and form of chamber music. “Walking Across”, the ensemble’s first release, is out
on 8Bells Records. Samples of the record can be heard at myspace.com/anywhenensemble.

Douglas Detrick, 25, is a composer and trumpet player based in Eugene, Oregon. Equally at
home as a performer and a composer, he is a versatile and eclectic musician. Through his
innovative and prolific compositions, performance and recordings, Detrick is quickly
establishing himself as an important composer-performer of his generation. Detrick’s works
have been performed by the Douglas Detrick Quintet, the Detrick/Swigart Jazz Orchestra
as well as by new music groups the Meridian Arts Ensemble and Beta Collide, led by Brian
McWhorter of the Meridian Arts Ensemble, and Molly Barth, a grammy-winning flutist formerly
of Eighth Blackbird. Detrick was a winner of a 2007 Downbeat Student Music Award for his
arrangement of Duke Ellington's "Single Petal of A Rose". This piece was recorded by the
Lawrence University Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble and received its public
premiere with the Wenatchee Valley Symphony of Wenatchee, WA.
