The year also saw an impressive range of research achievements, across both the staff and student communities. Among a number of research awards for UOWD faculty members was a grant for a multinational collaboration to work on a pioneering project aimed at developing ‘Brand UAE’. The AIB-MENA Network has had another successful year with the publication of the third volume of its Case Studies book series and the presentation of a number of awards, including the 2013 Award for Inspirational Leadership, which this year honoured HE Sheikha Lubna Al Qassimi. We also take pride in the numerous outstanding achievements by our students in 2013, which included the development and launch of several smart phone apps aimed at supporting disadvantaged groups or promoting community engagement. In Researcher’s Corner this year are Dr Kathy Ning Shen, Associate Professor in Information Systems, and Dr Feras Hamza, Associate Professor in International Studies, while UOW visiting Professor Brian Ferry provides a report on the UOWD Doctoral Program. We hope you enjoy reading about our research highlights for 2013. Professor Trevor Spedding President - UOWD 2 Scholar New Appointments Dr Abdelghani Benharref Joined: 1 February 2013 Position: Assistant Professor Dr Sidney Lowe Joined: 7 January 2013 Position: Associate Professor Dr Mohammed Firoz Joined: 24 February 2013 Position: Associate Professor Dr Mohan Guruswamy Joined: 1 February 2013 Position: Assistant Professor Picture Picture Dr Gregory Kerr Joined: 13 March 2013 Position: Associate Professor Dr Shahper Vodanovich Joined: 1 September 2013 Position: Assistant Professor 3 Scholar HDR Update from visiting Professor – Brian Ferry, University of Wollongong Australia In June 2012 I was invited to come to UOWD to support a new Doctoral Program that was managed by the Faculty of Business and Management. I made my first visit in September of that year and stayed at UOWD for one month. Since then I have visited in January 2013, March 2013, September 2013 and January 2014. Initially my role was to support HDR students and their supervisors to prepare students for proposal presentations; advise on ethics applications, HDR process and procedures, and provide workshops for supervisors. Over time this role has evolved to include advice on HDR policy, publications and thesis milestones, and this role will continue to develop as more students pass their comprehensive exams and enrol in their thesis. Currently there are 35 students enrolled in the Doctoral program (24 DBAs and 11 PhDs). 16 Students have passed their comprehensive exams and have enrolled in their thesis. Another 6 took their examinations in February 2014. I have been very impressed with the commitment of students and the dedication of their supervisors who show that they have the depth of knowledge and intellectual creativity to be excellent supervisors of research. The Doctoral students have shown that they have the persistence, the intellectual curiosity and resilience needed to be successful as HDR students and I look forward to some graduating in 2015. Already I have seen that students are active in their research and are publishing in refereed journals and conferences and this can only enhance their reputation as well as that of UOWD. From my perspective, it is both a privilege and pleasure to work with the staff and students at UOWD. Further, 45 years of experience in various international education settings convinces me that the quality of work that I see at UOWD is as good as anywhere in the world. I look forward to continuing to support this important program in future visits. 4 Scholar HDR Student Profiles Hanan al Mehairi Hanan al Mehairi came to UOWD with strong credentials and she has been adding to these ever since. After being awarded a Distinction with honours Bachelor degree in Applied Sciences and in Applied Media Communications from Dubai Women’s College in June 2008, Hanan earned her Master in Strategic Human Resources Management at UOWD. Hanan is now enrolled in the PhD program, where she is planning to research the impact of culture on knowledge sharing. In addition to her studies, Hanan has been building her academic career by attending academic conferences in Chicago, Greece, Turkey, Las Vegas, and Washington DC. Hanan has also presented papers at professional conferences, such as the 2nd International Conference Sports Vs Crime, organised by Dubai Police in 2009. She was also invited by Ibda’a forums to share her experiences with an audience of Saudi women in 2013. Most recently she was invited as a guest of honour to share her experience in knowledge management at the 17th Global Women Leaders Forum that was organised by Datamatix in March, 2014. Hanan was awarded the Alumni of the Year 2013 at Dubai Women’s College and was honoured by HH Sheikh Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum. Mardeya Al Balooshi PhD student Mardeya Al Balooshi took to the stage at the ERA ranked Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM) Conference 2013 to present preliminary research related to her doctoral studies in the field of human resource development. Emirati student Mardeya, who is pursuing a PhD alongside her job as Head of Performance Management at Dubai Police Academy, is among the