INTRODUCTION
HKCC always strives to help our students enjoy their college life to the fullest
as well as maximise their potential and strengths.
This booklet, which consists of the following three sections, showcases
our students’ academic and co-curricular endeavours and contributions
throughout the year.
1. Achievements
HKCC encourages students to participate in different competitions and
activities in order to unlock their potential, build up self-confidence, gain
experiences and broaden their horizons.
In the 2014/15 academic year, our students made tremendous achievements
in open competitions such as Academic - ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition
2014; Cultural Performance – MTR Safety and Courtesy Board Game Design
Competition; Arts – 2015 Sony World Photography Awards – Student Focus
Competition; and Sports – 2014/15 Inter-University Taekwondo Competition.
We appreciate our students’ dedication, perseverance and endeavour and are
proud of their accomplishments.

2. Services
HKCC makes an effort to serve the community and promote volunteerism. Our
students are encouraged to serve not only people in Hong Kong, but also those
in Chinese mainland and overseas countries where volunteers are needed.

In 2014/15, students actively engaged in numerous service projects in Hong
Kong, Chinese mainland and other parts of the world. Students took part in
different kinds of voluntary work organised by non-governmental organisations
such as Senior Citizen Home Safety Association, Mental Health Association
of Hong Kong, HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre, etc. Through serving the
community, students can develop a positive attitude, reflect on their own
values, raise their social awareness and improve their communication skills.
3. Awards, Scholarships and Honours Lists
HKCC regards the provision of scholarships as part and parcel of the College’s
educational approach and mission – the provision of a holistic and quality
education so that students’ prospects are enhanced.
HKCC offers different kinds of scholarships to support students’ learning and
all-round development, recognise their efforts and outstanding performance
in academic and co-curricular activities, and acknowledge their contributions
to voluntary work. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all donors
who have supported our students in the past.
This booklet witnesses the growth and development of our students. We hope
that you will enjoy reading the many different Achievements, Services and

FOREWORD
DIRECTOR’S FOREWORD
Following the fine tradition of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong
Kong Community College has been endeavouring to foster the wholeperson development of our students, with the aim of making their college
life more fulfilling as well as making a difference to their further studies
and career development.
Our all-out efforts in this important regard are made on a variety of
fronts. For example, we encourage our students to participate in local
and overseas competitions so that they can identify their strengths, learn
from other players and further increase their self-confidence. Besides,
we support our students to provide voluntary work and community
services for the needy locally and internationally. Financially, we aspire
to offer different forms of scholarships and support funds to our students
in recognition of their outstanding performance in academic pursuits
and non-academic achievements.
All these efforts have borne fruit. Since our inception, we have been
witnessing the holistic development of our students in various ways
with regard to their achievements, services to the community and
scholarships obtained. To share their joy and pride, I would like to
invite you to take a few minutes to read this booklet. Section 1 covers
the achievements of our students in a wide range of arenas such as
academic, cultural performance and sports, to name just a few. Section
2 details the many different kinds of services provided by our students
in Hong Kong, Chinese mainland and other parts of the world. Section
3 lists the scholarships obtained by our students from various donors to
recognise their achievements in different areas, support their studies,
and sponsor their participation in voluntary work.
Our mission to enhance the whole-person development of our students
depends very much upon the inputs of various stakeholders, including
but not limited to our industry partners, donors, students and teachers.
While thanking you for your unfailing support in the past, we would be
most grateful if you could continue supporting us in the future.

