Texas QSO Party
Introduction – Here is a report on the results of the 2015 Texas QSO Party including individual scores in
each category, Texas club aggregate scores, an analysis of the participation levels, and a summary of the
county activity. Also included is a brief description of the log checking process along with some
comments on frequently occurring logging errors for future reference. If you would like to request the
files resulting from the log checking of your log please contact NO5W at his QRZ email address.
In the following tables Score* is the score before applying any bonus whereas Final Score includes the
bonus. The following two types of bonus points are available in the TQP:
Mobile County Activation Bonus – Each county from which a mobile makes 5 or more contacts earns
the mobile a bonus of 1000 points.
Mobile Tracking Bonus - For any station, fixed or mobile, 500 bonus points are awarded for each group
of five different counties that the station has a QSO with a given mobile. An example is given in the next
section.
US-Canada (Non-Texas) Individual Player Scores
Non-Texas Single Op CW Only Category - The NTX-SO-CWO category continues to be a popular one with
forty-four entries making 3671 contacts in 2015. As an example of the Mobile Tracking Bonus described
above, N6MU, a perennial TQP high scorer in this category, worked the following mobile stations in the
indicated number of counties earning the indicated bonus points: AD5A(2)=0, K5GQ(12)=1000,
K5YAA(23)=2000, KS5A(15)=1500, N4CD(16)=1500, N5NA(35)=3500, NO5W(26)=2500, W0BH(31)=3000,
W3DYA(12)=1000, W5CT(28)=2500 for a total of 18500 bonus points.
KN4Y from the 3830 Soapbox: Ten mobiles in the TXQP on CW running counties at zero speed or 85 mph, no time for ice tea and
the ice melted. Also fixed station on CW added to the excitement. There was no napping during this QSO party. This brought
back memories of the great Texas Armadillo Run many years ago. I hope other State QSO parties take notice. Mobiles, mobiles
and more mobiles. [NO5W – the Texas Armadillo Run which took place in 1986 was developed and sponsored by the Texas DX
Society as part of the Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration. TDXS even managed to get a declaration for a new county (Armadillo
County) to be used by county-hunters during the event. To see how that was done and who the organizers were check out this
newsletter from 1986.]

Non-Texas Single Op Phone Only Category – The NTX-SO-PHO category also continues to be a popular
one with forty-three entries making 1334 contacts in 2015. It is interesting to note that the QSOs and
bonus points earned by the leading players in this category were well below the bonus points earned by
the leading players in the NTX-SO-CWO category. As we will see in the mobile results the number of
counties available on CW from mobile activity was significantly greater than on phone resulting in fewer
opportunities for bonus credit by the phone only operators.

Texas QSO Party
Non-Texas Single Op Mixed-Mode Category – The NTX-SO-MIX category requires mode agility on the
operator’s part but tends to maximize the available stations. This category had twenty-eight entries
making 3519 contacts (2651 CW and 838 phone).
K4XU from the 3830 Soapbox - Loved the mobiles! Made 134 QSOs with 8 mobiles. I would love to see a station description of
these guys in the write-up. Thanks for a great party. I wish the 7QP could do as well with its 259 counties as you all do with
254.[NO5W – a brief description of several mobiles is provided in the Mobile Setups section].

Non-Texas Single Op QRP Category – The NTX-SO-QRP category requires quite a bit of patience on the
part of the operators and good ears on the part of the receiving stations. In 2015 it attracted more
entries (12) than the number of QRP entries from inside Texas. This year the top scorers had good
success tracking the mobiles as can be seen from their bonus points. As one might expect the group

made more use of CW (825 Qs) than of phone (177 Qs). The top three had excellent results tracking the
mobiles.

DX Single Op Category – Although conditions were generally poor during the TQP weekend the party did
attract 17 DX participants who made a total of 707 (638 CW and 69 phone) contacts. The top scorer,
SP9LJD, managed to work 119 different counties, most of them from contacts with the mobiles on CW:
K5GQ(5)=500, K5YAA(17)=1500, KS5A(10)=1000, N4CD(7)=500, N5NA(16)=1500, NO5W(7)=500,
W0BH(21)=2000, W3DYA(13)=1000, W5CT(10)=1000.
SP9LJD from the 3830 Soapbox - Most of the mobiles working perfect CW and therefore even in poor propagation on 20m on
Sunday I worked quite a big number of them.

