So You Want to Shave
the Potentate’s Head?
I think everyone knows how important
membership in our great fraternity is to me.
We have set a goal this year to create 300
new nobles and we are off to a great start.
There are several incentives like free annual
or lifetime dues, but I have decided to up the
ante!!!
If we reach our goal of at least 300 new
nobles this year, the member who has TopLine Signed the most new brothers will have
the opportunity to shave my head!! That’s
right; I am willing
to go bald if we hit
that goal. If we hit
300 early, we will
have the shaving
ceremony at our
Full Ceremonial
on November 19;
otherwise, we will
do it at a Stated
Meeting. I believe
in having a little bit of fun as we work hard
to promote Murat Shrine and the Shrine
Experience!!
I was joined by Assistant Rabban Chuck
Shull and Captain of the Guard Tim Whitaker
on the front cover of this month’s magazine
to promote our Sportsman Raffle. The raffle,
to be held April 30 at Murat, is our largest
fundraiser and we need your help selling
tickets to the event. Beginning at noon that
day, we will give away 100 guns and several
gift cards. Several of our Clubs and Units will
have side raffles that day.All those attending
will get free food and drinks all day long.AND
the individual who sells the most tickets will
receive the rifle pictured on the front cover.
This beautiful “Masonic Commemorative”
Henry Rifle is adorned with Masonic
emblems and has George Washington in full
Masonic regalia engraved on the stock.A
true collector’s item can be yours if you are
the top salesman.Tickets are available in the
Murat Shrine office.
I was honored by the Murat Dramatic
Cast in March at a dinner called the “Brass
Hat.” Noble Randy Seipel was the MC for
the evening and conducted an excellent
roast of your Potentate. I received several
presentations that evening, many of which
had been previously given to my Shrine
Father and Past Potentate
Craig Hinshaw.As a Past
President of the Dramatic
Cast, I am extremely
grateful for the honors
they gave me that night.
For the first time in
decades, the Potentate’s
Ball was held outside the
Murat building. I thank
all the dedicated nobles
and ladies who helped make this a night to
remember, but especially Past Potentate Jeff
Zaring and Lady Margie for all their hard
work. This is one of Murat’s largest events and
we all enjoyed the spectacular venue at the
Indiana Roof.
We continue to have great events for our
nobles and ladies. Our Band Nights continue
to grow with great entertainment. Bring a
prospective candidate and his lady to the
next one. Let them experience the “Shrine
Experience”!!!
Yours in the faith,
Carl E. Culmann

