The Easter Triduum marks the most significant events of Holy Week. The Easter Triduum is often commonly referred to simply as the Triduum. Catholics believe that Mary is the ever-virgin Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven and Earth. But she also was a human being--a woman who made a journey of faith through various trials and uncertainties and endured her share of suffering. Even with her unique graces and vocation, Mary remains a woman we can relate to and from whom we have much to learn. If you want to learn about Mary this study, which is based on Dr. Edward Siri’s 2013 book, Walking with Mary, is the place to begin. The Monday evening sessions begin April 4 and the Tuesday morning sessions begin April 5. The contents of the 8 lessons are as follows: Introduction The Annunciation The Visitation The Nativity The Presentation and The Finding in the Temple The Wedding at Cana Mary at the Cross Mary Crowned with Glory Each video lesson is approximately 30 minutes long and most are filmed on site. The high quality, up-close access videos of the Holy Land will take your breath away and the course content will renew your spirit and affection for our Holy Mother. Total meeting time each week is about two hours. A Study Binder is included in in the $28.00 fee. Payment can be made at the first session but to reserve your spot please confirm with Barb Voss by email at [email protected] by March 28th. The OLW Adult Enrichment committee hopes you will join us on this journey. BLESSING OF NEW LIFE The weekend of April 2 & 3, after each weekend Mass, a blessing will be given for all expectant parents and their unborn children. All parents, families, and friends who are anticipating the birth of a child, whether here or elsewhere, are welcome to come to the front of the church after Mass for the blessing. Please invite anyone you know who would like to participate in this celebration of and prayer for new life! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOLY THURSDAY MASS If you would like to have your foot washed at the 7:30 pm Mass on Holy Thursday, please contact Mandy Dillon in the parish office at 847-253-5353 or [email protected]. After the homily that evening, twelve people will be seated in front of the altar to have their feet washed. In this action we remember how Christ washed the feet of the twelve apostles at the Last Supper. Among many other things, it is a reminder of our call to serve one another. PRAY FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEAD We extend the mercy of God to our brothers and sisters, living and deceased, when we intercede for them and place them in God’s hands. In these prayers, we are connected with our brothers and sisters and with the merciful Lord himself. I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him. OUR LADY OF THE WAYSIDE CAREGIVING IN AMERICA Caregiving is a major issue. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 21 percent of households have a member who needs caregiving. The reasons a person may need care vary: Many are elderly, disabled or ill and need assistance with day-to-day living tasks. They may also need help managing medical conditions. Contrary to what many people think, most people who provide such care are not paid professionals. They are instead unpaid caregivers, often family members or neighbors, and there are 65.7 million of them in the U.S., according to a report by The National Alliance for Caregiving and the AARP. The impact of the work done by caregivers is enormous. Analysts note that the economic value of their labor is over $450 billion dollars per year, though it is impossible to put a price tag on the social and personal value of their work. Many care receivers are able to maintain their independence and remain part of their communities because of caregiving. In recent years, more attention has been paid to the work of caregiving and its effect on caregivers. While many family members experience deep fulfillment in helping to care for their loved ones, caregiving has its own risks: • Caregivers often experience stress as they try to balance their own needs with the needs of those they care for. • Some caregivers report that their health has declined as a result of caregiving. They feel that their own health issues negatively impact their ability to provide care. • The financial cost of caregiving can be serious. Many caregivers report spending thousands of dollars each year in support of their caregiving work. In addition, some caregivers find it necessary to quit their jobs or cut their hours so that they can be present for the family member who they care for. Caregiving is important work, one worthy of support from family, friends, neighbors and faith communities. Dear God, we thank you for your loving care and the opportunity to care for each other. Help us to remember and care for the caregivers in our midst. Amen. CARING FOR THE CAREGIVER Within Faith Communities Almost 30 percent of adults in the United States are caregivers. This means that your congregation likely has several caretakers in its membership. While faith communities are often very concerned with providing care to the ill, elderly and disabled, family caregivers can be overlooked. The work of a caregiver can be overwhelming, and some givers of care can be reluctant to ask for help and support. When a caregiver becomes overwhelmed and does not get help, his or her life is negatively impacted, and he or she may not be able to continue to provide good care to the care receiver. Because caregiving typically takes place in homes, caregivers and the challenges they face can be invisible to others. Sometimes congregations aren’t aware of a caregiver’s situation until it becomes incredibly difficult and much harder to address. Awareness of caregivers within your faith community is an important part of providing quality care to all members. Congregations can do a lot to support caregivers. Here are some ideas: • Identify caregivers. Clergy and laypeople who provide care to the disabled, shut-ins or the elderly should find out who is providing care. The caregiver may also be in need of pastoral care and support. • Provide practical assistance. Members of the congregation can volunteer to provide practical assistance, such as help with chores. When appropriate, community members may be able to provide respite care. • Acknowledge the work of caregivers in worship services and community prayers. • Provide direction to caregivers who are in need of professional help. Direction may include directing them to casework services, counseling or other resources. • Reach out to caregivers. They may feel isolated from their peers. Plan time to spend together over coffee or a meal. In a recent study by AARP, 51% of caregivers indicated that they pray as a way of coping with caregiving stress. When appropriate, offer to pray with caregivers. • Help the caregiver find out if they qualify for financial assistance programs. Easter Vigil Celebration in Gathering Place 14 SACRED LITURGY Our Lady of the Wayside Monday, March 21, 2016 - Sunday, March 27, 2016 Sunday, March 27, 2016 Easter Sunday No meeting or events CYCLES OF FAITH Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion "Pilate addressed them a third time, 'What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime.'" The Palm Sunday Gospel readings present a sad picture of grown-ups who succumb to peer pressure. Three times, Pilate proclaimed that Jesus was not guilty. But yet, he gave in to the mounting pressure from the crowd, whose "voices prevailed...and he handed Jesus over to them." Also, during the opening Gospel at the procession of palms, we see the adoring crowds hailing Jesus as "the king who comes in the name of the Lord," but only too soon the chorus changes as the voice of the crowd cries out, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" What happened to Jesus' loyal supporters? How did the mob mentality overtake them all? Then too, we have Peter, who in comfortable company with Jesus and his friends promised eternal faithfulness. But when others began asking uncomfortable questions, he caved: "Woman, I do not know him." These three scenarios give us a chance to reflect on our own faithfulness as we journey into Holy Week. Like Pilate, do we know the truth but abandon it when it becomes unpopular? Public opinion these days declares much Church teaching to have fallen out of favor--will we renege like Pilate or stand fast to the faith? The fickle crowds demonstrate another kind of weakness, where instead of thinking for themselves, people just followed those around them. Are we guilty of this kind of passive intellectual laziness? How about Peter's problem: do we change our story based on current company, or do we live as consistent Christian witnesses in the world? This week, may we have the courage to accompany Jesus all the way to the cross, no matter what anyone else may do.