first of UOWD’s PhD students to showcase their early research findings on an international platform. Under the conference theme, ‘Managing on the Edge’, Mardeya presented her paper entitled ‘Creativity training programs in the UAE government sector: lessons from the literature’. The paper highlighted the significance of creativity training programs within the UAE and suggested directions for measuring the impact of such training based on scholarly literature and best practices around the world. Mardeya’s paper was selected for the conference proceedings in a competitive stream, which involved a rigorous double-blind review process by academic experts in the field. She was among a line-up of distinguished scholars and practitioners at the 27th edition of the annual ANZAM conference, held in Hobart, Australia. 5 Scholar Focus on Faculty Researchers’ Corner Dr Feras Hamza My research philosophy My philosophy is fundamentally driven by the belief that the humanities and social sciences are more relevant to us than ever before, especially in an age of mass media, technology and postindustrial knowledge economies. Education, which is at the core of what is considered ‘human capital’, is at a critical stage and its apparent commodification suggests that vocational training is sidelining what traditionally has been the forte of educational institutions such as the university, that is to say, social training. This is especially true of the region because of the urgency of industrial and technological ‘catch-up’, but is also increasingly evident globally, which in turn helps to explain the recent re-emphasis on the humanities in the academic institutions in the West. Having trained in the history of the Near East, in the somewhat recondite field of late antiquity and the coming of Islam, I am always eager to convey to my students the importance of historical studies and the critical thinking required to reconstruct pre-modern societies and identities in order to understand our very own contemporary ones. So, in short, we do a lot of history in all of my classes, whether discussing social change in the Middle East, globalisation and citizenship, political economy, or even research methods. My research outcomes Because of my background in history (and my earlier training in modern languages and literature) I am interested in how we think and how we write about our chosen topics of study. I bring these interests to bear on the study of Islamic societies both pre-modern and contemporary. Some of my recent research has focused on re-examining the hermeneutics underpinning much of (Western) academic writing on key Islamic texts (Qur’anic commentaries) and dubious taxonomies (such as ‘esotericism’) used to make sense of certain genres of medieval Muslim literature. A larger piece of work is a study of ‘Community and Identity in early Islam’ and this pre-modern study reinforces and helps to shape my current thinking on Muslim identities in the current age of mass media (or mass self-media, as M. Castells has it). In this respect, my pre-modern research outcomes have fed my interests in the contemporary scene. My research experience Most of my research experience was gained during graduate studies at Oxford University’s Oriental Institute where I completed a master of philosophy and a doctorate; but an invaluable 1-year period was spent at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Dr Feras Hamza, Associate Professor in International Studies, Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences Princeton where I was fortunate enough to meet and learn informally (but profoundly) from giants in various humanities and social science fields (G. Bowersock for late antiquity, P. Crone for Islamic history, art historian O. Grabar, cultural anthropologist C. Geertz, M. Walzer in political philosophy). I then spent several years teaching and researching at the Institute for Ismaili Studies in London where I oversaw and co-authored the first volume of a major multi-volume project with Oxford University Press entitled Qur’anic Studies Series, in addition to entries in the revised edition of M. Eliade’s old Encyclopaedia of Religion. My research projects Apart from my ongoing research into the medieval Islamic tradition, I am currently involved in two exciting contemporary projects. The first of these together with one of my grad students in International Studies is a mixed-methods research project that seeks to understand contemporary Islamic notions of religiosity and identity by looking at the phenomenon of new Islamic media (esp. televangelism and ‘religious celebrities’) particularly through Islamic channels and shows on cable networks and mainstream TV both in Pakistan and the UAE. These two contexts will provide initial case studies for a wider phenomenon situated within a larger scholarly debate about a supposedly emergent Muslim public sphere and the fragmentation (or reconfiguration) of traditional religious authority (cf. the ulema). What makes this study exciting is the intersection therein of several disciplinary discourses about religious authority, identity, media, the culture industry, consumerism and the commodification of religious praxis. The other project is a long term collaboration with Kalam Media and Research’ (headed by the Libyan Ambassador to the UAE, Dr Aref Nayed), a think tank dedicated to reviving the tradition of intellectual discourse globally across Muslim educational institutions by editing, translating and publishing key philosophical texts. 