Utilizing New Medical Tech
GORDON J HUSK, FORMER CHAIRMAN, BOARD OF GOVERNORS, SHRINERS HOSPITAL®–CHICAGO
S
hriners Hospitals for Children
has adopted many new medical
advances over the years to provide better outcomes for our patients.
Likewise, new technology has improved
medical care. For example, the x-ray machine has helped diagnose medical conditions for many years, and it still serves
well. However, more recent inventions
are better for specific uses.
Computerized tomography (CT) scan
arrays a series of x-ray images taken
from various angles.Through the use of
computer processing, it can produce
cross-sectional images or slices of the
bones, blood vessels and soft tissue. This
shows greater detail than plain x-rays.
A CT scan has many uses and is able
to quickly examine people who may
have internal injuries from accidents or
other trauma.A CT scan can be used to visualize nearly all
parts of the body and is used to diagnose disease or injury
as well as to plan medical, surgical or radiation treatment.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) does not utilize xrays, but instead uses a magnetic field and radio waves to
create detailed images of the organs and tissues. Most MRI
machines are large, tube-shaped magnets.When a patient
lies in an MRI machine, the magnetic field temporarily
realigns hydrogen atoms in the body. Radio waves cause
these aligned atoms to produce faint signals, which are used
to create cross-sectional MRI images, like slices of bread. The
MRI machine can also be used to produce 3-D images that
may be viewed from many different angles. MRI can reveal
minor damage to tendons, ligaments and muscles. An MRI
display of the heart and surrounding arteries can provide
early warning of advancing coronary disease, and can help
locate cancerous tumors.
CT and MRI seem similar, so which one is better? That depends upon what part of the body the doctor is interested
in and the reason for the exam. Doctors will ask for a CT
scan when they want to diagnose a muscle or bone disorder or look for tumors, a fracture or a blood clot. Bleeding
8 in the brain, especially from an injury,
can be seen better on a CT scan than an
MRI. If an accident results in damage to
internal organs that is not clear from a
physical examination, a CT scan shows
organ tears and injury, broken bones and
spinal damage more efficiently.This is
usually why ER doctors order CT scans.
Normally for an abdomen and pelvis
scan, a CT is considered better than an
MRI. However, if a doctor is interested
in seeing tendons and ligaments, an MRI
is the better choice. The spinal cord also
can be seen better on an MRI image,
since the density of these structures and
tissues is more defined.
Because of the generosity of donors
who specifically designated their gifts
for this special purpose, some of our
Shriners Hospitals, including Lexington
and Chicago, are installing EOS machines, which have some
significant advantages over other systems, for some specific
uses. The innovative EOS imaging system generates an x-ray
of the whole body in 3D using a fraction of the radiation
dose it would take to do this with conventional radiography
or CT scans. The EOS imaging system is based on the work
of Georges Charpak, who won the Nobel Prize for Physics
in 1992. His work on high-energy particle physics led to
development of the multiwire proportional chamber that
allowed physicists to detect one million particle events per
second as compared to only one hundred with previous
equipment. Dr. Charpak, in collaboration with a leading
French orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Jean Dubousset, developed
the EOS imaging system as a low-dose x-ray imager.
Patients stand in the EOS machine. Standing allows the
skeleton to be imaged in weight-bearing posture. Many
children with scoliosis or spinal curvature receive repeated
x-rays over a number of years. The EOS radiation dosage is
shown to be up to 100x less than computed tomography
(CT) scanners, and 6–9 times less than computed radiography (CR).This type of imaging enables doctors to view
all areas of the body with one image, rather than stitching
THE MURAT MAGAZINE
together multiple images. It gives an accurate view of the
musculoskeletal system that is essential to diagnosis and
treatment planning.
As previously stated, all these systems are important
to diagnostics and treatment. Each will have negative and
positive factors. Some machines are noisy and require the
patient to lie still for an extended period of time. Some machines are much more expensive while others, such as EOS,
are less costly and require only minutes to produce images.
During recent meetings at Shriners Hospital-Chicago, we
saw a reproduction of an actual patient’s spine, which was
produced by a 3-D printer, utilizing data from a CT scan. The
attached photo shows this reproduction of the spine, which
can be suspended in the operating room and rotated to
visualize precisely where the next screw, rod or clip is to be
placed. This allows the surgeon to measure the exact depth
of placement for a screw.
Shriners Hospitals for Children® is a pediatric healthcare system of 22 hospitals
dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing specialty care, innovative
research and outstanding teaching programs. Children up to age 18 with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for
care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, without regard to
the patients’ ability to pay. Shriners Hospitals for Children relies on the generosity of
donors to deliver this mission every day.

Mike Horn
Gentlemen, I hope this article finds you all doing well. I want to thank all
of you for the calls, cards and condolences sent in regarding the passing of my
dad. Lieutenant Michael C. Horn retired from the Indianapolis Police Department in 2001 after serving the citizens of Indianapolis for 34 years. My dad
was a proud member of the Police Club and loved coming to meetings, until
his health declined. For those of you who knew him, he pulled no punches. If
you asked his opinion, you would get just that. He flowered nothing and had
a very dry sense of humor. I had the opportunity of working with him in the
narcotics unit. I can remember him encouraging the young Mike (me) to slow
down and take my time. The funny part of being in the same office with dad
was Lieutenant Randy West (Police Club secretary-treasurer) sat at the desk
right next to him. Needless to say, advice was never far away. My dad worked
narcotics for most of his 34 years in the department. The narcotics unit was a
very close group of individuals. The weekends were spent playing with all my
dad’s partners’ families. We would get up early Saturday morning, load our dirt
bikes and off to Aunt Mary’s farm with two or three of dad’s partners and their
boys. The camaraderie I observed between my dad and his partners was the
biggest influence I had for wanting to join the Police Department. I guess it
was a big influence for my brother Jeff, too; he joined two years after I did. Did
I tell you that my mom spent 23 years on the Indianapolis Police Department?
It seems to be a family affair—my mom, dad, brother and wife either currently
work for or are retired from the Police Department.
The Drill Team commander (Grant Mumford) would like to get some input
on putting a summer Police Club picnic together. The Club has not had a
picnic for the past couple summers; let’s get back on track. Come to the next
Police Club meeting and listen to some great police stories. We meet the first
Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m.
Remember:You don’t have to be a police officer to join the Police Club and
NOW you don’t have to own a bike to be part of the Drill Team.

