The Clifton Suspension
Bridge was designed by
Isambard Kingdom Brunel,
it is the symbol of the city of
Bristol. For over 150 years
this Grade 1 listed structure
has attracted visitors from all
over the world.
The bridge joins Bristol
and North Somerset and
is owned and operated by
Clifton Suspension Bridge
Trust. It is entirely funded
by tolls – which have paid
for it’s upkeep since it first
opened to the public on 8th
December 1864.

Clifton is home to a ‘secret’ railway… Clifton Rocks
Railway, built inside the cliffs of the Avon Gorge,
closed just before World War 2. Behind the entrance
to the station at
the bottom
of the Gorge is
a tunnel cut
through the rock,
which emerges
next to the Avon
Gorge Hotel.