Texas Single Op CW Only Category – The TX-SO-CWO category continues to be a popular one with
thirty-seven entries making 7863 contacts in 2015. In this category N5RZ really focused on the mobiles
working the following mobile stations in multiple counties: AD5A(2)=0, K5GQ(16)=1500,
K5YAA(25)=2500, KS5A(18)=1500, N4CD(15)=1500, N5NA(32)=3000, NO5W(38)=3500, W0BH(29)=2500,
W3DYA(21)=2000, and W5CT(30)=3000 for a total of 21000 bonus points.
N5RZ from the 3830 soapbox - Had never done this one from a fixed station before - only from the mobile. Was glad to see all
the mobiles doing a lot of 40M - otherwise this would have been a loooong contest! … I had run many of these counties in the
past, so it was fun "riding along" with the mobiles!

Texas Single Op Phone Only Category – The TX-SO-PHO category also continues to be a popular one
with fifty-three entries making 6692 contacts in 2015. It is interesting to note that the bonus points
earned by the leading players in this category were well below the bonus points earned by the leading
players in the TX-SO-CWO category. As we will see in the mobile results the number of counties
available on CW from mobile activity was significantly greater than on phone resulting in fewer
opportunities for bonus credit by the phone only operators.

Texas Single Op Mixed-Mode Category – The TX-SO-MIX category requires mode agility on the
operator’s part but tends to maximize the available stations. This category had twenty entries making
6096 contacts (2569 CW and 3527 phone). With the exception of WA2VYA’s outstanding effort in
tracking the mobiles the bonus points in the TX-SO-MIX category were more in line with those of the TXSO-PHO group.
K5RT from the 3830 soapbox - This was my first entry in Texas QSO Party. The conflict with CQ WW DX RTTY definitely had an
impact on DX QSO totals. It was a lot of fun working the mobiles from many different counties. I may have to try going mobile
next year.

Texas Single Op QRP Category – The TX-SO-QRP category requires quite a bit of patience on the part of
the operators and good ears on the part of the receiving stations but it continues to attract a small
number of entries. This year perennial members of this group, WB5BKL and W5ESE, were joined by
N1CC who rode a balanced mixed mode strategy to capture first place. As one might expect the group
made more use of CW (570 Qs) than of phone (273 Qs). WB5BKL had good results chasing the mobiles
bringing in 8500 bonus points but it wasn’t good enough to overcome the larger number of QSOs logged
by front-runner N1CC.
N1CC from the 3830 soapbox - QRP was fun, I was only 30% down from my final score from last-years LP entry ... that was a big
surprise to me! Contest is getting busier, perhaps in a year-or-two with more tweaking TXQP will be one of the BIG QSO Parties!

Texas Mobile Single Op CW Only Category – The TXM-SO-CWO category attracts mobile operators that
do all of the operating, usually with the assistance of a driver. In this category entries receive additional
bonus credit of 1000 points for each county from which they make five or more QSOs. This is in addition
to any bonus they receive for working other mobiles in five or more counties as described for the fixed
stations. Typically, however, the mobiles are running stations and doing very little S&P and for this
reason the bonus for mobiles comes primarily from the county activation bonus. Each year the TQP is
fortunate to have stations from outside the state come over to do mobile operation. In the TXM-SOTQP-2015-Results.pdf

Texas QSO Party
CWO category Guff-KS5A came over again from Arizona to help activate some counties. Thanks Guff and
congratulations on reaching your goal of having activated every county in Texas over the years.
KS5A from the 3830 soapbox - … good but personal point for this QSO party, was that I finally finished transmitting from all 254
TX counties. It has taken several years going in and out of this huge state. Thanks to those in the logs.

