GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE by Shane Newton, PGA
Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. We finally get
a break from the summer heat and are able to enjoy being
outdoors again. Plus, here in Lake Arrowhead, the spectacular
fall colors are unbeatable!
We have another great fall planned here at Lake Arrowhead.
We began with the new Lake Arrowhead Community Market,
which is our community’s farmers market. Then we had
another great Dive in Movie at Red Cloud pool for Labor Day weekend. Next
will be our first Health and Wellness Expo planned for October 3rd here at the
clubhouse. Later in the month we will have our third Family Fall Festival on
Saturday, October 26th.
Through your continued support of the community, we are able to grow our
established events and even add new ones. With all these activities going on,
we have a little something for everyone. Remember, you can always help us
make these great events better by letting us know you plan to attend in advance.
This is especially important on the new events.
So, thank You for making our community better every day! It is exciting to see
our community grow not only in residents but in great activities and events. Our
growing community is another one of the many great reasons for living in Lake
Arrowhead.

NEW EXPANDED POOL SCHEDULE!
Both pools are now open until 9:00pm on their regualrly scheduled open days. Swim
at your own risk 7:00pm to 9:00pm on Moday-Thursday and 8:00pm to 9:00pm FridaySunday. We also plan to keep at least one pool open until the end of Cherokee County
School’s Fall break. Last day either pool would be open will be Sunday, September 22nd.
This plan may change due to weather and/or lack of usage. Pool passes are available at
the clubhouse in the Golf Shop during business hours. (Pool passes and Lake Arrowhead
photo ID’s are required for pool entry.)

operated by the North Georgia Angel
House Inc. We believe that in order to be

and bolts of running a business. Angel
House wants their girls to experience
lower, middle, and upper management
in order to succeed in life.

3RD ANNUAL FAMILY FALL FESTIvAL
Mark your calendars for SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26TH. Come join us for the third
year of this great event! The day includes planned activities for the whole family
showcasing the many amenities throughout Lake Arrowhead. The fun begins at
10:00am with family fun at the Great Festival Park featuring children’s games
and activities, pontoon boat rides at the Marina for spectacular Fall views from
the lake, and an Arts and Crafts Fair at the Clubhouse showcasing the many
talented artisans at Lake Arrowhead. Later that day, there will also be a “Rides
of LA” car show at Great Festival Park beginning at 12:30pm. Most of the events

Congratulations to Tim and Diane O’Pry,
this month’s winner!
Tim and Diane met in the Air Force in the early 70’s and have
been married for almost 38 years. Tim is a retired DeKalb County
Police officer that now works in the tech industry, mostly from
home. Diane was a computer programmer, but 'retired' to stay
home and raise their two (now adult) children. They ended up
in LA - just by happenstance and good luck. From mid-2008 to
October 2009 they looked at most every home that was for sale,
focusing initially only on lake homes. Their realtors and now LA
neighbors, Tom and Nyle Srok, showed immense kindness and
patience over their many visits, which resulted in the purchase of
the so-called 'Green home'. [Green as in eco-friendly].
As for the yard - they moved-into the neighborhood in April 2010
and the initial design and landscaping was done by Eric Hill of
Autumn Hill nurseries in Canton. Each Spring and Fall since, they
have made a few adjustments and changes and now do all of the
maintenance themselves.
Some may think that deer deterrent quackery might be their
hobby, judging by the flashing red lights, faux coyote and
other assorted things they’ve tried - but they prefer to call it
persistence! Sooner or later, the deer or they will capitulate
(odds are currently in favor of the 4-legged banditos)!

