shares Vicky Millard, owner of the

Mommy and Me At New Location
Mommy and Me is the first tenant to open in the new Burlingame
Crossing strip mall on the southwest corner of 29th and Burlingame
Rd. The store, in suite 500, was previously located (for 17 years) in
Shawnee Plaza on SE 29th.
“Our store was the first resale store
in Topeka to open in a strip mall and
provide an upscale shopping environment,” says owner, Karen
Shaffer. “At our new location we are
bigger and better than ever, with
3,300 square feet of space—making
us the largest children’s resale store
in northeast Kansas. We were able to
design the store’s layout to fit our
needs...giving us much more room
for our merchandise, large dressing
rooms and a nice play area with a
TV for children.
“Right now, we’re brimming with
a beautiful selection of spring and
summer fashions. All items are
organized and easy to get to, with
clean, wide maneuverable aisles.
“We carry all sizes of maternity
wear, and children’s sizes from
newborn to size junior 1 in girls,
and 18-20 in boys. We also offer a
large selection of baby equipment
and new gift items, along with new
First Communion and flower girl
dresses and tuxedos.
“With the many recent recalls of
Part of the Mommy and Me team
toys and children’s products—we
continue to be a resource for parents
regarding child safety information.
We always have on file the most current information on government
recalls pertaining to children’s products. And, we can help parents identify recalled products.”
Mommy and Me has been offering
quality, affordable, gently used clothing, toys and accessories since 1991.
They are a member of the National
Association of Resale and Thrift
Shops, which assures you of their professionalism in the resale industry.
The store’s inventory is purchased
from customers who are paid immediately with cash or store credit. For full
details on buying days and requirements, as well as store hours see:

Seven Reasons Why You Should Shop At Slumberland Furniture
Bud Kottman, along with his wife
Treava, owns Slumberland Furniture at 1800 SW Wanamaker.
“We’ve designed our store to accommodate our customers,” says Bud,
“and developed at least seven reasons
why people should shop with us:
(1) With our large turnover, customers will always find a variety of
fresh new items to select from. We
truly try to find and offer unique
items that other stores do not carry.
Sometimes we have new products on
our floor up to three months before
they’re available in other stores. Our
store presents a full line of dining
room sets, sofas, room groupings,
occasional chairs, home office and
entertainment room furnishings...
and, of course, a full line of bedroom
furniture.
(2) Customers can enjoy their new
selections quicker. Some stores take 6to-8 weeks to get ordered items in.
When customers made purchases
here, in December, our records show
that in 96.4% of all the items ordered,
most were received in 3-to-4 days.
(3) We carry every major brand of
bedding: Sealy Posture-pedic;
Simmons Beautyrest; Sleep Number;
Stearns & Foster and Tempur-pedic.
We’re the only store around where
people can try out all the different
options...air, foam or coil mattresses
in about 10 minutes. That
means we give people back
their valuable time and save
them the price of gas it
would take to drive from
store to store.
(4) Slumberland is the
world’s largest La-Z-Boy
retailer...people will find a
bigger selection of La-ZBoy products here than
anywhere else.
(5) We understand that
price is important when
people purchase new items
for their homes. While many stores
concentrate on finding the cheapest
items to offer, we look for value.
(What good is it to pay $499 for a
new sofa if it’s of poor quality and
poor style?) At Slumberland, value
means we have the price points people are looking for, and they don’t
have to sacrifice style and quality.
(6) We eliminate the middlemen. A
few years ago many U.S. companies
started outsourcing manufacturing to
overseas companies. This made all
of those name brand companies that
we grew up with nothing more than
marketing companies, or ‘middlemen.’ Slumberland, on the other
hand, has a team that actually visits
all of these factories in an attempt to
find the items that give our customers
the best value. We buy directly from
these factories and eliminate the
middlemen, thereby reducing the
initial cost, so we can pass the savings on to our customers. When the
product is found at Slumberland,
customers can rest assured we have
already evaluated the value of that
piece in the marketplace. Customers
really do get it ‘factory direct,’ without the middle man or the mark-up.
(7) At Slumberland people can buy
with confidence. We have a ‘Satisfaction Guarantee,’ which means if
someone is not satisfied with their
furniture purchase we will correct
the problem or, within 30 days of
receipt, refund their money. (*Some
restrictions may apply.)”
Other reasons for shopping at
Slumberland that didn’t make
the “top seven” include: • Wide,
open aisles, so you can get from
one part of the store to another
with ease. • You’re treated as a
welcome guest...even offered a
cup of coffee or cold drink...and
the staff is always available to
answer questions. • They carry
many quality U.S.-made products. • And, they offer an “Advantage Club Rewards Program.” Ask for your free Club
card for some great perks!
“Slumberland Internet shopping is now available, too,” shares
Bud. “There are at least five bedroom and five dining room sets on
our website that aren’t available instore...and we’ll be adding more
items throughout the year. When a
product is ordered, it will come
directly to our Topeka store for free
delivery.
“Customer satisfaction is my number one goal. From 7AM to midnight,
anyone can contact me with a question or concern. My personal cell
phone number is listed on the front
door, and our invoice has my email.”
Slumberland Furniture is located at 1800 SW Wanamaker, next to
K-Mart. Call 785-271-7171 for