Well here we are going into April
2016. I always seem to be writing
about how fast the year is going and
once again I am mentioning it. We set
several goals at the beginning of the
year and before you know it, the year
is close to being half over. That is how
the Johnson County Shrine Club is
rolling, just like a speeding train. In
March, we met with several members
of the Shelby County Shrine (our
neighbors to the east) for a discussion on membership. As most of you

12 know, we all struggle with finding
folks to handle the day-to-day operating needs of our Clubs and Units.
By pairing up and working together
with Shelby County, we might be able
to fill some voids. Both clubs have a
desire to find new members and keep
those members moving in the right
direction for the good of the order.
Most all people of the Murat
Shrine know Don Borski and I cannot say enough about this man. He
was our Man of the Year for both
the Johnson County Shrine Club and
the Johnson County Mini-Mystics,
and once again this year, he is out in
front of everything that needs to be
done in the kitchen. He is at the Club
practically every day making sure we
have plenty of stock and ensures that
all items needed for the salad bar are
fresh and prepared with love. Don is
one of those guys who is ready to do
whatever it takes. For 76 years old,
Don runs around the Club like a teenager! We are very proud to have Don
as one of our own.Thank you Don!
Now make sure you get to Johnson County Shrine Club for dinner on
a Friday night. Dinner is served from
5 to 8 p.m. Just come on down and
check out some great food and mingle with some old and new friends!

BROWN COUNTY SUMMER FESTIVAL – Please pick up a brochure
for the upcoming festival in Brown
County, Nashville, IN.There will be
several things to do, it’s inexpensive,
and it’s only an hour away. Last year
was very successful and all had a
good time. We will again participate
in the parade on Saturday morning
with our Colonels float.
PARADE UNIT – This is the fourth
year for our parade unit. We participate in selected parades in and
around the Indianapolis area with
some exceptions. Our theme is
our Shriners Hospitals with several
colonels dressed in their white suits
and riding on the trailer. We will be
advertising our Club as well as our
hospitals. If you have an interest in
participating, please let President
Luke Whitehouse know. Colonel Whit
Smith will be supplying the trailer
(float). We may need some help in
Dennis Scott
construction and decorating the float
so it will stand out among the rest.
PARADE SELECTION – Tentative
locations for us to participate are as
follows: Brown County on 6/11, Morristown on 7/30, Shelbyville on 8/14,
Zionsville on 9/10, Aurora on 10/1,
and Martinsville on 10/9.
SPORTSMAN RAFFLE – The Club
will raffle a sport cooler that is able
to hold ice for up to 10 days. We have
done very well in the past and hope
to do as well this time. Don’t forget
there will be 90 guns raffled this year
so get your tickets. We could always
use help manning the table from
noon to five. You can sell our cooler
raffle tickets in advance to those who
may not be able to attend the raffle
on April 30.
WHITE SUITS – We are continuing
to look at places for white suits that
look good but are priced right for
the number of times we wear them