THE HIGHLANDS COURSE
BLUE TEAM WINS 2013 HIGHLANDS
CUP IN SUDDEN DEATH PLAYOFF by James Hatcher
After the completion of 45 matches over two days, a sudden-death playoff was
needed to determine the winner of Lake Arrowhead’s 2013 Highlands Cup Golf
Tournament. In what was obviously the most competitive event in the 5 year
history of the Tournament, the Blue Team won the playoff and earned bragging
rights, at least until this time next year.
The Highlands Cup is an event dreamed up by Ward Brimmer and a few other
golfers about 5 years ago to spice up Lake Arrowhead’s golfing experience
through some good-natured competition among Golf Club members.
Modeled after the Ryder Cup between U.S. and European golf professionals,
the Highlands Cup has two captains who are responsible for selecting team
members, setting tournament rules, and working with Golf Club management
on Tournament details. This year the Blue Team Captain was Rick Salese and
the Red Team Captain was Dale Sommer. Initially, each Team included 12
members but as interest grew, it was expanded to 16 members last year and
18 this year.
This year’s Tournament
was held on August
16th and 17th. Matches
on the first day of
competition were
played by 2-person
teams in three different
formats—best ball,
alternate shot, and
scramble. Second
day matches were
all singles. At the
end of competition,
the two Teams were
unexpectedly tied 22 ½ to 22 ½. After some negotiations and checking of
predetermined Tournament rules, each Captain selected two golfers to
compete in a sudden-death playoff to break the tie. On the first hole of the
playoff, KYLE COPELAND (above right) and MIKE JOHNSON (above left) of the
Blue Team defeated Brad Jones and Eddie Woody of the Red Team to claim the
coveted victory.
As in any competition there is usually a winner and a loser. While that is
certainly the case in this situation, as a participant I can truly say that all I saw
was friendly competition among friends and neighbors. Even after the event
was settled, there might have been some good natured ribbing but everyone
was having fun, looking forward to the next day of golf in wonderful Lake
Arrowhead.
Special thanks to all the Highlands Club staff in the
Pro Shop and Restaurant for all they did to help
make the Highlands Cup a successful and fun event.
Other Notes: Special congratulations to Ralph
Lumpkin who had a hole-in-one on hole #8 during
the Tournament.

2013 MEMBER-MEMBER RECAP

On July 20, thirty-six Lake Arrowhead golf members played in
the 2013 Member-Member Golf Tournament—twelve more
than played in the 2012 Tournament. Always competitive,
this year’s Tournament was no exception. Only two strokes
separated the first and second place winners in both the “gross
score” and “net score” competitions. There was also a separate
ladies competition for the first time in recent years.
The Member-Member Golf Tournament is an annual event
where golf club members form 2-person teams to compete for
trophies and prizes plus the honor of being named Tournament
champions for the year. The Tournament format is known by
several names (four ball, best ball, and better ball) but whatever
it is called, it essentially requires each team member to play
their own ball. At the end of each hole, the lowest individual
score is recorded as the team score.

Brad Sweetwood & Mel Standley
Mel Stanley and Brad Sweetwood won the “gross”
championship with a scorching 3-under par score of 69. Eric
Sanders and Brad Jones earned second place with a 71. After
factoring in each player’s handicap, the “net” champions, with a
scorching 54, were the husband and wife team of Ray and Suzie
Champitto. They edged out John Harcharic and Rick Warnke,
who shot a 56. In the ladies division, teammates Nyle Srok and
Julie Pyles grabbed the title with a net score of 64.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s MemberMember Tournament and helped us to once again increase
participation in a great Golf Club event!

COUPLES NINE AND DINE by Suzie Champitto, LGA Events Chair
The LGA hosted their first mixed Nine and Dine on August 3, 2013. The divot repair “Think Green” event was a great success! There
were 18 couples, dressed in green, ready to learn how to repair a divot and go play golf! Mike Kaiser gave a quick lesson on how to
properly repair a divot and we were off! Most couples stayed for dinner and tasted our specialty green drink—the Divot Digger—
created especially for this event by our very own Kamon!
There were prizes handed out to the first, second, third and fourth place winners, and two for closest to the pin.

