A
mbientata in una storica struttura, come nelle botteghe di un tempo, la Bottega di Via
Sarti, nel Borgo Pio, nei pressi di Piazza Garibaldi, è una tappa obbligatoria per i palati
più fini: ricca selezione di formaggi provenienti da tutta Italia; salumi che spaziano dalla
Cinta Senese tagliata a mano al Parma Sant’Ilario; affumicati di pesce tagliati appositamente per
voi e la vera mozzarella di bufala fresca di giornata. Le aspettative dei più golosi saranno poi soddisfatte provando i famosi dolci di Gaeta “Di Ciaccio” e i prodotti freschi da forno, oltre alle confetture, ai cioccolati e ad altre prelibatezze. L’assortimento della pasta artigianale è poi formato da
poche ma selezionate chicche e lo stesso vale per il vasettame, per i legumi e per gli olii e i vini.

l progetto “Terracina alta. Trovateci gusto” nasce con l’obiettivo di dare un contributo alla conoscenza di
quello che molti di noi ritengono essere un patrimonio culturale e artistico da valorizzare. Con questa
guida si vuole aiutare il visitatore ad approfondire la conoscenza del Centro Storico alto di Terracina attraverso il gusto della scoperta del bello e della buona tavola. Visto il successo degli scorsi anni ed il riscontro positivo avuto con le attività coinvolte, intendiamo, con questa nuova edizione, continuare a
portare avanti il progetto che, quest’anno, è arrivato alla sua quarta edizione. La guida, come sempre, è arricchita
di contenuti culturali forniti e curati dalla Sede di Terracina dell’Archeoclub d’Italia. Abbiamo, inoltre, aggiunto,
nelle schede delle attività, dei QR-code che, tramite Google maps, forniscono l’esatta posizione di ogni singolo
locale per un facile ed immediato raggiungimento. In più, la versione on-line della guida (www.terracinaalta.it) è
ottimizzata per una visualizzazione anche su tablet e smartphone, rendendo così ancora più semplice e comoda la
sua fruizione. Al centro della guida trovate la mappa del Centro Storico alto rivista e ridisegnata appositamente per
una sua lettura più chiara, che può essere facilmente estratta e consultata. Pertanto non resta che augurarvi buona
lettura ed invitarvi, come sempre, a venire a trovarci per conoscere meglio uno dei centri storici più belli d’Italia.

he "High Terracina project. Find your own licking” was founded with the aim of contributing to the
spread of knowledge of what many of us believe to be a cultural and artistic heritage that deserves to
be enhanced. This guide helps visitors to deepen their knowledge of the historic center of Terracina
through discovery of beauty and good food. Given the success of the past year and the positive feedback
with the activities involved, we intend, with this new edition, keep on pursuing the project that this
year is now in its fourth edition. The guide has been enriched by cultural content provided and edited by the Office of
Archeoclub of Italy in Terracina. We have also added, in the schedule of activities, QR-code that, via Google maps,
provide the exact location of each restaurant. In addition, the online version of the guide (www.terracinaalta.it) has
been optimized for a tablet and also smartphones version, making it even easier and convenient its fruition. Finally,
the map of the historic center, revised and redesigned specifically for a clearer reading of it, it is placed in the middle
of the guide to be easily extracted and red. There is nothing left for us to do but wish you good reading and invite you
to come and visit us to appreciate more about one of the most suggestive old town centers of Italy.

