JAKE FRASER,
DYNAMIC TATTOO
“I basically painted what I thought Melbourne was
to me,” says Dynamic Tattoo’s Jake Fraser, “which
is live music, coffee and football.”
While many cities around the world boast
such virtues, the 30-year-old reckons it’s
Melbourne’s easy ability to mix together the arts
and sport that sets it apart. “I feel like it’s a very
creative and energetic city to be in,” he
says. “All you need to do is walk down
the street here in [inner eastern suburb]
Richmond to notice that pretty quickly.
Every shop is a bar or a cafe now!”
Fraser’s distinctive style, with its bold
lines and refined use of colour, was
established during a stint tattooing in
America. “The shop I worked for there was
pretty renowned for that traditional, oldschool tattooing. I’d like to say I’m pretty
diverse, but when people come to me
they usually want that traditional style.”
Fraser loves getting to the football,
galleries, and any one of the many
punk rock venues in and around
town. Still, his first love is surfing
and the often-forgotten breaks that
exist just outside of the city.
“I find that easy and
comforting,” he says. “In
Victoria, you can drive an
hour and find an uncrowded
wave, which isn’t the way
farther north. The beaches
are terrific.”

“All of the skills that I’ve accumulated have

honed in Sydney,” he says. “So Sydney is a bit
of a landmark place in terms of career.”
Sprinkles’s intricate work is heavy on symmetry
and incorporates splashes of colour, leaning on
influences from American artists such as Justin
Hartman and Jeff Gogue, as well as Melbournebased illustrator and designer Ken Taylor.
“Ultimately, though, I like to think my style is my
own,” he says.
Sprinkles laughs when describing himself as
a “bit of a street kid”, spending nights cruising
the byways near his Glebe private studio, or
enjoying a quiet view of Sydney’s skyscrapers
from one of the waterside parks on the northern
side of the suburb. That’s when he’s not enjoying
a couple of quiet drinks at the Forest Lodge
Hotel (forestlodgehotel.com.au) or checking out
the latest exhibition at nearby amBUSH Gallery
(ambushgallery.com).
“Sydney is always moving,” Sprinkles says.

Brisbanites can forget how lucky they are
to call the Queensland capital home.
“They go on about how it’s not
as cultured as, say, Melbourne,” the
Tasmanian-born 31-year-old explains,
“but the city has lots of things that they
forget about. There are the City Botanic
Gardens (tel: 07 3012 9606) up here, as well as