6 Scholar Focus on Faculty Researchers’ Corner Dr Kathy Shen My research philosophy Science is the pursuit of truth, of explanation, prediction, and control of a phenomenon. Heavily influenced by my mentors back in Peking University as well as City University of Hong Kong, my research mainly follows positivism paradigm, which is to obtain truth from the scientific method containing both logic and evidence that are consistent with each other. With years of practice and service to the academic community, I also develop the appreciation for the alternative paradigms, which help alleviate some dilemma rooted in single paradigm approach. Another important principle that guides my research activities is to balance rigour with relevance. Being a scholar in an exciting emerging economy brings a lot of opportunities to make significant contribution to both business practices as well as existing theories. This affects how I select my research topics and the research approaches. The overall objective is not only to apply existing theories to explain local phenomena, but also to conduct indigenous and integrative research. My research outcomes My main research areas include human-computer interaction, applications of information systems in organisations, e-marketing, virtual communities, and knowledge management. I have published more than 60 referred journal and conference articles. My work has appeared in top refereed journals such as Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, Journal of Business Research, and top conferences in the field, e.g., The Summer Marketing Educators’ Conference (American Marketing Association), International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS). Since 2009, I have been serving as the Associate Editor for Information Systems Journal, one of top journals in information systems field. I have been actively engaging in indigenous research in the UAE. My research has been funded by Emirates Foundation (2 projects on social media and virtual collaboration) and Dr Kathy Ning Shen, Associate Professor in Information Systems, Faculty of Business National Research Foundation (1 project on information system assimilation in organisations). I successfully obtained five additional research grants, including two from the UOWD Research Grant as PI (moving luxury brands online and IT assimilation), two from Zayed University as co-PI (knowledge transfer and social networks, and cultural impact of Facebook usage) and one from Educational Strategies Development Fund (ESDF) in University of Wollongong in Australia as co-PI. My research experience I started my research training in Peking University, taking a method course and working as a research assistant for Prof Anne Tsui, the one who inspired me to be a scientist and gave me a strong recommendation to pursue a research degree. Meanwhile, I also participated in several research projects where I got an opportunity to work with Prof Mohamed Khalifa in Hong Kong. He is another important mentor who not only taught me how to do research, but also how to be a professional scholar. He encouraged me to explore various topics and research methods, which resulted in two different theses over 3 years for my Master of Philosophy and PhD, and several journal and conference publications during my study. 7 Scholar Later, working as a faculty member, I have the full independence and autonomy, which is both challenging and exciting. In addition to continuing my research during my doctoral studies, I developed several new projects on organisational usage of information systems, and social media user behaviour, and started to learn how to collaborate with other scholars. In 2009, I was invited to serve as Associate Editor for Information Systems Journal, and this helps me keep updated with the most recent publications and methods in the field. Since 2010, with the Doctoral program in the UOWD, I’ve got a chance to work with students from different backgrounds, which further expands my research horizon and challenges me to enter related disciplines. My research projects My current research is broadly classified into the following streams. One stream of work continues my existing research interest in online consumer behaviour and social media, such as online branding, and user behaviour with social media. With the wide application of social media and internet channels, how to construct desired brand experiences online is a great challenge for most brands, particularly for luxury brands. My research explores the effect of aesthetic website design on the sense of luxury experienced with a luxury brand website, and subsequent customer-based brand equity. Moreover, the results show some cultural differences between Chinese and India in that they value different aesthetic dimensions in experiencing a luxury brand. This research can be replicated and expanded to the other platforms and internet applications to examine their impact on branding. With my doctoral students, we also developed several projects on