Kohimarama School Tuesday 28th April A MESSAGE FROM KIRI It has been an eventful start to the new term. Straight off the block we dove into Book Week which was full of exciting reading events and activities for the students to enjoy. Congratulations to Room 1, 16, 17 and 21 for winning the Decorate A Door competitions in their teams. All the doors were amazing and the students had a fantastic time putting them together. Book Week also saw the junior school and senior school coming together for some shared activities which was hugely successful. The students in Kiri thoroughly enjoyed having the older children work with them to create new bunting, to be hung in the school library and having their older buddies come and read to them in the afternoon. The Book Character Dress-up Parade was once again a real highlight and the students looked wonderful. It was positive to see the variety of book characters that came along this year. For the finale to the week we had Stu Duval visiting and working with the different teams on illustrating and writing, it was amazing to see what he so skilfully inspired the students to achieve in the sessions that he saw them. We ended the week with our ANZAC dedication assembly and it was a truly reflective time where we put all other thoughts aside and in the true essence of ANZAC day, remembered the soldiers who bravely fought in the war and the Battle of Gallipoli. Outside the Performing Arts room the student leaders and Miss Hill have set up a display of crosses with the names of the soldiers who came from Kohimarama and sadly lost their lives while fighting in the war. If you have not already seen it, take a minute and have a look. “And for all whose lives are torn With one voice implore No more talk of war For the sons of Gallipoli” Kohimarama School, 112 Kohimarama Road, Kohimarama, Auckland 1071 Phone 09 528-5306 Email [email protected] Website www.kohi.school.nz Fax 09 528-5397 Up and Coming Events This Week Thursday 30th April Friday 1st May Monday 4th May Wednesday 6th May Senior Talent Quest Immunisations Senior Assembly Class/Portrait Photos Camp Information Evening The Kohi Way - Reliable We practise being reliable because when people are unreliable, others can’t trust them to keep their promises. If airplanes, trains or buses are late, passengers can miss important appointments. If someone keeps forgetting to do what they said they would do, they let people down. When you are reliable, people can trust you to show up on time, be where you promised to be, to put tools away to get the job done. Caught Being Good – Greenies For our draw this week, 13 very lucky students received a free ticket for one adult and two children to see the live performance of James and the Giant Peach. Congratulations on being caught doing the right thing – well done! Auditions start tomorrow and will conclude next Monday, with our Finals being held on Tuesday 5th May. We wish all students the best as they take up the challenge to perform in front of others over the next few days. Thanks also to our teachers who have the difficult task of judging. ANZAC Remembrance We have been very fortunate in being able to participate in a Nationwide remembrance of soldiers and nurses who fought for us, and those that lost their lives in World War 1. The Student Leaders were instrumental in creating a display of 30 crosses, with the names of soldiers, a nurse and as always one cross representing the Unknown Soldier, who died in the conflict beside the Performing Arts Room. These crosses bear the names of some of the brave people who came from our area in Auckland, see the photo. Please feel free to come and view this if you have not already had the opportunity. On Saturday 25th April, ten of our Student Leaders, Mrs Manners and Mrs Amadio attended the St Heliers Commemorative Service at 10.00am. They marched in the parade representing our School and laid a wreath at the memorial. An important occasion that we appreciated being part of. The wreath was a glorious display of paper poppies made by the students in Kiri Team. At our School Assembly on Friday we began with a dedicated time of remembering the soldiers who fought for us in World War 1. Our Student Leaders introduced the assembly with information about the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of the Gallipoli Landing and subsequent casualties. This was followed by each team contributing in their own chosen way, acknowledging the bravery, sacrifice and commitment of our soldiers. One of our ex pupils, Katie Glasgow-Palmer played the Last Post superbly on her trumpet and Mrs Manners concluded with the ode, For the Fallen.