2. Gaining Silver and Merit Awards in Advertising
Yiu Tan-ying, a 2015 graduate of Associate in Design (Advertising Design),
won a merit award in the 2014 HK4As Student Awards with her joint-entry
“Green Spot – Endless Charm”. Law Yuen-kwan and Look Chun-pong, HKCC
design graduates who are now studying at PolyU, also won a silver award
and a merit award respectively in the competition.
The award presentation ceremony was held on 28 November 2014.
Participants were required to create advertisements on the theme of
“Advertising Time Travel” in poster, video, story board or other formats.
Since 1990, The Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of Hong
Kong has been organising this annual competition with the support from
local and overseas universities, aiming at encouraging and developing
young talents in the advertising industry.
1. Designing Board Game to
Promote Courtesy on MTR
Two 2014 graduates of Associate in Design, Lee Tsz-ching and Hui Wai-sim,
designed a board game “Courtesy Along the Journey” which won the MTR
Safety and Courtesy Board Game Design Competition co-organised by the
MTR, the social enterprise People on Board, and HKCC. The board game
aims to educate passengers in an interesting and natural way about safe
and courteous behaviours on the MTR.
3. Design Student Named among 10 Finalists
in World Photo Contest
Ngai Man-yan, a 2015 graduate of Associate in Design (Advertising Design),
competed with entries from 230 education institutions worldwide and
became one of the ten finalists in the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards
– Student Focus Competition. Her entry “The Infinite Sky”, exhibited at
Somerset House in London and viewed by thousands of visitors from 24
April to 10 May 2015, presents her point of view as a designer that Hong
Kong may need more skyscrapers and the infinite sky would be the city’s
future.
The first 1,000 sets of the winning board game were launched and
distributed free to primary schools and community centres at the end of
2014. The game is designed on the model of MTR routes and it allows
two to six players to join at the same time. During the game, players will
encounter various good or bad behaviours, which will affect their progress.
The inspiration came from daily observation and personal experience on
MTR trips, according to Wai-sim, one of the winning students. The other
winner Tsz-ching got a chance to introduce and demonstrate the board
game at Hong Kong Book Fair in 2014.

“The series of photos captures the different processes of construction,
such as demolition and bamboo scaffolding, and I tried to enhance their
visual impact by multiplying the images with a kaleidoscope,” said Manyan. When asked how she felt about being invited to attend the exhibition
and award presentation ceremony in London, Man-yan said, “It was really
my honour to present my work in one of the major art and design exhibition
centres in the world. During the exhibition, I made friends with the other
nine finalists from other countries such as South Africa and Brazil, and we
shared our views on inspiration and aesthetics with each other.”

4. Four Design Graduates Win Seven Prizes
in Two Competitions
Four 2015 graduates of Associate Degree in Design (Advertising Design),
namely Yiu Tan-ying, Ngai Man-yan, Lau Ching-yu and Chan Yui-fung, formed
a group named “Project X” together with their lecturer Mr Justin Lau and
won seven prizes in two open video competitions with their creativity.
Project X produced a mini-movie My Victoria Harbourfront: A Seven Million
People’s Story to participate in “My Victoria Harbourfront Mini-movie
Competition” organised by the Harbourfront Commission. They won a merit
award and “The Most Popular Mini-movie on Facebook” in the open group
in February 2015. Yui-fung said, “Hong Kong is such a fast-paced society
that people work their tails off every day. We should go to the harbour, enjoy
the view, and slow down a bit to clear our mind!”
Project X also entered the 6th Healthy Internet Video Contest “Healthy Idea
Healthy Mind” with another mini-movie Online Winners which reminds
teenagers to avoid browsing violent and gambling information on the
Internet. The competition was organised by the Office for Film, Newspaper
and Article Administration and The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups
Jockey Club Media 21. The results were released in April 2015 and Project
X won five prizes, including the “Best Screenplay – Champion” and the
“Best Visual Effect – Champion (Open Group)”. Mr Lee Lik-chi, a famous
director, even shared the video on his online social platform.

6. Serving as HK Young Ambassadors

Tan-ying, Man-yan and Ching-yu are now studying Advertising Design
at PolyU, while Yui-fung is pursuing BA (Hons) in Retail and Service
Management at PolyU SPEED.

HKCC graduates Kwan Wing-cheong, Kam Ka-yuet as well as student Ip
Wing-man were each awarded a medal for their outstanding performance
in 2014/15 Hong Kong Young Ambassadors Scheme organised by the
Tourism Commission and The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups.
The scheme aims at enhancing young people’s sense of belonging and
understanding of the diverse culture of Hong Kong as well as fostering their
sense of courtesy to visitors.