government support for Dubai SME growth, airport retailing, and information security compliance. Such research projects address the important issues/challenges faced by Dubai government and private sectors. The expected outcomes will have great implications for policy making and/or management practices. My future research goals Given the increasing influence of China in the region and the UAE, one of my future research goals is to continue promoting and advancing Chinese management in the region. Such research responds to the urgent demand for understanding Chinese subsidiaries and Chinese management in the region, but also bridges the gaps in current literature. MENA region (Middle East and North Africa) is considered as a strategic overseas market. UAE gathers the subsidiaries or regional headquarters of most Chinese international companies, providing a great opportunity to conduct Chinese management research in a unique cultural, social, and economic context. Such research not only helps Chinese companies to better operate in overseas markets, but also provide great insight for the local stakeholders to work with Chinese companies. I also hope to complete all my research projects involving local government agencies or private sectors and seek further expansion and support from stakeholders. Such projects have great potential to impact policy making and to strengthen the connection between UOWD and local community. In addition, I have developed a solid collaboration with the Management School, Peking University to investigate the Chinese international companies. In 2013, we successfully conducted the first collaborative research on expatriate compensation and control in Chinese subsidiaries in the UAE, which is also funded by the National Research Foundation in China. Our research received great interest and great support from major Chinese companies operating in UAE. The results also show significant theoretical contribution to existing literature on expatriation and subsidiary management. 8 Scholar AIB-MENA The Academy of International Business – Middle East North Africa Chapter (AIB-MENA) has been incubated by the University of Wollongong in Dubai since 2009. AIB-MENA, which is the regional Chapter of the global Academy of International Business organisation, was established to promote research activity from and about the MENA region. The group has held three conferences, and produced four books and numerous teaching cases and journal articles. AIB-MENA’s case study collection has recorded over 10,000 downloads worldwide, primarily across Malaysia, Australia, South Africa and Hong Kong, representing 15% of all downloads for the Emerald Group’s emerging markets collection. HE Sheikha Lubna Al Qassimi presented with inspirational leadership award by AIB-MENA Early in 2013, Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Al Qassimi, the UAE Minister of Development and International Cooperation, was presented with the second annual AIB-MENA Windtower Award for Inspirational Leadership. The award was conferred by The Academy of International Business – Middle East North Africa Chapter (AIB-MENA), in recognition of Sheikha Lubna’s ongoing support and encouragement for the volunteer-led academic organisation. It is one of a series of honours presented annually by AIB-MENA, recognising the outstanding leadership of businesses and individuals across the MENA region. The AIB-MENA leadership award is inspired by the characteristics of the ancient traditional architectural device, the windtower, which, like an exceptional leader, stands stoically against the elements, channelling them to better use and providing guidance and motivation, particularly in times of uncertainty. Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna has been voted the most powerful Arab Women by Forbes. In conferring the award, AIB-MENA specifically recognised her work as a champion of the Region and of women in particular. Since its inception, AIB-MENA has been using women entrepreneurs to help initiate and organise its three major regional conferences. The award also coincided with the publication of AIB-MENA’s third Volume of the Case Study Book ‘Actions and Insights Middle East North Africa – East Meets West’. The book documents several interesting cases, including how Mohammed Saeed Harib (of Freej fame) started out and how Aramex PJSC grew from a start-up to a global player in the logistics and express transportation service industry. Aramex and Americana Group receive AIB-MENA award for community development Two leading MENA-based businesses were honoured for their commitment to community development at an award ceremony hosted by UOWD, in collaboration with the Middle East and North Africa Chapter of the Academy of International Business (AIB-MENA). Aramex PJSC and Americana Group (Egypt) were the recipients of the AIB-MENA Ghaf Tree Award, which is presented annually to recognise the efforts of regional businesses towards the spirit of collaboration and community development. Distinguished representatives of the two companies – Mr Fadi Ghandour, 9 Scholar Founder and Vice Chairman of Aramex; and Mohamad Farouk Hafees, Executive Vice President, HR and Management, of Americana Group – attended the award ceremony, which was presided