He was a hard-knocks scouser, almost completely void of a decent sense of humour. But he did say, “Son, always speak your mind; but learn when to hold your tongue.” He didn’t always practise what he preached and I neither do I, but he believed then and I believe to this day, that an honest person of principle and sound mind should never be afraid to voice those principles or sound thoughts, often regardless of ‘the cost.’ Because if those words are true, price may be irrelevant. Posts that regurgitate the same content and show no knowledge of the discussion going on in the thread will be edited and/or removed That said, Part 2 of Dad’s mantra does have its place. Never tell the man with a gun to your head that his mother wears army boots, even if she does. Retreat, come back another day with a tank and tell him then. And never hurt people with words that need not be spoken, or could be expressed with greater diplomacy. And maybe sometimes, if you can’t say anything nice, try saying nothing at all until your bloody outlook on life improves! GoBigFascist Rule #2: No flaming of members I think I know what Dad meant, and I’m quite sure of the value of everyone speaking their minds, for better or worse... it’s a fundamental tool of progress and change. Opinions are both unique and universal, and no-one, absolutely no-one can claim to hold the patent and sole-usage rights. Of course, not everyone’s opinion is valid, some are simply absurd, some are on the right track yet lack substance, and others have all too much substance yet are clearly on the wrong track. Such is life. We need them all I’d imagine, regardless. GoBigFascist Rule #3: ...any attacks on players, coaches, posters and the likes (regardless of how well founded your POV is) will not be tolerated Which brings us to Elaine Sun, the tyrannical cheerleader pioneering the web-based, pantiesup tribute to our women wearing the big red jersey – GoBigRed.ca. UBC, TWU and UVIC all played a series of matches against NCAA schools. UVIC came away with three ties against NCAA Div. 2 schools. RICHARD HOWES / BC FOOTBALL PHOTO BANK N ■MWSL PREMIER CUP FINAL WINNERS RICHARD HOWES / BC FOOTBALL PHOTO BANK F ortunately the rain eased off in South Surrey Apr. 3 and the MWSL Premier Cup Final was played in relatively fine weather. Though Sportstown UBC and Coquitlam City were evenly matched, Sportstown more or less camped in Coquitlam territory for the bulk of the first half, during which time they were able to score the only goal of the match. Coquitlam came out steaming after half time and really took it to Sportstown, but created few scoring opportunities, consistent with Sportstown’s shutouts throughout the Cup Finals, including a 3–0 Quarter-final rout of Richmond followed by a 2–0 saucing of Surrey United. — R. Howes Fortune smiles on Inter ■Peter Vranjkovic, Vancouver C hampionship teams have to be good and lucky, as ICSF Inter showed when it took top honours this year after defeating Surrey United 3–2 Apr. 10 in the VMSL Premier A & B Playoff. Though Surrey scored first Inter tied the match, then won it in the second overtime thanks to two goals from Sheldon Maistry. Inter, who will also face Croatia in the Imperial Cup Final, received $1,200.00 from the VMSL for winning the League and Surrey received $800.00. Both performances were of far better quality than the field on which they played. Footballers with flair Inter was fortunate to make it into the championship game, needing to win its last regular season match against Croatia to finish ahead of Sapperton Rovers and Westside Rino. Croatia, missing Johnny Sulentic and resting several other starters, played with very little heart and Inter had an easy 3–1 victory. Inter and Sapperton waged a season long battle for top spot in Group A, only to have BCbriefs T-Birds topple hosts for the Cup Due to Simon Fraser’s late withdrawal, only three of the four top division schools were in attendance at the UVIC Keg Spring Cup. Thompson Rivers U. (f. UCC) rounded out the field and though they can be applauded for making the trip from Kamloops, the Sun Demons were in over their heads. UVIC pressured early and cruised to the Final with a 5–0 thrashing of Thompson while Trinity Western and UBC staged a tough but dull affair. Niko Marcina opened the scoring for the T-Birds on a free kick. Trinity battled back, pulled even with less than 15 minutes to go, and held on for the shootout, but after the Spartans missed their fourth, UBC was off to meet the host Vikes. The Consolation Final showed the ever-widening gap between CIS schools and the BC College League. Spartans led 2–0 lead by halftime and wholesale Sun Demon second-half subs failed to slow their momentum. Spartans put three more past the overmatched Thompson before the final whistle. The Final between UBC and UVIC was a close match with neither side taking advantage of first-half opportunities. It wasn’t until