IN MEMORY 0F Sergeant Wireless Operator/Air Gunner EDWARD EGAN 1433364, No.9. Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died on 16th December 1943. Remembered with Honour Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery Edward Egan was born around 1923 and was the son of Daniel Egan and Kathleen Egan who originated from Cork in Ireland. Edward attended to Roman Catholic School in Chideock along with his older brothers Jack Egan and Gerry Egan. After the death of their mother and their father’s return to Ireland the young boys lived with Mrs Anderson at No.1, Broadmead in Chideock. Edward joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve and was based with No.9 Squadron stationed at Bardney in Lincolnshire. Bardney was operation from April 1943 until July 1945. Edward would have flown in a Lancaster Bomber and he is mentioned in Service Personnel of No.9. Squadron – Lost Bombers. It appears his plane was either ‘shot down’ or crashed over Eberswalde-Finow 43km NE of Berlin. On Bardney village green there is a memorial to RAF Bardney and IX Sqn. It is made from the three-bladed propeller and spinner from a Lancaster and a piece of Norwegian stone, mounted in a low wall. Edward (known as Teddy) was a very popular and charming young man in Chideock and it is said that ‘many hearts were broken’ after the village learnt of his death. Edward Egan died on 16th December, 1942. He is buried in the Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery and is commemorated on the Chideock War Memorial.