There was also a prize for the most divots repaired, which went to Bob and Jeanne Hall, Charlotte Duggan, and Johnny DeLoach.
The next LGA Couples Nine and Dine theme will be “Are You Ready for Some Football?!” on September 14! Dress in your team
colors/jerseys and decorate your carts. There will be a prize for the most creative cart. Everyone is invited! Grab a partner and
call the pro shop by September 12 to sign up. Dinner is optional; contact Suzie Champitto to RSvP for dinner. There will be dinner
selection sheets to fill out when you check in to play. Everyone is looking forward to another LGA couples golf mixer! Thank you for
making our last event such a success!
On August 4, 2013 after many years of playing golf, Eleanor Gibbons’ white Pinnacle ball flew through
the air, landed, and with one hop, went into the hole. Her FIRST hole-in-one!!!! Eleanor was playing with
her wonderful husband, George, and great friends Ray and Suzie Champitto. The hole in one took place
at Lake Arrowhead Yacht and Country Club on hole #11. A pitching wedge was used for the 90 yard shot.
Keep on hitting that little ball. It can happen to you!
Twas a Saturday night at the couples “Think Green,” All the fun people gathered and made a big scene,
The Champitto’s and Bennett’s had a shotgun start, So they headed for 11 in a broken down cart.
Ray teed off first and hit a great ball, And knew he would be the closest of all,
The Bennett’s went next and swung loose and free, Then Suzie, our hero, headed straight for the tee.
Her practice swing cut through the air like the pros, The confidence showed from her head to her toes,
She stared then pointed straight toward the hole, Something was happening I could feel it in my soul.
Suzie started her swing it was smooth as crystal, Then down came the club toward the ball like a pistol.
The ball left the tee as if shot from a gun, Straight as an arrow toward the evening sun.
It sailed through the air like the flight of a willow, Then came down on the green as soft as a pillow.
Then took a slight bounce and a slow forward roll, And as we all watched headed straight for the hole.
Our excitement was growing and we all just kept gazing, When the ball hit the hole it was simply amazing.
We all screamed for joy, it was the first of her life, I’ve never been prouder, of Suzie, my wife.

Scramble) Once again meet with us at the beautiful and challenging Lake Arrowhead Highlands Course.
Your participation is very important because it enables the church to help the kids in our own community. In fact, 80% of the
proceeds go to children’s programs right here in Cherokee County. Last year we were blessed to donate over $15,000 to the following
charities: Goshen valley Boys Ranch, Angel House, Operation Christmas Child, MUST Ministries children’s needs, Give A Kid A Chance,
Hope Center, and local middle and high school children’s needs, as well as others.
The tournament begins with registration and breakfast at 8:00am and the shotgun start is at 9:00am. Immediately following the

Mark your calendars for November 2nd from 8:00am
to 12:00 noon. We will have a prize for the most bass
measuring 12” or less and the largest bass caught. We
will have a judge boat available during the tournament
to weigh and take photos of any bass caught over 12” to
facilitate releasing the large bass back into the lake.
STOPPER KNOT REGATTA
October 26th | 9:30am to 12:00pm
The Boat House will be hosting the Stopper Knot Regatta on
Saturday, October 26th from 9:30am to 12:00 noon. It is a
fundraising event for the Hands Across the Sea charity. This
charity supplies school books to 29 Caribbean grade and high
schools. This is part of a national fundraising event sponsored
by the American Sailing Association.
The event consists of using one of our Walker Bay day sailors
and sailing a stopper knot course around two buoys. The
fastest person to complete this course is the winner. They will
have their name engraved on a plaque that hangs in the Boat
House for all to see.
This event is open to all sailors ages 15
to 80. Spectators are encouraged.
Donations are accepted.

The 2013 Annual Membership Meeting is only a month away. As fast
as time is flying, Saturday, October 19th will be upon us before we
know it! Our Nominating/Review Committee is ready and waiting
for candidates to keep coming forward. This being an odd numbered
year, three slots will be filled by the candidates receiving the most
votes.
In 2012, the LAPOA By-Laws were revised to make it clear that any
member in good standing can be a candidate. Last year, to fill four
positions for full 2 year terms, and one to complete the second year
of a term, the slate ended up with seven candidates. That led to a
good competitive slate and we look forward to another one this year.
Before last years’ annual meeting, anytime we voted, the proxy of
283 lots for Lake Arrowhead Communities (LAC) was used to either
vote on By-Law changes or to count for our quorum. Prior to the
2012 Annual Meeting, the Board decided not to use the LAC proxies
for that meeting or any future meetings. This placed our members
in a position that made it necessary to provide enough votes to meet
our 10% quorum requirement of 164 votes last year. The members
came through in a big way by casting 188 votes. That response was
greatly appreciated.
This year we are asking for the same outstanding response. To assist,
the Absentee Ballots will be placed in easy access locations and in
the Lake Arrowhead Magazine, and also be available by making a
request for a ballot to [email protected]. You will be notified of
the locations well ahead of time. Regular Ballots will be available at
the meeting.
The Board is looking forward to a full slate of candidates and a great
response from members to better last years’ voting totals.