Hello there Race Fans! Here it is
April 2016 and we are out spinning
those little Goodyear tires and tearing
up the asphalt. The boys are ready to
get this parade season started and hit
the circuit. We have kept Bob Torrance
busy all year in the fab shop creating
some new parts to keep the cars rolling straight and sliding sideways when
needed. We hope that Lee Langlotz
has been in the engine shop so he can
find some speed and reliability. He had
a rough time last year; we started calling him Mario Andretti! The old saying
was:“He is slowing down.” I believe Lee has a new power plant and he will
be producing some horsepower on the parade route; so stay on the sidewalk
and off of the street, because Lee is showing up to drive fast.
If you are interested in being a member of the Mini-Mystics, come on
the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. to the Johnson County Shrine
Club, 751 West King St., Franklin, IN 46131 or call Duane Burgess at (317)
410-9009. We would love to have you and you can come out for a test drive!
There is nothing more relaxing than parading as a Mini-Mystic and making a
child smile.
God Bless and be safe!
14 during the year. You can check with
Colonel Norman Ettinger at Leon Tailoring, (317) 403-9014, to see what he
can offer. Other places are New Era
Clothing and Mode Lane. Be sure you
get actual white suits and not cream.
Have you been to a meeting lately?
We miss you and can use some good
ideas on how to make our Club even
better. Do you know a Kentucky
Colonel who does not belong to our
Club? Is there someone who qualifies
to be a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels? Please let
a member know and we can make it
happen. See you at the next meeting.

more than once with a lot of laughs

Our first meeting of the year was held on March 22,
and we fired up the boilers to get our wheels rolling.
Our membership is up 30 percent over last year and it’s
good to see some new faces and larger meetings. There’s
still time, if you hurry, to pay your dues and be included
in this year’s membership directory. We’re going to
have a busy year as we lay a lot of new track to redo
the existing layout tables. We want to clean, repair and
upgrade the appearance of our clubroom to match the
temple improvements. We’re planning a couple social
events with our ladies as well. Don’t miss the train and
a lot of opportunities for fun and fellowship. Our April
meeting will be held in the clubroom on the 26th at 7
p.m. As normal, the dining car will open before we get
to business, so come early and enjoy some food and fun.
Visitors and guests are always welcome. Highlight us

April … when we look forward
to all the spring flowers coming
into bloom, opening windows and
smelling the fresh air. Some of us can
remember when spring meant being
able to hang washings on the outdoor lines. Nothing smells any better
than fresh laundered sheets that have
hung outdoors in the sunshine and
air dried and put right on the bed. If
you haven’t had the experience, you
don’t know what you have missed.
April is also when we celebrate
Easter and the resurrection of our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
We welcomed the following new
Princesses to Koran Temple at our
White Rose ceremonial: Samatha
Green, Catherine Sparks and Katie
Tregresser.

16 It’s April ... here in the southeastern corner of Indiana, SEISC members have
been busy counting down the MONTHS and now we are counting down the
DAYS until we will once again be manning the grills and opening the clubhouse doors for our monthly steak dinners—our chance to really share with
our communities what Shriners do in helping kids!
The new carpet and hardwood floor installation has been completed in
the clubhouse. The remodeling of the second building used for the steak dinners, although not completed as I am writing this, will be soon! The grills are
cleaned, the charcoal stocked up and supplies readied for the season’s first
steak dinner on Friday, April 15. We threw a party last month for our ladies
who have helped us so faithfully on steak nights in the past to thank them for
their help, for baking those great homemade desserts included with your meal,
for helping in the kitchen and on the serving lines.
We’d love to have the opportunity to serve you dinner any third Friday
evening April through November. You and your lady, your family, maybe bring
some friends or … maybe your Club would want to consider a weekend visit
to our Cincinnati hospital or maybe even plan a trip to Lexington to see what
our Shriners Hospital there is doing and have dinner with us on your way!
We’re located at 15626 U.S. Highway 50 West, Dillsboro, IN. From 5 p.m. to
8 p.m., our menu offers you a choice of:T-bone steak, chopped steak, grilled
chicken breast or smoked pork chop; those Moores Hill potatoes that are a
favorite of many; baked potato, soup, salad, green beans, fried biscuits, dessert,
coffee and iced tea and for those who wish, the bar is always open! Come on
down!
We at SEISC have been saddened recently by the death of three longtime
members and extend our sympathy to their families.