midpoint of the second that T-Birds striker Luke Sandilands found an opening to put UBC in front. The hosts battled back but could not find a way to break UBC’s tight, marking defense or beat Nikolai Matni between the posts. — HAB, Vancouver ■VMSL u21 CUP FINAL WINNERS orvan Saints outplayed Surrey United 2–1 in a spirited game played in awful, blustery weather at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, Mar. 26. Surrey failed to capitalise on several first-half opportunities while they had the strong wind in their favour. Despite a valiant second-half effort United struggled to hold off Norvan’s persistent attacks, nor could Surrey penetrate the Saints’ solid defence. Norvan’s second straight defeat of Surrey in the u21 Cup Final culminated an impressive Cup run including a 2–1 victory over Croatia and a 3–1 whomping of Westside in the Semi’s. The Saints also commanded the League title, finishing five points clear of 2nd place Rino with a qualified 10–1–1 record. — R. Columbus-Clan which was created after Columbus and SFU-Clan teams merged and recruited some of the top amateur talent in BC showed great promise but played inconsistently. Columbus-Clan fielded Canadian u20 player Tyler Rosenlund, and Canadian u18 player and last years scoring champ, Alex Elliot, plus former Caps Tiernan King, Carmen D’Onofrio and Richie Sumner, and league scoring champion Joe Scigliano. Westside beat both of them the last couple weeks to make it a three way contest. Inter were led by midfielder Brian Van Schagen and strikers Kevin Crouch, and Andrew Corazza, and received valuable contributions from Whitecaps players Steve Kindel, Kevin Harmse and Tino Cucca. Westside was led by midfielder Steve Dickenson and were bolstered mid-season by several UBC players and goalie Serjdan Djekanovic, who returned from Europe. He recently caught the eye of Gordon Campbell’s 2005 Premier Athlete Award panel who, in recognition of Alexander’s outstanding achievements in football, bestowed the annual accolade. The VMSL All-star team lost a close match 4–2 to Whitecaps FC Apr. 5 in Tsawassen. Scoreless at the half, the Caps were unable to score until the VMSL made seven subs. The Caps then scored two quick second-half goals. The VMSL equalized but two late Caps strikes decided the game. Chris Clarke and Johnny Sulentic scored for the VMSL, with Breure, Dickenson and Jeff Skinner turning in strong performances. Also on the All-star roster were keeper Dennis Kindel, defenders Steve Miller, Graeme Megowen, Darko Jelic, Mark and Mike Gomes, midfielders Joseph Marrello, Adam Costley, Matt Mori, Todd Stauber, and Mike Favaro, and strikers Elliot and Andrew Veer. The All-stars were selected by a committee of league governors, following the nomination by each team of its five top players. Eight All-stars – Breure, both Gomes, Miller, Stauber, Mori, King and Veer were on the 2004 All-star squad which lost close 2–1 matches to Millwall and the Whitecaps. — Peter Vranjkovic, Vancouver Sparse victory over Spartans After watching Whitecaps FC escape with a razor thin 1–0 victory over Trinity Western Spartans Apr. 9, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Should I applaud the incredibly gutsy performance by the entire Spartan squad or react in horror to the Whitecaps complete inability to create chances. Should I marvel at the fantastic saves made by 4th year keeper Chris Cecil or wonder at the inability of Caps strikers to put away what few chances they had? The Caps were being exposed, much like the second-half streaker, and it wasn’t until the third minute of injury time that a Caps counter-attack found Steve Frazao and Said Ali two-on-one. Frazao slid the ball to Ali who fired past an onrushing Cecil. In the end a solitary Caps fan’s voice rose over the hushed pro Spartan crowd and began to chant, “onenil, one-nil, one-nil,” and I couldn’t decide, was he deriding the TWU Spartans for an inability hold out for the draw, or was he mocking his own Whitecaps for their complete lack of imagination in attack? Still, it was an exciting match yet both sides unable to put away their chances. — HAB, Vancouver Canada news p.4–7 FOOTBALLpages WORLD 4 This editorial page is made possible by the support of Whitecaps FC 53 • April 2005 WHITECAPSfc USL 1st Div., W–League, PCSL Super Y, Academy, DDC Lilley impressed with pre-season preperations W JOSH DEVINS JOSH DEVINS ith less than a month remaining before Whitecaps FC kick off their 2005 USL campaign, Bob Lenarduzzi, Director of Soccer Operations, and head coach Bob Lilley are busy planning daily training sessions at Simon Fraser University and finalizing contracts. The essence of the model is to successfully develop and prepare players for opportunities at the national, international and professional levels. In order for the model to function within British Columbia, the Whitecaps partnered with both the BCSA and the CSA to create