over by His Excellency Pablo Kang, the Australian Ambassador to the UAE and Qatar. Inspired by the indigenous desert tree growing in hostile conditions, spreading its branches to create smaller ecosystems and encouraging the creation of life under its shelter - the AIB-MENA Ghaf Tree Award recognises companies that actively foster collaborations and support sustainable regional development, while continuing to deliver on shareholder expectations and managing the ongoing challenges of socio-economic and geo-political change. Both Aramex and Americana Group were recognised for their strong commitment to community development, while continuing to grow and thrive as businesses in uncertain economic times. Dr Melodena S. Balakrishnan, President of AIB-MENA and Associate Professor at UOWD said, “We recognise local businesses that are agents of positive change; that embrace their roots and commit to the locations they are based in. Aramex has adopted a model for social activism that more businesses can embrace.” Ratan Tata receives AIB-MENA leadership award for 2014 In December 2013, a UOWD delegation visited India to present Mr Ratan Tata with the 2014 AIB-MENA Windtower Award for Inspirational Leadership at a ceremony held in Mumbai. The honour was conferred by The Academy of International Business – Middle East North Africa Chapter (AIB-MENA), in recognition of both his business leadership – as Chairman of the Tata Group – and his inspirational actions in the face of adversity. The Award was presented by Dr Melodena S. Balakrishnan, President of AIB-MENA and Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD), and the ceremony was presided over by UOWD President, Professor Trevor Spedding. Mr Tata was the Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, from 1991 until his retirement in December 2012. Under his leadership he transformed the enterprise to a worldwide conglomerate. Mr Tata remains associated with various business organisations in India and overseas and is the chairman of the Tata Trusts, among the largest private-sector-promoted philanthropic trusts in India. In presenting the Award, Dr Balakrishnan said, “When the AIBMENA and AIB-India Chapters joined hands and decided to hold a joint conference, we looked at those Indian leaders who made a splash in the international business community. Ratan Tata steered the Tata Group to grow revenues to cross USD 100bn – 40 times the revenue when he took over – and 4 times the profit. “He showed foresight and strategic acumen with the mergers and acquisitions, whether Daewoo, Tetley Tea, Corus or Jaguar and Land Rover. These were across different countries and different industries, and in consolidating the Tata global brand, it became an ambassador for India. He continues his dedication to humanity as chairman of the Tata Trusts and for all of these reasons and more, we are honoured to present this award to Mr Ratan Tata.” 10 Scholar Research Achievements Ranked Journals, Research Excellence Awards, Research Grants, Research Seminars, Conferences attended by UOWD Faculty, External Grants. • UOWD 2013 Ranked Journals Journal Articles 2013 A Ranked Journal 6 B Ranked Journal 3 Other Ranking 20 Total Number of Articles 29 • Research Excellence Awards 2013 Dr Mohammed Watfa received the Research Excellence Award for 2013 at the Autumn 2013 Graduation Ceremony held on 30 October 2013. Ali Razzouk and Diana Hassanova are the students behind the MetroMate App, which provides a comprehensive and userfriendly guide to the Dubai Metro, alongside a range of other handy features, all of which can be accessed without an Internet connection. time to destination information for all operational stations on the Dubai Metro. It is available in both English and Arabic and also includes a smart station detection system to locate the station nearest to you. What’s more, there is no need for an internet connection, as the App works even when you’re offline.” The App also has a unique Nol balance tracker, which allows users to keep up to date with their credit and receive notifications when it is running low. The interface is inspired by the Dubai Metro stations and the design blends seamlessly with that of the stations’ interior. The pair hope that MetroMate will help to improve the user experience across the Metro system and ultimately increase Metro travel across Dubai. Ali, a Bachelor of Computer Science student at UOWD explains, “This App is intended to take the guesswork out of Metro travel by providing an accurate, real-time schedule to help users find the next and last trains, as well as journey times to their destination.” Diana, a Bachelor of Commerce student, has taken on the role of raising awareness of the App amongst students and other potential users. She explains, “MetroMate is a free to download App that provides accurate train timings, last train alerts, and GITEX Competition success for UOWD graduates Ali Payani, Khalid Al-Najjar and Marlen Bissaliyev competed against nine other groups of finalists to take away the second prize of AED 20,000 for their technology innovation, the ‘APD.3 Auto Phishing Detector’. Sponsored by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs and organised in collaboration with Google as part of its commitment to supporting