Porta Romana (l’ultima e anche l’unica porta urbica conservata quasi integralmente, costruita alla fine del XVIII sec.) è l’ingresso ovest della città storica. Da qui inizia il Corso Anita
Garibaldi, che ricalca il tracciato della Via Appia antica (ancora presente sotto il manto
di sanpietrini), che attraversava tutta la città e continuava verso est. È stata la strada più importante di Terracina non soltanto dal punto di vista urbanistico ed urbano, ma anche dal
punto di vista sociale e commerciale e, ancora oggi, è il punto di massima concentrazione di
negozi e botteghe. Se la si percorre con attenzione si scoprirà che la stessa strada rappresenta
un itinerario turistico-culturale molto interessante. Nel primo tratto che va da Porta Romana
ai “Torrioni” (dove era collocata l’originaria porta d’ingresso alla città antica, attuale Porta
Maggio), oltre alle diverse botteghe, di cui è possibile riconoscere l’impianto medievale, si
incontra, a destra, il neoclassico “Palazzo dei Forni” (fine XVIII sec.) e, a sinistra, sulla sommità della bella scalinata, la Chiesa del Purgatorio (fine XVIII sec.), con la sua caratteristica facciata tardo-barocca e rococò. Sul Corso sono poi presenti diverse domus e piazzette
medievali, case rinascimentali e palazzi sette-ottocenteschi.
The high street Anita Garibaldi, beginning from Porta Romana (the last urban gate almost entirely conserved, built in 18th century), is the western entrance to the historic town. The high
street traces the lay-out of the ancient Appian Way (still there under the stones “Sanpietrini”)
that crossed the whole town and continued in the south. It has been the most important way
not only in terms of urbanistic, but also for the society and the commerce, and today is still the
point of greatest concentration of shops and stores. It could be by itself a very interesting touristic
and cultural itinerary. In the first stretch, from Porta Romana to the “Torrioni” (where the first
gate, Porta Maggio, was located), apart from the many stores with their medieval structure, it’s
possible to see, to the right, the neoclassic “Palazzo dei Forni”, and to the left, on the summit of
a beautiful staircase, the church “Del Purgatorio” with its characteristic late baroque façade. On
the high street there are also a lot of typical roman houses and medieval places, mansions of
the Renaissance and sixteenth-seventeenth century buildings.

Il termine forum indicava, per i Romani, la piazza più importante di un centro abitato, il luogo
deputato alla trattazione degli affari, al mercato, il centro politico e religioso del nucleo urbano
stesso. Tutte caratteristiche ancora oggi pienamente conservate dal Foro Emiliano considerando che nell’attuale Piazza Municipio si trova la sede del Palazzo Comunale, edificato nel 1959 dopo i devastanti bombardamenti della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, e la Chiesa
Cattedrale di S. Cesareo, Duomo della città, nonché essere il luogo di incontro dei cittadini e dei turisti in cerca di un po’ di tranquillità, fuori dal caos della città bassa nei periodi di
maggiore affluenza. I disastrosi bombardamenti della Seconda Guerra Mondiale hanno consentito tuttavia di poter riportare alla luce le diverse testimonianze archeologiche dell’antico
Foro Emiliano: sono infatti ben visibili i resti del teatro romano e dell’annesso porticato,
il cosiddetto capitolium, l’arco quadrifronte e, soprattutto, il bellissimo lastricato originale del Foro con il tratto dell’Appia antica sul lato nord.
The word “forum” indicated, for the citizens of the ancient Rome, the most important square of
the town, the place dedicated to the business, the commercial transactions, the religious and
political centre. These characteristics are today conserved, because the square is the seat of the
municipal building, built in 1959, after the devastating bombing of the World War II, and seat
of the cathedral dome of S. Cesareo, meeting place for the citizens and the tourists who look for
some relax, out of the chaos of the town in the periods of the highest confluence. However the
devastating bombardments of the Word War II allowed to bring to light a lot of archaeological
remains of the ancient Forum. Clearly visible are the ruins of the theatre and the attached portico, the Capitolium, the four faced arch and, mainly, the wonderful original paving of the Forum
and a part of the ancient Appian Way.

