Richmond to host the 62nd B.C. Chamber of Commerce annual conference in ’14
O
ver this past weekend, delegates
from the Richmond Chamber
of Commerce attended the
61st Annual B.C. Chamber of
Commerce AGM and Conference,
hosted by the Greater Nanaimo
Chamber of Commerce. In 2014
Richmond will host this annual event
which brings hundreds of participants
from across the Province for a weekend
of networking, policy discussions, and
live expert panels. The highlight of this
year’s event was the announcement
that the Vancouver Board of Trade is
now officially a member of the B.C.
Chamber of Commerce, bringing
the total membership up to 36,000
businesses across B.C.
The Richmond Chamber of
Commerce was co-author of four
policies which were passed on the floor
this year and will appear in the B.C.
Chamber 2013/14 Policy and Positions
Manual which is distributed to policy
makers across B.C. and Canada to
guide in the formulation of sound
public policy. Below is a summary
of the four policies which Richmond
was involved with on behalf of our
membership and the community:
Fraser River Flood
Management
The Richmond Chamber of
Commerce believes it is critical
that the Provincial and Federal
government begin working with local
governments and First Nations to
develop a comprehensive, proactive,
long-term strategy to maintain the very
powerful and harnessed Fraser River.
A major flood would result in severe
social, economic and environmental
impacts, including billions of dollars in
damage to private and public property,
temporary loss of infrastructure and
community services and disruption
of business and trade. In addition to
activity and 10% of
the National GDP.
Without federal support
of navigable waters
the ability to develop
and grow this vital
transportation route
to the Asia Pacific
will be limited. The
Richmond Chamber
of Commerce believes
that it is time the
Federal Government,
the Province, and First
Nations develop a
proactive long-term
strategy to restore and
maintain the Fraser
River as a sustainable
transportation route.
This national heritage
river is the backbone
of transportation
for the Asia-Pacific
Gateway and is of

essential transportation channel to be
upgrades in coming years. As a driving

factor in Canada’s economic prosperity, to Canada’s economic future for
and the backbone of the province, the
generations to come.
Fraser River must be maintained to

and public safety.
The Richmond Chamber believes
Fraser River Navigation
Management
The Fraser is the largest river in
British Columbia, traversing 1,400
hundred kilometers from its base
at Mt. Robson, to its mouth at the
Salish Sea; in addition to being one
of the most economically significant
waterways in the country, accounting
for 80% of provincial economic
that the benefits of Intermunicipal
mobile business licenses to local
governments, business, and residents
have been successfully demonstrated
by the success of the OkanaganSimilkameen, Fraser Valley, and
other pilot programs across the
Province. Despite the clear benefits,
the program has been slow to expand
which maintains increased costs for
local governments, businesses, and
ultimately results in higher fees for the
taxpayer. It is hoped that the continued
introduction of regional mobile license
programs is an interim step towards
the eventual goal of a single, province
wide, equitable licensing program for
all business.
Improving Air Access for the
Benefit of the Economy
British Columbia has a great deal
to lose if Canada’s aviation policy
is not liberalized. By one estimate,
restrictive air access policies result
in an estimated $800M loss to B.C.’s
GDP by discouraging traffic growth.
Although it is a sound policy in
theory, Blue Sky Agreements have
not resulted in the changes required
to make Canada’s aviation industry
globally competitive. With its position
as Canada’s Pacific Gateway, British
Columbia is particularly vulnerable
to the negative effects of an aviation
policy that does not encourage
competition. The lack of progress on
this issue has significant consequences
for the economic health of Metro
Vancouver. As home to the Vancouver
International Airport the Richmond
Chamber of Commerce firmly believes
that we must negotiate open skies
policies to create a fair opportunity for
those willing to provide air access to
Canadian cities.
Advocacy is one of the primary
roles of Chambers of Commerce.
The Richmond Chamber provides the
business community with a united
voice, addressing important local and
global issues. A strong membership
ensures that we can continue to work
on behalf of our members to help
build a robust economy and strong
community. Please contact us at 604278-2822 or www.richmondchmaber.

Getting social with the RCC
T
he Richmond
Chamber of
Commerce online
directory gives our
members the ability to see
exactly how many referrals
and profile views they
get within a given period
of time. This month, our
members have received
724 referrals on average.
What does that
mean? It means people
are looking for you!
When they find your
organization on our
directory, they’re
able to send a secure
email, view your main
contact person, see your
location on a map as
well as view your
website, phone, and
fax lines.
There are also some
special features new
to the Chamber of
which smart members
should take advantage.
You’ve probably already
invested a bit of time in
social media. Whether
you have an entire
Social Media Marketing
Strategy or just a
salesperson with an
active Twitter account,
let your company tell
your story. When a
visitor to our website
sees your business
among others of the
same category, the
information from your
social media accounts
can play a huge role
in differentiating you
from the competition.
Now, you can link
to your social media
accounts right on your
directory page. Twitter,
LinkedIn, Facebook,
Youtube and many
more are all avenues to
drive customers to your
organization.
Imagine, as a
Chamber member,
you’re looking for
a business advisor.
Because you’re already
an RCC member,
you visit the online
directory for a warm
referral. A list of 12
seemingly equally
qualified consultants
come up as a result
of your search. How
do you choose who to
call? Chances are that
the more information
you can see
immediately, the more
likely you’ll be
to get
a good sense of each
business advisor and be
more able to make an
informed decision.
Wouldn’t you
like to make it easy
for your potential
customers to do
business with you?
For instructions
on adding social
media links to your
directory listing or
accessing your referrals
report, please call the
Richmond Chamber of
Commerce at 604-2782822.