SAKURA’s, at 29th Street and

“We’ve designed a very unique
Japanese Decor, beginning with our
welcoming reception area. Our two
dining rooms can accommodate
twenty people in one, and 40 in the
other, with seating for 8-to-10 guests
at each grill table.
“We provide delicious food prepared in an entertaining style by our
well-trained chefs. As guests are
seated family-style around the grill
tables, we first serve an appetizing
light soup, then a house salad as the
entertainment begins with the chef
preparing the grill. He then proceeds
by cooking delectable fried rice and
fresh vegetables for each guest...then
artfully cooking the entrees fresh and
to the specifications of each customer’s order. Our menu includes
fresh beef, chicken, seafood and vegetarian dishes.
“SAKURA is located in the space
previously occupied by the Shogun
Restaurant. We have completely renovated and redecorated from top to
bottom. We kept Shogun’s fine chefs,
and they are now more in contact with
the customers. Our cooking style is
different than Kiku’s...mainly in the
sauces and grill temperatures.

Center For Manual Medicine Uses Ultrasound For Guided Injections
Here’s good news for people who
are suffering from muscle and joint
pain...there is no need to suffer any
longer! The Center For Manual
Medicine, at 21st and Fairlawn,
combines the services of Dr. Mark
Penn, a chiropractor, and Dr. Doug
Frye, a medical physician, to create a
one-of-a-kind treatment center.
“We have recently begun implementing ultrasound for diagnostic use
and guided injections,” says Dr. Frye.
“Ultrasound enables us to give an
accurate diagnosis and helps us guide
the injection needle to the correct target area, which provides much better
results for the patient. I believe we are
the only office offering this specific
service in the Topeka area.
“Local injections can be helpful to
treat musculoskeletal conditions
including tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis, capsulitis and fasciitis.”
Cortisone injections are used for:
• Shoulder Tendonitis/Arthritis
• Tennis/Golfer’s Elbow
• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
• DeQuervain’s Tennsynovitis
• Trigger Finger/Arthritis
• Ankle/Foot Tendonitis
• Plantar Fasciitis
“Local injections in the shoulder
can help speed recovery by reducing
pain and inflammation and improving range of motion,” explains
Dr. Frye using ultrasound injection
Dr. Frye. “We also offer Trigger
Point injections, Prolotherapy, as
well as Viscosupplementation Injections for chronic knee arthritis.
“Subacromial cortisone injections,
without the use of ultrasound, have
historically shown a low level of
accuracy (between 29% to 79%).
However, a recent study in the Journal
of Rheumatology showed a 35 point
improvement on a 100 point visual
analog scale with ultrasound guided
injections. In other words, a patient’s
chance for improvement is much
greater with the use of ultrasound.”
“I had a lot of pain in both feet for
years. I tried many different things
with no results. Dr. Frye did a series
of prolotherapy (using ultrasound
injections) and now I have almost no
pain. The results were great!”
J. S. - Topeka
“Many of our patients are experiencing similar results with this new
cutting edge technology,” Says Dr.
Frye. “We invite people to set an
appointment to see if we can assist
them in eliminating pain.
“We specialize in:
• Back and neck pain
• Pre and Post surgical rehabilitation
• Headache
• Hip and leg, ankle and foot pain
• Shoulder and arm pain
• Carpal tunnel syndrome
• Tendonitis/Bursitis
• Work/Auto/Sports injuries
• Chronic Pain/Fybromyalgia”
The clinic also has a fully-staffed
rehabilitation center. Exercise therapy is utilized at each visit to help
patients learn how to keep their
problem from returning
“For several years I had increasing pain in my lower back near the
hip. My GP said my hip was fine. I
had quit exercising and even walking
was quite painful. I went to Dr. Penn
and found it was my SI joint. With
physical therapy and education, I am
virtually pain free and back to working out. As a bonus, the metabolic
program they offer helped me lose 25
pounds and I am off one of my diabetic medications. I feel better than I
have felt in years.”