Texas Mobile Single Op Phone Only Category – The TXM-SO-PHO category is the other single mode
category that attracts mobile operators that do all of the operating, again usually with the assistance of
a driver. Mobile phone operation is generally more difficult than CW which can be noted in the
difference between the number of QSOs for the top scorers in the TXM-SO-CWO and TXM-SO-PHO
categories.

Texas Mobile Single Op Mixed Mode Category – Since the inception of the TXM-SO-PHO category
several years ago the TXM-SO-MIX category has not attracted more than two entries, perhaps due to
the additional work and skills required to operate both modes and the fact that multipliers count only
once. This year the winner in this category, Jerry-K5YAA, came down from Claremont in the Tulsa,
Oklahoma area to help out with the county coverage. Check out some photos of Jerry’s unusual setup
on his QRZ page., and read about his mobile QSO machine in the mobile setup section. K5YAA is another
out of state operator who provides mobile support to the TQP each year – thanks Jerry.

Texas Mobile Multi-Op Category – The TXM-MO category is a fun mobile category since it allows two or
more operators to share the driving and operating making it a lot easier to safely maintain coverage

through every hour of the party and typically results in the activation of a large number of counties. This
year there were four entries in this category with results from the top three being very close. This
category is fortunate to have another out of state mobile entry. Bob-W0BH has been helping out for
many years coming down from the Wichita, Kansas area to activate counties in the Texas Panhandle
stirring up lots of excitement with his multi-county operations. For the past several years Bob has been
assisted by Ron-AD0DX from the Missouri side of Kansas City. Many thanks to both of these operators
for coming down to participate and contributing to the TQP excitement with such great operating from
the Panhandle.

Texas Multi-Op Category – The TX-MO category is a fun way to get a group together to share the
operating duties since it provides a flexible way of accommodating schedules that might not allow a full
time commitment to the party. This year we had fourteen entries in this category making 9052 QSOs
(1508 CW and 7544 phone), and involving 71 different operators. NR5M and W5RTA successfully used
their CW QSOs to add a significant bonus component to their scores.

Texas Club Aggregate Results
Each Texas operator submitting a TQP log can indicate which club their score should be contributed to
and for each club these scores are summed to create the club’s aggregate score. In 2015 there were 27
clubs represented by 101 of the approximately 150 Texas logs submitted. The winner of the club
competition receives a traveling trophy as well as a permanent plaque. For a number of years the
Central Texas DX & Contest Club had a lock on the trophy but in the last three or four years the Dallas
Fort Worth Contest Group has mounted a strong effort and is the winning club for 2015. Here are the
summary results showing number of participants and total score.

Some Statistics from the TQP – Here are some statistics from the 2015 TQP including information on the
level of participation, county activity, etc.
Logs Received – In 2015 we received 290 logs with 144 of them being from outside the state and
146 from Texas. Of the logs from outside of Texas there were 17 DX logs. Very few logs were
received from Canada this year whereas in the past there have been some very active stations from
VE, especially VE3. The total number of logs received was down from our peak of 325 of several
years ago. Each year a large number of stations participate in TQP but do not submit a log. A byproduct of the log processing is the Received Stations Report which lists the number of logs in which
each station appears and the number of QSOs represented. The following data pulled from this
report gives an indication of additional logs that could have been received.

In this table the first column is a number of QSOs in submitted logs where a station is listed as the
received station. The second column is the number of stations that did not submit a log but where
the number of reported QSOs with that station is greater than or equal to the number in the first
column. So, for example there were 2 stations that were reported in more than 500 QSOs in the
submitted logs but did not submit a log. There were 43 stations that were reported in more than 50
QSOs in the submitted logs but did not submit a log. So taking the 25 QSOs level as a threshold for
submitting a log the total logs received could have been 290 + 120 = 410.
Band Statistics – The 40m and 20m bands continue to be the most popular bands.

