Up & Down the Coast Pro surfer, Jake Paterson, shares the best places to Catch a wave down south The Yallingup region has some of the best surf in the world and is one of the most consistent places for quality waves. In a short zone of about 10km you can find all kinds of different types of waves. Yallingup Mainbreak is where I normally start my surfing adventure. At 10 foot plus, it is very similar to the surf break in Hawaii called Sunset. Just down around the bay in Yallingup is a break named Shallow’s that is great on a small swell. The first bay to the south of Yallingup is a place called Smiths Beach that has two very hollow right hand reef breaks and always has some fun beach breaks when the swell is mid to small. Heading north from Yallingup, towards the end of the Cape, there is a break called Three Bears. You need a 4x4 to get there but, in my eyes, is one of the most consistent waves in the world. My advice for a travelling surfer in this area is to always get up early to beat the on-shore breeze (The Fremantle Doctor), have a 4x4 car full of fuel (as you always seem to chase your tail looking for the best waves), and of course stop into my surf shop in Dunsborough for all your surfing needs! Get out on the water One of the best ways to experience the region’s coastline is on the water and there are lots of options to get you out there. > Paddle the pristine coves and bays, or tranquil inland river systems, with Cape Kayaks or Bushtucker Tours. > Watch the sun melt into the water on a sunset cruise with Ocean Eco Adventures. > Live it up by hiring a catamaran for the day. > Relax and let someone else do the driving on a day sail charter. > For a unique getaway, spend some time on a houseboat. >Search for dolphins and seals on an eco-cruise. Cast a line Local fishermen are always reluctant to give out their favourite spots, but here are a few to get you started: > The Busselton Jetty is a great place to catch fish, squid or crabs. > The region’s beaches will often reward fishermen with herring and whiting. > The Dunsborough Rocks provide a lot of different fishing opportunities, including the famous salmon run between March and May each year. > The big ones are out there! Head into the deep waters for dhufish and snapper with Legend Charters and Naturaliste Charters. Beaches for dogs There are dog-friendly beaches throughout the region where your pets can run free providing you keep an eye on them. Please see maps for locations closest to you and adhere to on-site signage. Beaches for 4WDs You can take your vehicle on to the beach at: > Wonnerup Beach > Boranup Beach Please see maps for locations closest to you and adhere to on-site signage. Lookout! There are some great coastal lookouts in the region, including: > Canal Rocks, where granite rocks jut out into the ocean creating a natural canal hollowed out by the force of the sea. > Sugarloaf Rock, off Cape Naturaliste, is one of the most photographed seascapes in Western Australia and a great place to spot dolphins. STAY SAFE Ensure you enjoy your time at the beach. ! Not all beaches in the region are patrolled. Be aware of local conditions, adhere to signage and wear sun protection. Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse This working lighthouse marks the start of the Cape to Cape Track and provides breathtaking panoramic views across the Indian Ocean and the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. You can discover more of Cape Naturaliste’s rugged natural beauty on a Guided Nature Trail Tour. Spot whales and their young frolicking in the waters below during the annual migratory period (September to December), see an ever-changing display of vegetation and wildflowers, and learn about the geology of cliffs and rock formations as you make your way along the Cape. Never approach or feed animals in the wild. >Shorter walks include Meelup Trail (Meelup Regional Park) and tracks around Ngilgi Cave, Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and Ambergate Reserve. Ngilgi Cave The opening of Ngilgi Cave as the region’s first tourist attraction marked the beginning of formalised tourism in the south west. Discovered by Edward Dawson in 1899, the tours he conducted became so popular that Caves House was built to meet the demand for accommodation and the township of Yallingup was born. Formerly known as Yallingup Cave, it was renamed to reflect the rich Aboriginal legend, associated with the cave. Today, the cave is still one of the most popular attractions in the region. Boardwalks lead you through the impressive chambers of this underground wonderland where you can learn more about the remarkable stalactites, helictities, shawls and columns on a Semi-guided Show Cave Tour. Margaret River Wine Region I am often asked which is my favourite wine region in Australia, and the answer is this - other than the Yarra Valley, where I have lived (and worked as winemaker and wine writer) since 1985, it is Margaret River. Margaret River is quintessentially Australian, guarded by massive flowering gums, bejewelled by wild flowers, and punctuated by ancient xanthoreas. Seldom is the blue of the Indian Ocean far from sight, providing the air-conditioning system that gives the region its remarkable climate. The gently rolling hills are deceptive. They can conceal vineyards, creeks, patches of thick forest and wineries alike. In the database of my 2012 Wine Companion, there are 159 wine producers - the majority small, but with names known far and wide in Australia and overseas. It is not possible to say with any conviction which wine style is Margaret River’s best. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon (the latter two groups either as blends or single varieties) all stake a claim. Not only is the quality of these wines exemplary, but all have a distinctive stamp of Margaret River to their flavour, texture and structure. The chardonnays achieve exceptional complexity built on layers of fruit; Cabernets and Cabernet Merlots are at once autocratic yet fragrant; and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends brush aside the challenge of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. 