education initiatives, the Student Lab Competition aimed to recognise and promote the brightest and most innovative ICT students and recent graduates from across the region. A team of three graduates from UOWD were ranked first amongst UAE competitors and second overall in the inaugural GITEX Student Lab Competition. Ali, Khalid and Marlen entered the first round of the competition in June 2013 with their Auto Phishing Detector, a solution that detects malicious web content and alerts and protects users 15 Scholar from phishing attacks. From hundreds of original applicants across the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, the three graduates were selected to take part in the finals of the event, which saw them showcasing their innovation in front of leading industry professionals at the GITEX Exhibition between 20 and 24 October. The UOWD team impressed the panel with the innovative elements of their solution, as Ali explains, “The tool is unique in that it operates as an add-on for current browsers, ensuring that it can run on multiple platforms. It is also able to detect non-reported phishing sites, which can significantly reduce the risk of zero-day phishing attacks.” UOWD Computer Science graduates provide ‘Hope for Children’ are few and far between for the new entrepreneurs, but they both felt they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to use their passion for technology to make a difference. Their winning App in the grooming category, ‘Groomar’, helps students learn how to clean their teeth, bathe and wash their faces, while their ‘Matchalon’ App, which won in the semantics category, teaches students how to match up items and sequence them together. Having trialled the working prototypes of the two Apps with children at the Centre, the final products are now under development. A team of two graduates from UOWD took first place in a competition to create user-friendly Apps for children with special needs based at the Al Noor Training Centre in Dubai. Shawn revealed, “We knew we couldn’t assume anything about useability when developing these kinds of Apps, so it was the best feeling when we saw the children interacting with the App and working through the exercises just as we’d envisaged.” Shawn Frank and Ronak Dave, both UOWD graduates of Computer Science, were the overall winners in two categories of the App development competition, which was part of Samsung’s ‘Hope for Children’ program. From over 180 applicants, Shawn and Ronkan were shortlisted among the top twenty developers and won in two out of the five categories grooming and semantics. As technology enthusiasts, Shawn and Ronak are in the early stages of setting up their own web development business, which already boasts an impressive client list. Spare moments Conference paper success Kirolos Ayad and Marina Helmy presented a paper titled, ‘Design of an optimised crane location system for construction sites’ at the 9th Annual International Joint Conferences on Computer, Information, Systems Sciences & Engineering, in December 2013. Under the supervision of their mentors Dr Soly Matthew Biju and Dr Abdullatif Tchantchane, the paper was an extension of their final year project which won second prize at the 2012 Software Development Tradeshow. The paper describes an application designed to facilitate the crane locating process by converting the engineer’s expert knowledge to computerised system-embedded knowledge. The application gives engineers the right location of where the crane should be positioned, the number, model(s) and type(s) of cranes. 16 Scholar Government, Industry and Community Collaboration UOWD among founder members of MENA Association of University Presidents Professor Trevor Spedding, President of the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD), joined representatives from 16 other universities across the Arab world to mark the official launch of the MENA Association of University Presidents. The Association has been created to promote collaboration in the advancement of higher education in the MENA region, by establishing a dynamic network of university officials that can stimulate debate and influence policy on emerging trends in the sector. As a founder member of the group, UOWD joins universities representing ten different Arab nations, including Jordan, Oman, Morocco, Kuwait and Palestine. Along with our partners in this Association, we aim to build the foundations for innovation and advancement across the sector, focussing on the key issues that will impact the growth of higher education in the coming years, including governance, quality, technology, research, and learning outcomes.” On the signing of the Association, Professor Spedding said, “We are pleased to be one of the founder members of this significant regional network, which will provide an important platform for strategic debate and collective thinking on future policies and practices affecting higher education in the region. Students’ software helps underprivileged children in Uganda A team of students from UOWD has designed, developed and delivered a new software program to teach English as a second language to rescued children in Uganda. The Early Years Application (EYA) software, which uses artificial intelligence to create