Jesus Christ is ‘Risen’ today
The church proclaims from its doors and its pulpits, from the hearts of
Christians everywhere, united in Christ, the joy that the horrors we remember
of Holy Week are over, the flogging and the crucifixion. The emptiness of
Easter Saturday has finished, and we are now in that period of celebration for
‘Jesus Christ is Risen today’. But what does Easter really mean to the world
around us?
Well it’s a holiday and the word holiday comes from Holy day, and for some
that has good sides and bad. For some there are the kids, off school needing
both entertainment and caring for, when most parents have to fit work in also.
There are the Easter eggs, a time to over indulge on a particular type of
chocolate and packaging. Are you a person who pigs them straight away or do
you pick for months?
There is the garden, the nights are getting lighter, the soil warmer, the grass
starts to grow. For some a great joy, for others the onset of another task, more
work.
Three examples of how some people see Easter and I am sure there are many
more. Easter should be about a new beginning, it should be about a life given
for you, about a fresh start, for in Christ dying we have forgiveness of our sin,
in his resurrection we have new life. Full life in all its glory
I pray that this Easter you will receive refreshment in mind body and spirit.
Your brother in Christ,
Simon

John Daniels All Saints Church has lost
a long time member with John’s passing.
He was an active member of the current
Parochial Church Council and, with
Janeen his wife, read the lessons on the
fourth Sunday of each month.
Over many years he gave generously
of his practical expertise to the church
and its environs and his final creations,
the two beautifully crafted notice boards
which stand at the bottom of the church
drive, will serve as a fitting memorial.

Llangarron Short Mat
Bowls Club recently held
the final of its Club Pairs
Competition. Andy Biggs
and Hilary Carpenter
met Megan Powell and Elaine Joseph,
with both pairs having reached the final
after being unbeaten in the earlier group
matches. In a hard fought match Andy
and Hilary started strongly setting a
commanding lead before Megan and
Elaine produced a late run of winning
ends, however it was not quite enough
and Andy and Hilary ran out deserved
winners. HSMBA Chairman Jamie Harris
was on hand to congratulate the players
and praise the level of play. After an up
and down season in the Winter League
the club is now looking forward to playing
in a range of local tournaments before the
start of the Summer League.

Llangarron Walking Group Is anyone
interested in joining a walking group in
Llangarron? We could run it along similar
lines to the Llangrove group where the
walkers themselves decide where they are
going to walk.
We could walk, say, for one morning a
week or a fortnight, meeting at the church
car park and do local walks from there, or
we could take a short drive to somewhere
in the Wye Valley or Forest of Dean, or a
mixture of both. Driving somewhere would
probably involve a car-share and may
need to be arranged in advance, perhaps
on the previous walk. We could decide
where we go on an ad hoc
basis or take it in turns. I
envisage we may typically
walk for maybe 1½ or 2
hours for between 3-5 miles
but there’s no reason why
we couldn’t include longer
walks if the participants
wanted. No-one would be
expected to walk every
week but if the day and time
were fixed and there is a
sufficient number, we should
be able to keep the group
going. Once established we
may attract more walkers on
an occasional basis.
8
I am not proposing to be the walks leader
but I am willing to act as a co-ordinator
to get the group off the ground. If you
are interested, please contact me, Anthea
Keller Smyth, on grandanpriory@waitrose.

WOMEN’S GUILD
Women’s Guild We were so pleased when
Chair Margaret Morris welcomed our
speaker, Guild member Marguerite Gordon,
who spoke of her childhood in Woodford
Green, living opposite an illustrious artist,
who specialised in painting birds of prey –
his meticulous picture of the White-tailed
Sea Eagle sold for £4,000. David ReidHenry kept as a pet a Crowned Eagle,
which he even took on the train, long
before Health & Safety Rules applied, and
had other birds of prey in his garden, so
his children came to play in Marguerite’s
garden where it was safer. He travelled all
over the world, sometimes with his father
and brother, who were also artists, and he
illustrated many books with his paintings.
This included visiting many of the world’s
museums to illustrate a book on Extinct
and Vanishing Birds of the World. He
also designed stamps for Mauritius and
Botswana. He emigrated to Zimbabwe,
where he remarried, and died in 1977 at the
age of 58. After this fascinating talk, the
evening ended with delicious refreshments
baked and supplied by Margaret Morris.
There will be time to explore Salisbury
city centre. Contact Sue Morris 01600