a path from community and club teams, to provincial and eventually national levels. Much of the development emphasis rests in the important community and district organizations that act as the foundation for programs such as the District Development Centre (DDC). I was looking for a career that I could combine with soccer. It just made sense.” Partner Girodo’s athletic history and experience in strategic planning with clothing companies, and foreign investments, no doubt provides muscle and confidence, “He is the ultimate entrepreneur, an idea man,” smiles Allen. Capleoa will need the optimism to keep the ball rolling. The athletic garment industry is no place for the meek and the familiar big brands pack an awful punch at the feeding grounds. Certainly, outfitting female athletes is a multimillion dollar industry but a share of the spoils will take something unique. By default Capleoa is a terrific bit of Canadiana, and there, the upstart apparel brand just might find distinction. Capleoa, of Vancouver, is the brainchild of a Canadian athlete, with products designed by Canadians for Canadians and tested every day by some of Canada’s biggest footballing felines. “All our players except for Kara Lang (NCAA rules) are sponsored athletes and at this point they receive product. As we become profitable we'll be paying these players, and looking to expand outside of soccer to other sports where we can support Canadian athletes. It's something close to my heart." In my first international match, I'm standing at the Algarve Cup, 2002, and they played the National Anthem, and I felt so incredibly overwhelmed, and so incredibly proud to represent my country. And from that point on I focused on trying to buy things locally that are made in Canada. It was some sort of switch in my mind. And it adds strength to our business model. It's definitely a Canadian brand. I gotta count my lucky stars. Whitecaps FC, the CSA, the BCSA et al. They all endorse foreigners. Still, girl-friendly design and materials built and priced to feel and look as good or better than any foreign brand, should be enough to win over thousands of females playing football and other hi-test sports. Capleoa is clearly built for performance and Allen can talk a mile a minute of the philosophy that led to both the conception of the clothing, and the attitude of the players who will wear it. The welldesigned website (www.capleoa.com) tells the tale in all its glory. It’s unlikely that Capleoa will develop clothing for bigger, hairier males (though Allen suggested Capleoa is getting a tonne of calls from guys saying, “I love that fabric.”), but Girodo has top secret plans and technologies in place ADAM BLASBERG PHOTOGRAPHY I t’s no mystery to Whitecaps FC fans that Chilliwack native Amber Allen is not afraid to get stuck in. On the field she’s all heart and boots, a smart and indispensible forward with the essence that embodies all strikers...predatory instinct. She’s a menace, 50/50 balls are hers and any chance to score is a chance taken, but she’ll claim that in life off the field, she’s traditionally far more reserved. “I don’t usually take risks,” she says in a quiet coffee shop close to Metrotown, “I had a full-time job with the Federal Government... how less risky can you be!” But she took a big risk August 2004 with her businesssavvy boyfriend Paul Girodo, launching the partnership Capleoa – a brand entity of her parent company, PonyTail Girl Designs. "I think it started with Paul, and with me sitting in the stands injured, and Paul looking around saying, ‘Dya know everybody is wearing a HOW CANADIAN IS THAT: ponytail. This most Capleoa has not neglected be a phenomenal its roots in providing market. What can Canada’s fastet-growing we do to create a recreational breed with product that taps fully-functional Apres exercise accessories, including into their love of the most recognisable of the sport, that we Canadiana – the toque happen to love?’” Capleoa is the evolution of that question, and of Allen’s desire to further her own purpose, beyond grass-green hunting grounds. Packing degrees, and experience in PR and event-management, Allen is as talented off-field as on, and it appears that she’s perfectly motivated and equipped for a risk or two. On women rolling up sleeves... Amber Allen takes a rare risk and, with Paul Girodo – partner in love and business – launches ■cjvg 5 On nothing to do with the Caps... The lioness is a phenominal animal. In translation lioness and Leoa are the same. It's Portuguese… can I say that! We looked at trademarking Leoa, but the Lions Club has Leo. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! (news at 11) to tackle male bacterial issues – who knew! Do women have this problem we enquired. “Not at all,” was Allen’s prompt reply, giggling, “Scratch that one.” Sure! Regardless, the women’s line will expand in time from the current dozen or so items, and Capleoa may branch out to other sports. Allen may also quietly agree that FIFA president Sepp Blatter once had a point regarding sexier apparel for female footballers. Athletic women wearing form-fitting, breathable Capleoa gear look good. The clothing hugs the body beautiful and, even if not purposely by design, it’s a byproduct characteristic that many female athletes will appreciate. Why hide what one has worked so hard to tone. “I am women, here me roar” would be the cheesiest of slogans for Capleoa, but for Allen's proud, brave, pioneering heart, it would be fitting nonetheless. ● PORT COQUITLAM SOCCER is pleased to announce the appointment of DAVID SHANKLAND as Director of Player & Coach Development GIRLS Metro Tryouts U14 Metro (born 1992) Apr. 23, 10am–12pm • Apr. 24 10am–12pm • Apr. 27, 6–8pm Contact: Chrisi Lamb 604.941.8499 [email protected] U15 Metro (born 1991) April 16, 10am–12pm • Apr. 18, 6–8pm • Apr. 20, 6–8pm Apr. 21, 6–8pm Contact: Horacio Frazao 604.469.0960 [email protected] or Claude Kisteman 604-944-0110 [email protected] U16 Metro (born 1990) Apr. 20, 6–8pm • Apr. 28, 6–8pm • Apr. 30, 11am–2pm Contact: Mike Duffels 604-941-6272 [email protected] Gates Park Turf is located at Reeves St. and Wilson Ave., Port Coq. Canada has put in some excellent performances, in part, but has been plagued by costly errors. Of note, Pat Onstad’s goalkeeping blunders took the wind out of the sails in regards to World Cup 2006. Now, with a 50/50 record for 2005 todate, Canada looks to build momentum heading into July’s Gold Cup in the USA. Against Portugal Mar. 26, it was costly errors again that ruined an otherwise gritty and at times brilliant performance – keeper Lars Hirschfeld fanned on a swerving Manuel Fernandes shot, and poor defense by Marco Reda and Kevin Mckenna allowed Pauleta to score an easy goal, running in unmarked to tap in past a helpless Hirschfeld. After that, Canada settled down and played some very good possession soccer for much of the game. According to coach Frank Yallop, “It was a good performance and a bad result at the same time. We were punished by our mistakes. At the same time, we kept our poise and had a better second half.” He added, “Portugal finishes at a level that is much higher than ours, and that was the difference, and why they are ranked ninth in the world.” Of the several bright spots, Atiba Hutchinson is playing better each outing, and it was he who unleashed a wicked second-half shot that forced a fine save; Mike Klukowski is looking more comfortable at the back and is reading the game well; while Marco Reda is moving the ball out of the back better as he gets to know his teammates; the team kept up a strong work rate against Portugal which was typified by midfielder Paul ‘Diesel’ Stalteri; the improving Julian de Guzman will play next year with Deportivo La Coruna in the Spanish top flight and finally; Dwayne de Rosario, while lacking some control at the finish, is certainly creating more opportunities. Concerns remain however as Yallop searches for the right combination in the central defence, an area in which Canada lacks pace and can get caught chasing fleet-footed forwards. The right duo may involve Tam Nsaliwa who, according to Yallop “...will be invited to a possible May friendly against Guatemala if he decides that he wants to play for Canada.” Nsaliwa has been playing the central defender role for his club in Germany. In addition, Klukowski may be partnered in the middle with either Reda or McKenna to provide more pace and mobility. Goalkeeping is another concern for Yallop as Hirschfeld has proven to be inconsistent, due to a lack of club play, and the promising Greg Sutton, while certainly a talent, has not yet established himself as the number one. The u20 prospect Joshua Wagenaar, and journeyman Kenny Stamatopoulos are also in the goalkeeping mix. Since the days of Dale Mitchell Canada has lacked a creative midfield general. Yallop CSAbriefs explained that, “Canadian soccer does not produce such players, and there are not so many in the world. What we need to ensure is that we have two very good defensive-minded midfielders on the pitch and two who are more offensively minded. If we can strike that balance, then the rest will sort itself out.” In regards to the Gold Cup, players who are ‘in season’ in Scandinavian countries will likely form the backbone of the team, with support from MLS and USL Div. 1-based players. “I will include some Europe-based players,” explained Yallop, “so Iain Hume will play up front because we need him in that area.” Several ‘Europeans’ such as Tomasz Radzinski will, by mutual consent, not participate. “Tomasz and I both understand that we need to look ahead with some younger players, but if he is playing well when it really counts, then he will certainly be seriously considered. Tomasz is squarely behind the program and supports what is best for the team,” emphasized Yallop. Gold Cup preparations will include the May match against Guatemala and another match to be played in Vancouver July 2 or 3, possibly against Honduras or Nicaragua. “We will play an experimental team against Guatemala so I can see some more players,” said Yallop. Such a team may include Kilmarnock’s Rhian Dodds who has yet to play for the senior squad, and Rocco Placentino who is currently playing in Italy. “I am not going to bring in too many new faces at this time, “reassured Yallop, “because I want to get the players used to working together. At the same time, there are two or three who I want to see for sure.”