12 www.geographebay.com Explore... Food, Wine & Beer The region’s ‘experience mix’ makes it like no other, according to renowned West Australia chef, Russell Blaikie. I was born and bred here, and cannot think of another place on earth that has the ‘experience mix’ of this region… The talc-white sand of Busselton gives way to the turquoise blue, calm waters of Geographe Bay . The secluded bays and coves along the drive to the tip of Cape Naturaliste, sparkle as much on a winter’s day as they do in the summer. The coast then morphs into the rugged scenery of the west side of the Cape, punctuated by surfers paddling into some of the best waves on the planet. There is so much to discover, from a slide down the sand dunes at Injidup, to casting a fishing line off the Busselton Jetty, or experiencing a walk through the Boranup Forest, gazing up at the majestic Karri trees. Then there’s the wine….there is no argument this region produces a vast number of the greatest wines in Australia, and some of the great wines of the world! And what better than a glass or two to wash down some of Australia’s finest produce from the land and sea, served in restaurants, wineries, bars and cafes that dot the region, run by passionate people who make a point of ensuring YOU are the most important person they are serving today… I love telling people I was brought up in this region as it always incites envy.. .and rightfully so. >In addition to beer, Bootleg Brewery offers a fascinating brewing museum, viewing window and live entertainment at weekends. Art, Culture & Heritage Immerse yourself in the region’s vibrant blend of art, culture and history. Fascinating stories unravel before you as you watch artists at work, meet local personalities and discover times gone by. A brief history of the region The early history of European exploration of the Busselton area focuses on the French expedition of 1801 which brought Nicholas Baudin, with his ships, the Geographe and Naturaliste, to the coast of Western Australia. Baudin named Geographe Bay and Cape Naturaliste after his vessels, and named the river Vasse after a sailor, Thomas Vasse, who was lost overboard. Busselton was one of the earliest settlements in Western Australia. It was first settled by the Bussell family, who relocated from the Blackwood River after John Bussell discovered superior farm land in the area. The Bussells moved to the area in 1834, establishing a cattle station which they named ‘Cattle Chosen’. Cattle Chosen quickly became one of the most prosperous stations in the colony, and as a result nearly all of the settlers at Augusta relocated to the area within a few years. The present name of Busselton is derived from the Bussell family. Being in close proximity to tall timber country, Busselton soon established itself as a leading port. In 1850, timber was being exported and the small town prospered. Jetties for this purpose were built at Wonnerup, Busselton and Quindalup. Of these, only the Busselton Jetty remains. Evidence of this rich history can be seen as you make your way around the Busselton townsite. St Mary’s Church Built by the early settlers in the 1840s, this beautiful historic building on Queen Street is the oldest stone church in the state and is still a place of worship for the Busselton community. Wander around the graveyard and read the inscriptions, on many of the settlers’ tombstones, which are still in their original state. Ballaarat Train On display in Victoria Square, the Ballaarat Engine was WA’s first steam locomotive and is the oldest surviving example of a steam locomotive built in Australia. Built in 1871 in Victoria, the Ballaarat was bought to WA to haul timber between Wonnerup and Yoganup until 1886, primarily for the construction of the Busselton Jetty. Busselton Museum Housed in the town’s Old Butter Factory on Peel Terrace, the Busselton Museum is the largest museum outside of Perth. You can tour the old group settlement home and school, examine antiques, photographs and furniture, listen to old records on a gramophone and marvel at the beautiful garments worn over 100 years ago. Explore... Art, Culture & Heritage Wonnerup House Art abounds Just outside of Busselton town is the beautifully restored Wonnerup House where you can take the rare opportunity to step back into the life of a pioneer farming family. Established by the Layman family in the 1830s, you can wander through the furnished homestead, stables, blacksmiths, school and teacher’s house which are set amongst stunning gardens. Home to the greatest number of artisans in Western Australia, the region is fast growing a reputation for its acclaimed artists. Busselton Jetty Aboriginal Culture Extending almost two kilometres out over Geographe Bay, the heritage listed Busselton Jetty is the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. Discover the jetty’s fascinating past at the Cultural Heritage Museum before taking a ride on the jetty train to the stunning Underwater Observatory. Wardan Aboriginal Cultural Centre >Surf and landscape photography inspired by the region is on display at M8 Photography. Pioneer Cemetery The cemetery, which is situated on the corner of Marine Terrace and Stanley Street, has over 1000 graves of many of the district’s early settlers. Old Couthourse Built in 1854, the Old Courthouse complex was Busselton’s first centre for dispensing the law. The original building consisted of a courtroom, gaol cells, post office, sergeant’s quarters and bond store. Today, the building is used for art classes, workshops and the ArtGeo Gallery, with the gaol cells as a grim reminder of its past. A secret place on the edge of the world lured Tim Duffy to create his latest film ‘Drift’. The region is great because it has an elusive charm. In one way it is a relatively small area where 30 minutes driving will put you in all types of places, yet it still feels like it is big, wide and open. It looks beautiful and inviting, yet it can also be untamed and raw. You can always find or start a party at night, or in the afternoon with good company, but the days are also amazing and can be jam- packed with adventure in a group, or completely alone. It’s still kind of a quiet, secret place on the edge of the world, yet almost everybody has heard of it, visited, or even lived here, at one time. All four seasons have great charm and could be seen as the best season, depending on how you look at it. I like the warm sunny days in winter, the cool days in summer, but early spring and late autumn are my favourites. www.geographebay.com 15 Must do... Top 5s 3Burn off some energy We live here.