Wing-man, who received a bronze medal for serving 60 hours, enjoyed
participating in this scheme as it allowed her to gain valuable experience by
helping tourists from all over the world. She was also responsible for crowd
control during Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival. Wing-man said, “I would
certainly recommend this scheme to other students.”
5. Design Graduate Receives PolyU
Outstanding Student Award
Law Yuen-kwan, an HKCC alumnus in Design, received the prestigious PolyU
Outstanding Student Award 2014. Articulating to PolyU School of Design
after graduation from HKCC, Yuen-kwan was selected as one of the eight
outstanding students by the University. The award presentation ceremony,
officiated by PolyU President Professor Timothy W. Tong, was held at Chiang
Chen Studio Theatre on 12 February 2015.

in Internet of Things Competition

Two HKCC teams from Associate in Business (Marketing), namely “Q-Waste”
and “Open Toilet”, won two bronze awards in the Hong Kong U-21 Internet of
Things (HKIoT) Awards 2014 under the category of IoT Revolution Concept.
Five other teams from HKCC were also awarded a certificate of merit. They
received their prizes at GS1 Hong Kong’s 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner held
on 17 December 2014 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Organised by GS1 Hong Kong, the competition aimed at encouraging more
original IoT application development by talented local students.

8. Earning First-runner Up and Merit Award
in Social Entrepreneur Competition

Performance Award from MTR
Two HKCC teams from Associate in Business, namely “Social Fighter” and
“The One”, were awarded the first runner-up and a merit prize respectively
in the first “Social Entrepreneur for Tomorrow” Competition organised
by 2econd Generation Entrepreneur Association on PolyU West Kowloon
Campus on 18 October 2014.
The 6th MTR CSA Alumni Gathering was held on 11 October 2014. Over 60
former Customer Service Ambassadors (CSA) from five tertiary education
institutions gathered at the MTR Fo Tan Railway House to share their
internship stories.
Tsang Man-ying, a graduate of HKCC’s Associate in Business (Marketing),
was presented with an Excellent Performance Award for her outstanding
performance during her internship at the Airport Station. HKCC alumni
Cheung Lok-yee and Au Yiu-chun, who are now working for the MTR as
Assistant Customer Care Officer and Station Officer respectively, were also
present to share their work experience.
The two teams attended the Social Enterprise Summit’s International
Symposium on 3 November 2014 to learn more about social enterprises
and to develop their social innovation skills. The award presentation
ceremony was held as the finale of the symposium. The competition aimed
at helping youths who want to make a difference in society to familiarise
themselves with the operations of social enterprises.

The final of the ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition 2014 (Sub-degree
Category) was held on 29 November 2014. Two HKCC teams from the
Division of Business were selected as “The top SEVEN” out of 481
competing teams. The two teams each won a merit award after presenting
their outstanding proposals to the judges. Three other HKCC teams were
each awarded a Judges Commendation.
Tsz-shan, the leader of “The One”, said, “Successful entrepreneurs shared
with us their experience in starting up a new business and useful techniques
for writing business proposals. We now have a better understanding of the
key elements of a new business and the operation of a company.” She also
shared the importance of team spirit, “We worked overnight in the training
camp to keep improving our proposal for the best quality. I believe that was
the major reason why we won. We really worked well as a team!”
With the theme of “Empowering Families Living in Poverty”, the competition
helped participants learn how to develop sensible business proposals and
how input from accounting and business professionals contribute towards
the success of a business project.

11. Winning Shadow Entrepreneur Competition
“The One”, a team formed by Ho Tsz-shan and Cheng Hok-hei, year-two
students of Associate in Business (Accounting) together with a PolyU
student, participated in the 8th Shadow Entrepreneur Programme “Dare to
Innovate, Dreams Come True” and was selected as one of the six finalists
to join a three-day training camp. With its comprehensive business plan as
well as unique business model and market positioning, “The One” became
the champion.

Lam Cheuk-hin, a 2015 graduate from Associate in Business (Hospitality
Management), said he has learned more about how to meet customers’
needs during his internship. Chiu Man-tung, another 2015 graduate from
Associate in Business (Marketing), said she has learned emotion and crisis
management skills.