Mode Statistics – CW continues to be the most popular mode, perhaps due to the large number of
QSOs made by mobiles and the fact that CW is the easier mode from a mobile. The breakdown is
57% CW and 43% phone across all logs and 75% CW to 25% phone across the mobiles. There was
also a very small (<< 1%) number of digital QSOs.
Butt-In-Chair Stations – These are the stations that were active in every hour of the contest. There
were forty (40) of them including seven (7) mobile stations, twenty-three (23) in-state fixed stations,
and ten (10) out-of-state fixed stations. The participation of this group forms the core activity of the
QSO party and is very much appreciated, as it is not easy to carve out an entire weekend to devote
to a contest and there are many from which to choose. Here's a list of the BIC stations in each of
those categories.

The bottom chart indicates that 195 different counties were activated during the Saturday session
(hours 1-12) and another 53 new counties were added during the six hour Sunday session (hours 1318).
Mobile Coverage and Coordination - With 254 counties to activate and with more than a few of
those counties containing very few, if any, HF radio operators mobile operation plays an extremely
TQP-2015-Results.pdf
19
Texas QSO Party
important role in our attempt to activate all counties. In the 2015 TQP, of the 248 counties
activated, 190 of those were activated by mobiles only, no fixed station was active in those counties.
And of the 190 mobile-only counties approximately two-thirds (124) were activated by a single
mobile with only 66 of the mobile-only counties having two, or in a few cases three, mobiles pass
through. Of course this means that those 124 counties were probably on the air a maximum of 3045 minutes (and except in the larger counties only 15-20 minutes) during the entire 18 hours of the
party. So for the operator interested in maximizing multipliers it is important to stay in the chair and
keep track of the mobiles.
With a limited number of mobiles, it is important to have some coordination (another term for
pleading and arm-twisting) between them in order to adequately spread the mobiles out in an
attempt to limit duplication. This is done during the planning phase in the last few weeks running up
to the party. The web and Google maps like the one below are a big help here. Mobiles file their
county activation plans and these are added to the map daily in order to indicate where additional
coverage is needed.
Counties Missing in Action – As you can see from the Cumulative Counties Activated chart only 248
of the 254 counties were activated. No QSOs were logged from the following six counties: Crockett,
Culberson, Jefferson Davis, Presidio, Terrell, and Val Verde all of which are large counties in the Big
Bend area of the state as shown on the following map.

Mobile Setups – Here is a tabulation of information on several of the TQP mobiles along with a few
comments. Looking at the table you can see that Icom, Kenwood, and Elecraft are popular radios and
that the antennas in use run the gamut from screwdrivers to ham sticks, with Hustler also having a
presence.

The W5CT station was the only multi-two installation. The W5CT crew (W5MJ, KG5U, K5PI, WK5S) had
planned to use 200w TS-480-HX radios on all bands but the second 480-HX “conked out” (technical
Texas term for “failed”) so a second 100w version of the TS-480 was pressed into service for 20/15.
With the exception of K5YAA the radios and laptops are powered from the vehicle electrical system. In
the case of the K5YAA high-power mobile the K3 and the amplifier are powered from a bank of three
marine batteries charged continuously using a Honda ei2000 generator carried on an external trailer
which also contains the Tarheel antenna – see K5YAA’s QRZ page for several photos. Jerry reports that
he has recently replaced the trailer with a cargo carrier that slips into the trailer hitch on the van. The