If Excess Weight Is Making You Feel “Terrible” Call Dr. Tague For Help
The Center for Nutrition (CFN)
was founded by Rick Tague, MD in
1996 to provide proven, medically
based treatment for those who are
overweight. He is one of a very few
physicians in Kansas to be board certified in bariatric medicine—the
medical management of overweight
conditions.
“Through our clinics in Topeka
and Leawood, Kansas, thousands of
overweight patients have now experienced the benefits of our individualized weight control programs,”
says Dr. Tague. “Combined, our
patients have lost well over 100,000
pounds.
“We use modern treatment methods
based on the latest research findings
of bariatric medicine. Our nutritional
treatments are designed to maximize
weight loss, and we provide the individual support each patient needs to
achieve success. The benefits our
patients receive from this approach
are life changing.”
Renee Spillane, an LPN, shares her
personal experience with her individualized Center For Nutrition
weight loss program:
“There’s just one word to describe
how I felt when I weighed 199
pounds...terrible! I’d quit exercising
and had basically just stopped taking
care of myself. I ate out at every
meal, and it seemed like I went from
140 to almost 200 pounds overnight. If I walked up five steps I was
out of breath...and I was tired all the
time. Finally, all I wanted to do was
eat and sleep!
“I had heard about Dr. Tague’s
Before
individualized plans, and made up
my mind to set an appointment with
him. At the end of February, 2007, I
weighed in at 199.5 pounds. I’m 5' 7",
and was wearing a size 19 at the time.
“At first I was skeptical as to
whether the program would work for
me, but I resolved to stay with it. The
first 10 to 15 pound loss really motivated me, and once I got with the
regimen it became easy. As I continued to lose pounds my energy came
back and I began exercising again,
and the weight just started to come
off easily.
“I reached the Center’s goal for me
within five months, but I wanted to
lose more. I reached
my weight of 135
pounds about two
months later. I had
the goal in mind to
be able to wear jeans
and tuck my shirt in.
(I was so tired of
wearing baggy shirts
to cover my weight.)
Now, as a size six, I
can wear anything I
want—comfortably!
“I received wonderful support at the
Center. Everyone
was patient, enAfter
couraging, and very
informative. If I was disappointed
with a week’s weight loss they’d
give me suggestions, boost my
morale, and I’d feel good again. I
received tremendous support at
home, too. Everyone cheered me on.
“This is a lifestyle change, not a diet.
A person needs to be dedicated and
make exercise a habit, like brushing
your teeth. And it is SO worth it!
My cholesterol has dropped tremendously, and I’m full of energy.
Taking all that weight off was like,
WOW! I can even think more clearly! I would truly recommend the
Center For Nutrition to anyone—
my program was very successful.”
“Bariatric physicians understand
that being overweight is more than a
‘cosmetic’ issue,” relates Dr. Tague.
“Being overweight increases the risk
of heart disease, stroke, diabetes,
hypertension, cancer (breast, cervix,
ovary, colon, prostate), arthritis,
depression and many other diseases.
However, through management,
overweight conditions can be controlled before resulting in serious
medical problems. Even a weight
reduction of 10% can significantly
improve an individual’s health.”
Dr. Tague’s newest program has
resulted in an average weight loss of
a remarkable 43 pounds in only 12
weeks.

“Introducing a child to music
at an early age is a gift that will
last through his or her lifetime,”
says Dr. Sylvia Hamilton,
Director of Music & Movement with Miss Sylvia. “It also
enhances their learning abilities...and it’s a happy time for
them. A child’s first musical
experience with their voice and
body is the starting point for all
other musical explorations.”
Linda Helmig Bram, who has
a child enrolled in one of Sylvia’s
classes, writes:
“Sylvia’s music classes have been
a wonderful experience for me and
my child. They are very active and
stimulating. It is a terrific social
experience for children, too. They
take turns using a wide range of
musical instruments (special drums
and other things we wouldn’t get
exposed to otherwise), and sing and
dance together. The kids really love
hearing their own names included in
the songs. Music is a fun way to provide many learning opportunities—
and to get some exercise too!”
Music & Movement classes are
held at Grace Episcopal Cathedral
at 701 SW 8th. Course offerings
include: Family Music for Babies
and for Toddlers; Music of the
Seasons for ages 3 to 5, and Music
Makers At Home in the World for
ages 5 to 8.
“By helping children reach their
full music potential, we help them
grow and come into their own as
well-rounded human beings,”
shares Sylvia.

