Pilgrim Press. 1981
Praise be to God. the Almighty, who rules all creation.
o my soul, worship the well-spring of health and salvation. Let all who hear Now to God 's temple draw near, Joining in glad adoration! Praise be to God, who o'er all things is wondrously reigning, Bringing new life, in great mercy redeeming, sustaining. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do. Ponder God's gracious ordaining. Praise be to God, who works justice, who ends all oppressing. God's name most holy let Israel always be blessing. Rise up on wings, Healing and wholeness God brings. Always God's deeds be confessing. Praise be to God, 0 forget not God's manifold graces. All that has life and breath, one song of gratitude raises. Let the amen sound from God's people again. Gladly forever sing praises.
AMEN. INVOCATION Mr. Butler

Cum Laude; those with a 3.7 to 3 .9 are graduated Magna Cum Laude; those with 3.5 to 3.7 are graduated
Cum Laude.
Students with the requisite grade point average who have completed with distinction Honors work in
the major field of study including a Senior Honors Project are recognized as having attained Depart
mental Honors. Those who complete an interdisciplinary Seniors Honors Project involving more than one
major field of study receive Interdepartmental Honors. Those with the requisite grade point average who
have completed with distinction. the four interdisciplinary Honors Colloquia are recognized as having a~.
tained University Honors.
TRADITION OF ACADEMIC DRESS The history of academic dress dates from at least the twelfth century
when long gowns were needed for warmth in the unheated buildings used by
medieval scholars. In England, both Oxford and Cambridge made academic
dress a matter of university surveillance, and both institutions regulated what
colors, trim, etc. could be used by faculty and students. In May 1895, repre~
sentatives from American institutions of higher learning met at Columbia Un~
iversity and formulated a "code of academic dress" which has generally been
followed since that time, although some revisions were initiated in 1932 and
in 1960.
The dress code recommended that gowns for the bachelor's degree should
be worn closed and should have pointed sleeves. Gowns for the master's degree
can be worn open or closed, but their sleeves are oblong in shape with open
wrists. Gowns worn by those holding the doctorate degree also can be worn
open or closed and feature bell shaped sleeves.
Gowns from different institutions vary in color, but most are black.
Neither the bachelors' nor the masters' gowns feature trim, but doctoral gowns
are faced down the front with black velvet and hold three bars of the same
fabric across the sleeves. Sometimes these facings and sleeve~bars are velvet
of the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains, thus agree~
ing in color with the binding or edging of the hood appropriate to the parti~
cular doctoral degree of the wearer.
Hoods are to be of the same color and material as the gowns and are lined
with the official color (s) of the college or university conferring the degree.
Bindings or edgings for the hoods reflect the color distinctive of the subje\:t to
which the degree pertains. Bachelors' hoods are three feet in length; masters'
hoods are three and one half feet in length; doctoral hoods measure four feet
in length.
For all academic purposes, including the trimmings of gowns, hoods,
and tassels, the colors associated with the different academic subject field are
as follows:

eONGRATULATIONS, GRADUATE,
The members of the TeU Alumni Association join me in congratu
lating you on the culmination of your academic effort at the University.
The completion of one effort often heralds the beginning of another, and,
in this, your fellow alumni wish you well.
You and the members of your class are important to the Association
and the Alma Mater we serve. We are proud of the financial support we
have given that continues to grow each year. We are proud of the support
we lend to help provide higher academic goals for tomorrow's students.
Much that you have enjoyed here in both faculty and facilities has been
made possible by the generous support of graduates who have preceded you.
We encourage you to keep in touch with the Alumni Office. Let us
know of your accomplishments, your activities and your interests. Keep
us informed of your address, and we will keep you informed about the
University and about Alumni Association events such as homecoming, class
reunions, and alumni activities in your area. Your presence and participation
in these programs will afford lasting friendships among classmates and other
alumni.
You are the reason for the Association, and we welcome you to the
fellowship of alumni throughout the world.
Sincerely.