FALL ARTS FAIR OFFERS SOMETHING UNIqUE EvERY YEAR
I’m not an artist but I like and appreciate original arts and crafts. Every
year I’m delighted to view the creative works of the artists, artisans and
authors of Lake Arrowhead. Last year, I found two special arrangements
of wild grasses accented by wooden stars made by Sue Heppel. I’ve
placed those arrangements on my front porch for both Christmas and
Fourth of July observances. The handmade arrangements are stylish and
unique.
I wore a pair of leaf-shaped earrings to a recent patio party. A couple of
friends noticed the earrings and wondered where I had found them. “At
the Lake Arrowhead Fall Arts Fair,” I answered. The earrings were made
by Carolyn Stearns, a polymer clay jewelry designer, who also writes and
teaches courses on polymer jewelry making.
Look around my kitchen and living areas, you’ll see a poplar wood salad
bowl, black walnut cutting board and antique fishing bait display board
by wood turner Ted Nesbitt; a Cherokee dream catcher by Dana Hall;
four Adirondack-style cedar chairs and table by Jim Stearns; a painted
gourd decorative accent by Cande Massengale; a plaque featuring a
carved wooden big mouth bass on the wall going into our “bass” room;
a fashionista-worthy semi-precious stone bracelet by Kathy Bradford in
my jewelry box; a needlework scarf by Carolyn Burkholder in the closet;
and on the wall over my computer desk, a framed print of a pen and ink
drawing by Jim Bennett of one of the lovely streams on the golf course
that has claimed more than a few of my golf balls.
Those are just a few items I found at last year’s Fall Arts Fair. There were
many more fun and impressive pieces exhibited and sold during the
event. The artists, artisans and authors who participate in the Fall Arts
Fair are all Lake Arrowhead neighbors and their families. At last year’s
show there were a variety of talents showcased, including: Jim Bennett,
an artist who does pen and ink drawings, water colors and acrylic
paintings; Kathy Bradford, a jewelry designer who works in sterling silver
with crystals and semi-precious gemstones; Carolyn Burkholder, an
artisan/author who does photography, decoupage, knits and fashions
scarves and purses; Barbara Jean Deaton, a stained glass artist, who
makes custom-designed stained glass windows and also teaches and
offers stained glass repair services; Dana Hall, an artisan who makes
fashion jewelry and Indian dream catchers; Tom and Sue Heppel, who
create unique arrangements, stained glass slumped bowls and trays,
fused glass sun catchers and wind chimes; Cande Massengale and
Allison McGury, a mother and daughter duo who create folk art painted
gourds and fun jewelry; Ted Nesbitt, who makes frames, message
boards, cheeseboards, bowls, wine bottle stoppers and more from
Southern hardwoods and beams salvaged from the old Lake Arrowhead
by Tommy C. Simmons Arts Fair Committee
clubhouse; Carolyn and Jim Stearns, who do the polymer clay jewelry
and classic wood furniture; Chuck Swann, who does flint knapping and
crafts knives and bark baskets using ancient Cherokee Indian skills; Dick
Wallsinger, an artisan who meticulously carves European-style clocks
and decorative plaques depicting Lake Arrowhead wildlife.
Already for the 2013 Fall Arts Fair, new Lake Arrowhead resident Jeannie
Everett has signed up to exhibit her acrylic and watercolor paintings.
She says she enjoys doing portraits and pet portraits and her work is
featured on her website, www.mypetsportrait.net.
There are still exhibit space openings for the Fall show. The date
is Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lake Arrowhead
clubhouse. Cost to exhibit is $25. To reserve a space, send check for $25