Organised by JCI City Junior Chamber, the competition aimed at providing
an opportunity for tertiary students to meet successful entrepreneurs and
learn how to start up their own business in the future. Over 40 teams
participated in the event to develop an innovative business or product.

12. Outstanding Performance in Sports
The PolyU Taekwondo Team, including 5 HKCC student members, did very
well in the 2014/15 Inter-University Taekwondo Competition held on 7
March 2015. Apart from contributing to the team championship in the last
seven consecutive years, the HKCC athletes also won themselves medals
in the Final gloriously: Lee Cheuk-keung won the first runner-up in Boy’s
Middleweight while Tsoi Lai-yan and So Yuen-ting won the second runner-up
in Girl’s Bantamweight and Featherweight respectively.

OBJECTIVES

The scholarship aims at recognising freshmen’s outstanding
performance in all-round development during their secondary
school studies. New students who have attained outstanding
academic achievements and contributed actively to the community
or their secondary schools will receive the scholarship for studying

SERVICES
1. Volunteer In Primary School Project (VIP Project)
Sixty-seven HKCC volunteers joined the VIP Project from September 2014
to June 2015. Organised by Hong Kong and Macao Lions Beacon for Youth
Foundation, the project aimed to serve and care about the deprived primary
school children in Tin Shui Wai, Shatin and Tseung Kwan O. The participants
acted as tutors to assist children with their homework and study.
2. “Stand by You” Leadership Training
Scheme 2014-15
The Scheme was one of the major initiatives of the Hong Kong Police Force
to raise teenagers’ awareness of fighting crimes and drug abuse. It was
held from October 2014 to June 2015. After receiving a series of training,
participants served as mentors and guided primary or secondary school
students to participate in various activities, including orienteering, war
games and adventure based programmes. Sixteen HKCC students joined
this meaningful scheme and gained valuable experience.

7. Lovely Classroom Supporting Scheme for Ethnic
Minority Children and Parents
Six HKCC volunteers joined the “Lovely Classroom” programme which
provided Chinese tutorial classes for ethnic minority children. Organised
by the HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre (Services for Ethnic Minorities), the
programme lasted from November 2014 to February 2015. Through the
programme, the participants could understand more about ethnic minority
children and the problems they encountered.
8. Dr. Youth - Mentoring Scheme for New Arrivals
from the Mainland
Eleven HKCC students joined the programme organised by the HKSKH Lady
MacLehose Centre (Group & Community Work Unit) from November 2014
to March 2015. The participants acted as mentors to assist new arrivals in
getting used to Hong Kong education system and lifestyle through regular
connections.
3. Elderly Health Care Project
9. Elderly Ring Hotline Service Project
Thirty-three HKCC students provided voluntary service to the elderly in Kwai
Chung from October 2014 to January 2015. Organised by Hong Kong Family
Welfare Society, the project aimed at facilitating physical and psychological
well-being of the elderly through developing awareness of health prevention
and regular habit of doing exercise. The participants provided support
including home visits, concern calls as well as group activities.
Four and nine HKCC volunteers joined the project organised by Senior
Citizen Home Safety Association from January to March 2015 and from
June to August 2015 respectively. The participants needed to address
various needs of the elderly via phone service.
10. Cultural Exchange Fun Day
4. Multicultural Experience Day
The event was organised by the HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre (Services
for Ethnic Minorities) on 18 October 2014. Thirty-five HKCC volunteers
joined the event to facilitate the cultural integration between ethnic minority
children and local children through mass games and food sharing.
5. “Sun Teens Alliance” Mentorship Programme
Eleven HKCC students participated in the programme organised by St.
James’ Settlement from October 2014 to July 2015. After receiving a series
of training, the participants served as mentors and guided teenagers to
participate in various activities, including caring activities in schools.
6. Mental Health Association of Hong Kong Open Day
The event was held on 25 October 2014 by the Mental Health Association
of Hong Kong. Fourteen HKCC volunteers provided support for the booths
in the open day with ex-mentally ill persons.