cargo carrier contains the generator and the Tarheel and results in a more compact installation
providing easier parking, etc.
Traveling along with K5YAA in a QSO party is quite often an adventure – just ask N4PN, K4BAI, KU5B, or
N5WR as well as several others or read about it in the 3830 archives. A good example is the situation
surrounding the purchase of the 2006 Caravan. Here’s how Jerry describes it: “The vehicle is a Dodge
2006 Grand Caravan purchased in the middle of the 2007 Oklahoma QSO Party after the engine blew on
the 1996 Dodge Caravan that had been used for several years of running. The 2006 van now has over 30
QSO parties under its belt and a meager 158,000 miles on it. The 1996 blew its engine at 145,000 but
unlike the 2006 I rarely had it serviced. I have purposely had top notch oil put in the 2006 van every 7,000
miles or so in hopes of stretching it to 200,000.” The OK QP is a two-day affair so, picture this, sometime
late Saturday K5YAA managed to get his blown ’96 Caravan to a dealer, purchase a used 2006 Caravan,
remove radio gear and re-install radio gear on new vehicle, and be ready for the 1400z start Sunday
morning – not for the faint of heart but for K5YAA it’s all part of the game!
The Log Checking Process – Finally, here is a brief overview of the log checking process. If your score
published in those tables above isn’t exactly what you thought it should be, here is where you may have
lost some QSOs and in some cases a multiplier or two.
1. Each received log is reviewed for proper format and where necessary converted to a standard
Cabrillo format and imported into a SQL database (MySQL).
2. A PHP script is run against the database with the goal of matching up QSOs from each log with
corresponding QSOs from the other log. Matching is done on the basis of Band, Mode, Call, Sent
QTH, and Received QTH. The output of this script is a set of three files for each submitted entry
a. Verified log file - this is a file containing all of the QSOs for which a matching QSO was
found in the other submitted log and it is the file that will eventually be scored after the
review of the following two files is complete.
b. NIL file – this is a file containing those QSOs for which a matching QSO was not found in
the other submitted logs
c. Uniques file – this is a file containing all of the QSOs with stations that did not submit a
log and whose call does not appear in any other submitted logs
3. Using software-assisted manual review, each QSO in the NIL file for each entry is reviewed to
determine why no matching QSO was found. If it is determined that the failure to find a match
was due to a logging error by the other station the QSO is put back into the Verified log file.
Otherwise the QSO is held out.
4. Using software-assisted manual review each QSO in the Uniques file for each entry is reviewed
to determine if the call logged is a busted version of a call from a station that submitted a log. If
it is not determined to be a busted call then the QSO is put back into the Verified log file.
5. Upon completion of the above steps for all of the submitted logs an automated process is run to
score all of the Verified Log Files.
Note: You may request a copy of the above three files and the resulting analysis for your entry by
sending an email to [email protected] .

Some Common Logging Problems – Here are some common score-reducing problems to avoid
1. Failure to use the correct abbreviation when logging a Texas county or a US state. Examples
here would be logging JACK when working someone in Jackson (JKSN) County, logging COMA
when working someone in Comal (COML), logging MONT when working someone in
Montgomery (MGMY). There is a JACK County whose abbreviation is JACK, COMA is the
abbreviation for Comanche County, and MONT is the abbreviation for Montague County.
2. Sending the wrong abbreviation for a county you are in. Prime examples are sending MONT
when you are in Montgomery (MGMY), and sending COMA when you are in Comal(COML).
3. Failure to check that your logging program has correctly recorded your sent information. A
prime example here is Texas users of N1MM failing to note that the program logged the sent
QTH as TX or TEXAS rather than the county that you actually sent. This usually does not result in
loss of points since logs having this problem are returned to sender for correction. But it creates
additional work for the log checkers – not a good thing.
4. Failure to log the correct QTH when working a DX station. Texas stations receive multiplier credit
for each DX entity worked so contacts with DX stations should be logged with the primary prefix
of the DX entity. For example DX is not a valid QTH when working DL3DXX but DL is, similarly if
you work SP9LJD the correct QTH to log is SP.
5. Failure to log the correct band or mode on which the QSO took place. This one requires some
judgment on the part of the log checker since it is sometimes not conclusive as to which of the
stations made the error. If that is the only error in that case the QSO is allowed back into the
valid QSOs file for both stations. However, if a station consistently has a mismatch in band or
mode whereas the other station does not then the QSO is not allowed back into the valid QSOs
file. This problem is easily avoided by interfacing your radio and logging program.
Conclusion – By my count the QSO party engaged 208 Texas operators and 144 operators from outside
the state and is reason enough to declare it a success. So that’s the 2015 Texas QSO Party story and
we’re sticking to it. However, if you find any errors, like having you in the wrong club or category drop us
an email at our QRZ address and we will make the necessary corrections. Thanks to all who took the
time to participate in the 2015 Texas QSO Party.