KAYAKING ADvENTURES ON OUR BEAUTIFUL LAKE ARROWHEAD!
If you could create one of the best times ever without leaving Lake
Arrowhead... would you do it? Well I did! When I first saw the e-mail
from the Boat House offering a 2.5 hour kayak trip around the lake for
$29.00, I couldn’t click my mouse fast enough. Kayaking was something
I had never done before... and at my age I try to get out of my comfort
zone with every chance I get.
I blocked off the day and the time, informed my husband, Craig, and
waited for his response. Much to my surprise, he was willing to give it
a try. Little did we know how much fun we were going to have right in
Lake Arrowhead!
As we watched and listened to the weather report every day during the
week leading up to our special Saturday on Lake Arrowhead, we saw
pictures of clouds and rain in the forecast. We were focused on being
positive with the anticipation of trying out a new sport. This proved to
be helpful and convincing and we planned to participate and stop only if
we heard thunder or saw lightening!
We arrived 15 minutes early and were met by Barbara Deaton who
instructed us to sign release forms, choose our favorite team color
life jackets and reviewed some important lifesaving techniques by
Captain Rob. I rarely think of what could happen negatively so it was
great to have experienced instructors to educate me and pull me into
the reality of boating. With a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere I
couldn’t wait to get into our kayak. However, before we left the shore,
we were introduced to our “crew”: Captain Rob instructed us on some
more safety tips. John Poidevant was our “experienced sailor” to guide
by Linda Hoffman, Certified Health Coach
and instruct us when we were out of Captain Rob’s reach. K.C. Renfro
was a “16 year old teen participant” who demonstrated how to be
rescued if our kayak overturned (I hope he would be around if this ever
happened to me!). We traveled inside the buoys and were free to enjoy
our surroundings, the calmness of the water, the peacefulness of nature,
and frequent instructions and mentoring from John, “our experienced
sailor”. In addition, we had Rebecca Strobl, EMT, on hand to watch
us and guide us with her protective eyes (along with her camera for
frequent snapshots). What better way to capture this great experience
to share with others! Her husband, Dr. Gary Strobl, escorted us with a
pontoon. With all of the professional support, it was easy to try this new
experience and feel very safe.
We continued to venture all around the lake and visited coves we had
never entered before now. Feeling the water with my hand as we glided
along the smooth waters reminded me of when children play with water
running through their hands. How often do we get a chance to do that
as adults? As we headed back, I had regrets that our special outing was
about to end. Our 2.5 hour excursion ended at just the right time. Just
about the time we came ashore, the clouds started to sprinkle and we
headed home. But we were going back with memories and gratitude for
the new friends we met and the knowledge and protection we received.
Before leaving, Barbara informed us of the special priced packages
available to Lake Arrowhead residents. If you are inexperienced or
experienced at boating, it is time to take advantage of what we have
right in our own community. You will be glad you did!

1/2 cup chopped fresh chives (about 1 small bunch)
Finely grated zest of 1 lemon
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
4 ounces soft goat cheese, crumbled
12 ounces dried egg fettuccine
4 ounces wax beans (about 2 cups), trimmed and halved lengthwise
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook as the label directs, adding the wax beans to the
pot during the last 3 minutes of cooking. Reserve 1/4 cup of the cooking water, then drain
the pasta and beans and add to the bowl with the vegetables.
Drizzle with the reserved cooking water and the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil and toss
until the goat cheese begins to melt. Add the parmesan and toss. Divide among bowls and
top with the remaining goat cheese.

All watercraft operating in the northern part of the lake, as well
as other areas designated with NO wake buoys, must use a
speed that generates no significant wake in the water and NEvER
exceeds the speed of more than 5 MPH.
All watercraft are to follow COUNTERCLOCKWISE direction,
crossing the lake only at either end or in the middle, near the
clubhouse.
All watercraft pulling someone must either have three (3) persons
aboard (one drive, one safety observer and one being pulled) or
the watercraft MUST be equipped with a wide angle rear view
mirror. All people being pulled MUST wear approved U.S. Coast
Guard life vests.
All occupants of canoes, rowboats, rubber rafts, paddle boats,
etc. should wear life vests.
All watercraft MUST have running lights on after sunset.
No swimming is permitted from or in the vicinity of the dams on
the lakes. All children below a responsible age swimming in the
lakes MUST wear a life vest and be supervised by an adult 18
years of age or older.
Personal Watercraft (i.e. Jet Skis, Wave Runners, and SeaDoos) are
PROHIBITED on both lakes.