Image Is Everything—The Eyes Have It!
“First impressions
are lasting impressions,” says Laurie
(Palmer) Guilbault, a
licensed Electrologist
of the Electrolysis
Clinic of Topeka, Inc.
“Surveys reveal that
the eyes are what people remember most
after meeting someone
for the first time.
“For anyone who is
concerned about the
image their bushy or
unruly eyebrows convey—electrolysis is the way to be
rid of that unwanted hair forever.
“Unwanted hair can appear in
embarrassing places for a variety of
reasons. But, whatever the cause, it
can undermine self confidence and
stand in the way of happiness.
Those who use temporary hair removal methods find that within
about a week the hair begins to
grow back...sometimes even darker
and thicker. Electrolysis gets to the
root of the problem—literally!
Electrolysis (the only technique that
permanently removes hair) is performed by inserting a tiny sterilized,
disposable probe into the base of a
hair follicle. The hair is destroyed
by a split-second current of heat.
The sensation that
may be felt is assurance that the destructive activity is taking
place. We adjust the
current setting to release the hair, yet keep
discomfort minimal.
Results are immediate, although heavy
hair growth may require several treatments within a year
for complete removal.
“Electrolysis sessions, which range
from 15 minutes to an hour, can permanently shape eyebrows and eliminate hair on the upper lip, cheeks,
chin, arms and bikini line. For many
people, permanent hair removal can
mean regained self-assurance and
confidence along with many other
psychological benefits. I hear
women say all the time, ‘I wish I
would have done this years ago...I’m
so happy with the results!’ ”

esteem. Call today for a free consultation—785-357-7292. The

Cool Season Lawns (And Weeds)
Are Waking Up
The locally owned and operated
business, Grasslands Lawn Service, puts all of their effort into
keeping Topeka and vicinity lawns
well-groomed and weed-free.
“With the snow and ice finally on
its way out, lawns will be waking up
from winter hibernation,” says
Kevin Negus, Grasslands’ owner.
“It will soon be time to have lawns
mowed for the first time of the season to remove the dead top growth.
“Grasslands is now accepting
mowing clients for the 2008 season. Our services include mowing,
trimming and weed control applications. Clients who sign up for
annual mowing and trimming for
the 2008 season will receive a
spring and fall broadleaf weed control treatment at no additional
charge. These two applications will
greatly reduce the broadleaf weed
structure in the yard, and give a
more pleasing appearance.
“During the spring and fall, mowing is usually performed on a weekly schedule. In the mid-summer
months with its hot, drier weather
grass does not grow as rapidly. In
those months we move into an ‘as
needed’ basis for clients.
“The latest research shows that
removing grass clippings from the
Taraxacum Officinale
(A harbinger of spring!)
lawn reduces the nitrogen efficiency
stored in the grass blades. Grasslands
uses ‘mulching mowers’ that return
the mulched nitrogen-rich grass
back to the lawn.
“We look forward to serving
Topeka and vicinity this upcoming
year. Not only do we have over 30
years of experience in the lawn care
industry, we are licensed with the
Department of Agriculture and fully
insured for our clients’ protection.
Grasslands is also a member of the
Kansas Turfgrass Foundation.”

Topeka Today! Educates Consumers
About Small Topeka Businesses
Small businesses are the backbone
of the Topeka economy, and we feel
we owe it to our community to support them whenever we can. That’s
why the mission of the Topeka
Today! newspaper is to promote
locally-owned businesses in a professional manner, and at a very reasonable price.
Topeka Today! uses direct mail as
its distribution method. Direct mail
is the most effective way to target
mid-to-upper income home owners,
businesses and professional offices.
We use “story-form” advertising as
the most effective way to describe a
product or service.
Story-form advertising:
• Defines your business. Before customers begin to shop, you must educate them about who you are and
what you have to offer. We do this in
the same words you would use when
talking to a customer face-to-face.
The most effective selling occurs oneon-one. We translate that wordage
into your story-form advertising.
• Differentiates your business from
your competitors. A customer may
not be familiar with your business.
(Just because you’ve been in business a long time doesn’t mean that
everyone knows about you.) If you
fail to educate people about your
business and let them know why they
should buy from you, many will go
to the place they’re most familiar
with. In that case, the company that
has acquired the most name recognition (he who spends the most advertising dollars) wins by default. Most
small businesses can’t compete with
large corporate ad budgets.
• Positions your business in the
marketplace. Customers want to
know about specific features or
product quality. They may also want
to know about you and your staff’s
qualifications and the type of service you provide. Remember, the
true value you offer may not be in
just the product or service you offer,
but what your company does to go
‘above and beyond’ the norm in
business.
Topeka Today! can help your business stand out from the competition
by targeting the customers you need
with story-form advertising. Display
ads promote only the product and
price...Topeka Today! adds the why!
We explain why customers should
use your product or service and why
they should buy from you.

