Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We are closed on Fridays from June 8 - July 31. Beyond the Bell Guidelines GENERAL INFORMATION . . . Bastrop Independent School District conducts Beyond the Bell Classes for the benefit and enjoyment of community patrons. Classes are offered at a non-credit level. Financial support to operate the Beyond the Bell program comes strictly from the registration fees and when possible, community grants from the Bastrop area. Classes will begin as scheduled. Once a class has begun and is in progress, expenses for the teacher and materials have been set, therefore please read the refund policy carefully. REFUND POLICY . . . The Beyond the Bell program is funded through grants and registration fees, therefore the following refund procedures must be followed: • For classes cancelled for lack of enrollment, 100% of the registration fee will be refunded. • Withdrawal 7 or more days prior to the class start date will result in a 75% refund. After that date, no refunds will be issued. CANCELLED CLASSES . . . Classes that are cancelled due to conflict with regular school activities will be rescheduled. If BISD cancels regular school classes because of bad weather or other reasons, Beyond the Bell classes will also be cancelled. DISCLOSURE STATEMENT . . . Compete with other teens as you travel across the world each week completing fun and exciting challenges! Select from a wide variety of camp courses such as cooking, soccer, art, dance, basketball, EOC and TSI test prep, driver’s education, and so much more! Students may attend as many or as few weeks as they would like but must preregister for courses. Summer school students may attend after their summer school courses. Bus transportation and meals provided. Open to students entering 8th grade. Cedar Creek High School June 8 - July 30, Mon - Thurs 8 am - 3 pm FREE ferent qualities of clay through a variety of imaginative projects using slab, coils, and extruded clay. We will also paint and stamp underglaze colors. By the week’s end, each child will complete three to five projects. Our doors will open at 8:45 am for the Kids Clay Class and parents must pick your child up no later than 12:15 pm. All materials provided. Students should wear clothing that they don’t mind getting dirty. Minimum of 5 students needed to hold the camp. Mina Elementary July 13 -17, Mon - Fri 11:30 am-1:30 pm $95 CLAY CAMP FOR TEENS, AGES 13–17 This takes clay camp to the next level by introducing students to the potters wheel. Projects will be completed using both handbuilding and the wheel. You will learn basic handbuilding and throwing techniques on the potter’s wheel as well as how to decorate the pot surface. Our focus will be on both the process as well as the final product. You will learn to evaluate your work and be asked to choose the best of the pottery you have made each day. You can expect to complete anywhere from 5 to 15 pieces of pottery in this camp. You must be able to work independently. Children will explore the dif- **There will be a $15 late charge each time a child is picked up after 12:15 pm. It takes approximately 2 weeks to finish the clay camp projects. The process to finish your child’s clay projects 3 entails thoroughly drying, bisque-firing, waxing, clear glazing and glaze-firing. Because of the nature of the process, sometimes the project cracks or breaks in the kiln, but every effort will be made to ensure your child’s work comes out in one piece. Bastrop Intermediate School Rob Vires June 2, Tues 6:30 – 9:00pm $30 FASHION DESIGNER, AGES 8-12 Young girls graduate from playing dress up to designing their own fashions by using the same design principles used by professionals. Principles including basic sketching techniques, coordination colors for the best effect, mixing textures and patterns for scale and perception, and cultural fashion history will be applied to each girl’s individual style and portfolio. Designs come to life with beautifully patterned papers, ribbons, sequins, jewels, and oodles of other embellishments. Collaborative “design team” challenges make this hands-on, minds-on adventure into the world of design very exciting. No sewing necessaryin this class. Designed to inspire creations of things past, present and future, you will explore dinosaurs, prehistoric volcanoes, animals, food, transportation and our solar system. Endless tracks and obstacle courses await every Hot Wheels car lover as they discover the world of math and physical science. Measuring length and weight in various units will help in the identification of the fastest, most efficient car on the block. Develop selfesteem, confidence, and motivation to move forward in reading. The literature of “Story Time” enhances auditory and comprehension skills. “Reading Time” provides kinesthetic activity while enhancing visual and auditory skills as related to sound/ symbol association as well as the construction of take homes. Learn about the uses of robots in the world. Spend time playing with our super cool red-hot robots. Use your skills to build your very own working robot to take home to “live” with you. Following are some topics you will explore during this fun five-day camp. These are only a sample