WHEN A TREE FALLS IN LAKE ARROWHEAD

One of the many nice attributes of the Lake Arrowhead community is
the abundance of trees. Trees also are a major maintenance task and
headache for some homeowners. Let’s clarify a few misnomers about
trees and property rights.
The law in Georgia treats trees as a naturally occurring part of the
environment. Trees are also considered differently with respect to
liability for damage to property. When a tree from your neighbor’s
property falls and causes damage on your property, you are responsible
for any damages on your property and you are responsible for the
cleanup of debris on your property. So if the tree from the house
next door smashes your car, your insurance company is involved to
compensate you for damages; if the tree puts a hole the roof of the
house, again your insurance would review the claim on the tree that is
now on your property. There is one circumstance when your neighbor
might be held accountable for damages on your property.
If the tree is ‘visibly dead or diseased” and the neighbor should have
reasonable knowledge there is a threat for damage of the property of
others, then the neighbor could be liable for the fallen tree. We have
many owners who do not frequent the property on a regular basis
and may not have any knowledge that their tree is now a threat to
others. To help your neighbor and to also protect your property rights
communication is the first step about any tree that a reasonable person
would think might cause damage to the property of another.. So, what
do you do?
If a tree is visibly dead or diseased and, you as a layperson can see this
danger, put the information in writing to the owner of the tree. Pictures
also help to get the point across. Send the owner a letter with as much
information as possible and give them your contact information. Put this
all in writing even if your best friend lives next door and you told them
about the tree. Documentation is the first step to protecting your rights.
Keep a copy of the letter in case the tree later falls as this would be
‘notice’ the other person may be responsible for the damages.
We all hope that no tree falls and causes any damage. Remember a
few simple proactive steps on the part of each property owner will help
reduce the headache of the fallen tree should this happen to you or your
neighbor.

residing in Lake Arrowhead) is a highly recommended

aquaponics operation. Chris’ unique knowledge of
business, engineering, farming and aquaponics was
clearly an opportunity. Ironically, at that time he was
looking for an investor as well as a partner to start a

SPIDER SAFETY

This is the time of year where the Georgia sun
heats everything up and many insects seek
refuge from the hot summer. They often retreat
to shaded areas like rock piles, logs, and dark
undisturbed corners of garages / homes. Piles
of leaves, pine straw, landscaping plants and our
thick forests also constitute excellent homes for
these Lake Arrowhead residents. The purpose of
this article is to educate the reader on how to identify the two dangerous
spiders that reside in North GA and what steps to take if bitten by either
species.
The two spider species that the reader needs to be concerned about
are the female black widow and brown recluse. First, we will discuss
the female black widow spider. Her favorite outdoor spaces include:
woodpiles, rubble piles, underneath stones, inside hollow stumps,
bathrooms, and garages. She loves to call undisturbed cluttered areas
in basements or crawl spaces home when she is seeking refuge from
our hot GA summers. She is known as a cobweb spider, is black, and has
a red hourglass marking on the underside of her abdomen and about
a ½ inch long. The hourglass marking color on the abdomen ranges
from yellowish orange to red and its shape ranges from the classic hour
class to a dot. Next, we will discuss the Brown Recluse spider. It is not as
particular as the female black widow in regards to what it calls home. It
likes to build small cobwebs behind objects of any type and pretty much
anywhere. It is about ¼ to ¾ inches long, golden brown and has a dark
violin / fiddle shape on the top of its leg attachment region with the
neck of the fiddle pointing towards its abdomen. The following website
(http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/spiders/ ) is a great tool to assist the
reader in learning more about these spider species.
The same precautions can be taken to prevent spiders’ bites from both
these species of dangerous spiders. The first step involves wearing the
proper clothing. It includes wearing long sleeve shirts, pants, hat, gloves
and boots when working with stored boxes, firewood, lumber, firewood,
pine straw, leaves, flower beds and rocks. The second step centers upon
inspecting and shaking out the above mentioned clothing to ensure
there are not any insects inside them or on them before putting them.
The final step involves using insect repellents on your clothing when
working in areas where you suspect many of these spiders have made
their permanent home.
Now, we will discuss what signs and symptoms can be present with
these bites. The common signs and symptoms of a black widow spider
bite include: minimal to sharp pain at bite site with swelling and
redness, one or two small fang marks. More serious symptoms can
include: muscle cramps, chills, fever, nausea, vomiting, sweating, and
abdominal / chest / back pain, headache, severe high blood pressure
, difficulty breathing or shock. The common signs and symptoms of a
brown recluse spider include: stinging and redness at the bite site, a blue
or purple area surrounded by a whitish ring and a large red outer ring.
The more serious symptoms of the brown recluse caused bite include:
fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, abdominal pain, joint pain, overall
weakness, rash and muscle cramping.
These steps can be applied to being bitten by either type of spider. 1)
Clean the bite area with soap and water (2) Remove all jewelry, swelling
of area will make removal later very difficult (3) Apply ice to the bite area
to slow absorption of the venom (4) Seek emergency medical attention
(911) immediately.
Hopefully, the reader will take the time to investigate the suggested
website, view the photos associated with this article and exercise
caution when gardening, landscaping in the yard, working in the garage,
spring cleaning in their basements or hiking in our woods.