Le antiche mura di cinta della città, di epoca volsco-romana (V-IV sec. a.C.), di cui rimangono molti tratti monumentali, furono completamente ricostruite nel V sec. d.C. Alla fine del
Settecento, quando la città fu smilitarizzata, una parte del camminamento di ronda venne
trasformato in via pubblica e le torri perimetrali in abitazioni. È possibile percorrere il camminamento partendo da Porta Nuova, alle spalle del Foro Emiliano, da dove, passando
per una stretta scala, si accede a Via delle Mura Castellane, lungo la quale si può apprezzare il panorama verso i monti Ausoni a nord della città, fino a raggiungere il tratto
dove la vista della Chiesa del Purgatorio offre uno sguardo ravvicinato e particolare della
sua architettura e, soprattutto, dove si gode la splendida vista panoramica verso le colline,
la Pianura Pontina, il promontorio del Circeo e il mare.
The ancient Volscian-Roman boundary walls (today there are only monumental traces) have
been rebuilt in the 5th century AD. At the end of the 18th century, when the town has been demilitarized, a part of the communication trench has been turned into a street and the lateral
towers into houses. It’s possible to go trough the communication trench starting from “Porta
Nuova”, behind the Forum, where, passing from a tight stairway, there is the access to “Via delle
Mura Castellane” and it’s also possible to enjoy the landscape of the hills and the mountains of
the north of the town, until reaching the part where the view of the church “Del Purgatorio”
offers a close look, highlighting the architectural beauties and, especially, the part where there
is the wonderful scenic view of the hills, the “Pianura Pontina” and the sea.

’Osteria “Le Muraccia” è allestita negli ambienti sottostanti di una delle
Torri di Guardia delle antiche mura della città. Il locale, nel tempo, era
stato adibito a frantoio di cui ne è testimonianza la vecchia ruota di
pietra lasciata in bella vista in un angolo del pavimento, sotto una teca di vetro.
Alle ‘Muraccia” potete gustare piatti a base di carni e verdure cotte alla brace nel
vistoso barbecue posto al centro delle due sale, accompagnati da una vasta
scelta di vini selezionati.
The restaurant “Le Muraccia” is placed in the low grounds of one of the watch towers of the ancient boundary walls. The restaurant, in the course of time, has been

of residents and the opening of some new restaurants, the historic centre is living a slow but
progressive rebirth of the production activity. Based principally on little but interesting artisanal
enterprises, most of all run by women, many shops and workshops treat the manufacture and sale of
artistic, antique, clothing and collectibles products. Walking on in old town, among medieval houses
and historical mansion, the stores with their shop-windows cheer up the promenade, and give the

Come arrivarci
Il modo migliore per raggiungere il Centro Storico alto, una volta arrivati in città, è sicuramente a piedi. Pur se
con strade in salita, infatti, le distanze da percorrere sono brevi, con tratti suggestivi e pieni di sorprese. Si può
salire, partendo dal piazzale delle autolinee, da Via Posterula e, costeggiando i “giardini” di Palazzo Braschi,
passare sotto lo splendido platano che consigliamo come sosta per assaporarne tutta la sua frescura nelle caldi
giornate estive. Arrivando alla stazione dei treni, se non si hanno pesanti bagagli al seguito, ci si può invece
dirigere verso Porta Romana e percorrere per intero il Corso Anita Garibaldi di cui ne potrete scoprire le diverse
bellezze architettoniche e storiche. Altra possibilità, ma solo per chi non si lascia scoraggiare dalla pendenza, è
di fare la “Salita” (Via Annunziata), che saprà ripagarvi della fatica, una volta arrivati in alto, con la bellezza
dello scorcio panoramico che si vede da Piazza Domitilla, con l’imponente facciata del Palazzo della Bonifica
e dalla suggestiva veduta che vi si aprirà nella storica Piazza del Municipio, centro del Foro Emiliano.
Se non per estrema necessità, quindi, sconsigliamo di salire in auto; anche perché è sempre difficile e, per molti
tratti vietato, sostare e transitare direttamente nelle strade interne del Centro Storico alto dove, tra l’altro, nel
periodo estivo entra in vigore l’isola pedonale che ne impedisce totalmente l’accesso ai veicoli. Pertanto potete
tranquillamente parcheggiare nelle aree indicate sulla cartina ed avviarvi a piedi; o seguendo i percorsi indicati o
“perdendovi” per altre stradine e scalinate che vi porteranno comunque a destinazione.
How to get to the old town. The best way to reach the inner city, once arrived in Terracina, is walking up. Albeit uphill
roads, in fact, the distances are short, with suggestive stretches, full of surprises. From the bus station you can climb Posterula way and, walking along the "gardens" of Palazzo Braschi, pass under the magnificent plane tree that we recommend as a stop to savor all fresh shadow it provides during the hot summer days. From the railway station, if you do not
have heavy luggage, you can instead go towards Porta Romana (Roman gate) and pass through Corso Anita Garibaldi
(Anita Garibaldi Avenue) where it will be possible discovering the diverse historical and architectural beauty. A third way,
but only for those who are not deterred by the slope, is to "Uphill Road" (Via Annunziata), which will repay the effort,
once on top, with the beauty of the panoramic view from Piazza Domitilla (Domitilla square), with the imposing facade
of the Palazzo della Bonifica and the striking view that you will find in the historic Piazza del Municipio (Town Hall Square),
the center of the Foro Emiliano (Emilian Forum). If not necessary, therefore, we do not recommend getting into the car,
because it is always difficult and, in many places not allowed, stopping and passing directly into the internal streets of
the inner city where, in summer enters into force the pedestrian precinct that prevents all access to vehicles. Therefore
you can safely park in the areas shown on the map and proceed by walk, or by following the above ways, or "roaming
around" to other streets and staircases that will take you to your destination anyway.