interactive learning exercises, was developed by a group of Information Systems students at UOWD, in collaboration with an Early Years teacher at Deira International School (DIS) in Dubai Festival City. The software went through a rigorous testing phase by UOWD at the school, before being deployed to an orphanage in Uganda, allowing underprivileged children to interact with technology and benefit from computer software in ways they would never normally experience. Dubai, English language skills can provide a vital means of communication for children from many nationalities. We never imagined the project would be so successful and the software would travel so far, and we are very happy that our work has gone on to make such a difference to the lives of these young children.” The EYA program is the first undergraduate project from the UAE that has ever been deployed to help disadvantaged children in sub-Saharan Africa, and that will continue to be used as a teaching aid for their education in the future. The EYA program was developed by Keerthi Prasad, S.M. Mushfiqur Rahman, and Redwan Hasan, as part of their final year studies at UOWD. The application won the People’s Choice Award at the seventh annual Software Development Tradeshow held at UOWD in June 2013. Keerthi commented, “We set out to address one of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals – universal primary education – because in a multicultural society such as 17 Scholar UOWD trio’s award-winning App to help in the fight against obesity A team of three UOWD students has developed an awardwinning mobile App, which will help fight obesity through social interactions. Hassan Bello, Murtaza Waheed and Ashiq ur Rahman are the students behind Cenna, the innovative app that is already attracting national recognition. The team has recently been awarded second prize at the prestigious Microsoft Imagine Cup UAE, and were crowned winners of the Purpose Award for the ‘Most socially impactful, economically viable and sustainable business idea’ at the Business 4 Change Conference, led by Pepsico and Al Ahli Group CSR Division. The term Cenna is inspired by the Latinized name of the great Muslim scholar, Ibn Sina or Avicenna, often known as the Father of Modern Medicine. The App places social interaction at the forefront of the fight against obesity, along with other fundamental tools such as diet and exercise-tracking, to achieve a healthy lifestyle. The social interaction is divided into three groups. The anonymous group allows users to share personal stories, while protecting their identity from judgment or scrutiny. The public group, in contrast, allows users to share stories about their progress and compete with their friends and other members of the community in reducing weight. Finally, the experts group is where the users have direct access to health and fitness experts who can respond to their queries. “Cenna was not an epiphany,” said Ashiq ur Rahman, an Accounts major at the University and primary designer of the application. “It was inspired by the difficulties the team has been battling themselves, along with many others - friends, families and loved ones - to live healthy lifestyles and to make the right choices to stay fit.” UOWD professor among team of researchers working on a national brand for the UAE Dr Melodena Balakrishnan, Associate Professor at UOWD is among a team of researchers from the UAE, Hong Kong and the USA, which has been awarded a two-year research grant to create and launch a national brand for the UAE. The multinational team showcases international and interuniversity collaboration and includes marketing experts from Zayed University, UOWD, George Washington University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and the Academy of Arts University, San Francisco. The researchers bring a multidisciplinary skillset including expertise in tourism and hospitality, marketing in industry, and international communications strategy. for students of the universities involved to take up research internships on the project. The research team will go on to examine other place branding initiatives, such as ‘Incredible India’, and conduct quantitative and qualitative assessments of stakeholder and customer perspectives, before going on to develop the final brand. The research team also intend to disseminate their findings through international conference papers and journal articles. The project team are due to deliver their findings and unveil ‘Brand UAE’ in early 2015. Inspired by the call from the Prime Minister’s Office to develop a place brand design for the UAE, the team submitted a bid to the Research Incentive Fund (RIF), a competitive grant scheme administered by Zayed University. The team was successful in securing an award of AED 65,200 to research the concepts surrounding place branding, and ultimately come up with ‘Brand UAE’. The first phase of the research involves building the brand architecture – identifying the components and values that represent the essence of the UAE, and that people elsewhere can relate to. These initial activities will provide opportunities 18 Scholar UOWD Publications Summary Books Book Chapters Conference Papers Journal Articles Periodicals/Other 1 11 19 30 1 Books Balakrishnan, M.