of some of the activities that you will be doing each day. The topics will not necessarily follow this order. However, each of these topics will be included at some point in the camp. Robot Concepts - Roll your way into robot science. Experiment with different robot designs, as you learn what makes a robot work. Invent your own robot designs using recycled materials. Robot Basics - Discover the world of robots as we investigate the differences between humans and their robotic counterparts. What makes a robot work will be explored during hands-on activities and discussions. Robot Building - Each day some time will be spent perfecting a real working robot that we will finish and take home on Friday. Red Hot Robots - Hands-on activities will include fun time with our robots. We will play games and experiment with super cool robots such as a soccer robot, a line tracker, a hyper peppy, and a robotic arm. Robotic Science - Campers will learn how robots use infrared and other sensors to discover the environment they are placed in. Working in groups, we will explore how robots work and how they can make our lives easier. Mad Science Mina Elementary July 20 – 24, Mon - Fri 9:00 am – 12:00 pm $182, plus $30 robot supply fee SECRET AGENT LAB, AGES 6- 12 Mad Science invites you to discover cells and crime during this fun five-day camp. Following are some descriptions of topics you will explore. These are only a sample of some of the activities that we will be doing each day. The topics will not necessarily follow this order. However, each of these topics will be included at some point in the camp. Cell City - Take a fantastic trip into cell city. Learn about cells and the different parts within them. You will after you journey down the Mad Science Organ Trail. Come to camp and meet “Tall Paul”! Paul is a torso model that can have his organs removed and replaced. Paul’s brain, bones, lungs, heart, and digestion system will all be investigated. Make a gutsy apron and a model lung to take home. Scene of the Crime - Team up with fellow campers to solve the “Great Cookie Caper” crime. Arrive at camp to find a real crime scene surrounded by crime scene tape. Walk the grid and collect evidence to solve the crime. All of your observation skills will be needed as you use your new magnifying glasses and notebooks to record your evidence. Use your forensic skills to solve the crime and make your own cookie snack. Chemical Counting - Get ready for a day in the Mad Science Laboratory! Turn a lemon into a battery. Experiment with electrochemical reactions, as you electroplate a penny and a nickel. Learn how chemical elements help you to create chemical compounds. Put your new chemistry know-how to work as you make your own brain goo! Radical Reactions - Ready, set, reactions! Learn with hands-on reactions that matter is never created or destroyed. Make a rainbow and a chemical clock in a cup. Experiment with chemical bonds and whirligigs as you discover conductivity. Make your own invisible ink. Mad Science Mina Elementary July 6 – 10, Mon - Fri 1:30 – 4:30 pm $182 SURVIVAL TACTICS CAMP, AGES 8-12 Wrapped in games and adventure, unique challenges await you. During survival situations, the four basic needs become shelter, water, fire, and food. By introducing basic techniques, your child will learn how to purify water, signal for help, search for edible food, set up shelter, learn Army chants, plus much, much more! Team survival games will keep the training light and fun! This class is essential for kids who like to work and play rough! Enlist now before it’s too late! Mina Elementary July 13 -17, Mon - Fri 2:00 - 4:00 pm $95 TEXAS WILD FLOWERS: PAINTING, AGES 8-12 This course is a two part series. In the first class, your child will be painting a still life of Texas wild flowers in a vase. They will discover how to mix colors and discuss other wild flower scenes. In the second class, students are going to paint a single Texas wild flower, incorporating the use of different backgrounds. Some of the flowers the class will focus on include sunflowers, bluebonnets, and indian paintbrushes. Both paintings will be completed on an 8x10 canvas. We will plan, create, and construct a series of projects while exploring new challenges every day. Using various materials, you will create: a picture scrapbook, a super hero comic strip, artwork, and fashion creations. The scaffolded instruction will make writing fun and allow students to show unique expression through their writing. Writing with voice in all genres from descriptive, narrative, informational. Not as laborious as some writing instruction can be. By practicing creative writing schematics and innovative art challenges, your child will learn to reach their inner ability to express what they are feeling. CLAY CREATIONS This is your opportunity to discover and enjoy the ancient art of ceramics. Try your hand at wheel throwing, handbuilding (or both) to create your own pottery or sculpture. This class is ideal for students of all skill levels, and will cover the basics of different forming techniques, surface decoration, glazing and firing. Bring your own ideas for projects if you like, but don’t worry, the instructor would be happy to make suggestions.