● CDAgames Men’s: international friendlies Canada 1–0 Northern Ireland Feb. 9, 2004, Belfast, N. England will play two games in the US in May in their first visit since 1994. The USA will be England’s first opponent May 28 at Chicago’s Soldier Field, and Colombia will be the foe at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, May 31. The May 28 match will be broadcast live on ESPN at 2pm CT. Both clubs were Quarter-finalists in the 2002 World Cup, both losing to the eventual finalists – England were lobbed 2–1 by Brazil while USA were bored to death 1–0 by Germany. Their most memorable FIFA-class match together would be the USA’s infamous 1–0 victory in the First Round of the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. The May 28 date will mark England’s sixth visit to the United States, with England posting a convincing 4–0–1 record to-date, including a 29–6 goal advantage. England’s victories included 6–3, 8–1, 10–0 and 5–0 decisions in 1953, ’59, ’64 and ’85, respectively. The US fought back June 9, 1993, in Foxboro, Mass., with an historic 2–0 victory on goals by Thomas Dooley and Alexi Lalas. England’s Sven-Goran Eriksson said, “Playing the USA in their own country is a big test. He should wash his tongue and clean Beckham’s boots.” Alberto, still reeling from Azerbaijan’s 8–0 humiliation at the boots of Poland Mar. 26, barred no holds in his scathing critique of the little man who can. “I have been in this life for 45 years. This man – what’s his name, the number 10, the small one who doesn’t play in the Real Madrid first team – said that if Poland beat Azerbaijan 8-0, England should score at least eight goals and he’d score five of them. “Who is Michael Owen anyway? What has he ever won in football? It is not right for him to say that he can score five goals against Azerbaijan. Where are those five goals tonight? He didn’t score one. Who is he anyway? Who is he?’ “I don’t accept this, he is not a man. I would say this to his face if he was here. I hope he is back on the bench when Real Madrid play this weekend. This man, this midget, I refuse to talk about him any more. I will talk about Beckham, Rooney, Ferdinand or Lampard, but not this midget. This midget ought to clean the boots of Beckham as they are so wet tonight.” On a more conciliatory note Alberto added, “England deserved to win as they have a wonderful team. Liverpool did the impossible by defeating the cream of Italy’s Serie A, Juventus, in the 1st Leg of the Quarter-finals, to the tune of 2–1, on strikes from Sami Hyypia and a wonder-goal from Spanish midfielder, Luis Garcia. The 1st Leg victory was all sweeter given they managed this improbable feat without the likes of Fernando Morientes, Djibril Cisse, Xabi Alonso or Chris Kirland. The return leg at Delle Alpi in Turin lacked the energy of the Anfield affair, excepting the secondhalf siege of the Dudek’s goal area. Combined they’ve made 53 appearances in the Final with Arsenal, Man U and Newcastle topping the charts, in that order however, it’s the Red Devils who’ve taken home the most trophies (11) since the first Cup in 1872. Arsenal have won nine while Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers each lay claim to six. 0 2 3 2 3 2 1 0 0 1 0 2 0 1 3 0 0 Northern Ireland Austria Finland Russia Sweden Slovakia Andorra Iceland Azerbaijan Republic of Ireland Kazakhstan Netherlands Albania Bosnia-Herz. Newcastle have clearly demonstrated they’re ready for a fight, with anyone, and hope to win their first Cup since 1955. 2004 winners (3–0 over Millwall), Man U, may be destined for a repeat appearance in the May 21 Final. Sol Campbell may return for the Gunners to pound a struggling Blackburn who haven’t actually won a Cup since they beat Huddersfield Town in 1928. They were also the first of this year’s final four to win it all, in 1884 (the first of three straight). Arsenal have been in three of the last four, winning in 2003 and 2002, over Southampton and Chelsea respectively. We’ve never felt so wanted as we have in the last 24 hours — Rovers’ assistant boss Mark Bowen amused by the FA Cup Semi-final draw. How they assembled such a mighty squad is part luck, part skill and part fortune. The skill was in the draft, where Steve Weir drafted from the u8 Bumblebees; (unbeaten