In Loving Memory of Robert Johnson
Robert and Susan Johnson
Robert (Bob) Johnson took his final step in his journey of
life on earth Wednesday morning, January 16th, 2008,
after losing a valiant battle with cancer.
Although I have lost my “best friend” I am comforted,
knowing Bob is now in his heavenly Father’s arms, free
from all pain, and enjoying a blessed reunion with his
earlier departed loved ones.
Bob’s and my joint “adventure,” The Gem Store in
Fleming Place, is now closed. I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of our patrons for their support, and to
our many friends and family members for all their generosity of spirit, their love and their prayers during Bob’s
last days.

Understanding Tax Regulations And Tax Penalties Can Save You Money
“Ready or not, the 2007 tax season
is here,” says Robert Holmes, CPA,
PFS, and owner of Holmes &
Associates Chartered. “It’s time for
everyone to gather their 2007 tax
information and begin the tax preparation process. Understanding the
current tax regulations and avoiding
tax penalties can, however, be a
daunting task. Consider the following information as you begin the
2007 tax process:
Charitable Contributions: For a
charitable contribution to be deductible it must be contributed to a qualified organization. Unfortunately,
there are those who pose as charitable entities only to get your money.
Before you make a contribution to an
organization other than your church
or other widely recognized charitable organizations, it’s wise to check
the IRS website. (Keep in mind,
some organizations not listed on the
IRS website may be covered by a
group exemption, meaning they are
subordinate units whose parent organization has received an exemption
letter.) Not only can you verify if the
organization qualifies, you can
check out what the IRS calls its
‘Dirty Dozen.’ This is a list of its top
12 tax scams.
Child Tax Credit: To claim an
exemption for dependents, or
potentially the child tax credit,
you’ll need a tax identification number (usually a Social Security number). If you had a baby near the end
of 2007, the IRS recommends filing
an extension rather than claiming an
exemption without an ID number. In
the absence of an ID number, the
IRS will deny the exemption and/or
tax credit. Don’t forget, a tax credit
reduces tax, whereas a deduction
reduces your taxable income.
Additionally, a penalty could be
assessed when a required ID number
is missing. The penalty of $50 for
each missing number is charged
when a taxpayer doesn’t provide a
required Social Security number on
the tax return.
File your Return on Time: If you
can’t get your return filed by April
15, file Form 4868. This form provides an extension until October 15,
2008. Nevertheless, you’ll need to
estimate your 2007 tax liability and
include payment for the estimated
tax with Form 4868. If the return is
filed after the due date, including
extensions, the IRS can impose a
late-filing penalty of 4.5% per
month (maximum 22.5%) and a late
payment penalty of 0.5% per month
(maximum 25%) of the tax due.
Both penalties are assessed on a
monthly basis until paid.
Underpayment of Estimated
Taxes and Withholding: Taxpayers
are essentially required to pay their
tax liabilities throughout the year,
either through withholding or by
making estimated tax payments. If a
taxpayer owes more than $1,000
when filing his or her return, the
IRS will assess the underpayment
of estimated tax penalty. There are
‘safe harbor’ payments that can protect taxpayers from this penalty.
Dishonored Check: The penalty
for dishonored checks is 2% of the
check amount but not less than $25.
“An understanding of possible
tax penalties can help people avoid
them. Some penalties can be quite
costly and have severe consequences. There are more severe
penalties that we have not mentioned here, which apply to fraudulent actions or claims. If anyone
has questions related to the application of tax penalties and regulations, we urge them to please give
us a call.
“We offer year-round tax planning services and can help individuals make the most of available
tax strategies. This article briefly
mentions only a few tax regulations and common tax penalties
and is not meant to offer specific,
individual advice.”