The event was organised by the Shatin (South) Integrated Family Service
Centre on 26 February 2015. Twelve HKCC volunteers joined the event to
facilitate the cultural integration between ethnic minorities and the locals
through various activities, including mass games, competitions, group
sharing and lunch gathering.
11. People’s Talents Bank of Community Mutual Care
The event was organised by the HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre from
February to April 2015. Ten HKCC students provided voluntary service to
the disadvantaged group in Kwai Chung.
12. Parent Classroom – Supporting Ethnic Minority
Families Programme
Four HKCC students joined the programme from February to May 2015.
Organised by the HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre, the programme aimed
to serve and care about the ethnic minority families in Kwai Ching. The
participants acted as tutors to teach ethnic minority families Cantonese
and assist parents with their children’s homework and school issues.

Two HKCC students participated in the programme organised by the HKSKH
Lady MacLehose Centre from February to April 2015. They visited homes
of ethnic minorities to learn their culture and lifestyle and address their
needs.
14. Cultural Exchange Day and Outdoor Activities for
Ethnic Minorities

Twenty-five HKCC students joined the event organised by the HKSKH Lady
MacLehose Centre from March to May 2015. The event aimed to enhance
the cultural exchange between Hong Kong youngsters and ethnic minority
children through food exchange and a visit to a theme park.

Organised by the Mental Health Association, the micro movie premiere
ceremony was held on 8 March 2015. Twenty-four HKCC volunteers
provided support for the ceremony together with ex-mentally ill persons.
16. EM Kid Home College
Nine HKCC volunteers joined the programme which provided co-curricular
activities for ethnic minority children. Organised by the HKSKH Lady
MacLehose Centre (Services for Ethnic Minorities), the programme lasted
from July to September 2015. Through the programme, the participants
could understand more about ethnic minority children.
Twenty-five HKCC students participated in the “Voluntary Teaching and
Community Service in HeYuan” from 6 to 9 January 2015 and twenty-one
HKCC students participated in the reunion trip from 31 May to 6 June 2015.
Jointly organised by Hong Kong Red Cross and HKCC, the service trips
aimed at serving the deprived primary students and local community. The
two events also gave more opportunities to HKCC volunteers for advancing
their leadership skills, creativity and personal development along with their
devotion towards the needy. During the trips, the volunteers organised a minicarnival for local children and delivered souvenirs to primary school students.

Twenty-seven HKCC students joined the “Project Rural Life” from 2 to 7
January 2015 in Taiwan to gain charitable and village life experience.
Organised by HKCC, this trip aimed at providing opportunities for students
to develop a sense of volunteerism and serve indigenous Taiwanese,
including homework tutorial service and hall reconstruction. The students
could boost their self-confidence and improve their communication skills;
they could also reflect on their own values and develop a positive attitude.

21. Tai Chung Service and Experience Trip
Nineteen HKCC students joined the Tai Chung Service and Experience Trip
organised by HKCC from 13 to 18 July 2015. This trip aimed at enhancing
students’ planning abilities and communication skills via organising
activities for children in Taiwan and providing voluntary services to the
youth and aborigines in Taiwan. The volunteers gained valuable experience
through this experience trip.

17. Autism Supporting Group
The event was organised by the Jockey Club Tsing Yi Children & Youth
Integrated Services Centre of the Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong
Kong from March to April 2015. One HKCC student joined the event to
support the group in helping autism spectrum disorder persons enhance
their communication skills and emotional control via a drama workshop.
18. Multiple Intelligence Scheme
Ten HKCC students joined the programme organised by the Jockey Club
Tsing Yi Children & Youth Integrated Services Centre of the Boys’ & Girls’
Clubs Association of Hong Kong from July to August 2015. The participants
assisted in organising various outdoor activities for primary school students.

• Thirty students joined the flag selling and fun day organised by the HKSKH
Lady MacLehose Centre (Services for Ethnic Minorities) on 27 December 2014.
• Eleven students joined the flag selling day organised by the Hong Kong
Blind Union on 17 January 2015.