BRING THE OUTDOORS INSIDE WHEN ENTERTAINING by Tommy C. Simmons, an enthusiastic cook
ATLANTA -- Designers, party planners, gift
shop owners and retailers will agree that
outdoor spaces are “in.” However in Georgia,
it’s often too hot, humid or mosquitoey to
comfortably entertain outdoors, so hosts
and hostesses are looking for new ways to
bring the outdoors indoors for late summer
and early fall parties. Three experts in
entertaining, Lolita Healy, founder of Designs
by Lolita painted glassware, Jeanna Graham of A Legendary
Event (an event planning company) and Emily Henderson of
HGTv’s Design Star program shared their ideas and tips on how
to create indoor patio parties and tabletops that pop at the July
Home and Garden Show at the AmericasMart market showroom
center in downtown Atlanta.
Keep your menu simple. If planning a brunch, instead of laboring
with an egg dish, offer a yogurt bar. Fill bowls with an assortment
of fresh fruits, nuts, grains, cookie crumbs, etc., have squeeze
bottles of honey and a couple of ground spices, such as cinnamon
and nutmeg, and let your guests make their own yogurt parfaits.
For a late afternoon gathering, you could have a focaccia or
grilled cheese sandwich bar. Potato bars and assemble your own
pizza are additional ideas.
Ribbons are festive. Tie lengths of different colored ribbons
and even different styles of ribbons on the backs of chairs.
Personalize each chair back for guests, by affixing nametags to
the chairbacks. Positioning placecards on the chairs instead of
the tabletop is different and fun.
The 1980s decade is “hot.” Look up music and news events of the
decade and ask guests to come in 1980s attire. Hosts might have
a “do you remember” quiz once everyone arrives.
The orange, apricot and citrus palette continues to charm. For
holiday parties in 2013, try “bubble gum pastels” or lighter
shades of aqua, yellow, pink, mint green and lavender.
Paper drinking straws are trendy. (I don’t understand the
popularity of these since they inevitably get soggy and stick

said. “If you are happy with
your theme and party plan,
then your answer should be,
‘Yes, indeed, I want to be
here.’”
Floral designer Jim Marvin displayed
a model of the fun Christmas tree
he is decorating for President and
Mrs. Obama for the White House.
The tree is accented with pastel and
neon colored glass balls. The model
was exhibited in Marvin's showroom
in the AmericasMart market center
in downtown Atlanta. Marvin said
the President and Mrs. Obama were
delighted with the design.
Henderson also cautions hosts
to keep table centerpieces
relatively short in height. No
more than 10 inches, she said,
so guests can easily talk across
a table.
Mixed up or mismatched glassware is fashionable. Message glassware, such
as the fun glassware designed by Lolita Healy, is popular, too. Mismatched
napkins are trendy, and a few manufacturers are offering multi-colored napkin
assortments in their lines.
After listening to the entertaining seminars and talks at the Atlanta
AmericasMart, I started going through my recipes and reminiscences of 1980s
cooking. I recalled the decade as a time of discovering Tex Mex, Cajun/Creole,
black beans, vegetable trays, Ranch Dressing, garlic/cheese grits, and soufflés.
A tasting of these 1980s dishes brought back a lot of memories. Try coming up
with your own menu. Here is my recipe for Cheese Grits.
Stir grits into a saucepan of rapidly boiling salted water.
Cook, stirring constantly, until grits start boiling. Cover and
reduce heat to low.
Continue cooking for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally to
prevent sticking. Turn off heat, but keep pot on the burner.
Into hot cooked grits, stir grated cheese and butter. When
cheese and butter are melted and mixed in. Add beaten
eggs and stir until thoroughly mixed in.
Pour grits/cheese mixture into a greased 8-inch square
baking dish. Bake at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. Let stand
for 10 minutes before serving.