in the previous season’s League), Rachel, Bria, Sam, Ellen, Chelsey and Chelsea. The luck came in the unknown qualities of Manisha, Hannah E, Hannah B, Justine, Shawna and Rossanna, while fortune was the dynamite of Ciara who Weir pulled from a u7 team – possibly the discovery of the century. Every training session instilled in the Wildcats the British bulldog spirit, fitness, aggression and skill. Endurance and speed drills ensured fitness, including the infamous Dog Sprints. Aggression was forged in the ‘Circle of Death’ shielding drill while co-coach Tony Shears demonstrated ever-changing skill drills. The Wildcats first game ended 1–1 – the only points dropped, as they won the next 25 games straight, finishing the year as undisputed champions of their age group. In league play which included three shutouts, the cat pack scored an incredible 92 goals, conceding only 18. With a weakened team over Christmas they entered the PSE Mini-Soccer Festival and won all four games (shutouts) to win Gold. With a full strength squad they recently competed in the popular ICSF Tournament, with the best from around the Lower Mainland. They destroyed their first two opponents by the same 5–1 scoreline before shutting out ICSF 2–0. The last victim was the Guildford Stars, who had lost only one game in three years of playing together. In freezing tions. The u16 Selects played a spirited contest but came out on the short end of a 1–0 score, as Richmond struck on a free kick. The Selects season is now over. Winning the Alan Gaster Cup complements five straight League Cups by the All-Blacks, and brings the Shamrock Rovers’ string of three straight division titles to an end. Heading into the final action of the regular season, the All-Blacks have secured a spot in this summer’s BC Championships, leaving the Dragons, Firefighters and Rovers to fill the remaining two spots. The second- and third-place finishers in the Premier Division will get the nod. The Ravens and Harps will be relegated to the First Division, with the A’s and Aero Turbine slated for promotion to the Premier Division. Celtic and Hammerheads have been relegated to the Second Division, with Fairview heading up to the First Division next season. Adidas used Cole’s biochemics and digital-modeling expertise to develop an idea; that shooting with the 290 gram Predator Pulse II would increase ball velocity up to three percent. More velocity = less time for the keeper to react. Pulse technology employs Optimal Mass Distribution, moving the centre of gravity to where it matters most; closest to the point of impact. We are responsible for the reactions we give; the contents of our changed emotions. Maybe it is because I recently fell in love for only the second time in my life, that I am even thinking about this. For certain, since I got dumped by the focus of my love, Catherine, I have been drawing upon the experience and insight I have come to possess by virtue of being a follower of football. Put simply, love is a football match. We can be uncommitted – just there for the sexy jazzy stuff, but not really en amour with any personalities on the pitch or; we can be neutral – just dragged along to a match by a friend and therefore watching in a love ‘em and leave ‘em mood and forgetting the whole affair the next day, perhaps even having to be reminded later of the teams and score. Only the die-hards claim to love a football team with the kind of affection we humans normally save for a sentient, animate being. Yet every now and then we fall in love, totally by surprise, not expecting it, just going about our day unaware of subtle changes in the atmosphere, and then Vroom!... a tide beyond our own ego sweeps us away and we explode into compulsive, irrational, dependent, obsessive, insecure, complicit and alive like never before fireballs. O’Flynn thrilled to be alive Calamity not! I am kind of excited to get this video Chris. It can’t be that bad. Thank you for the blurb and photos in regards to the Gaelic Games. Getting ready to purchase my three Whitecaps season tickets by the deadline next week. A small fortune but am looking forward to it all! I’m lookin’ forward to the England vs. Northern Ireland game tomorrow. Supporting Northern Ireland is kind of like supporting Canada... except without the red and white colour scheme. England will win, I just want Northern Ireland to find the back of England’s net once or twice. Who’s in goal for England? I hope it’s David James. — John O’Flynn, Vancouver, BC ■ Being a Celt, John should understand Murphy’s Law; what can go wrong, will. Can his prize DVD ‘Victory’ be that bad, of course it can, unless you listen to Don Scheutze on p.16, who insists it’s a movie of epic proportions, much like the cost of John’s Whitecaps tickets. N. Ireland’s bubble was popped flat as a pint of Guinness minutes into the second half, and Stuart’s impressive gambling losses rolled on.