in collaborazione con l’Ente locale e con il Museo Civico, svolge da sempre una complementare attività di fruizione
dei beni culturali attraverso un apposito Servizio denominato “Visite Guidate Culturali”. Basato essenzialmente
su un programma di “Itinerari Monumentali” , disponibile anche in forma cartacea e digitale, esso rappresenta
una delle più qualificanti attività di valorizzazione del patrimonio cittadino. Tale servizio, di carattere permanente,
viene effettuato, secondo precise modalità operative, attraverso un’articolazione annuale che tiene conto delle
esigenze dei diversi utenti (studenti, cittadini, turisti, ecc.) ed in coordinamento con le specifiche iniziative nazionali promosse dall’Archeoclub d’Italia e dal Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali (la “Settimana
della Cultura”, i “Musei aperti”, le “Chiese Aperte”, “Conoscere i Beni Culturali”, “Giornate Europee del Patrimonio”,

cooperation with the local authority and the Civic Museum, has always carried out a complementary range of activities around the cultural context through a special service called "Guided Cultural Tours ". It mainly offers a program
of "Monumental Tour", also available in hard copy and digital, it represents one of the most decisive measures to
exploit the town's heritage. This permanent service, , is realized according to a specific operating through an annual
plan which takes into account the needs of different users (students, residents, tourists, etc..) and in coordination
with the specific national initiatives dall'Archeoclub of Italy and the Ministry for Cultural Assets and Activities (the

Oltre alla monumentale e affascinante Piazza Municipio, non sono da trascurare le belle
piazzette del Centro Storico alto che, negli ultimi anni, sono state al centro di diversi interventi
di recupero urbano con l’obiettivo di restituirle all’uso pedonale. Le diverse piazzette conservano tutto il fascino della città medievale e moderna, ospitando vari edifici e palazzi storici,
molti dei quali restaurati e sistemati di recente. Tra le più caratteristiche ricordiamo la Piazzetta Campo dei Fiori, dove spiccano interessanti architetture romaniche; la piccola
Piazza Cancelli, caratterizzata dalla presenza di un bell’esempio di casa gentilizia del XIII
sec.; la Piazza Domitilla, unica piazza moderna del nucleo storico, in cui è ben visibile la
facciata principale del Palazzo della Bonifica; la Piazza De Tassis, con l’ingresso di
Palazzo Braschi; la Piazzetta Porta Nuova, con la cinta muraria antica e medievale;

Apart from the monumental and charmed “Piazza Municipio”, there are many other squares in
the historic centre that has been in recent times renovated to give them back the pedestrian use
they used to have. All the squares have conserved the medieval charm and the fascination of
the modern period, hosting many buildings and historic mansions, most of them renovated.
Among the most peculiars there is “Piazza Campo dei Fiori”, with its interesting Romanesque
architectures; the little “Piazza Cancelli”, with a wonderful example of aristocratic mansion of
the 13th century; “Piazza Domitilla”, the only modern square with a historic core, with the
façade of the “Palazzo della Bonifica”; “Piazza de Tassis” with the entrance of “Palazzo Braschi”,
“Piazza Porta Nuova” with the ancient and medieval surrounding wall; “Piazza Assorati” and
“Piazza Cipollata”.

