William Quaid Spanish American War
Name: William Quaid Sojourn: Spanish American War Date of Enlistment: May 1898 – August 1898 Company: Captain Woodbury Kane’s Troop K, 1st volunteer Cavalry of the United States (Rough Riders) Rank: Private Battles: Invasion of Cuba: Las Guasimas, San Juan Hill, and Kettle Hill Captain Woodbury Kane The Rough Riders were assembled Painting of the Battle of San Juan Hill in May 1898, and were sent to Port Tampa, Florida for the invasion of Cuba. Because of transportation issues, only Troops A, B, D, E, F, G, K, and L were actually sent to Cuba. The Troops were forced to leave the horses behind as well, so they fought as an infantry regiment in the invasion of Cuba. Quaid’s troop fought at Las Guasimas, in which the Spanish retreated after about two hours of fighting. Troop K also fought at the battles of San Juan and Kettle Hill, where the US Army besieged the two fortified hills, and went on to begin a siege of Santiago. The Spanish surrendered Cuba to the US on July 17th, and on August 15th the Rough Rider Troops in Cuba were brought back to America, worn out and diseased, but honorable and legendary. Map of the Battle of Santiago William Quaid died in 1921 at the age of 83, and is buried at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newburgh, NY. He had a wife, two sons, and one daughter. http://www.spanamwar.com/lasguasimasnewspaper.html http://www.findagrave.com/cgi- bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Quaid&GSfn=William&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&G Rid=117506694&df=all http://www.bartleby.com/51/ak.html http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/the-battle-of-san-juan-hill http://research.archives.gov/description/301297 Created by Heather Cerul