the members of Murat, our third Brewmaster’s Dinner, to

& Brewery, located at 2801 Lake Circle Drive, Indianapolis,
IN 46268. (That’s just along W. 86th Street between
Michigan Road and Township Line Road on Indy’s
northwest side.)
Ever wonder the difference in
the types of clowns? Here is a brief
outline on them.
The Whiteface clown is a typical
circus clown, usually the boss clown.
His costume is bright and neat with a
ruffled collar. Often in his mind:“He is
always right even when he is wrong.”
Auguste clown (German for foolish): more of the prankster bright
costume and makeup is flesh tone
with exaggerated facial features. He
is clumsy and normally the instigator
and things seem to backfire on him,
making him the blunt of jokes.
The Tramp clown is down on his
luck, sad and wears torn old clothes.
He is usually lazy and avoids work at
all costs.
Hobo clown is upbeat, happy-golucky. Like the tramp, he is down on
his luck but he has no worries. His
costume is slightly brighter than the
tramp.

Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m.

We have made it through the winter months, which were mild, and now
it is time for golf. I want to thank the members for their help in registering at
the GLSA Leadership Academy. I also want to thank all of the nobles and their
ladies for their help at the Potentate’s Ball; it was a great success.
At the March meeting, we honored our past president and thanked all for
their help and leadership at all of our functions. Also, we couldn’t accomplish
our goals without the help of our ladies. This evening the Lil’ Istiks had their
white elephant auction with Phil Christy as the auctioneer. It was a great
evening.
This month we will have the President’s party and look forward to a great
evening of fellowship and fun.
To the membership, I ask you to bring a new member to the Murat Shrine
for our meeting and introduce him to the Reception Unit.Tell him that we are
the face of the Murat Shrine; we are the first person they will see when they
come in the door and to check their dues card at a Stated Meeting. They will
be able to meet new Shriners at every Stated Meeting, and also meet them
again at the door of the meeting room where we take up the word. We are the
unit that is at the disposal of the Potentate and the Divan. At the ceremonials,
we take care of welcoming the candidates and fitting them for their Fezzes.
Also, we like to see the older nobles at our meetings on the second Tuesday
of the month. We have had a low turnout at our meetings and we’d like to see
all of you back. Please contact a noble for a ride if you need one.
At the April meeting, we will be discussing the bylaws change and hope to
see all of you there.
The Sportsman Raffle is on Saturday, April 30, and the Reception Unit will
again be raffling a gun safe. If you can make it, we will appreciate your help.
We look forward to seeing you at the Stated Meeting on the second Tuesday
of the month.

Band
It seems like only yesterday we
were celebrating the new year. But,
we’ve already made it through St.
Patrick’s Day, sprung forward and
adjusted our clocks, celebrated Easter
and are looking forward to May and
the 100th Indianapolis 500 Race.
We continue rehearsing on
Wednesday evenings (except the first
Wednesday of the month).
As some of you already know,
the Murat Band is the oldest unit in
Murat, originating in 1898. With that
in mind, I will introduce you to some
current and former members of the
Band.
This month, I will tell you a little
about our president and associate
director, John Reed.
John is a resident of Hope, IN. He
Skip Rethmeier
is married and the father of three,
grandfather of five and great-grandfather of one. John was raised to the
sublime degree of a Master Mason
in Hope Lodge #150 in 1976. He’s a
former member of Scottish Rite Valley
of Indianapolis and has been a Murat
Shriner since 1988 and a member
of the band. He served as director in
1989.
Musically, John played in his high
school band at Hauser H.S. in Hope.
After graduating from Indiana University, he joined the United States Army
and made it a 20-year career. During
that time, he served as a member of
Army bands at Ft. Harrison, IN (three
different times); Heidelburg, Germany; Ft. Lewis, WA; and Camp Casey,
Korea.

The smell of spring is in the air as

Welcome Curt and Snookie!
With sadness we learned of the
passing of Ozzie Green on February

As you can see, John’s musical

And to everyone’s benefit, he is more
than willing to share that knowledge
with all of us.
John and the rest of the band sincerely invite anyone who is currently
active in music or who would like to
get reacquainted with their old horn

we’re all about.
See you at the Shrine.