In the characteristic setting of Porta Nuova square, behind the Capitolium (an ancient temple of the first century BC), you can sit at the table of the new wine bar,

La Salita dell’Annunziata prende il nome dalla medievale Chiesa di S. Maria dell’Annunziata (fine XIII sec.), ubicata lungo la via all’incrocio con la Via del Foro Severiano. Essa
costituiva la parrocchia del Borgo murato posto fuori la perduta Porta Albina. La chiesa, oggi
proprietà comunale, conserva un elegante campanile a vela (la cui campana bronzea è custodita
nel Museo Civico) ed un raffinato portale in pietra in cui spicca l’architrave scolpito con un fregio
a girali riportante il nome dell’autore. La Salita Annunziata ricalca un tracciato stradale antico che
collegava la città alta a quella bassa e al porto; nel medioevo collegava la città alta al Borgo della
Marina; nel Settecento collegava la città alta al Borgo Pio e al porto restaurato. È una salita che
anche ai più allenati risulta sempre ostica ma, una volta sopra, ci si può riprendere sorseggiando
un po’ d’acqua alla fontana di Piazza Domitilla e godendosi la facciata del bel Palazzo della
Bonifica (sede degli uffici della Bonificazione Pontina dalla fine del ‘700 alla prima metà del ‘900,
è stato di recente restaurato e ospiterà il nuovo museo cittadino), dopo aver superato i due monumentali leoni funerari (“i cavallucci”), attrazione dei tanti bambini che passano di qui. La salita
prosegue poi verso Piazza Municipio passando accanto ai resti dell’antico arco quadrifronte di
accesso al Foro Emiliano da est, dove è visibile il basolato dell’Appia Antica.
“Salita dell’Annuziata” takes its name from the church “S.Maria dell’Annunziata” (13th century),
located at the cross road with the “Foro Severiano Way”. It was the parish Church of the walled-up
village out of the lost “Porta Albina”. The church, now municipal property, conserves a charmed bell
tower(its bronze bell is conserved at the Civic Museum) and an elegant stoned portal with a wonderful carved architrave, decorated with a plant volute frieze indicating the name of the author.
“Salita dell’Annunziata” was the link, in ancient times, of the historic town with the new one and
with the harbour, in the Middle Age the historic town to the village, and in the 18th century, the
historic town to “Borgo Pio” and to the renovated harbour. It’s a tiring slope, but once arrived up
there, it’s possible to regain energy drinking from the fountain in “Piazza Domitilla”, enjoying the
wonderful façade of “Palazzo della Bonifica” (seat, at the end of the 18th century, of the Land Reclamation Authority, it’s been recently renovated), next to the monumental “Leoni Funerari” (i cavallucci), attraction for the kids. The slope is now a little bit sweeter until “Piazza Municipio”, passing
near the remains of the four face arch, where it’s clearly visible the basolato (a particular kind of
stone from volcanic rocks) of the Appian Way, that continues on the edges of the square.