MEMORIAL HALL (HR2 0EL)
To celebrate the opening of the New Lounge Extension by
Rear Admiral Philip Lawrence Wilcocks, CB DSC DL
and the Diamond Jubilee of the Hall Opening
We are showing -
THE FIRST WORLD WAR
on FILM
a collection of film from the Huntley Archives,
presented by Amanda Huntley.
It has been one hundred years
since the outbreak of World War
One: this war seems to have
scarred us. Perhaps because it
was the war of firsts: the first tank,
the first war fought in the air and
the first war fought by civilians in
uniform, killed on a scale we could
not imagine.
This evening of rare archive film,
not just the ’wallpaper’ seen so
often on television will examine
the war from the films that have
survived. Film itself was a new
invention and the pictures we
have are sometimes shaky and
faded but capture something of
the madness of trench life and film
used as propaganda.
We will examine some of those
war stories: all from a filmic point
of view, including a fragment
showing the Herefordshire
Regiment itself in 1914.
Doors open at 7pm. The official opening of the Lounge Extension will
be at 7.30pm with the film starting at 8pm

team helps young people develop humanitarian
values and gain vital life skills.

We’ve MOVED!

As of March 2015, phase one
of the St Michael’s Hospice

completed, and we couldn’t
be more delighted with the
progress thus far.
team from the West
Midlands, who worked
tirelessly on the day and saved us further
expense. Local businesses such as GB
Liners were also incredibly important in
helping us keep the move on schedule.”
Although there is a great deal of
rehabilitation to be done in the original
building, the Hospice’s medical and
administrative teams have successfully
moved into our beautifully designed
offices and spaces within the Inpatient
Unit.
Ruth continued, “This is of course only
the first phase: we still have a great deal
of renovation work scheduled for the
first set of buildings we’ve now vacated,
so we can offer support to even more
families through better Day Hospice
facilities.”
Ruth Denison, Head of Fundraising, said,
“It was a real team effort; all the Hospice
departments pulled together to ensure
that everything ran smoothly and to
plan. We couldn’t have done it without
the help of the NatWest private banking
And none of this would have been
possible without the generous support of

From the Bishop of Hereford
The evidence for the resurrection
of Jesus is compelling – the empty
tomb, the appearance of Jesus
to his disciples and others, the
transformation against all the odds
of the bewildered, downcast and
utterly defeated group of disciples to
those who were to go out and share
Christian good news across the world.
But however compelling it might be,
the evidence for the resurrection of
Jesus can itself lead to a “so what?”,
“whatever” kind of reaction.
On the first Easter Day, the turning
point of understanding came for
Mary Magdalene when Jesus called
her by name. She thought he was
the gardener. “Mary,” said Jesus, and
then came the moment of recognition.
Easter is about life, new life, about
Jesus risen from the dead, giving
us hope when things feel hopeless,
courage when we want to run away,
strength to be open and vulnerable,
confidence in the face of death.
When things are at their worst, God
acts. When things are dark, when
human possibilities are exhausted.
God acts; new life dawns. That was
Mary’s experience; that can be ours
too.
The school inspector was looking at
children’s work in the classroom.
At the back of one little girl’s book,
he found a small masterpiece.
“What a wonderful poem,” he said.
“They’re my spelling corrections,”
replied the girl.
Spelling corrections or not, they spelt
out words for Easter.
They read:
Yesterday, yesterday, yesterday
Sorrow, sorrow, sorrow
Today, today, today
Hope, hope, hope
Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow
Love, love, love
Yes, Christ is risen.
A very happy Easter.