Shelby County Shrine Club
The Shelby County Shrine Club
hosted its February meeting at the
Bluebird restaurant in Morristown.
The evening was in celebration of
Valentine’s Day with a dinner in
honor of Mr. and Mrs. Denny Fields
and Mr. and Mrs. George Hobbs. With
a combined 120 years of marriage
between them, a dinner in their
honor was a pleasure to host for our
Shrine Club. After dinner we had our
own special edition of the Newlywed
Game! Couples, Mr. and Mrs. Dan
Timothy L. Higgins II
Hunt, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Johnson, and
John Bryant and Lady Rhonda were
the contestants. After a series of great
questions, it appeared that John and
Rhonda knew each other very well!
A very special thank-you goes
out to Ms. Wendy Barrett for all the
decorating and dinner planning. Next
month we will meet at Sugar Creek
Lodge in Fairland for dinner. Please
take time to join your county Shrine
Club for dinner and we look forward
to seeing you all at the temple!

We are always seeking to augment
Ladies’ Oriental Shrine
Barbara Smith
Many of you may find it interesting to know that the Ladies’ Oriental Shrine
was founded in Wheeling, WV, in 1903 when the Ladies of Osiris Shriners were
invited to attend the social events and festivities surrounding Osiris’ Spring
Ceremonial. When the Shriners departed for their initiation ceremony, the ladies were having so much fun, they didn’t want to stop. So they surveyed the
hotel and in a joyous mood, began to parade through the halls. They eventually arrived at one of the hotel’s conference rooms. The doors were closed, a
guard was set, and within that room, with dignity and sincerity, and without a
ritual or prepared paraphernalia, the first session of the Ladies’ Oriental Shrine
of North America was held and Isis Court No. 1 came into being.
Our own Tarum Court #14 was formed here in Indianapolis in 1922 the
same year that the Shriners built their first hospital. Our ladies remain committed to supporting this Shriners philanthropy. To this day, we collect items to
donate to the hospitals, sew items for the children, and raise money to aid the
patients at the Shriners Hospitals for Children in many forms.
On April 3, 2016, the installation of Lady Dianah Markovich-Sparks, High
Priestess, and her court is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Arabian Room. This is a
public event and we welcome all who wish to attend to join us in the fun!
Please come and join us at the Murat Sportsman event scheduled for Saturday, April 30, from noon to 5 p.m. in the Arabian Room! We will have a table
along with other Clubs, Units and ladies’ organizations displaying their sporting opportunities! Our opportunity is the Colts Package with official jerseys,
jackets and lots of collectables. Come and join in the fun!
If you are interested in learning more about what we do to support the
children and have fun in the process, please contact Lady Andrea Lawson at
(317) 760-3489 or send her an e-mail at [email protected]. We are
always ready to welcome new members!
Remember to give your ideas wings and your imagination will soar!
22 our sound with good singers, so if
you have talent, come to a rehearsal
and see if the Chanters are for you.
Even if you are presently in another
choir or chorus, the Chanters can
make necessary accommodations for
your schedule. We are also putting
together a second quartet that will
be available to perform for smaller
groups. We welcome ideas for other
small groups, duets, skits, etc. to add
to the entertainment value for our
audiences. Come and be a part of us.
Voice tests are required and reading
music is very helpful. All performances are memorized to accommodate
choreography and better sound
production. Our ladies are welcome
at all of our rehearsals and public performances, and families are welcome
at many performances, including
conventions, picnics, social events
and competitions; so if your lady is
interested in filling out her social
calendar, the Chanters and Chanter
Ladies can help with that.
We start rehearsals at 7 p.m. on
TUESDAY evenings in the Corinthian
Room at the Murat Shrine Club, 520
N. New Jersey St., Indianapolis, IN
46204, and are usually finished by
8:30 p.m. Often we have dinner in
advance and sometimes there are
refreshments afterward, both in the
Oasis Lounge. Fun is included at no
charge. Hope to see you there. And,