la strada che collegando la città bassa con quella alta, nel versante orientale, e riallacciandosi all’Appia antica, consente di proseguire fino alla sommità
del Monte S. Angelo, dove si trovano i resti dell’antico Tempio di Giove Anxur (area
archeologica e monumentale che è possibile visitare). Salendo, a partire da Piazza della
Repubblica, si passa al di sopra del Borgo Pio di cui è ben visibile, sulla sinistra, la cupola
della Chiesa del S.S. Salvatore (XIX sec.). Percorsa a piedi, in assenza di traffico, quando
il sole, basso, colora i tetti delle case, la strada restituisce quelle atmosfere che è possibile
trovare in alcune stampe del Settecento. Nelle giornate in cui l’aria è pulita e il cielo è terso,
da Via S. Francesco nuova si possono riconoscere chiaramente tutte le isole dell’Arcipelago Ponziano (S. Stefano, Ventotene, Zannone, Ponza e Palmarola) fino ad Ischia (l’isola
più grande che si vede). Superato il Parco “della Rimembranza” (salendo sulla destra),
la strada si divide in una biforcazione: continuando dritti si sale fin sopra il Monte; a sinistra,
il breve tratto di strada in discesa (Via S. Francesco vecchia) si collega alla Salita dell’Annunziata conducendoci fino a Piazza Municipio.
It’s the longest way that, linking the new town with the one on the east side, joining the Appian
Way, goes on until the summit of the ancient “Tempio di Giove Anxur” (archaeological and
monumental area). Rising, starting from “Piazza dell Repubblica”, it’s possible to see in the “Borgo
Pio”, on the right, the dome of the church “S.S. Salvatore” (19th century). Going trough it on foot,
in the absence of traffic, when the sun, going down, gives colour to the roofs of the houses, the
way gives back the atmosphere of some typical prints of the 18th century. During days with a
fresh air and a clean sky, from the San Francesco Way it’s possible to recognize the islands of the
archipelago “Pontino” (S.Stefano, Ventotene, Zannone and Ponza) until the island of “Ischia”
(the biggest one). Rising on the right, surpassing the “Parco della Rimembranza”, the way is divided into a bifurcation: going straight, the way leads to the mountain, and on the left, the brief

vineria propone una cucina a Km zero con menu a base di pesce e di
carne, non trascurando la tipicità della carne bufalina, carpacci, sfiziose insalate,
formaggi e salumi scelti con particolare attenzione alla stagionalità dei prodotti.
I piatti di pesce sono realizzati unicamente secondo la disponibilità del pescato
locale e la carta dei desserts è curata personalmente dai proprietari. Nella bella

L’attuale Via Posterula nasce, alla fine del Settecento, come “Rampa Braschi”, dopo le
demolizioni della cinta muraria tardo antica, per collegare il Palazzo Braschi (sede estiva
di Papa Pio VI) e la città alta all’Appia Nuova e al Borgo Pio (la “città nuova”). La costruzione del Palazzo Braschi interessò l’intero fronte sud della Piazza Grande (ora Piazza Municipio), con l’acquisizione e la ristrutturazione di notevoli architetture storiche, come il
rinascimentale Palazzo De Tassis, la sconsacrata chiesa medievale di S.Maria in Posterula e parte delle sostruzioni della piazza antica, trasformate nelle Scuderie Braschi e
nella grande Terrazza del Belvedere. La strada conserva ancora oggi il fascino di una
volta: percorrerla in alcuni momenti del giorno, magari poco prima del tramonto, quando il
sole illumina la facciata del Palazzo Braschi, con lo splendido panorama verso il mare, fa ritrovare l’atmosfera riprodotta nel famoso dipinto di J. P. Hackert del 1795.
The Posterula Way was born as “Rampa Braschi”, at the end of the 17th century, after the wrecking of the late ancient surrounding wall, to link the “Palazzo Braschi”(summer seat of the Pope
Pio VI) and the historic centre to the New Appian Way and to Borgo Pio (the new town). The setting-up of Palazzo Braschi involved the whole south face of the “Piazza Grande” (now “Piazza
Municipio”), with the restructuring of many historic buildings, as the mansion of the Renaissance
De Tassis, the deconsecrated medieval church of “S.Maria in Posterula”, and many other buildings
in the ancient square, changed into the “Scuderie Braschi” and into the great “Terrazza del
Belvedere”. Today the way has got the same charm that it once had: going through it, possibly
before the sunset, when the sun shines on “Palazzo Braschi”, ricreates the atmosphere of the famous painting of J.P. Hackert of the 1795.
